In 2019, GM released service bulletin 18-NA-358 that confirms the company's knowledge of of defective parts in transmissions. I have a 2017 Cadillac XTS experiencing these symptoms and GM should be responsible for parts failing due to metal shavings. This needs to be a recall. The transmissions are not getting gas, shuddering, and stalling when accelerating. This shuddering has almost caused me to be in many accidents. The vehicle owner should not be responsible for replacing expensive parts and entire transmissions due to metal shavings stalling transmissions.
The contact owns a 2017 Cadillac XTS. The contact stated while driving at an undisclosed speed, the accelerator pedal was depressed; however, the vehicle failed to accelerate as intended. The contact stated that the accelerator pedal became stuck, and the vehicle accelerated excessively. The contact stated that the failure had occurred several times. The contact stated that the failure occurred once while the contact was driving in a shopping store parking lot and the vehicle crashed into five staged shopping carts. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired by an independent mechanic or the dealer. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and a case was filed. The vehicle was inspected by an inspector sent by the manufacturer; however, the failure could not be duplicated. The failure mileage was approximately 125,000. The VIN was unavailable.
Numerous problems for a year have been: engine dies while driving, car totally dead with new battery, display partially black randomly or totally black along with radio display black, park assist is turned off. Headlights turn off and on by themselves; The latest is driving up a hill @ 25 mph, the steering wheel jerked hard to the right at 2 different times. Had I not had a solid grip on the wheel, it would have taken down a 500 foot drop and we wouldn't be here today. This last episode is the first time their OBD was able to read anything. It read "no communication to steering, no communication to brakes, radio, dash display" and other no communications. This car is unsafe to drive and should be recalled or taken off the road. It has been to 2 dealerships and so far have not identified anything that gives me faith in the reliability in the vehicle.
Rear suspension not holding air. Rear suspension went flat while driving in highway. Had to pull over due to sudden rough ride
THE MAJOR COMPONENT OF THIS CAR IS THE CUE SCREEN. THE CUE SCREEN IS CONNECTED TO THE ABILITY TO DEFROST AND COOLING/HEATING SYSTEM IN THE VEHICLE. CURRENTLY, THE CUE SCREEN IS FROZEN AND THE OPERATIONS OF VARIES SYSTEMS ARE AT A HALT. THIS IS A SAFETY ISSUES. CURRENTLY DUE TO LEATHER SEATS UNABLE TO COOL IN EXTREME HEAT AND HAVE HAD SOME MINOR BURNS ALSO, THE COOLING SYSYEM IS NOT WORKING DUE TO THE FREEZING OF THE CUE SCREEN, THERE ARE MANY COMPLAINTS OF THIS MATTER SINCE 2013. THERE SHOULD BE A RECALL ON THIS ISSUE FOR SAFETY.
With no warning and only 45000 miles on car rear air suspension motor failed on expressway! I quickly noticed my steering anti red seemed out of control! I quickly pulled over not knowing what was wrong. My husband came to meet me and immediately asked what was in my trunk! I told him nothing he said my back tires were 1/4 inch from hitting wheel well. The rear end was so low if I did not pull over and hit a bump or rock my tire would of hit top of body of car! I would of lost control of car! Thank god I pulled over when I did it could of killed me or someone else in road! I contacted GM within hrs of it happening! As I looked it up on line it said some of my make and model were recalled and safety admin was looking into it! Went back and forth with Gm and dealer and 2 1/2 weeks later still pursuing GM! There is now a claim in for full reimbursement and still have not heard back! My car was out of warranty but this is a huge safety issue! I could of been killed in that car! It will kill someoneβs if they do not address this! Lots of calls on my end where it seemed like they were concerned and eager to help! Turned out to be lots of waiting for non returned calls and them not doing anything at this point! Last call was Friday last week when they put in for full reimbursement and a promise to call me by Tuesday! No call so I called today where again I was promised to hear back by end of today! I will attach service receipt! The rear end was so low that tow truck damaged bottom of my bumper! Somebody again is going to be injured or killed from this! Hopefully they donβt deny my reimbursement from this complaint and dealer west Herr Chevy of Rochester wanted nothing to do with any help GM was going to do not sure if that is why I was getting run around from GM! LAST YEAR, WE BOUGHT OUR CAR FROM A DEALERSHIP USED. WE NOTICED THE CADILLAC CUE WAS VERY GLITCHY. WE TOOK IT INTO THE DEALERSHIP AND THEY CALIBRATED THE SYSTEM. WE WERE ON A TRIP USING THE GPS AND IT GLITCHED SEVERAL TIMES. HAD TO PULL OVER AND SET UP OUR PHONES. NOTHING WORKS IN THE CADILLAC CUE WHEN THIS HAPPENS. CLIMATE CONTROL, GPS, APPS, WIFI, AND MUSIC. TOOK IT BACK, TOLD IT WAS NO LONGER UNDER WARRANTY AND GM WAS AWARE OF ALL THE ISSUES YET REFUSE TO DO A RECALL. DEALERSHIP SAID EVENTUALLY IT WOULD SHATTER. WELL, YESTERDAY, WE GOT IN OUR CAR AND NOTICED IT HAD IN FACT SHATTERED. TOP RIGHT CORNER AND BOTTOM LEFT CORNER. THIS IS A HUGE HAZARD AS IT WOULD CUT SOMEONE. THE SYSTEM GLITCHES WHETHER THE CAR IS MOVING OR SETTING STILL IN PARK. CALLED GM TODAY AND THEY BASICALLY SAID IT WAS ON US.
2017 XTS, REAR SUSPENSION AIR BAGS FAIL WHILE DRIVING, STOPED AND EVEN PARKED. WHILE DRIVING AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS OR JUST PARKED REAR END WILL DROP UNEXPECTEDLY. THE REAR END WILL START TO BOUNCE WITH JUST THE SLIGHTEST UNEVEN ROAD. THIS CAUSE THE DRIVER TO HAVE TO FIGHT TO STAY IN CONTROL OF CAR AND SLOW DOWN VERY FAST. WITH TRAFFIC BEHIND IT CAN CAUSE SOMEONE TO HIT YOU FROM REAR. CAR HAS BEEN TO DEALER SEVERAL TIMES AND CADILLAC SAY EVERYTHING IS NORMAL. HOWEVER AFTER LEAVING DEALER IT CONTINUES TO HAPPEN. CADILLAC HAS KNOW ABOUT THIS FOR MANY YEARS AND IGNORES THE PROBLEM ON THE XTS. THE REAR END WILL DROP TO A LEVEL THE YOU CAN NOT EVEN TOUCH THE TOP OF THE TIRE OR EVEN THE MIDDLE. ALMOST TOUCHING THE GROUND AT REAR. FIRST TIME WAS APRIL 2019 RIGHT AFTER WARRANTY WAS OUT. THE SAID I NEEDED SHOCKS 1500.00 DID NOT DO ANYTHING BUT DRAIN MY WALLET. CADILLAC NEEDS TO OWN UP TO THE PROBLEM AND FIX IT.
THE CUE SCREEN LOCKS UP AND BECOMES INOPERABLE SEVERAL TIMES A DAY. IT CAUSES THE HEAT OR A/C TO NOT WORK PROPERLY AND I AM UNABLE TO USE ANY FUNCTION. THE FAILURE PREVENTS ME FROM PROPERLY HEATING OR COOLING THE VEHICLE, USE THE NAV FUNCTION, AND THE SCREEN WILL AUTOMATICALLY REPROGRAM MY SETTINGS, MAKE BEEPING NOISES, AND BECOME A SIGNIFICANT DISTRACTION WHILE DRIVING. SAFETY RELATED ISSUE.
WHILE I'M DRIVING EVEN LIKE 50 MILE HIT THE BREAK FOR A REASON CAR COMPLETELY STALLED NO POWER FOR BREAK OR STEERING OR ANYTHING YOU CANNOT MOVE THE CAR ANYPLACE I ALMOST HIT THE PERSON IN FRONT OF ME AND I ALMOST GOT HIT IN THE BACK IT HAS BEEN THE END OF LAST YEAR AND IT KEEPS HAPPENING. RECENTLY I TOOK IT TO THE TAILOR FIVE TIMES HE HAD NO IDEA WHAT IS THAT.
ON 4 SEPARATE OCCASIONS OVER THE LAST FEW MONTHS THE POWER STEERING HAS QUIT WORKING WHILE DRIVING. HAS HAPPENED WHILE TURNING AND WHILE DRIVING STRAIGHT. HAS HAPPENED WHILE ACCELERATING AND WHILE DRIVING CONSTANT SPEED. AFTER STOPPING, TURNING ENGINE OFF AND THEN RESTARTING THE PROBLEM GOES AWAY. I DO GET A MESSAGE THAT POWER STEERING IS OUT ON THE DASH BUT IT IS VERY EVIDENT WHEN IT GOES OUT. INTERNET SEARCH SAYS THIS IS A PROBLEM ON OTHER MODELS AND RECALL ISSUED. DEALER SAYS NO SUCH RECALL ON MY VEHICLE.
PROBLEM #1 - TRUNK OPENS BY ITSELF (SOMETIMES WHILE VEHICLE IS STATIONARY & LOCKED (I.E., PARKED FOR THE NIGHT - ENGINE OFF); OTHER TIMES THE TRUNK OPENS BY ITSELF WHILE I AM DRIVING/MOVING (ENGINE OBVIOUSLY ON); OTHER TIMES WHILE THE ENGINE IS ON AND THE VEHICLE IS STATIONARY (I.E., VEHICLE IS AT IDLE). I KNOW FOR A FACT THAT THESE EPISODES OCCURRED WITHOUT ME PRESSING THE TRUNK BUTTON - WHETHER IT BE THE INSIDE/DOOR TRUNK BUTTON; KEY FOB TRUNK VUTTON; OR THE TRUNK RELEASE ON THE TRUNK ITSELF. IT IS A SAFETY HAZARD TO HAVE THE TRUNK SUDDENLY OPEN WHILE DRIVING AT 70 MPH OR WHILE DRIVING AT 35 MPH (CAN HAPPEN AT ANY SPEED, INCLUDING 0 [ZERO]). IT IS A SECURITY MATTER AS WHEN PARKED AND THE TRUNK OPENS BY ITSELF, IT LEAVES ME VULNERABLE TO THEFT OF MY PROPERTY. PROBLEM #2 - DRIVER DOOR LOCK. THE DRIVER'S DOOR MYSTERIOUSLY UNLOCKS AT TIMES (ONLY THE DRIVER'S DOOR UNLOCKS -- THE OTHER 3 DOORS REMAIN LOCKED) - . SO FAR, THIS ONLY OCCURS WHILE THE ENGINE IS OFF AND THE VEHICLE IS STATIONARY AND PARKED. I HAVE NOTICED BY NOW THAT ON OVER 10 OCCASIONS, MY DRIVERS DOOR (ONLY) IS ALREADY UNLOCKED WHEN I APPROACHED THE VEHICLE. THE "PASSIVE LOCK" FEATURE IS ON, SO THE CAR AUTOMATICALLY LOCKS ITSELF AS I WALK AWAY FROM IT (AND I ALWAYS LISTEN FOR HORN CHIRP WHILE WALKING AWAY INDICATING THAT THE CAR HAS LOCKED ITSELF). OTHER TIMES, I DOUBLE-CHECK THE LOCKING BY EITHER USING THE KEY FOB OR DEPRESS THE INSIDE POWER LOCK POWER DOOR LOCK SWITCH OR PRESS THE UNLOCK/LOCK SMALL BUTTON ON THE EXTERIOR DRIVER DOOR HANDLE. WHEN I FIND THE DRIVER'S DOOR UNLOCKED, IT IS IMPOSSIBLE FOR ME TO MANUALLY RE-LOCK THE CAR. IF I PRESS THE INTERIOR POWER DOOR LOCK BUTTON, ALL 4 DOOR LOCKS LOCK MOMENTARILY, THEN ALL 4 DOORS UNLOCK THEMSELVES - (SO NOW ALL 4 DOORS ARE UNLOCKED). THE ONLY WAY FOR ME TO LOCK THE CAR AT THIS POINT IS TO USE THE KEY FOB.
THE CADILLAC CUE SCREEN FREEZES WHILE I AM DRIVING THE CAR (VEHICLE IN MOTION - OR COULD BE STOPPED AT RED LIGHT, BUT ENGINE IS ON). THIS HAS HAPPENED DOZENS OF TIMES DURING THE PAST 1 YEAR THAT I HAVE OWNED THE CAR. I AM SUDDENLY UNABLE TO INCREASE/DECREASE VOLUME, CHANGE RADIO STATION, CANNOT USE GPS, CANNOT ADJUST ANYTHING ON THE CUE SCREEN -- IT IS COMPLETELY FROZEN. THE ONLY WAY TO GET IT WORKING AGAIN - PULL OFF TO SIDE OF ROAD. SHUT ENGINE OFF; GET OUT OF CAR; LOCK THE CAR DOORS; RE-ENTER THE CAR; START THE VEHICLE ENGINE - USUALLY THE CUE SCREEN IS ONCE AGAIN RESPONSIVE AT THIS POINT. THIS IS A MAJOR PAIN AS DURING A RECENT 1 HOUR DRIVE TO PENNSYLVANIA, IT HAPPENED 4 TIMES AND I HAD TO PULL OVER TO THE SHOULDER OF INTERSTATE HIGHWAY I-195. EXITING ANY VEHICLE ON AN INTERSTATE HIGHWAY IS SOMEWHAT NERVE-RACKING.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNED A 2017 CADILLAC XTS. AFTER THE CONTACT PARKED AND EXITED THE VEHICLE, THE ENTIRE VEHICLE CAUGHT FIRE. THE FIRE DEPARTMENT WAS CALLED AND EXTINGUISHED THE FIRE. NO ONE WAS INJURED. THE VEHICLE WAS DESTROYED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT TAKEN TO A DEALER OR DIAGNOSED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS CONTACTED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 19,563. *JS
THE LANE DEPARTURE AND LANE KEEP ASSIST, BOTH SAFETY FEATURES, DO NOT WORK WITH ANY DEGREE OF CONSISTENCY. THEY ONLY WORK OCCASIONALLY. 2 DEALERS CONFIRMED THE PROBLEM BUT WITHOUT A FACTORY FIX THEY ARE UNABLE TO REMEDY THE PROBLEM.

The basics
How to read this data
Complaints, recalls, investigations β hereβs what each number actually tells you about a used Cadillac XTS, in plain English.
What is an NHTSA Complaint?
An NHTSA safety complaint is a report filed directly by a vehicle owner or driver describing a safety-related issue. Anyone can submit a complaint at NHTSA.gov. The number of complaints is a signal of how common a problem is β but complaints per model-year matter more than raw totals, since popular vehicles naturally receive more reports. The Cadillac XTS has 217 complaints on record across 7 model years.
What is a Safety Recall?
A safety recall is a mandatory campaign issued by NHTSA when a vehicle component poses an unreasonable risk to safety or does not comply with federal motor vehicle safety standards. Unlike complaints (which are owner-reported), recalls are formally investigated and confirmed by regulators. Manufacturers must fix recalled vehicles free of charge. The Cadillac XTS has 15 recall campaigns in the NHTSA database.
What Are Crash Complaints?
Crash complaints are NHTSA filings where the owner indicates a crash occurred as part of the incident. 5 of the Cadillac XTS's 217 complaints involved a crash. This metric is particularly important because it indicates how often defects resulted in actual collisions β a key safety signal beyond general reliability.
How Is the Reliability Verdict Calculated?
The reliability verdict (Poor) is generated by analyzing the vehicle's total complaints, recall history, crash complaint ratio, fire complaint ratio, and top component failures relative to class averages. This verdict gives buyers a quick interpretation before they review year-level details and VIN-level history. It should be treated as one decision input, not a substitute for a VIN-specific report.
Why Do Newer Years Have Fewer Complaints?
Newer model years appear to have fewer complaints because there has been less time for owners to file them. Complaints accumulate over years of ownership. A 2020 model year vehicle will typically show fewer complaints than a 2015 model year even if it is less reliable β simply because fewer owners have had time to report issues. Focus on complaints per year of market presence when comparing across model years.
Fleet Data vs. Individual VIN
Everything on this page reflects aggregated data across all Cadillac XTS vehicles on the road β not any specific car. Two Cadillac XTS vehicles of the same year can have very different histories: one may have been in three accidents and have an open recall; another may be clean. A VIN check gives you the individual car's history: accidents, title brands, odometer records, service history, and real-time recall status.
What Are NHTSA Investigations?
When NHTSA receives a pattern of related safety complaints, it opens a formal investigation. A Preliminary Evaluation (PE) is the first stage β NHTSA determines if a safety defect may exist. If evidence is strong, it escalates to an Engineering Analysis (EA), which can result in a mandatory recall. The Cadillac XTS has 0 investigations on record (0 active). Investigations listed above may have already led to the recalls shown on this page.
