My 2014 Land Rover LR2 HSE STARTED SMELLING STRONGLY OF FUEL IN LATE APRIL,2022. I contacted LAND ROVER NORTH AMERICA CUSTOMER RELATIONS ON 5/2/22 about the problem. Cris Willis opened Case# 8000998446 to assist me. He stated it was a recall issue awaiting parts to become active. Then on 6/15 Cris W. contacted me again requesting I make appt. with my local LR dealer and now they could inspect car and replace any defective parts. On 6/21 I messaged Cris that I had made appt. For 6/23. Cris messaged me back that Ft. Myers LR dealer would resolve issue with no problem at all. When I brought my car into service manager. He had my car inspected and found fuel sending unit cover was leaking and needed to be replaced. Cost for fuel sending unit cover and gasket with labor and taxes, etc. would be $1970.09. He said my car had left two fuel puddles in service area and was a dangerous safety issue but my VIN # was not in recall and repairs would be at my expense.I declined repair and immediately called LR North America customer relations speaking with Cris W. and his supervisor, Jennifer. Both told me they would try to work with managers at Ft. Myers and Naples LR dealers to encourage them to help me by covering all or part of the repair cost. I never heard back from them or anyone at LR Customer Relations. My daughter did file a complaint with NHTSA on 6/23 for my car but I would like to file my own complaint because of the serious safety issue which LR fails to address in any substantive or helpful way. I have taken my car to a third party auto service facility because I was told it was too dangerous to drive by by LR Customer Relations and their Ft. Myers LR service manager. Please accept this complaint so that some wonβt be injured or killed by this serious safety issue which is similar / related to NHTSA Recall#N623. Thank you for assisting in protecting other LR owners, especially those of older models who may be jeopardy because of these defective parts.
The contact's parents own a 2014 Land Rover LR2. The contact stated upon parking the vehicle in the garage, her parents and herself noticed an abnormally strong gasoline odor inside the garage. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where it was diagnosed that the fuel outlet flange needed to be replaced. The dealer informed the contact that the vehicle could not repair NHTSA Campaign Number: 21V635000 (Fuel System, Gasoline) as the VIN was not included. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and informed the contact that they could not assist as the VIN was not included in the recall. The failure mileage was approximately 55,000.
Transfer case failure due to seals leaking, resulting in oil leak and rendering the vehicle inoperable. Repairs estimated at $2,261-$7,500 by authorized Range Rover service center in Grand Rapids, MI.

TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2014 LAND ROVER LR2. WHILE DRIVING 40 MPH, THE BRAKE AND ACCELERATOR PEDALS BECAME DIFFICULT TO DEPRESS. THE CONTACT PULLED THE VEHICLE OVER TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC AND IT WAS DIAGNOSED THAT THE VACUUM PUMP MALFUNCTIONED AND NEEDED REPLACEMENT. THE DEALER (LAND ROVER SOUTHWEST HOUSTON, 10150 SOUTHWEST FWY, HOUSTON, TX 77074, (844) 894-5469) WAS CONTACTED. THE CONTACT PLANNED ON TOWING THE VEHICLE TO THE DEALER FOR DIAGNOSTIC TESTING AND REPAIRS. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 51,000.
VEHICLE WAS MOVING FORWARD AND T-BONED ON THE SIDE BY A SMALLER VEHICLE. VEHICLE ROLLED OVER ON TO ITS ROOF. SIDE CURTAIN AIRBAGS DEPLOYED BUT THE DRIVER SIDE FRONT AIRBAG DID NOT DEPLOY.
WHEN DRIVING FEELS LIKE THE CAR GET IN TO NEUTRAL SUDDENLY THE REVOLUTIONS GET ALL THE WAY UP AND THE CAR DOES NOT ADVACE, DOES NOT RUN NORMAL UNTIL I DO MANUALLY CHANGE GEARS. MY SETTINGS ARE TO JUST DO MANUALLY WHEN THE CAR IS IN " S". THE CHECK ENGINE TURN ON. THIS STARTED LAST WEEK 03/05/2025 WHEN INSPECTED THE FAILURE SHOWS AS ERROR AS TURBO P0299
Cracking Fuel Pump leaking fuel down the fuel tank causing a large puddle under the vehicle and strong gasoline smell inside and outside the vehicle. Similar leaking fuel recall to NHTSA campaign number: 21V635 Leaking fuel could cause a fire. Has been confirmed by a service center. Has not been inspected by manufacturer, reference NHTSA campaign number 21V635. No warning lamps, just started leaking within the last month.
the rear differential failure on the LR2 car is only 74,000 miles and the differential need to be replaced, I was reading online about it and several persons complain about. Thank you.
RECENTLY BEGAN HEARING A NOISE FROM THE REAR WHEN DRIVING. THOUGHT IT MIGHT BE FROM THE REAR ALIGNMENT CAUSING THE TIRE TREAD TO MAKE THIS SOUND. DRIVING FASTER THE NOISE WOULD GET LOUDER. TOOK TO MY MECHANIC FOR ALIGNMENT AND THEY SAID IT WAS THE REAR DIFFERENTIAL GOING OUT. THE BEARINGS WERE MAKING THE LOUD NOISE. THE VEHICLE ONLY HAS 70,400 MILES AND IS DRIVEN 10 MILES A DAY AND NEVER OFF ROAD. LOOKED FOR ANY RECALL NOTICE I MAY HAVE MISSED AND THEN DISCOVERED THIS SAME SITUATION FROM SEVERAL OTHERS. I ENTERED MY VIN TO CHECK FOR ANY RECALLS AND THERE ARE NONE! SURELY THIS VEHICLE WAS BUILT TO BETTER SPECS. FOR THIS TO FAIL SO EARLY IN THE LIFE (MILEAGE) OF THE VEHICLE IS UNACCEPTABLE AND NEEDS TO BE REPAIRED BY THE MANUFACTURER AT N/C. I'M CERTAIN THERE ARE MANY MORE THAN THOSE OF US WHO HAVE FILED HERE; HOWEVER, THERE ARE ENOUGH ON THIS SITE TO TAKE THE ISSUE SERIOUS AND ADDRESS THE MATTER WITH THE MANUFACTURER. THIS NEEDS TO BE RECOGNIZED FOR WHAT IS - A MANUFACTURING DEFECT AND NEEDS TO BE FIXED BY LAND ROVER!
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2011 LAND ROVER LR2. WHILE DRIVING 55 MPH, A LOUD HUMMING NOISE WAS COMING FROM THE REAR OF THE VEHICLE. THE FASTER THE VEHICLE ACCELERATED, THE LOUDER THE NOISE BECAME. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC WHO DIAGNOSED THAT THE REAR DIFFERENTIAL FAILED AND NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED AND WAS NOT TAKEN TO A DEALER. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 83,000.
THE REAR DIFFERENTIAL HAS BEEN DIAGNOSED WITH A PINION BEARING FAILURE BY LAND ROVER. THE VEHICLE ONLY HAS 59,000 MILES AND HAS NEVER SEEN ANYTHING OFF ROAD
REAR DIFFERENTIAL HAD TO BE REPLACED IN LESS THAN 70K
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2011 LAND ROVER LR2. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE ENGINE MADE STRANGE NOISES WHEN THE VEHICLE WAS STARTED AND WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 30 MPH. IN ADDITION, THE ENGINE CONTINUED TO RUN WHEN THE CONTACT ATTEMPTED TO TURN OFF THE IGNITION. THE CONTACT CALLED LAND ROVER PEABODY (247 NEWBURY ST, PEABODY, MA 01960, (978) 535-9200) AND WAS INFORMED THAT THERE WAS NO RECALL. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT DIAGNOSED OR REPAIRED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 130,000.
NOTICED A LOUD NOISE FROM REAR OF VEHICLE WHILE DRIVING. THE GREATER THE SPEED THE LOUDER THE NOISE. DEALER INSPECTION CONFIRMED REAR DIFFERENTIAL FAILING AND NEEDS REPLACEMENT. VEHICLE HAS 38,000 MILES AND STILL HAS THE ORIGINAL FACTORY TIRES. REAR DIFFERENTIAL FAILING BEFORE ORIGINAL TIRES ARE WORE OUT! POTENTIAL TOTAL FAILURE OF REAR DIFFERENTIAL DURING OPERATION A REAL SAFETY CONCERN.
THE REAR DIFFERENTIAL NEEDS REPLACED AT ONLY 71K MILES - DEALERSHIP HAS QUOTED A COST OF $6,000.00. THIS IS APPARENTLY A VERY COMMON PROBLEM FOR THE LR2 AND LAND ROVER HAS ISSUED A TSB BUT WILL NOT PERFORM A RECALL AND FIX THIS KNOWN ISSUE AND FACTORY DEFECT.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNED A 2011 LAND ROVER LR2. WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 35 MPH, ANOTHER VEHICLE CRASHED INTO THE FRONT OF THE CONTACT'S VEHICLE. AS A RESULT, THE AIR BAG DEPLOYED, BUT DID NOT INFLATE. THE CONTACT AND THE FRONT PASSENGER HIT THE WINDSHIELD AND SUSTAINED INJURIES THAT REQUIRED MEDICAL ATTENTION. A POLICE REPORT WAS FILED. THE VEHICLE WAS DESTROYED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 48,000. UPDATE 01/15/16 MA UPDATED 03/22/18 *JB
I HAD JUST DRIVEN 3 HOURS TO CHICAGO FROM GALESBURG, I WAS PREPARED TO ENTER 90/94 AT STONEY ISLAND , BUT I DECIDED TO STOP OFF BECAUSE MY CELL PHONE WAS NOT CHARGING MY CIGARETTE LIGHTER WAS NOT WORKING. I KNOW ENOUGH ABOUT CARS TO CHANGE A LITTLE FUSE. I POPPED MY HOOD TO CHECK OUT THE FUSES, TO REPLACE IT. I PULLED THE FUSE FOR THE LIGHTER IT WAS NOT BLOWN, I PUT IT BACK. I DECIDED TIME IS GETTING LATE, FORGET IT, I WILL BUY AND EXTERNAL CHARGER IN INDIANA. WHEN I REPLACED THE FUSE COVER AND CLOSED THE HOOD. THE CAR WOULD NOT START, THE BCS WARNING CAME UP, AND THE HAZARDS BEGAN FLASHING, AND CRASH WARNING LIGHT CAME UP. I COULD NOT PUSH BRAKES, TURN STEERING WHEEL, TURN OFF LIGHTS, REMOVE KEY, PUT IN NEUTRAL, LOCK CAR OR START THE CAR. I HAD TO GET TOWED TO THE LR DEALERSHIP IN CHICAGO WHERE MY VEHICLE REMAINS. I AM SUBMITTING THIS BECAUSE LR SAID THAT THIS IS A RARE OCCURRENCE AND THEY HAVE DONE VERY LITTLE OF PROVIDING ANSWERS. I WAS PREPARED TO DRIVE3 THRU THE ALLEGHENY'S, WHAT IF THIS WOULD HAVE HAPPENED AS I WAS TRAVELING BACK TO DC? WHO ELSE COULD HAVE BEEN HARMED BY MY SYSTEM SEIZING UP? I LITERALLY WOULD HAVE LOST CONTROL OF MY VEHICLE. ESPECIALLY WITH 36K MILES AND STILL UNDER WARRANTY. *TR

The basics
How to read this data
Complaints, recalls, investigations β hereβs what each number actually tells you about a used LAND Rover LR2, in plain English.
What is an NHTSA Complaint?
An NHTSA safety complaint is a report filed directly by a vehicle owner or driver describing a safety-related issue. Anyone can submit a complaint at NHTSA.gov. The number of complaints is a signal of how common a problem is β but complaints per model-year matter more than raw totals, since popular vehicles naturally receive more reports. The LAND Rover LR2 has 181 complaints on record across 8 model years.
What is a Safety Recall?
A safety recall is a mandatory campaign issued by NHTSA when a vehicle component poses an unreasonable risk to safety or does not comply with federal motor vehicle safety standards. Unlike complaints (which are owner-reported), recalls are formally investigated and confirmed by regulators. Manufacturers must fix recalled vehicles free of charge. The LAND Rover LR2 has 10 recall campaigns in the NHTSA database.
What Are Crash Complaints?
Crash complaints are NHTSA filings where the owner indicates a crash occurred as part of the incident. 3 of the LAND Rover LR2's 181 complaints involved a crash. This metric is particularly important because it indicates how often defects resulted in actual collisions β a key safety signal beyond general reliability.
How Is the Reliability Verdict Calculated?
The reliability verdict (Poor) is generated by analyzing the vehicle's total complaints, recall history, crash complaint ratio, fire complaint ratio, and top component failures relative to class averages. This verdict gives buyers a quick interpretation before they review year-level details and VIN-level history. It should be treated as one decision input, not a substitute for a VIN-specific report.
Why Do Newer Years Have Fewer Complaints?
Newer model years appear to have fewer complaints because there has been less time for owners to file them. Complaints accumulate over years of ownership. A 2020 model year vehicle will typically show fewer complaints than a 2015 model year even if it is less reliable β simply because fewer owners have had time to report issues. Focus on complaints per year of market presence when comparing across model years.
Fleet Data vs. Individual VIN
Everything on this page reflects aggregated data across all LAND Rover LR2 vehicles on the road β not any specific car. Two LAND Rover LR2 vehicles of the same year can have very different histories: one may have been in three accidents and have an open recall; another may be clean. A VIN check gives you the individual car's history: accidents, title brands, odometer records, service history, and real-time recall status.
What Are NHTSA Investigations?
When NHTSA receives a pattern of related safety complaints, it opens a formal investigation. A Preliminary Evaluation (PE) is the first stage β NHTSA determines if a safety defect may exist. If evidence is strong, it escalates to an Engineering Analysis (EA), which can result in a mandatory recall. The LAND Rover LR2 has 0 investigations on record (0 active). Investigations listed above may have already led to the recalls shown on this page.
