Crash test ratings
NHTSA NCAP crash test ratings
New Car Assessment ProgramNCAP crash tests measure how well a vehicle protects occupants in controlled frontal crash, side crash, and rollover scenarios. Stars are awarded per category (5 = safest). These laboratory results are independent of owner complaints and are performed by NHTSA engineers on new production vehicles.
NCAP crash test ratings for this model are not yet loaded or this vehicle was not tested in the years analyzed. NHTSA tests a subset of new vehicles each year. Check nhtsa.gov/ratings directly for the latest results.

The contact owns a 2006 Mitsubishi Raider. The contact stated that while driving at low speeds through a residential area, the vehicle inadvertently lost motive power, prompting the contact to pull over to the shoulder of the roadway at the end of a cul-de-sac and shift the vehicle into park. Upon attempting to exit the cul-de-sac the contact stated that the vehicle failed to shift into reverse, after which the contact shifted the vehicle back into drive. Immediately upon shifting back into drive the vehicle aggressively accelerated independently, causing a brief loss of control of the vehicle. The contact was able to regain control of the vehicle brought the vehicle to a complete stop and switched the vehicle off; deciding then to discontinue driving the vehicle. No warning lights were illuminated. The vehicle was not towed to the dealer or an independent mechanic. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. Hi- We have been trying to get our Mitsubishi Raider 2006 recall for an exploding sharp metal pieces that can cause death fixed with zero help. We have been without a car for over one year due to being ignored by Mitsubishi Corporate and our closest Mitsubishi Cutter Dealership. We live on an island in Hawaii that does not have a dealership so car must be shipped to Oahu to be repaired. Talked to manager at Cutter Mitsubishi many times and she said it’s Mitsubishis problem to figure out. Mitsubishi Corporate has been contacted at least 4 times with nobody contacting me back. Case worker [XXX] has completely ignored my case. Called recall number and have filed 5 cases now with no response. I will have to file a lawsuit to get help. Can someone please call [XXX] @ [XXX] INFORMATION Redacted PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6).
VEHICLE WAS INVOLVED IN AN SERIOUS OFFSET HEAD ON CRASH WITH A FULL SIZE CHEVROLET SILVERADO. THE SIDE APRON AIR BAG FAILED TO DEPLOY ON BOTH SIDES. BOTH VEHICLES WERE TRAVELING STRAIGHT ON A TWO LANE RURAL ROAD WITH A SPEED LIMIT OF 45MPH. DON'T KNOW ACTUAL VEHICLE SPEEDS. CHEVROLET VEERED INTO THE OPPOSITE LANE AND STRUCK THE MITSUBISHI RAIDER XLS TRAVELING IN THE OPPOSITE DIRECTION. I BELIEVE THE FAILURE OF THE DRIVER SIDE CURTAIN AIRBAG CONTRIBUTED TO THE SERIOUSNESS OF THE MITSUBISHI DRIVERS INJURIES.

HAD MY PASSENGER SIDE AIR BAG REPLACED BY LANDERS CHRYSLER DODGE IN LITTLE ROCK, AR AS SET UP BY MITSUBISHI MOTORS SINCE THERE IS NOT A MITSUBISHI DEALER IN ARKANSAS. THIS NEW AIR BAG WAS SUPPLIED BY MITSUBISHI AND INSTALLED ON FEB. 12,2018 AND THE NHTSA RECORDS STILL SHOW THE RECALL AS INCOMPLETE.
NO DEALERS IN MY STATE TO PERFORM THIS PASSENGER SIDE AIRBAG REPLACEMENT. CANNOT LOCATE A MITSUBISHI DEALER TO DO THIS RECALL.
TAKATA RECALL -SERRA MITSUBISHI, BIRMINGHAM AL.- I RECEIVED A RECALL NOTICE FOR MY AIR BAGS. IT TELLS ME IN THE LETTER THAT A LOANER/RENTAL VEHICLE WILL BE PROVIDED. I CALL FOR AN APPOINTMENT, DEALER WILL NOT PROVIDE A VEHICLE FOR THE 3 HR REPAIR. I ONLY NEEDED A RIDE BACK TO WORK WHILE WAITING ON REPAIR. NOT LIKE I WANTED A VEHICLE TO RIDE AROUND IN. I CALLED THE MITSUBISHI HOT LINE AND WAS TOLD IT WILL BE PROVIDED. IF THE SERVICE MANAGER WILL CALL THE REGIONAL MANAGER IT WILL BE STRAIGHTENED OUT. I CALL THE DEALER BACK AND PAST THE SAME INFORMATION. WAITED TWO DAYS FOR A RESPONSE AFTER BEING TOLD THEY WOULD CALL ME BACK. I FINALLY CALLED THEM TO HEAR THE SAME STORY OF NOT PROVIDING A RIDE FOR THE THREE HOUR REPAIR. IF THIS IS NOT GOING TO HAPPEN, THEN WHY IS IT WRITTEN IN BLACK AND WHITE, INFORMING OWNERS THAT IT BE PROVIDED. IT APPEARS TO ME THEY ARE MISLEADING OR LYING TO THEIR CUSTOMERS, AND DO NOT CARE IF THEIR CUSTOMERS ARE INCONVENIENCED. THE DEALERSHIP IS IN BIRMINGHAM AL. "SERRA MITSUBISHI".

"TAKATA RECALL" I RECEIVED A SAFETY RECALL NOTICE IN THE MAIL, JULY OF 2016, FOR THE PASSENGER SIDE AIRBAG (MITSUBISHI HAD ALREADY REPLACED THE DRIVER SIDE AIRBAG OVER A YEAR AGO. I CALLED OUR MITSUBISHI DEALERSHIP @ 1-850-785-1591, TO SET UP AN APPOINTMENT TO REPLACE THE AIRBAG. I WAS TOLD THEY WERE NOT YET AVAILABLE, & THAT WE WOULD BE NOTIFIED WHEN THEY WERE. WE STOPPED BY THE DEALERSHIP ON 10-24-16 & WERE TOLD THE SAME THING (PART NOT AVAILABLE). I CALLED THE DEALERSHIP TODAY 12-12-16 & WAS TOLD THE SAME THING. THE PARTS MANAGER SAID HE DID NOT HAVE A TELEPHONE # OR PART # TO EVEN ORDER THE AIRBAG. THIS RECALL/DELAY WAS DISCUSSED ON THE NATIONAL NEWS & GAVE THIS WEBSITE TO SUBMIT A COMPLAINT. AIRBAGS BEING REPLACED FIRST APPLIED TO THE ELDERLY OR HOT ZONES (I LIVE IN FLORIDA). MY VEHICLE IS AN OLDER MODEL WITH MANY MILES & IT IS VERY HOT DURING THE SUMMER MONTHS. I QUALIFY TO BE IN THAT 1ST GROUP TO BE REPLACED. PLEASE LET ME KNOW, WHAT I MUST DO, TO GET MY PASSENGER SIDE AIRBAG TO BE REPLACED. (I DON'T WANT TO DIE FROM METAL SHARDS FLYING OUT OF THE AIRBAG COMPARTMENT) THIS 6 MONTH DELAY IS NOT ACCEPTABLE.

The basics
How to read this data
Complaints, recalls, investigations — here’s what each number actually tells you about a used Mitsubishi Raider, in plain English.
What is an NHTSA Complaint?
An NHTSA safety complaint is a report filed directly by a vehicle owner or driver describing a safety-related issue. Anyone can submit a complaint at NHTSA.gov. The number of complaints is a signal of how common a problem is — but complaints per model-year matter more than raw totals, since popular vehicles naturally receive more reports. The Mitsubishi Raider has 142 complaints on record across 10 model years.
What is a Safety Recall?
A safety recall is a mandatory campaign issued by NHTSA when a vehicle component poses an unreasonable risk to safety or does not comply with federal motor vehicle safety standards. Unlike complaints (which are owner-reported), recalls are formally investigated and confirmed by regulators. Manufacturers must fix recalled vehicles free of charge. The Mitsubishi Raider has 11 recall campaigns in the NHTSA database.
What Are Crash Complaints?
Crash complaints are NHTSA filings where the owner indicates a crash occurred as part of the incident. 12 of the Mitsubishi Raider's 142 complaints involved a crash. This metric is particularly important because it indicates how often defects resulted in actual collisions — a key safety signal beyond general reliability.
How Is the Reliability Verdict Calculated?
The reliability verdict (Below Average) is generated by analyzing the vehicle's total complaints, recall history, crash complaint ratio, fire complaint ratio, and top component failures relative to class averages. This verdict gives buyers a quick interpretation before they review year-level details and VIN-level history. It should be treated as one decision input, not a substitute for a VIN-specific report.
Why Do Newer Years Have Fewer Complaints?
Newer model years appear to have fewer complaints because there has been less time for owners to file them. Complaints accumulate over years of ownership. A 2020 model year vehicle will typically show fewer complaints than a 2015 model year even if it is less reliable — simply because fewer owners have had time to report issues. Focus on complaints per year of market presence when comparing across model years.
Fleet Data vs. Individual VIN
Everything on this page reflects aggregated data across all Mitsubishi Raider vehicles on the road — not any specific car. Two Mitsubishi Raider vehicles of the same year can have very different histories: one may have been in three accidents and have an open recall; another may be clean. A VIN check gives you the individual car's history: accidents, title brands, odometer records, service history, and real-time recall status.
What Are NHTSA Investigations?
When NHTSA receives a pattern of related safety complaints, it opens a formal investigation. A Preliminary Evaluation (PE) is the first stage — NHTSA determines if a safety defect may exist. If evidence is strong, it escalates to an Engineering Analysis (EA), which can result in a mandatory recall. The Mitsubishi Raider has 0 investigations on record (0 active). Investigations listed above may have already led to the recalls shown on this page.
