Crash test ratings

NHTSA NCAP crash test ratings

New Car Assessment Program

NCAP crash tests measure how well a vehicle protects occupants in controlled frontal crash, side crash, and rollover scenarios. Stars are awarded per category (5 = safest). These laboratory results are independent of owner complaints and are performed by NHTSA engineers on new production vehicles.

NCAP crash test ratings for this model are not yet loaded or this vehicle was not tested in the years analyzed. NHTSA tests a subset of new vehicles each year. Check nhtsa.gov/ratings directly for the latest results.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEMMay 2025

The back up camera does not work in my car. It works on occasion, very rare occasion. There is an active recall for this same issue with the manufacturer but according to my VIN it’s not included but I’m having same issues as the other cars are having.

BACK OVER PREVENTIONApr 2025

The back up camera does not work . It is having the same issues in the current recall for newer models. It works very intermittently. Maybe works one out of 10 - 15 times.

ENGINEMar 2025

While driving my 2020 Maserati Ghibli on a busy street, the engine suddenly seized without warning. The vehicle abruptly lost power, and I had to maneuver to the side of the road while traffic was flowing around me. Fortunately, I was able to avoid a collision, but the situation posed a serious risk to my safety and that of other drivers nearby. Component/System Involved: The engine is the primary component that failed. It completely seized and rendered the vehicle inoperable. The engine remains available for inspection upon request. This failure occurred on a heavily trafficked street, which made the sudden loss of power particularly hazardous. Had I been on the highway or in faster-moving traffic, the outcome could have been far worse. I was unable to maintain speed or control acceleration, placing myself and others in danger. The problem was confirmed by a certified Maserati dealership. Their service team diagnosed the issue as a complete engine seizure and confirmed that the engine would need replacement. There were no warning lamps, dashboard messages, or unusual engine behavior prior to the failure. The engine failed suddenly and without any observable symptoms. Manufacturer Response: Maserati has declined to offer any assistance or compensation for the failure, citing the vehicle's warranty status. However, based on my experience and reports from other owners of similar issues, I believe this points to a larger reliability or manufacturing issue that should be formally investigated. They instead offered me to perform certain diagnostics to make a final determination if they are going to offer any assistance. They are asking me to pay $2400 for the diagnostics which I think it's unreasonable. I respectfully request that NHTSA investigate this matter and evaluate whether similar engine seizures in Maserati vehicles are part of a broader safety defect. While driving around 45mph I began to smell a burning scent. This intensified and smoke began to enter the cabin of the car. I pulled over and called 911. After opening the hood the fire department extinguished a small fire in the engine compartment just forward of the driver steering wheel area.

THE CAR UNINTENTIONALLY ACCELERATES. THIS HAPPENED ON 3 DIFFERENT OCCASIONS. THE 1ST OCCURRENCE HAPPENED APPROXIMATELY TWO WEEKS AFTER PURCHASING THE VEHICLE. IT'S A 2015 MODEL. I PURCHASED A VEHICLE IN AUGUST 2020. THE 2ND OCCURRENCE HAPPENED NOV 12 AND TODAY NOV 21. THE 1ST TIME THIS HAPPENED I DID SOME RESEARCH AND IT SEEMED LIKE THERE WAS AN ISSUE WITH MASERATIS FLOOR OWN FLOOR MATS. AT THE TIME AND PRIOR TO KNOWING THIS, I HAD PUT BRAND NEW FLOOR MATS OF MY OWN IN THE VEHICLE COMPLETELY UNAWARE THAT THIS WAS AN OEM ISSUE. AFTER THIS HAPPENED THE 1ST TIME, I REMOVED MY PERSONAL FLOOR MATS THINKING THAT WOULD SOLVE THE ISSUE. THE 2ND TIME THIS HAPPENED, THE ISSUE WAS SLIGHT AND THERE WERE NO OTHER CARS AROUND ME. I THOUGHT MAYBE IT WAS AN OPERATOR ISSUE USING MANUAL SHIFTING PERHAPS. AT ANY RATE I WAS ABLE TO REGAIN CONTROL OF THE 2ND OCCURRENCE RATHER QUICKLY TO THE POINT WHERE THIS WAS ALMOST UNNOTICEABLE. THIS THIRD TIME THE VEHICLE COMPLETELY LOST CONTROL AND I HAD TO DEPRESS THE BREAK PEDAL %100 IN TRAFFIC TO REGAIN CONTROL OF THE CAR. MEANWHILE, IT WOULD STILL CONTINUE TO DO THE ACCELERATION. THE CAR WAS SCREECHING AND ACCELERATING WITH ME DEPRESSING THE BRAKE PEDAL. I PULLED OFF SAFELY ON THE SIDE OF THE ROAD WITH THE BRAKE PEDAL 100% DEPRESSED. I THREW THE VEHICLE IN PARK AND THE PROBLEM WENT AWAY. THIS VEHICLE DOESN'T ALLOW YOU TO SHIFT INTO NEUTRAL WHILE OCCURRING.(UNSAFE)I DON'T THINK THIS ISSUE HAS RELEVANCE TO THE CURRENT RECALL FOR THIS MODEL, WHICH IS FLOORMAT RELATED. WHEN TRYING TO REGAIN CONTROL OF THE VEHICLE I CONSCIOUSLY TRIED TO SEE IF THE PEDAL WAS STUCK AND IT WAS NOT. ALSO THERE ARE NO REPORTED RECALLS FOR MY PARTICULAR VIN SO I'M REPORTING THIS NOW.I HAVE SINCE CONTACTED MASERATI AND HAVE A CURRENT REPAIR SCHEDULED. AT THIS TIME, I DON'T KNOW IF THEY WILL DO THIS REPAIR FREE OF CHARGE BUT WILL HAVE FOLLOW-UP DETAILS AVAILABLE IF NEED BE.

These pages show model-year patterns across 10 years. Enter a VIN to verify the exact vehicle's accident history, title brands, odometer records, and open recall status before purchase.

The basics

How to read this data

Complaints, recalls, investigations — here’s what each number actually tells you about a used Maserati Ghibli, in plain English.

01

What is an NHTSA Complaint?

An NHTSA safety complaint is a report filed directly by a vehicle owner or driver describing a safety-related issue. Anyone can submit a complaint at NHTSA.gov. The number of complaints is a signal of how common a problem is — but complaints per model-year matter more than raw totals, since popular vehicles naturally receive more reports. The Maserati Ghibli has 60 complaints on record across 10 model years.

02

What is a Safety Recall?

A safety recall is a mandatory campaign issued by NHTSA when a vehicle component poses an unreasonable risk to safety or does not comply with federal motor vehicle safety standards. Unlike complaints (which are owner-reported), recalls are formally investigated and confirmed by regulators. Manufacturers must fix recalled vehicles free of charge. The Maserati Ghibli has 26 recall campaigns in the NHTSA database.

03

What Are Crash Complaints?

Crash complaints are NHTSA filings where the owner indicates a crash occurred as part of the incident. 6 of the Maserati Ghibli's 60 complaints involved a crash. This metric is particularly important because it indicates how often defects resulted in actual collisions — a key safety signal beyond general reliability.

04

How Is the Reliability Verdict Calculated?

The reliability verdict (Average) is generated by analyzing the vehicle's total complaints, recall history, crash complaint ratio, fire complaint ratio, and top component failures relative to class averages. This verdict gives buyers a quick interpretation before they review year-level details and VIN-level history. It should be treated as one decision input, not a substitute for a VIN-specific report.

05

Why Do Newer Years Have Fewer Complaints?

Newer model years appear to have fewer complaints because there has been less time for owners to file them. Complaints accumulate over years of ownership. A 2020 model year vehicle will typically show fewer complaints than a 2015 model year even if it is less reliable — simply because fewer owners have had time to report issues. Focus on complaints per year of market presence when comparing across model years.

06

Fleet Data vs. Individual VIN

Everything on this page reflects aggregated data across all Maserati Ghibli vehicles on the road — not any specific car. Two Maserati Ghibli vehicles of the same year can have very different histories: one may have been in three accidents and have an open recall; another may be clean. A VIN check gives you the individual car's history: accidents, title brands, odometer records, service history, and real-time recall status.

07

What Are NHTSA Investigations?

When NHTSA receives a pattern of related safety complaints, it opens a formal investigation. A Preliminary Evaluation (PE) is the first stage — NHTSA determines if a safety defect may exist. If evidence is strong, it escalates to an Engineering Analysis (EA), which can result in a mandatory recall. The Maserati Ghibli has 0 investigations on record (0 active). Investigations listed above may have already led to the recalls shown on this page.
