Crash test ratings
NHTSA NCAP crash test ratings
New Car Assessment ProgramNCAP crash tests measure how well a vehicle protects occupants in controlled frontal crash, side crash, and rollover scenarios. Stars are awarded per category (5 = safest). These laboratory results are independent of owner complaints and are performed by NHTSA engineers on new production vehicles.
NCAP crash test ratings for this model are not yet loaded or this vehicle was not tested in the years analyzed. NHTSA tests a subset of new vehicles each year. Check nhtsa.gov/ratings directly for the latest results.

RIM'S CRACKING I PURCHASED THIS CAR IN AUGUST OF 2018 ACCORDING TO THE ODOMETER IN HAD JUST A LITTLE MORE THAN 28000 MILES OTHER THAN THE RIMS I'VE BEEN VERY PLEASE WITH THE CAR I TOOK THE CAR BACK TO THE PLACE WHERE I PURCHASED IT THEY ACCESS THE DAMAGES AND SAID THAT THEY COULD BE REPAIRED LESS THAN 2 MONTHS LATER AFTER THE REPAIR ONE OF THEM HAS CRACKED AGAIN THE CRACKS WAS ON THE BACK SIDE OF THE RIM I HAVE ALSO DISCOVERED THAT ON ONE OF THEM THERE'S A CRACK ON THE SPOKE AND THAT'S WHAT PROMPTED ME TO FILE THIS COMPLAINT I'VE HAD PROBLEMS WITH 3 OUT OF 4 RAMS THAT I KNOW OF. I'M SERIOUSLY CONCERNED ABOUT THIS PROBLEM.
VEHICLE IS EXHIBITING AN INTERMITTENT VIBRATION THAT APPEARS TO BE COMING FROM UNDER THE VEHICLE AND CAN BE FELT IN BOTH THE DRIVER, PASSENGER SEAT AND CENTER CONSOLE WHILE DRIVING AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS. TOOK VEHICLE IN TO THE DEALER TO DIAGNOSE PROBLEM. GENERAL MANAGER AS WELL AS SHOP FOREMAN DROVE VEHICLE TO CONFIRM ABNORMAL VIBRATION AND SCHEDULED SERVICE. AFTER SEVERAL ATTEMPTS AT DIAGNOSING PROBLEM, I WAS TOLD THAT THE VIBRATION IS NORMAL WITH THIS MODEL. THERE ARE TWO PROBLEMS WRONG WITH THAT ANSWER, 1) IF THIS IS A NORMAL VIBRATION, THEN WHY ATTEMPT TO DIAGNOSE THE ISSUE IN THE FIRST PLACE? AND 2) SINCE THIS IS NOT A NORMAL VIBRATION, BEING THAT IT IS STRONG ENOUGH TO BE FELT INSIDE THE PASSENGER COMPARTMENT, WHAT OTHER COMPONENTS OF THE DRIVELINE ARE BEING AFFECTED BY THIS VIBRATION AND HAVE THE POTENTIAL OVER TIME TO HAVE CATESTROPHIC FAILURE? THE VEHICLE IS UNDER FULL FACTORY WARRANTY, SO ONE WOULD THINK THAT EVERY AVAILABLE OPTION TO DIAGNOSE ISSUE WOULD BE EXPLORED BEFORE SETTLING ON ,"THESE VEHICLES JUST VIBRATE". WHERE IS THE SAFETY RECALL TO REMEDY THIS PROBLEM? OR IS THIS SIMPLY A CASE OF NOT WANTING TO DO THE WARRANTY WORK? EITHER WAY, THE POTENTIAL FOR DISASTER EXIST! *JS
The contact owns a 2014 BMW 650I. The contact stated that the front driver's side door failed to open as needed. The contact stated that the central locking system and key failed to unlock the doors. There was no warning light illuminated. The contact had to exit the vehicle through the front passengerβs side door. Additionally, both doors became inoperable. The vehicle was taken to the local dealer, where it was diagnosed and determined that the fuse was faulty. The number 14 and 15 fuses were blown. The fuses were replaced, and the vehicle repaired, but the failure recurred. The vehicle was taken back to the local dealer, who informed him that additional diagnostic testing was needed. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was contacted and referred to the NHTSA Hotline. The failure mileage was approximately 99,465.
REGULARLY, PERHAPS EVERY 2 MONTHS, MY CAR'S AUTOMATIC EMERGENCY BRAKING SYSTEM WILL ACTIVATE WITHOUT CAUSE. IT HAS ALWAYS HAPPENED ON A HIGHWAY AND IT SEEMS TO BE RELATED TO WHEN I PASS A LARGE TRUCK. THE SYSTEM WILL TRIGGER, CAUSING A BEEPING NOISE AND AN IMAGE OF A CAR TO SHOW UP IN THE HEADS-UP DISPLAY. ABOUT HALF THE TIME, THE BRAKES WILL BE APPLIED VERY HARD. THIS SITUATION ONLY LASTS FOR PERHAPS A SECOND OR TWO AND THEN DISAPPEARS. THERE IS NEVER A CAR IN FRONT OF ME SO THERE IS NO THREAT AND NO REASON FOR THE SYSTEM TO TRIGGER. AS I MENTIONED, IT SEEMS LIKE THIS FALSE (OR PHANTOM) TRIGGER COINCIDES WITH PASSING A LARGE TRUCK. PART OF MY FRUSTRATION WITH THIS IS THAT WHEN I SPEAK WITH BMW SERVICE, THEY SAY THEY ARE UNAWARE OF ANY SUCH ISSUES WITH THE SYSTEM BUT THAT I'M WELCOME TO HAVE THEM REVIEW IT FOR SEVERAL HUNDRED DOLLARS. SINCE I'M NOT CONFIDENT THAT THE MECHANICS AT MY LOCAL DEALER CAN OR WILL FIND ANY ISSUES WITH THE SYSTEM I DON'T WANT TO SIMPLY THROW AWAY THIS MONEY. I'M ENTHUSIASTIC ABOUT THESE NEW SAFETY SYSTEMS BUT THE MANUFACTURERS SHOULD SUPPORT THEM FOR PERHAPS 10 YEARS. THEY SHOULD BE REQUIRED TO INVESTIGATE FALSE TRIGGERS AND ALSO TO ANNUALLY CHECK THE SYSTEM IS WORKING RELIABLY. WITHOUT THIS, PEOPLE WILL BEGIN TO TURN THESE SYSTEMS OFF AS THEY BEGIN TO FEAR THEM AS I DO.
DURING ROUTINE SERVICE LAST MONTH, LOCAL BMW DEALER FOUND THE DRIVE SHAFT REAR GUIBO/FLEXIBLE DISC WAS CRACKING AND RECOMMENDED IMMEDIATE ACTION. IT'S THE SAME PROBLEM AS WAS RECALLED ON OTHER BMW MODELS (SEE RECALL CAMPAIGN 17V-067). I REPORTED IT TO BMW BUT BMW REFUSED TO TAKE ANY ACTION OR TO ASSIST. COST TO FIX IS ALMOST $1000. THE DEALER INFORMED ME THAT IF NOT FIXED, THE DRIVE SHAFT COULD SEPARATE FROM THE VEHICLE. YIKES! I BELIEVE BMW SHOULD FIX/RECALL THIS. THE ORIGINAL MSRP ON THIS CAR WAS OVER $103,000 - IN MY OPINION, THIS DEFECT SHOULD NOT HAPPEN ON SUCH A CAR, ESPECIALLY AT ONLY 57,000 MILES.

BOUGHT THIS CAR NEW ON 6/10/14 IN ILLINOIS. AT THE TIME OF PURCHASE THE DEALER TRIED TO SELL ME 10K WORTH OF ADDITIONAL WARRANTIES. I ASKED WHICH ONE(S) I REALLY NEEDED AND THEY SAID YOU NEED THE TIRE WARRANTY. THE CAR HAS 12K MILES ON IT. HAVE HAD THREE SEPARATE INCIDENTS OF BROKEN TIRES. TWO IN SUMMER OF 2014 AND ONE IN APRIL OF 2015. ALL THREE TOOK PLACE ON INTERSTATE HIGHWAYS CAUSED BY IMPACTING HOLES IN THE PAVEMENT. I HAVE CONTACTED BMW NATIONAL AND THEY CLAIM IT IS DUE TO BAD GOODYEAR TIRES. ODDLY ENOUGH THEY INSIST ON REPLACING THEM WITH THE SAME TIRE. THEY ARE CHARGING ABOUT $450/TIRE AND I DON'T BELIEVE THAT A TIRE OF THAT QUALITY CAN BE THAT DEFECTIVE. BETWEEN THE DEALER TELLING ME THAT YOU REALLY NEED THE TIRE WARRANTY, ANOTHER DEALER AND TOW TRUCK DRIVER TELLING ME THAT THESE CARS ARE BEING BROUGHT IN CONSTANTLY FOR BLOWN TIRES I DON'T THINK IT IS THE TIRES. I THINK IT IS DEFECTIVE DESIGN ON THE PART OF BMW. THE 19" WHEELS ARE SO BIG THAT THEY REQUIRE A 40 SERIES TIRE WHICH MEAN THERE IS JUST TOO LITTLE SIDEWALL TO TAKE EVERYDAY INTERSTATE STRESS. KEEP IN MIND ALL HAPPENED DURING FAIR WEATHER DRIVING, NOT WINTER. BMW THOUGHT IT WOULD BE REALLY COOL TO PUT OEM 19" WHEELS ON THE CAR WITHOUT CONSIDERING WHETHER THESE WHEELS, REQUIRING EXTREMELY LOW PROFILE 40 SERIES TIRES, ON A HIGH PERFORMANCE CAR CAN HANDLE COMMON INTERSTATE ROAD ISSUES WITHOUT CAUSING PLY SEPARATIONS OR COMPLETELY BLOWING OUT. THESE BLOWOUTS ARE REALLY DANGEROUS AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS. I BELIEVE BMW SHOULD RECALL THESE VEHICLES AND REPLACE THE TIRES AND WHEELS WITH ONES THAT CAN HANDLE COMMON INTERSTATE ROAD CONDITIONS. CURRENTLY THEY TAKE NO RESPONSIBILITY FOR WHAT IS OBVIOUSLY THEIR DESIGN PROBLEM. BY BLAMING THE TIRE MANUFACTURER THEY GET COMPLETELY OFF THE HOOK AND THE NHTSA (SAFERCAR) NEEDS TO DO AN INVESTIGATION AND REQUIRE A RECALL TO FIX THE PROBLEM.
GOODYEAR EAGLE LS 2 RUN ON FLAT TIRES (245/40R19) DEVELOPED SIDEWALL BUBBLES ON 3 TIRES OVER 9KMILES. NO RIM DAMAGE, NOT EVEN A SCRATCH. I DID NOT HIT ANY MAJOR POTHOLES. THE ONLINE CUSTOMER REVIEWS ALSO CITE TERRIBLE EXPERIENCE WITH SIDE WALL BUBBLES.(SEE TIRERACK REVIEWS OF THIS TIRE). THE NHTSA COMPLAINT FORM ONLY ALLOWS FOR 1 COMPLAINT BUT THREE OF MY TIRES FAILED AT SEPARATE TIMES IN THE SAME MANNER. THE 1ST TIRE FAILED AT 6K, SECOND AT 9K AND THE LAST ONE AT 12K. *TR

THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED HOWEVER, THE FAILURE RECURRED. THE VEHICLE THEN WAS TAKEN TO ANOTHER DEALER WHERE A DIAGNOSTIC TEST WAS STILL PENDING. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE AND INFORMED THE CONTACT THAT THE VIN WAS NOT UNDER RECALL. THE CONTACT REFERENCED NHTSA CAMPAIGN NUMBER: 12V161000 (ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING) AS A POSSIBLE SOLUTION TO THE FAILURE HOWEVER, THE VIN WAS NOT INCLUDED. AT APPROXIMATELY 120,000 MILES MY ENGINE OIL PUMP WENT OUT CAUSING MY CAR TO STALL WHILE ON THE HIGHWAY TRAVELING AT 70 MILES PER HOUR. THE BMW DEALERSHIP SAID TO ME THAT EVEN THOUGH MY CAR MEETS THE MILES SPECIFICATIONS THE ENGINE OIL HAS METAL PIECES IN IT THEREFORE THEY WILL NOT COVER A NEW WARRANTY UNDER THEIR LEMON LAW. WHILE DRIVING MY CAR ON HIGHWAY 20 WEST MY ENGINE LOSS ALL POWER MAKING MY CAR SLOW COMPLETELY DOWN. I WAS IN HEAVY TRAFFIC AND I HAD TO MOVE OVER TWO LANES TO GET TO THE SHOULDER OF THE HIGHWAY. ONCE MY CAR STOPPED THE CAR PUT ITS SELF IN PARK AND WOULD NOT ALLOW ME TO SELECT ANY GEAR. COME TO FIND OUT THE TURBO CHARGER WEN OUT IN MY CAR CAUSING THE CAR TO ACT IN THIS UN SAFE MANNER. A WARNING LIGHT FOR THE PASSENGER SIDE FRONT AIRBAG IS ON. BMW WANTS TO CHARGE ME $1500 TO REPLACE THE FAULTY AIRBAG. HOW CAN IT BE DAMAGED IF IT'S NEVER BEEN USED? HOW IS THIS REPAIR MY RESPONSIBILITY? ADDITIONALLY, THIS BMW BURNS OIL. IT SEEMS TO BE A PROBLEM WITH ALL 8 CYLINDER MODELS AS THEY AGE. I HAVE TO ADD A QUART OF OIL EVERY 300 MILES OR SO AND THE CAR BLOWS BLACK SMOKE VIA THE EXHAUST. I'VE SPENT $1300 TO REPAIR IT, BUT IT DIDN'T REPAIR THE ISSUE. NOW I'M BEING TOLD IT'S A $10,000 REPAIR. HOW IS A PROBLEM THAT'S SYSTEMATIC WITH SO MANY 8 CYLINDER BMWS MY RESPONSIBILITY?
WHILE DRIVING MY PASSENGER SEAT BACK BURNT MY WIFE'S BACK AND WAS SMOKING. I TURNED THE SEAT COOLING OFF AND IT STOPPED.
RECEIVE A "PASSENGER RESTRAINT SYSTEM" FAILURE. BMW EL CAJON DEALERSHIP DIAGNOSED PROBLEM AS PASSENGER OCCUPANCY SEAT MAT SENSOR. THIS IS A VERY SERIOUS ISSUE. THE FRONT PASSENGER SEAT OCCUPANT DETECTION MAT DETERMINES IF AND HOW THE PASSENGER FRONTAL AIR BAG SHOULD DEPLOY IN A CRASH. THIS KNOW BMW ISSUE DEVELOPS CRACKS AND COULD LEAD TO A SYSTEM FAILURE. IF THE ELECTRONIC SENSING MAT IN THE FRONT PASSENGER SEAT FAILS, THIS WILL DISABLE THE FRONT PASSENGER AIR BAG AND THE AIR BAG WILL NOT DEPLOY DURING A CRASH. THE KNOWN BMW DEFECTIVE SEAT SENSOR IS WELL DOCUMENTED200,000 BMWS RECALLED IN 2008, 77,000 IN 2013, AND 2,158 IN 2017. The basics
How to read this data
Complaints, recalls, investigations β hereβs what each number actually tells you about a used BMW 650I, in plain English.
What is an NHTSA Complaint?
An NHTSA safety complaint is a report filed directly by a vehicle owner or driver describing a safety-related issue. Anyone can submit a complaint at NHTSA.gov. The number of complaints is a signal of how common a problem is β but complaints per model-year matter more than raw totals, since popular vehicles naturally receive more reports. The BMW 650I has 47 complaints on record across 10 model years.
What is a Safety Recall?
A safety recall is a mandatory campaign issued by NHTSA when a vehicle component poses an unreasonable risk to safety or does not comply with federal motor vehicle safety standards. Unlike complaints (which are owner-reported), recalls are formally investigated and confirmed by regulators. Manufacturers must fix recalled vehicles free of charge. The BMW 650I has 4 recall campaigns in the NHTSA database.
What Are Crash Complaints?
Crash complaints are NHTSA filings where the owner indicates a crash occurred as part of the incident. 0 of the BMW 650I's 47 complaints involved a crash. This metric is particularly important because it indicates how often defects resulted in actual collisions β a key safety signal beyond general reliability.
How Is the Reliability Verdict Calculated?
The reliability verdict (Average) is generated by analyzing the vehicle's total complaints, recall history, crash complaint ratio, fire complaint ratio, and top component failures relative to class averages. This verdict gives buyers a quick interpretation before they review year-level details and VIN-level history. It should be treated as one decision input, not a substitute for a VIN-specific report.
Why Do Newer Years Have Fewer Complaints?
Newer model years appear to have fewer complaints because there has been less time for owners to file them. Complaints accumulate over years of ownership. A 2020 model year vehicle will typically show fewer complaints than a 2015 model year even if it is less reliable β simply because fewer owners have had time to report issues. Focus on complaints per year of market presence when comparing across model years.
Fleet Data vs. Individual VIN
Everything on this page reflects aggregated data across all BMW 650I vehicles on the road β not any specific car. Two BMW 650I vehicles of the same year can have very different histories: one may have been in three accidents and have an open recall; another may be clean. A VIN check gives you the individual car's history: accidents, title brands, odometer records, service history, and real-time recall status.
What Are NHTSA Investigations?
When NHTSA receives a pattern of related safety complaints, it opens a formal investigation. A Preliminary Evaluation (PE) is the first stage β NHTSA determines if a safety defect may exist. If evidence is strong, it escalates to an Engineering Analysis (EA), which can result in a mandatory recall. The BMW 650I has 0 investigations on record (0 active). Investigations listed above may have already led to the recalls shown on this page.
