Toyota VIN Decoder: Japan, USA or Canada? What Every Digit Means

Decode a Toyota VIN digit by digit: see if it was built in Japan, the US, Canada or Mexico, plus the engine, model year and plant, all tested on NHTSA vPIC.

Two 2019 Corollas can look the same on a lot and still be very different cars: one a sedan built in Ontario, the other a hatchback built in Aichi, Japan. A Toyota VIN decoder tells you which one you're looking at, and on October 13, 2026 we ran 16 Toyota VINs through the official NHTSA vPIC decoder to write down exactly what comes back.

TL;DR: The first character of a Toyota VIN is the country where it was assembled: J is Japan, 4 and 5 are the USA, 2 is Canada and 3 is Mexico. Unlike some brands, Toyota doesn't pack the engine into one digit, so read characters 4 to 8 together. The VIN doesn't contain your options or paint code, though Toyota's own lookup can return them.

Every VIN in the tables below uses a made-up serial number (the last six characters) with a valid check digit, so none of them belongs to a real car. You can paste any of them into vPIC and get the same answers.

How do you decode a Toyota VIN?

Read the VIN in four blocks: characters 1 to 3 say who built it, 4 to 8 describe the vehicle, 9 is a check digit, and 10 to 17 hold the model year, plant and serial number. That layout comes from the federal rule on VIN content requirements, so it applies to every modern Toyota.

Where is the VIN on a Toyota?

Look through the windshield at the driver's side of the dashboard, near the base of the glass. Federal rules require the VIN to be readable through the vehicle glazing, and Toyota's VIN lookup page lists the same dash plate plus a label on the driver-side door jamb, your registration card and your insurance card. The number on your paperwork should match the car exactly.

What does a Toyota VIN look like?

The check digit is a math test on the other 16 characters, so a VIN with one typo usually fails it. Our guide to how to decode a VIN number walks through the calculation.

Why is my Toyota VIN only 13 digits?

Federal rules say each VIN consists of seventeen characters, so a shorter number can mean a much older vehicle, a car sold new outside the US, or a character dropped when someone copied it. We haven't tested any short numbers, so don't run one through the tables in this guide; use a guide written for that exact car and year.

Was my Toyota built in Japan, the US, Canada or Mexico?

Read the first character. In our tests J returned Japan, 4 and 5 returned the USA, 2 returned Canada and 3 returned Mexico, and the full three-character prefix named the exact Toyota company that built the car.

What do J, 4T, 5T, 2T and 3T mean?

Here is what each prefix decoded to. Note that the same model name appears under more than one prefix, which is why you read all three characters.

Where was my Toyota built, exactly?

Use the 11th character, but only together with the first three. The same character can point to different places under different prefixes: the character 3 returned Toyota City, Aichi on the Corolla hatchback and Aichi with no city on the Prius.

Does it matter if a Toyota was built in Japan?

For the VIN, it only matters as a cross-check. The decode should match the listing: our 4Runner test decoded to Tahara, Japan, so an ad calling a Japan-built 4Runner whose VIN decodes to a Kentucky plant deserves questions. We can't tell you from a VIN whether one plant's cars are better than another's.

What if the maker and the plant disagree?

Treat it as a red flag and re-read the VIN. In one test we paired a Baja California maker prefix (3TM) with the plant character X, and vPIC still returned San Antonio, Texas for the plant, because it decodes each part on its own. A decoder won't always warn you when two parts don't belong together, so compare the maker line and the plant line yourself.

What do digits 4 to 8 tell you about the model and engine?

Characters 4 to 8 describe the car's model line, body and drivetrain, but on a Toyota there's no single "engine digit" you can read on its own. Three Camry VINs in our tests had the same 4th, 6th, 7th and 8th characters and differed only in the 5th, and that one character changed the trim, and on the hybrid the engine code too.

Can a decoder show the transmission?

Sometimes. vPIC returned Automatic on the Camry, RAV4, Highlander and 4Runner and CVT on the Prius, but the field was blank on the Tundra, Tacoma and Corolla sedan. A blank means NHTSA has no data for it, not that the car lacks one.

What does a decoder error look like?

Our first Prius test used a plant character that doesn't exist for that maker. vPIC returned error codes 4 and 14, suggested the corrected VIN JTDKARFU7K!123456, and left the plant blank. When you see a "!" in the suggested VIN, that position is the one to re-check against the car.

How do you read the model year and check digit?

The 10th character is the model year, and the 9th is the check digit. For 2018 and later the 10th runs J (2018), K (2019), L (2020), M (2021), N (2022), P (2023), R (2024), S (2025), T (2026) and V (2027), per the same federal table.

Why did vPIC say the model year may be wrong?

On our Tundra and Tacoma tests, vPIC returned 2019 but added the note "The Model Year decoded for this VIN may be incorrect." That message is vPIC asking you to confirm the year, so read the 10th character yourself and check it against the listing and the title.

Which letters can't be in a VIN?

I, O and Q. The federal rule limits VINs to digits plus a set of capital letters that omits I, O and Q. If a listing shows one of them, someone mistyped it.

Can a Toyota VIN give you the paint code, options or build sheet?

Not directly: the 17 characters name the model line, engine and plant, but not your color or options. Toyota can look them up for you, though, and its VIN lookup page says a VIN will return the year built, color, technical specifications and optional equipment installed.

Toyota's own lookup

The page lists four result sections: Basic Vehicle Information, Additional Vehicle Information, Port or Factory Installed Equipment and Standard Installation Equipment. It doesn't say which model years it covers, so try your VIN and don't assume an older car will return anything.

Window sticker and paint code

If the lookup comes up empty, our guide to getting a window sticker by VIN lists Toyota's VIN lookup among the manufacturer portals and notes that coverage varies by brand and model year. For paint, our color-code guide says Toyota's code sits on a driver's-side door-jamb label marked "C/TR" and is three characters long, such as 1F7. We haven't checked either against a Toyota ourselves.

What should you check beyond a Toyota VIN decoder before you buy?

A decoder tells you what the car was on the day it was built. It can't tell you what happened since: a title brand, an odometer rollback, an accident or an unrepaired recall.

Check recalls on the VIN

NHTSA's recall lookup lets you enter a VIN and see unrepaired recalls, which is worth doing before any deposit.

See the full history

For the model-by-model picture, our Toyota reliability data pulls together NHTSA complaints and recalls for the models we track, and the Tacoma reliability page covers the truck on its own. Then run the specific car through our Toyota VIN check to see its own title, odometer and accident records. If the car you're weighing is Toyota's luxury sibling, our Lexus VIN decoder does the same job.

Read the first three characters for the maker and country, characters 4 to 8 for the model and engine, the 10th for the model year and the 11th for the plant, then confirm it in NHTSA's free decoder. The Camry VIN 4T1B11HK8KU123456, for example, returned a 2019 Camry with the 2.5L engine built in Georgetown, Kentucky.
