โญ NHTSA NCAP Crash Test Ratings
New Car Assessment ProgramNCAP crash tests measure how well a vehicle protects occupants in controlled frontal crash, side crash, and rollover scenarios. Stars are awarded per category (5 = safest). These laboratory results are independent of owner complaints and are performed by NHTSA engineers on new production vehicles.
NCAP crash test ratings for this model are not yet loaded or this vehicle was not tested in the years analyzed. NHTSA tests a subset of new vehicles each year. Check nhtsa.gov/ratings directly for the latest results.

The contact owns a 2019 Maserati Ghibli. The contact stated while driving approximately 40 MPH, the vehicle drove over a dip in the roadway and the rear end swayed from left to right. The contact stated that at higher speeds the swaying made the vehicle more unstable. The contact stated no warning light was illuminated. The contact had taken the vehicle to a local dealer however, the failure could not be duplicated. The contact stated that he had the vehicle aligned and had all four tires replaced three times. The vehicle had not been repaired. The manufacturer had been informed of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 29,000. The contact stated that failure started very early on after purchase. The tires were worn out by 6,000 miles. The contact owns two other Ghiblis and neither one has these issues. The contact has paid out of pocket for multiple wheel alignments and tires. No remedy or reimbursement from the manufacturer and no cause of the issue from the dealer.
The contact's girlfriend owns a 2019 Maserati Ghibli. The contact stated that while driving at low speeds, the transmission would inadvertently shift into Neutral or Park, or the engine would shut off. Upon research, the contact related the failure to an engine software malfunction. The vehicle was taken to the dealer to be diagnosed however, the mechanic found no failure and informed the contact that the vehicle was operating as designed. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and informed the contact to record the failure whenever it happened again and forward the evidence of the failure. The failure mileage was 12,975.
The contact owns a 2017 Maserati Ghibli. The contact stated that while driving at various speeds, the rear end of the vehicle made an abnormal tinging sound. The contact related the failure to NHTSA Campaign Number: 16V856000(Power Train). The dealer was notified of the failure and informed the contact that the VIN was not included in the recall. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure, but no assistance was provided. The failure mileage mileage was approximately 37,600.
INTERMITTENT HARD BRAKE PEDAL INABILITY TO STOP THE CAR IN A SAFE MANNER. I HAD THE VACUUM BOOSTER PUMP REPLACED TWICE. ONCE THE REPAIR LASTED FOR A YEAR THEN THE LAST TIME THE INCIDENT REOCCURED AFTER THE SECOND REPAIR. THE FIRST TIME PRIOR TO REPAIR THERE WAS AN ACCIDENT TRAVELLING A 5 MPH AFTER THE FIRST REPAIR THERE WAS A HARD BRAKING INCIDENT THAT ALMOST CAUSED AN ACCIDENT AT AROUND 40 MPH. THEN HAD NEW BOOSTER PUMP REPAIRED. AFTER SECOND BOOSTER PUMP REPAIR THERE WAS ONOTHER HARD BRAKING PEDAL INCIDENT BUT WAS ABLE TO STOP THE VEHICLE WITH EXTREME DIFFICULTY. THE FIRST INCIDENT AT 5 MPH MY WIFE WAS DRIVING.
There is a recall for a rear differential issue and Maserati had previously repaired the differential. However, the problem has persisted and I have about 41k miles on the vehicle and already having the same issue. There is a whining noise in the rear along with a leaking rear differential. Both signs of the original problem. Maserati has stated that the repair has already been done but this raises a serious safety concern as it could result in the rear differential locking up and causing an accident.
I was on my way home from work sitting at the red light and when I was release my feet from the brake to take to driving, the auto start failed to start the car and I was stuck on side the road for 30 minutes because my vehicle wouldnโt not start. Finally the car started but I couldnโt get it to go over 15 mph. The car has been to the shop twice for service. Once was an electrical and the other time they couldnโt find nothing wrong with it. They said it just needed service. I serviced the vehicle as recommended and now it back doing the same thing again.
Sitting at at red light with the start/stop system on, as I release the break pedal on a green light, the gear automatically has shifted to park. The car shows no signs that it has turned off or warnings that it has shifted gears on its own. I have to manually change gear to drive to get the car to move. I am aware that the recall was done for this issue but there has been no successful resolution to the problem. The car was taken to Rusnak Pasadena on July 21, 2021 and since they could not duplicate the concern, there was nothing done. The car was then taken to Maserati of Puente Hills as the issue continued. As per the dealership, on their maserati system, it shows that my car did not qualify for their recall and it would not be considered to be a manufacturing issue. This is a major safety concern as it can cause an accident
The vehicle was manufactured with laminated glass for all windows and the glass is delaminating and forming bubbles around glass edges which compromises the integrity of the glass. On my vehicle, it affects all 4 windows and both front and rear windshields. This issue is widely reported on forums and group message boards and seems to affect all years of the Maserati Ghibli from 2014+. I have inquired with a local independent shop and was told that this is a safety concern and to try to reach out to the dealership. Reaching out to the dealership, I have not received a response. Others have said they had mixed results with the dealerships replacing their glass even with warranty. Others out of warranty were denied replacement or were told it is normal and not to worry.
Stopped at stop sign and slowly tried to accelerate. The car moved forward into oncoming traffic and almost stalled. To compensate I had to press accelerator hard and then engine finally woke back up. This has happened another time where the car stalled and shifted into neutral. This is a safety issue so now I accelerate aggressively so the car does not stall. There was a recall performed prior to my ownership that was report to have been performed but it seems it didn't resolve the issue completely.
I WAS DRIVING AT ABOUT 60 MPH AND HAD TO BREAK BECAUSE A VEHICLE PULLED IN FRONT OF ME. MY VEHICLE SLOWED VERY WELL BUT WHEN I EASED UP OFF THE BREAK THE VEHICLE JUST ACCELERATED ON ITS OWN AT A VERY HIGH RATE OF SPEED. I ALMOST COLLIDED WITH THE CAR IN FRONT OF ME. I BRAKED AGAIN AND THE VEHICLE SLOWED BUT WHEN I EASED UP OFF THE BRAKE THE CAR AGAIN ACCELERATED AT A HIGH RATE OF SPEED. IT DID THIS FOR ABOUT FOUR TIMES UNTIL I HAD TO PULL OVER OFF THE ROAD AND PUT THE CAR IN PARK AND WAITED FOR A WHILE BEFORE I WAS ABLE TO CONTROL THE CAR AND DRIVE HOME. I WAS DRIVING ON FM 1960/CYPRESS CREEK PARKWAY.
I PURCHASED THIS VEHICLE FROM NORTHSIDE IMPORTS IN HOUSTON ON THE NIGHT OF FEBRUARY 1ST. ON FEBRUARY 5TH I DROVE IT TO WORK AND NOTICED THAT ON THE ROUGH ROADS THE STEERING WHEEL VIBRATES/SHAKES TERRIBLY TO POINT WHERE IT HURTLED MY HAND. I CALLED AND NOTIFIED THE SALES PERSON ABOUT IT AND HE TOLD ME TO BRING THE VEHICLE IN. I DROPPED THE CAR OFF AT THE DEALERSHIP FOR THEM TO FIX THE PROBLEM. A FEW DAYS LATER I GOT A CALL FROM THE DEALERSHIP SAYING THE WHEEL WAS BENT AND THAT I MUST HAVE HIT A POTHOLE AND I AM GOING TO HAVE TO PAY TO GET THE CAR WHEEL FIXED BECAUSE WHEN THEY SOLD ME THE VEHICLE IT WAS NOT LIKE THAT AND THAT I MUST DAMAGED THE VEHICLE. I GOT FURIOUS. THEY SOLD ME THE VEHICLE EXACTLY LIKE THAT AND NOW DID NOT WANT TO FIX THE PROBLEM. I HAVE PICTURES SHOWING HOW THEY DELIVERED THE VEHICLE TO ME THAT NIGHT. FINALLY THEY DECIDED TO FIX THE PROBLEM BUT INSTEAD OF REPLACING THE BENT WHEEL THEY SENT IT OUT AND HAD IT REPAIRED FOR $125.00. I THINK THIS IS UNACCEPTABLE. I JUST SPENT OVER $49,000 TO PURCHASE A CERTIFIED PREOWNED MASERATI AND THIS IS WHAT THIS DEALERSHIP WAS DOING. NOW THE PROBLEM IS STILL NOT FIXED. THE STEERING WHEEL STILL VIBRATES/SHAKES ON ROUGH ROADS.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2017 MASERATI GHIBLI. WHILE DRIVING SLOW SPEEDS, THE TRANSMISSION SHIFTED INTO NEUTRAL AND THE VEHICLE STALLED WITHOUT WARNING. THE CONTACT WAS ABLE TO RESTART THE VEHICLE AND DROVE TO PARK PLACE MASERATI (2425 W NW HWY, DALLAS, TX 75220, (866) 249-2885). THE DEALER TEST DROVE THE VEHICLE, BUT COULD NOT REPLICATE THE FAILURE. THERE WERE NO FAILURE CODES FOUND. THE CONTACT WAS INFORMED THAT A SOFTWARE UPDATE WAS COMPLETED EARLIER IN THE YEAR. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE VIN WAS NOT INCLUDED IN NHTSA CAMPAIGN NUMBER: 18V173000 (ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING), ALTHOUGH THE FAILURES WERE SIMILAR. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE AND PROVIDED CASE NUMBER: 176272. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 30,000.
INITIAL CONDITIONS: SITTING AT A STOP LIGHT, WITH ALL DOORS CLOSED AND OCCUPANTS USING SEAT BELTS PROPERLY, ENGINE RUNNING, TRANSMISSION IN DRIVE. ISSUE TRIGGER: PRESSING THE GAS PEDAL TO ACCELERATE FROM THE STOP. ISSUE OBSERVED: ENGINE STALLS AND TRANSMISSION SHIFTS INTO NEUTRAL. ISSUE FREQUENCY: ISSUE OBSERVED 4 TIMES IN A 3 HOUR PERIOD.
ON JULY 2017 I WENT TO THE DEALERSHIP AT 3500 WESTON ROAD, DAVIE, FL 33331 TO LEASE A NEW CAR, SIGNED PAPERS,PAID MONEY, WHILE I WAS BUSY WITH PAPERS, THEY MOVED THE CAR TO THE ENTRANCE OF THE DEALERSHIP. HAVE TO SQUEEZE FEET UNDER IT TO PUSH IT UP BACK.(DRIVING) MANUFACTURE REFUSED TO EXCHANGE THE CAR,THEY LET ME KNOW THAT AFTER I TOOK THE CAR FROM DEALERSHIP THIS CAR BECAME MY PROBLEM NOT THEIRS ANY MORE & I HAVE TO KEEP THAT RECALLED, MANUFACTURE DEFECTIVE CAR UNTIL I GUESS WE FINALLY DIE IN IT.IT IS A LIFE DANGEROUS CAR AND I DO NOT WANT TO PUT MY FAMILY LIVES IN THE RISK.MANUFACTURE CANNOT PLAY WITH PEOPLE LIVES.DEALERSHIP WHERE I LEASED THE CAR TOWED IT AWAY FROM MY HOUSE ON SEPT16,2019(HOOD SMOKE).MANUFACTURE TELLS ME THEY DON'T WANT TO EXCHANGE IT, IT IS MINE NO MATTER WHAT TILL LEASE ENDS.
THE OIL PRESSURE LIGHT CAME ON THE DISPLAY. THE OIL LEVEL WAS TOPPED OFF AND THE OIL LIGHT WENT OFF. THE VEHICLE LIGHT CAME BACK ON AND THE VEHICLE WAS IMMEDIATELY PULLED OVER. THE OIL PRESSURE DISPLAY WAS READING ABOUT 25%, THE VEHICLE WAS STARTED AND STARTED TO SHAKE MAKE A LOAD NOISE FROM THE ENGINE. THE VEHICLE WAS TURNED OFF AND WE NOTIFIED MASERATI EMERGENCY ROADSIDE ASSISTANCE THAT WE NEEDED THE VEHICLE TOWED TO THE DEALERSHIP. WE WERE NOTIFIED THAT THE DEALERSHIP HAD CANCELLED ALL THE VEHICLE ERROR CODES BECAUSE THERE WERE TOO MANY. WE WERE THEN TOLD THAT THE VEHICLE WOULD BE GETTING AN OIL CHANGE AND AN EXTENSIVE ROAD TEST. THE NEXT DAY WE WERE TOLD THE VEHICLE NEEDED A NEW ENGINE BUT WE HAD TO FURNISH PROOF OF AN OIL CHANGE. WE HAD THE OIL CHANGED 6 MONTHS PRIOR BUT THE REPAIR SHOP HAD NEW OWNERSHIP AND THEY DID NOT HAVE THE PRIOR REPAIR RECORDS. WHEN WE INFORMED BOARDWALK FERRARI MASERATI THAT WE DID NOT HAVE THE RECEIPT WE WERE TOLD THAT MASERATI WAS NOT GOING TO HONOR THE VEHICLE WARRANTY. THE VEHICLE IS STILL AT THE DEALERSHIP01
I HAVE COMPLAINING TO THE DEALER SINCE I BOUGHT THE CAR ABOUT NOISE ON THE STEERING WHEEL AND TRANSMISSION. THE CAR SINCE PURCHASED ON 2016 HAS BEEN OUT FOR SERVICE 62 DAYS. I REPORTED SEVERAL TIMES A LOUD KLUNK NOISE ON THE STEERING AND ON THE , TOOK IT TO REPAIR. TOOK THE CAR TO HAVE IT FIX SEVERAL TIMES AND THE CAR CONTINUED WITH THE PROBLEM. LAST TIME AFTER TAKING THE CAR FROM SERVICE THE CAR STARTED PULLING TO THE SIDES. THE CAR WAS ALIGNED, BALANCE AND NEW WHEELS WERE PLACE THIS YEAR. AFTER SEVERAL ATTEMPTS THIS PAST MONTH OF JULY I SUBMITTED A LEMON LAW CLAIM. THE CLAIM HAS BEEN POORLY MISHANDLED. THE CAR A MONTH LATER INSPECTED AND AFTER INSPECTION THE CAR STARTED PULLING IN THE HIGHWAY. WE REPORTED THIS TO THE PERSON HANDLING THE CASE, AS WE WERE AFRAID IT CAN CAUSE AN ACCIDENT. FINALLY LAST MONDAY ON I-95 IN MIAMI THE VEHICLE HYDROPLANED HIT THE HIGHWAY DIVIDER AND CRASHED. THANKFULLY ALL VEHICLES BEHIND STOPPED AND NO ONE WAS HURT BUT MASERATI USA STILL HAS NOT TAKE MEASURES NOR LOOK UP TO THE CASE. THIS VEHICLE HAD PREVIOUS REPORTS OF RECALLS WITH PROBLEMS ON TRANSMISSION. TO MY CAR THE DEALER HAD TO REPLACE TWICE BOLTS, PARTS IN THE TRANSMISSION AND ON THE AXES.
AFTER 365 IGNITION FLASH RECALL, THE CAR STARTED TO FAIL TO ACCELERATE PROPERLY ON DEMAND WHILE IN MOTION ON A HIGHWAY. I FELT LIKE THE GEARS WERE SLIPPING, DID NOT ENGAGE THE PROPER GEAR ON ACCELERATION. CAUSING THE CAR TO LOOSE SPEED INSTEAD OF INCREASING SPEED. DEALERSHIP CONFIRMED WITH MASERATI CORPORATE THAT THE PROBLEM WAS ELECTRONIC AND WOULD HAVE TO BE CODED IN ITALY AT THE MANUFACTURING PLACE. DEALERSHIP ASKED MASERATI CORPORATION TO REPLACE THE CAR WITH NEW CAR SINCE THERE IS NO FIX TO THE PROBLEM AND IT WAS DEEMED A SAFETY HAZARD. MASERATI CORPORATION DECLINED TO ABIDE BY THE DECISION OF THE DEALERSHIP IN JACKSONVILLE. THE CAR REMAINED AT THE SERVICE SHOP BECAUSE THE CAR IS DEEMED UNSAFE TO DRIVE. CAR HAS BEEN AT THE SERVICE SHOP FOR ABOUT 4 MONTHS. DEALERSHIP DEMANDED TO RETURN THE LOANER CAR. CAR WILL BE CONSIDERED A LEMON ACCORDING TO THE FLORIDA LEMON LAW AS PER LAWYER. OTHER SIMILAR CARS MAY HAVE THE SAME PROBLEM.
I HAVE BROUGHT THE CAR IN TO FIX AN ISSUE WHERE THERE IS NO SOUND COMING OUT OF THE SPEAKERS EVEN THOUGH THE COMMAND CENTER HAS THE VISUAL OF EVERYTHING FROM THE GPS, TO THE PARKING SENSOR TO THE TELEPHONE. IT SEEMS TO HAPPEN MORE AFTER IT RAINS AND THE SERVICE DEPARTMENT INSINUATED THAT IT MIGHT BE CAUSE BY A DEFECTIVE WATER DRAIN DESIGN. WHEN I PUSHED HARDER THEY CHANGED THEIR STORY DENYING G THEY SAID THAT AND THEN TELLING ME THEY HAVE NO SOLUTION
I HAVE A RECALL LETTER DATED MAY 18, 2018 RECALL#18V-173 MY VEHICLE WHEN BEING OPERATED AT SPEEDS OF APPROXIMATELY 2 MILES PER HOUR (LOW ENGINE RPM), WHICH CAN BE ENCOUNTERED DURING HEAVY STOP-AND-GO (BUMPER-TO-BUMPER) TRAFFIC CONDITIONS, CAUSES THE ENGINE TO SHUT DOWN. THE DEALERSHIP IS UNABLE TO RESOLVE THE ISSUE AFTER FOUR(4) ATTEMPTS.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2017 MASERATI GHIBLI. WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 5 MPH, THERE WAS A SUDDEN LOSS OF POWER AND THE BRAKES FAILED TO ENGAGE WHEN THE BRAKE PEDAL WAS DEPRESSED. AS A RESULT, THE CONTACT CRASHED INTO THE REAR OF THE PRECEDING VEHICLE. A POLICE REPORT WAS FILED. THE CONTACT SUSTAINED UNKNOWN INJURIES THAT REQUIRED MEDICAL ATTENTION. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO A COLLISION CENTER. A DEALER WAS NOT CONTACTED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE AND STATED THAT A SPECIALIST WOULD BE ASSIGNED TO TAKE PHOTOS OF THE VEHICLE; HOWEVER, A SPECIALIST FAILED TO APPEAR. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 1,100.

๐ Understanding This Data
What is an NHTSA Complaint?
An NHTSA safety complaint is a report filed directly by a vehicle owner or driver describing a safety-related issue. Anyone can submit a complaint at NHTSA.gov. The number of complaints is a signal of how common a problem is โ but complaints per model-year matter more than raw totals, since popular vehicles naturally receive more reports. The Maserati Ghibli has 29 complaints on record across 10 model years.
What is a Safety Recall?
A safety recall is a mandatory campaign issued by NHTSA when a vehicle component poses an unreasonable risk to safety or does not comply with federal motor vehicle safety standards. Unlike complaints (which are owner-reported), recalls are formally investigated and confirmed by regulators. Manufacturers must fix recalled vehicles free of charge. The Maserati Ghibli has 16 recall campaigns in the NHTSA database.
What Are Crash Complaints?
Crash complaints are NHTSA filings where the owner indicates a crash occurred as part of the incident. 3 of the Maserati Ghibli's 29 complaints involved a crash. This metric is particularly important because it indicates how often defects resulted in actual collisions โ a key safety signal beyond general reliability.
How Is the Reliability Verdict Calculated?
The reliability verdict (Good) is generated by analyzing the vehicle's total complaints, recall history, crash complaint ratio, fire complaint ratio, and top component failures relative to class averages. This verdict gives buyers a quick interpretation before they review year-level details and VIN-level history. It should be treated as one decision input, not a substitute for a VIN-specific report.
Why Do Newer Years Have Fewer Complaints?
Newer model years appear to have fewer complaints because there has been less time for owners to file them. Complaints accumulate over years of ownership. A 2020 model year vehicle will typically show fewer complaints than a 2015 model year even if it is less reliable โ simply because fewer owners have had time to report issues. Focus on complaints per year of market presence when comparing across model years.
Fleet Data vs. Individual VIN
Everything on this page reflects aggregated data across all Maserati Ghibli vehicles on the road โ not any specific car. Two Maserati Ghibli vehicles of the same year can have very different histories: one may have been in three accidents and have an open recall; another may be clean. A VIN check gives you the individual car's history: accidents, title brands, odometer records, service history, and real-time recall status.
What Are NHTSA Investigations?
When NHTSA receives a pattern of related safety complaints, it opens a formal investigation. A Preliminary Evaluation (PE) is the first stage โ NHTSA determines if a safety defect may exist. If evidence is strong, it escalates to an Engineering Analysis (EA), which can result in a mandatory recall. The Maserati Ghibli has 0 investigations on record (0 active). Investigations listed above may have already led to the recalls shown on this page.
