Volvo VIN Decoder: Decode Any Volvo VIN, From YV1 to Plant Code

Decode a Volvo VIN character by character: YV1, YV4 and YV2 prefixes, model year, plant codes, and why build sheets need more than a decoder.

Search for a Volvo VIN decoder and you'll find tools that promise "full options and packages." Most of them can't deliver that, and Volvo owners hit the same wall every time they try to rebuild a car's original equipment list from a VIN alone. This guide shows what a Volvo VIN does tell you, what we got when we ran real Volvo VIN patterns through NHTSA's decoder, and where the build sheet really comes from.

Comparison of what a VIN decoder returns versus what a full build sheet lists for a Volvo

What's actually inside a Volvo VIN?

A Volvo VIN has 17 characters in three blocks: a manufacturer code (1–3), a vehicle description (4–9, with a check digit at 9) and an identifier section (10–17) that holds the model year, plant and serial number. It describes how the car was built, not what happened to it afterward.

Three blocks, one car

The first block names the maker, the second describes the model, body and engine, and the third makes the VIN unique. That layout is the same for every brand sold in the US, which is why our general guide to decoding a VIN works for Volvo too.

Why the same letters mean different things on different Volvos

Characters 4–8 are manufacturer-defined. A letter in position 5 on a 2019 XC60 doesn't have to mean what it means on a 2012 S60. Only a decoder loaded with Volvo's registered patterns can read them correctly.

What do YV1, YV4, YV2 and LVY mean at the start of a Volvo VIN?

They're World Manufacturer Identifiers. On NHTSA's vPIC database, YV1 is a Volvo passenger car, YV4 is a Volvo multipurpose passenger vehicle (an SUV or crossover), and LVY is a passenger car from Daqing Volvo Car Manufacturing in China. YV2 is listed under Volvo Car Corporation as an incomplete vehicle.

YV1: sedans, wagons and the like

A YV1 start points to a Volvo passenger car. In our tests below, the S90 pattern began with YV1.

YV4: SUVs and crossovers

A YV4 start points to a Volvo MPV. Our XC60 pattern began with YV4.

YV2: be careful with what other sites tell you

Several guides say YV2 means "Volvo trucks." vPIC lists YV2 under Volvo Car Corporation as an incomplete vehicle, which isn't the same thing. We haven't tested heavy-truck VINs, so if you're decoding a Volvo semi, treat any passenger-car decoder's answer with suspicion.

LVY: the Chinese-built prefix

An "L" in position 1 is the country code for China. In vPIC, LVY maps to Daqing Volvo Car Manufacturing. This is the prefix to expect when a listing says a Volvo was built outside Sweden.

Where do you find the VIN on a Volvo?

Look through the lower driver's-side corner of the windshield and on the driver's door pillar label. Newer models also show it digitally, and it's printed on the registration, title and service booklet.

On the car

Windshield first, door pillar second. They should match exactly.

In the car's screen or app

On many recent Volvos the VIN appears in the center display's settings or in the owner's app. The menu names change between models and software versions, and we haven't tested every one, so check the owner's manual for yours.

On paper

Compare the title and registration against the car. A mismatch is a problem to solve before money changes hands.

How do you read each character of a Volvo VIN?

Read it left to right: 1–3 maker, 4–8 description, 9 check digit, 10 model year, 11 plant, 12–17 serial.

Characters 4–8: the Volvo-specific part

This is where model and engine live. In our XC60 test, vPIC decoded it as a 2019 XC60 Momentum with a 2.0L four-cylinder, engine code B4204TS, all-wheel drive.

Character 9: the check digit

A mathematical check on the other 16 characters. It catches typos and altered VINs. I, O and Q are never used anywhere in a VIN.

Character 10: the model year

K is 2019, L is 2020, M is 2021, N is 2022, P is 2023, R is 2024, S is 2025 and T is 2026. The cycle repeats every 30 years, so a "K" could also be 1989.

Character 11: the assembly plant

In both of our Volvo tests, position 11 was "1". vPIC returned Sweden as the country but left the plant city blank. So we can confirm Sweden for these patterns, and we won't guess at a factory name that the data didn't give us.

What did we find decoding real Volvo VINs on NHTSA?

We decoded two Volvo VIN patterns on NHTSA's vPIC decoder on October 24, 2026, using the first 8 characters, the year and plant characters, and a wildcard for the check digit and serial. NHTSA returned "incomplete VIN" (error 6) for both, as expected for a partial pattern, and still decoded the fields below.

What it shows about free decoders

Comparison of what a VIN decoder returns versus what a full build sheet lists for a Volvo

Everything vPIC returned was a factory-level fact: model, year, engine, drive. None of it was a package list, a color or an option code. That's the key to the next question.

Can a VIN give you a Volvo build sheet?

Not from a free decoder. A decoder reads the VIN's registered patterns, which cover model, engine and body. A build sheet is the list of factory options and packages installed on that exact car, and that data sits in the manufacturer's own records.

A Volvo retailer or the owner's account with the manufacturer can often pull the original equipment list. We haven't tested those routes, so ask the seller or a retailer directly instead of relying on our word that they'll work for your model year.

The window sticker, if it survives, lists the options. Our guide to the window sticker by VIN covers that, and the colour code from the VIN article covers paint.

How is a Volvo VIN decode different from a Volvo VIN check?

A decode reads the factory description. A Volvo VIN check shows what's happened to the car since: title brands, recorded accidents, odometer readings and open recalls. A decode tells you the car was built as an XC60. A check tells you whether you should buy this one.
