Ford VIN Decoder: What Your Ford's VIN Tells You, Position by Position

Ford VIN decoder guide tested on NHTSA data: read the model, engine, year and plant, then see where the build sheet, paint code and recalls come from.

The ad says "2022 F-150 SuperCrew, 5.0 V8, 4x4." You can check all of that before you drive out to see the truck. A Ford VIN decoder turns the 17 characters into the model, cab, engine, model year and plant.

For this guide we ran Ford VINs through NHTSA's free decoder and compared the results with Ford's own VIN guide. Here's what each position means, and what no VIN can tell you.

TL;DR: Most US-built Fords start with 1FA (cars), 1FT (trucks) or 1FM (SUVs and other multipurpose vehicles). Positions 5–7 are the model and body, the 8th is the engine, the 10th the model year and the 11th the plant. Paint, most options, the axle ratio and accident history aren't in the VIN.

Ford VIN plant codes in position 11, from Ford's 2022 VIN guide, each confirmed with an NHTSA vPIC decode: Dearborn, Kansas City, Kentucky Truck, Wayne, Chicago, Flat Rock, Louisville, Oakville, Hermosillo and Cuautitlan

How do you decode a Ford VIN number?

Read the 17 characters in groups: 1–3 maker, 4 restraints or weight class, 5–7 model and body, 8 engine, 9 check digit, 10 year, 11 plant, 12–17 serial. NHTSA's free vPIC decoder reads them for you and confirms the check digit.

Where is the VIN on a Ford?

Ford lists the driver's side door jamb and the lower driver's side corner of the windshield. It's also in the Ford app, your Ford account and the SYNC screen (Ford support).

Check that the VIN on the vehicle matches the title. If it doesn't, stop until someone explains why.

What does a Ford VIN look like?

Here's a VIN in the format Ford uses: 1FTFW1E55NFA12345. We picked the serial at the end arbitrarily, so the same 17 characters may belong to a real truck.

On October 4, 2026 we ran it through NHTSA vPIC. It came back as a 2022 F-150 SuperCrew pickup with four-wheel drive and a 5.0L V8, built in Dearborn, Michigan. NHTSA's note read "VIN decoded clean. Check Digit (9th position) is correct".

It also cautioned that the decoded model year may be incorrect, a note it added to each pickup we tested.

The position labels in this guide come from Ford's 2022 VIN guide. Ford notes that the data is preliminary and prepared for its dealers, so confirm it with a decode.

What do the first 3 characters mean?

The first three characters are the World Manufacturer Identifier. Federal rules say this section must "uniquely identify the manufacturer and type of the motor vehicle" (49 CFR 565.15).

Ford's VIN guide lists 1FA for US-built passenger cars, 1FT for trucks and 1FM for multipurpose passenger vehicles. It lists 1FD for incomplete vehicles.

In our tests, Mexican-built Fords started with 3FA, 3FT and 3FM. A Canadian-built Edge started with 2FM. NHTSA's list of Ford codes shows 53 identifiers under Ford Motor Company.

What do positions 4 to 7 tell you?

Position 4 covers safety equipment and, on trucks, the weight class. Ford's guide labels it "Restraint System Type" on passenger cars. For trucks, federal rules require the VIN to identify the brake system and gross vehicle weight rating (49 CFR 565.15).

On our F-150, NHTSA returned hydraulic brakes and a 7,001–8,000 lb weight class. On the F-250 it returned 9,001–10,000 lb.

Positions 5–7 are the model line, series and body. Ford's guide lists W1E as an F-150 SuperCrew 4x4 and W1C as a SuperCrew 4x2. X1 marks a SuperCab and F1 a Regular Cab.

We checked it. A W1C pattern came back from NHTSA as a SuperCrew 4x2.

What does the 8th digit mean?

The 8th character is the engine. Ford's guide says it covers displacement, cylinders, fuel type and horsepower.

We changed only that character on our 2022 F-150 pattern. NHTSA returned a 5.0L V8 for 5, a 3.5L turbo V6 for 8, a 2.7L V6 for P and a 3.5L V6 hybrid for D.

The same engine size can use a different code on another model. NHTSA returned a 5.0L V8 for the 5 on the F-150 and for the F on the 2022 Mustang GT. Ford's guide keeps separate engine tables for passenger cars and light trucks. That's why a Ford VIN decoder needs the whole VIN, not one character.

How do I find the model year?

Read the 10th character. Federal rules set the codes (49 CFR 565.15). Recent ones are L = 2020, M = 2021, N = 2022 and P = 2023. Then come R = 2024, S = 2025, T = 2026 and V = 2027.

Ford's guide shows the older ones too. The digits 4 to 9 stand for 2004 to 2009, and A starts again at 2010. The codes repeat, so the same guide lists 4 again for 2034.

Which plant built my Ford?

The 11th character is the assembly plant. Ford's 2022 guide lists F for Dearborn, K for Kansas City and E for Kentucky Truck in Louisville. L is Michigan Assembly, G is Chicago and 5 is Flat Rock.

U is Louisville Assembly, a second plant in that city. B is Oakville in Canada, and R and M are Hermosillo and Cuautitlan in Mexico.

Every one of those ten codes matched when we decoded a VIN with it. W is Rouge Electric in Dearborn, where our electric F-150 pattern decoded.

The last six characters are the serial. Ford's guide says passenger cars get a six-digit numeric sequence, while trucks and MPVs get an alphanumeric one.

What does a free Ford VIN decoder show, and what does it miss?

A free Ford VIN decoder shows the model, body or cab, drive type, engine, model year and plant. It misses the paint, most options, the axle ratio and everything that happened after the factory.

We tested eight Ford VINs in NHTSA vPIC on October 4, 2026. The serial numbers were arbitrary, so the table shows only the first 11 characters.

All eight decoded clean with a correct check digit.

Can a Ford VIN show the trim level?

Sometimes. NHTSA returned ST for the Explorer, GT Coupe for the Mustang and Premium for the Mach-E.

For the F-150 it returned only the cab style, SuperCrew. For the Bronco it listed four possible trims: Base, Big Bend, Black Diamond and Outer Banks. For the Maverick and the F-250, the trim field was empty.

So a free decode alone won't confirm an XLT or Lariat badge on an F-150.

Is Ford VIN decoding free?

Yes. NHTSA's decoder is free, and NHTSA says the information "is reported by the manufacturer" (NHTSA vPIC). Title, accident and odometer history aren't part of a decode. Those come from a vehicle history report.

Does Ford offer a VIN lookup tool?

Yes. Ford's help page points owners to its fleet website, Ford Pro, where you select a year to get a VIN guide (Ford support).

The same site has a VIN lookup. Ford describes it as showing "the specs, features, and build history of your fleet vehicles" (Ford Pro). We didn't test that lookup for this guide.

How do I find a Ford build sheet, paint code or window sticker?

None of them is inside the VIN. Ford points owners to a build sheet for the factory options and to the door jamb label for the paint code.

Ford build sheet by VIN

Ford says build sheets, also called Marti Reports, "provide the complete factory options list and door data plate info". They cover the engine size, transmission, paint codes, production date and axle ratio (Ford support).

Ford names Marti Auto Works as the licensee to its production database. That page says the reports cover US and Canadian vehicles from 1967 to 2021. Another Ford page gives 1967 to 2017. Ford's pages say you purchase the report, and it arrives as a PDF by email.

Paint code, axle code and build date

Look at the label on the driver's door jamb. Ford lists what's printed there, including "EXT PNT: Exterior paint code," "AXLE: Axle code" and the date of manufacture (Ford support).

None of our eight decodes returned a paint code, an axle ratio or a build month.

Window sticker and towing capacity

Ford says replacement window stickers may be purchased from the Ford Show Parts website. One Ford page says that covers 2008 and newer model years (Ford support). Two other Ford pages say 2007.

Our window sticker by VIN guide covers the free and paid routes. None of our decodes returned a tow rating either. Our towing capacity by VIN guide shows where to find it.

How do you decode an old Ford VIN (before 1981)?

A 17-character decoder won't read it, because older Ford VINs are shorter. Ford says most older VINs are 11 digits long, and it offers a VIN Decode Letter for 1946 to 1966 models.

NHTSA's decoder has an error message for it: "Invalid Year Submitted – Pre-1981 Year Decode Attempt" (NHTSA vPIC). Today, federal rules say each VIN "shall consist of seventeen (17) characters" (49 CFR 565.13).

Ford's own wording: "Most older VINs will be 11 digits long; some could be 10 digits (e.g., Thunderbird) and some Canadian VINs could be 13 to 15 digits" (Ford support).

How to request a Ford VIN Decode Letter

Call Ford's Customer Relationship Center at 1-800-392-3673 or use its live chat. Have the VIN and the door tag codes ready. Ford offers the letter for 1946 to 1966 model years.

For 1967 and newer classics, the same Ford page points to a build sheet instead.

Where is the VIN on a classic Ford?

Ford says the location on 1967 and older vehicles varies by model. It lists the driver's side door jamb, the glove compartment, the right-hand dash panel and the top left side of the frame.

How do I check Ford recalls by VIN?

Enter the VIN on Ford's recall page, which searches recalls initiated since January 1, 2004. NHTSA's recall lookup takes the same 17 characters and shows unrepaired safety recalls for that exact vehicle.

Our free recall check uses official NHTSA recall data and explains each recall in plain English.

What a Ford recall check won't show

NHTSA says its lookup won't show a recall that has already been repaired. It also won't show safety recalls more than 15 years old, unless the manufacturer offers more coverage. It can also miss some recently announced recalls where not all VINs have been identified yet.

Are Ford recall repairs free?

Ford says yes: "parts and service for a vehicle recall repair are free through your local Ford Dealer" (Ford recalls). Federal law says the manufacturer "shall remedy the defect or noncompliance without charge" (49 U.S.C. 30120).

That law drops the free-remedy requirement if the vehicle was first bought more than 15 calendar years before the notice. Ford's page says its safety, compliance and emissions recalls don't expire. An open recall is a fair point to raise before you pay.

What our Ford data shows

Our Ford F-150 reliability data counts 11,311 NHTSA owner complaints across model years 2017 to 2026. The most reported area is the power train. Model year 2021 drew the most complaints.

What can't a Ford VIN decoder tell you before you buy?

It can't tell you about a salvage or flood title, a past accident, an odometer rollback or a theft record. A Ford VIN decoder confirms what left the plant, and a vehicle history report covers what happened after.

Match the VIN in three places

Check that the VIN is the same on the windshield, the door jamb and the title. Then check that the model, cab, engine and plant fit the ad.

Fords that crossed state lines

If the vehicle has been titled in more than one state, check the records from each one. Buying in Texas or Florida? Start with that state's records, then look further back.

Run the full check before you pay

The full report on our Ford VIN check page covers title, accident and odometer records for the exact vehicle.

The VIN tells you what your Ford was on the day it was built. It can't tell you what happened since. Start with a free check on VINspectorAI for the decoded specs and open recalls, no account needed. The full report covers the history.
