Check engine light continuously goes on and off. As a result, had car diagnostic tested which resulted in the following $966.79 repairs: -remove & replace evaporative emissions system leak detection unit using the following parts: -vapor canister purge valve -fuel vapor detection pump w/ ventilation line leak diagnostic pump. Engine light stayed off for almost 2 months. Now engine light is back on. There is a recall for my model and year car 2022 x1, but my vin# is NOT indicated in recall: Summary: BMW of North America, LLC (BMW) is recalling certain 2022 X1 xDrive 28i, X3 xDrive30i, and 228i Gran Coupe vehicles. The high-pressure fuel rail may crack and result in a fuel leak within the engine compartment. This recall should be broader and include all 2022 x1s. If my car were covered under recall, I don't believe that I would be having engine light issues.
Today is 1/21/26. My car has had problems since 12/4/25 when I started getting drivetrain warning lights. After "call roadside assistance" prompts, it will start, but a drivetrain fault appears on the dash. Many faults have appeared at the dealer and I have it in writing that there is nothing more they can do. They escalated the issue to BMW with no resolution, to date. I have requested a buy-back and they no longer return my calls. In terms of safety, I'm not sure what could happen if the drivetrain fault light is on. On three separate occasions, it told me that the car was in danger of rolling over when I was on a flat surface. Another time, the car wouldn't go over 30 mph. This didn't feel safe! The dealer has reloaded software many times. Once they said I could pick it up and when I started it to drive home, the fault light appeared. They said other cars have come in for similar issues, but the software update has solved the problem. They said they have never seen anything like this before. As far as I know, other than the local dealer, all other BMW inspections have been done remotely. Documentation of what as happened every day is attached. I also have the back-and-forth correspondence with the dealer and with BMW North America if needed.
On multiple occasions, maybe up to 10, the software controlling the dashboard LCD screens reset while driving and completely goes black. I donβt have a speedometer. I do not have HVAC controls. I donβt have a gas gauge. Iβve taken the car in multiple times. They replaced the head unit. But it keeps occurring. OEM Tires: 225/55/R18 - Bridgestone Turanza All Season I am writing to raise a formal concern regarding the premature wear of OEM tires installed on my leased 2025 BMW X1. At approximately 15,000 miles, I was advised to replace the tires at 4/32" tread depth, which is significantly below the longevity historically expected of OEM tires. This raises serious concerns around vehicle safety, environmental impact due to early disposal, and the burden placed on consumers. Past OEM tires demonstrated substantially better durability, and I am seeking clarity on what has changed in design, materials, or standards that now allows for reduced tire life. I also request clarification on how this aligns with the safety commitments and environmental responsibility, and whether consumer interests are being adequately considered. I look forward to your written response. Regards, [XXX] INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)
The contact owns a 2025 BMW 1X. The contact stated while at an ATM, the vehicle was shifted into drive(D), but the vehicle unintendedly shifted into park(P) and failed to move. There were no warning lights illuminated. The contact stated that the failure had occurred in an enclosed area. The contact was unable to exit the vehicle. The contact continued to restart the vehicle. The Police was contacted for assistance. The vehicle was released approximately 10 minutes later. While exiting the vehicle, the alarm engaged. The local dealer was contacted, and an unknown diagnosis was provided. The vehicle was not repaired. The dealer tested a BMW X2 where the failure was duplicated. The manufacturer was contacted, but no assistance was provided. The failure mileage was approximately 4,300. The VIN was not available.
Iβve had entertainment issues. This morning I was driving on a 65 MPH highway when the LED screens on the dashboard went completely black, including the driver side with the speedometer. After approximately 10 seconds the driverβs side came back on, but all of them are warning lights were illuminated. At the same time the LED screen with the entertainment system performed a restart which took approximately 20 to 30 seconds. The car is only two months old and Iβve had numerous problems. I was able to take a photo. In the photo, the driver side is back on but you can see all of the warning lights are lit up and not all information is provided on the screen. The speedometer in the picture says Iβm going 39 miles an hour, but that is not true. I was going at least 50.
We had forward collision mitigation option on this vehicle but it didn't brake to stop. This caused to rear end a SUV infront on service road and causing big damage to both vehicles. There was a recall on previous year vehicles on the braking system but were told this was fixed in this 2025 model.
The contact filed the complaint regarding a rental 2025 BMW X1. The contact stated that while the vehicle was parked, the contact went outside and noticed a fire exiting the engine hood on the front passenger side. The vehicle was unoccupied. The contact stated that within a couple of minutes, the entire front of the vehicle was on fire, and a couple of minutes later the entire vehicle was on fire. The local fire department arrived and extinguished the fire. The vehicle was towed to a local tow yard. The contact was informed by the fire official, who informed the contact that the fire was assumed to have been started from the front passenger's brake system. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure, and a case was filed. The failure mileage was approximately 1,000. The VIN was unavailable.
I was driving a BMW loaner vehicle provided by the dealership while my own car was being serviced. The tire pressure dropped to dangerously low levels, but the vehicle only displayed a vague βCheck Tire Pressureβ message. There was no urgent alert or clear warning that the vehicle was unsafe to drive, even as the tire reached dangerously low pressure. This lack of escalation poses a serious safety risk to drivers who may believe the message is routine or non-urgent. I had to swerve to avoid traffic and get myself and my kids out of oncoming traffic's way. I later confirmed with the dealership that this is the default behavior and that the vehicle does not provide a critical or emergency warning when tire pressure reaches hazardous levels. I believe this is a failure in the alerting design that could endanger drivers, and it should be reviewed by NHTSA for safety compliance.
When backing up, my new 2025 X1 fails to warn of crossing vehicle traffic and pedestrian traffic. I have had two near misses of crossing vehicles and one near miss of hitting a pedestrian.
The fuel tank got punctured on the freeway causing the car to lose power. The problem seems that BMW plastic fuel tank is located on the right side at the bottom of the car so any stone or particle on the freeway can puncture the plastic tank from the bottom causing no fuel and the car losing power. Seems like that is problem with design and BMW is aware of it since the new models of the car starting 2023 have an extra underbody protection for the fuel tank which is missing on the previous year models.
Wastegate actuator turbo failure. Causes sudden loss of power to engine. Turbo function impacted. Drivetrain malfunction warning on dashboard. No prior warning sent. Problem with wastegate has been confirmed by Independent Service Center. Found similar issue with BMW E-Series Model 530e xdrive sedan Production dates 2/22/17-6/18/20 which extended warranty to 15 yr/150000 miles for same part. I had a series of concerning incidents with my car. The trunk door was getting stuck halfway, but I was able to close it after turning on the engine. I also encountered a malfunction error on the backup camera, a Drive Train warning sign, and the car alarm going off by itself. The most alarming issue was when the car started smoking and then caught fire underneath the hood near the driver's side windshield. Thankfully, my father and I were able to put out the flames with a water hose before calling 911 to report the incident to the fire department. The car is considered a total per Geico Insurance.
it all started with the Battery and Powertrain and lound Loud niose from under my vehicle and my rear tail light code default. service forgetting to put the clamps back on i took the vehicle back from service and drove over 200 miles when the code for the above mention malfuntion appeared again they admitted the negilence of the service team...from that point on they my car was in and out of service for weeks at a time from September 2023 until Febuary 2024. I endlessly tried to resovle reimbursement and prove my vehicle was unsafe to drive and manufacture defects. i also consulted corporate several times submitting claim and nothing was esculated or followed up. listed below are the issues I have experienced on sevaral trips in my vehicle.I am in panic state each and every time I drive this vehicle. the codes and invetigation numbers are associted with the creen shots I obtained with the service machanics virtual video of my visits: 10228427 B220222 10177616 B010419 10176377 B610520 10228428 B120723 1024907 B611305 10178993 B160319 My Request would be a Brand Buy Back or my Rights for claim under Indiana lemon law consumer act.
I got my BMW X1 in December of 2020 and currently has 21,000 miles. I've notice unusual wear and tear on the driver side seatbelt so I brought it into the dealer but all they said was that it needs to be replaced. I don't think this is a normal wear and tear because as I've said, I only drove this vehicle for 21,000 miles. The tear is expanding and I believe this can be a serious safety issue during an accident or sudden stops. I was concerned if this was an issue to similar vehicles or if it's just my vehicle.
Check Engine light checked at dealership revealed Fuel in the NVLD System! They had to replace the NVLD, Charcoal canister, and the Tank vent valve. They accused me of overfilling my fuel tank! I am 100% certain that I NEVER overfill fuel whatsoever. I am afraid this may cause other drivers to ignore the problem resulting in vehicle fires! Please investigate further or ask for repair frequency of this problem from BMW. I owned a BMW for almost 20 years and never experienced this problem! Thanks
The vehicleβs sunroof exploded spontaneously. This occured on an elevated expressway with no access above the vehicle. There was no physical impact to the vehicle. There were no visible warning signs. The sunroof shattered into small shards.
On 7/1/22, my Vehicle Alert came on advising that the front brake pads need replacement and to schedule an appointment within 1,000 miles. I called the same day to schedule an appointment with my local dealer. However, the next available date was on 7/13/22. I specifically requested an earlier date, but that was the only available slot they had. I brought my vehicle in on 7/13/22 (alert now says schedule an appointment within 800 miles so i had driven 200 miles) and was given an estimate to replace the front brake pads. On the same day, i get a call from the dealer service advisor that the front rotors also needs replacement as they were damaged due to continued driving with worn down brake pads. They also advised the engine mount was cracked and leaking. My safety concern is that the alert should have came on sooner as I called to schedule an appointment the same day the alert came on but the only available time for almost two weeks later. There should have been a more urgent alert (i.e. replace within 50 miles) as I would have then made separate arrangements immediately. Alternatively, the alert should come on much earlier in the brake pads' wear detection. Instead, I was unknowingly driving my vehicle with dangerously damaged rotors due to the false sense of safety as the alert said schedule appointment within the next 1000 miles and I had only driven 200 miles. This put not only my safety at risk but others on the road as well should my brakes have failed. A crash would have been more dangerous in light of the cracked engine mount and leak. I understand brakes are wear and tear and customer pay but i feel that the alert system design and logic needs to be looked at as non-savvy drivers rely on them to make appointments accordingly.
On Sept 8, 2021, on I-5, North of Marysville, WA, a truck threw a rock through the lower radiator of our X1. We lost all coolant and car was hauled to BMW, Seattle on 9/9/21. On 9/10 service rep Josh Logan advised: "We confirmed that it does not come with a guard, but when you order a new part, that does come in conjunction." and that: "no warranty coverage, as it does not cover damages, so you would have to go through your insurance for that one." We did so and USAA covered the amount above the $1000 deductible. It is unacceptable that the need for the rock shield was clearly a known condition, yet when damage occurred due to it not being installed from new, that the replacement was not covered under warranty. Before You Buy, Check the Exact BMW X1
These pages show model-year patterns across 10years. Enter a VIN to verify the exact vehicle's accident history, title brands, odometer records, and open recall status before purchase.
π Understanding This Data
What is an NHTSA Complaint?
An NHTSA safety complaint is a report filed directly by a vehicle owner or driver describing a safety-related issue. Anyone can submit a complaint at NHTSA.gov. The number of complaints is a signal of how common a problem is β but complaints per model-year matter more than raw totals, since popular vehicles naturally receive more reports. The BMW X1 has 350 complaints on record across 10 model years.
What is a Safety Recall?
A safety recall is a mandatory campaign issued by NHTSA when a vehicle component poses an unreasonable risk to safety or does not comply with federal motor vehicle safety standards. Unlike complaints (which are owner-reported), recalls are formally investigated and confirmed by regulators. Manufacturers must fix recalled vehicles free of charge. The BMW X1 has 25 recall campaigns in the NHTSA database.
What Are Crash Complaints?
Crash complaints are NHTSA filings where the owner indicates a crash occurred as part of the incident. 21 of the BMW X1's 350 complaints involved a crash. This metric is particularly important because it indicates how often defects resulted in actual collisions β a key safety signal beyond general reliability.
How Is the Reliability Verdict Calculated?
The reliability verdict (Poor) is generated by analyzing the vehicle's total complaints, recall history, crash complaint ratio, fire complaint ratio, and top component failures relative to class averages. This verdict gives buyers a quick interpretation before they review year-level details and VIN-level history. It should be treated as one decision input, not a substitute for a VIN-specific report.
Why Do Newer Years Have Fewer Complaints?
Newer model years appear to have fewer complaints because there has been less time for owners to file them. Complaints accumulate over years of ownership. A 2020 model year vehicle will typically show fewer complaints than a 2015 model year even if it is less reliable β simply because fewer owners have had time to report issues. Focus on complaints per year of market presence when comparing across model years.
Fleet Data vs. Individual VIN
Everything on this page reflects aggregated data across all BMW X1 vehicles on the road β not any specific car. Two BMW X1 vehicles of the same year can have very different histories: one may have been in three accidents and have an open recall; another may be clean. A VIN check gives you the individual car's history: accidents, title brands, odometer records, service history, and real-time recall status.
What Are NHTSA Investigations?
When NHTSA receives a pattern of related safety complaints, it opens a formal investigation. A Preliminary Evaluation (PE) is the first stage β NHTSA determines if a safety defect may exist. If evidence is strong, it escalates to an Engineering Analysis (EA), which can result in a mandatory recall. The BMW X1 has 0 investigations on record (0 active). Investigations listed above may have already led to the recalls shown on this page.
