Crash test ratings

NHTSA NCAP crash test ratings

New Car Assessment Program

NCAP crash tests measure how well a vehicle protects occupants in controlled frontal crash, side crash, and rollover scenarios. Stars are awarded per category (5 = safest). These laboratory results are independent of owner complaints and are performed by NHTSA engineers on new production vehicles.

NCAP crash test ratings for this model are not yet loaded or this vehicle was not tested in the years analyzed. NHTSA tests a subset of new vehicles each year. Check nhtsa.gov/ratings directly for the latest results.

FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEMMay 2012

THE FUEL PUMP ON MY R 1200 ST MOTORCYCLE IS MOUNTED INSIDE THE FUEL TANK AND PROVIDES FUEL UNDER PRESSURE TO THE PRESSURE REGULATOR. FUEL EXITS THE TANK THROUGH A QUICK DISCONNECT FITTING SCREWED INTO THE PLATE ON WHICH THE FUEL PUMP IS MOUNTED. DURING A ROUTINE INSPECTION I NOTICED CRACKS AROUND THE THREADED HOLE THAT THE QUICK DISCONNECT FITTING SCREWS INTO. BOTH THE QUICK DISCONNECT FITTING AND THE PLATE WITH THE THREADED HOLE ARE PLASTIC. IF THE CRACKS CONTINUE TO GROW, FUEL UNDER PRESSURE WILL LEAK ONTO MYSELF AND HOT ENGINE PARTS, CAUSING SIGNIFICANT DAMAGE AND INJURY. THE PARTS IN QUESTION ARE USED ON NUMEROUS OTHER BMW MOTORCYCLE MODELS, INCLUDING THE OTHER R 1200 MODELS, K 1200 MODELS, AND K 1300 MODELS.

SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULICOct 2010

REAR BRAKE DRAG - MY 2007 BMW R1200ST MOTORCYCLE HAD THE REAR BRAKE PADS REPLACED AT THE 18,000 MILE SERVICE. THE FRONT PADS STILL HAVE WELL OVER 50% MATERIAL REMAINING. I WAS CONCERNED ABOUT THE PREMATURE WEAR ON THE REAR PADS, SO I TOOK MY MOTORCYCLE FOR A SHORT RIDE (LESS THAN 5 MILES). UPON RETURNING, THE FRONT BRAKE DISKS AND CALIPERS WERE COOL, BUT THE REAR DISK AND CALIPER WERE BOTH TOO HOT TO TOUCH. IN ADDITION TO WASTING FUEL, THE DRAGGING REAR BRAKE COULD LEAD TO A FIRE IF ANY COMBUSTIBLE MATERIALS WERE PRESENT. A REVIEW OF ON-LINE BMW MOTORCYCLE FORUMS REVEALS THAT SEVERAL OTHER INDIVIDUALS HAVE COMPLAINED ABOUT PREMATURE REAR BRAKE PAD WEAR AND EXCESSIVE DISK AND CALIPER TEMPERATURES. *TR

VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEMApr 2021

THROTTLE CABLE BELL CRANKS CRACK DUE TO POOR QUALITY PLASTIC MATERIAL. THIS CAUSES MOTORCYCLE TO SUDDENLY LOSE POWER AS HAND THROTTLE NO LONGER WORKS, AND ENGINE RETURNS TO IDLE SPEED. THIS CAN LEAD TO A SERIOUS SAFETY HAZARD IF THIS OCCURS ON HIGH SPEED ROADWAYS, FREEWAY ETC. MY VEHICLE WAS BEING SERVICED WHEN THE CRACKS (AND IMPENDING FAILURE) WERE NOTICED BY SERVICE PERSONNEL.

FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINEMay 2011

1) SMELLED FUEL WHILE RIDING, SAW FUEL LEAKING ONTO HOT MOTOR, STOPPED IMMEDIATELY. 2) A PLASTIC QUICK-DISCONNECT COUPLER HAD CRACKED ALLOWING FUEL AT HIGH PRESSURE TO SPRAY ONTO HOT MOTORCYCLE ENGINE. AIR COOLED MOTOR, EXTREME FIRE RISK. 3) BMW PART # IS 13537674765, MADE BY COLDER PRODUCTS COMPANY. PART IS PLASTIC, BECOMES BRITTLE AND CRACKS OR BREAKS OFF ON THE MALE SIDE OF CONNECTOR. THERE ARE TWO LINES (FEED & RETURN) SECOND PLASTIC COUPLER BROKE OFF DURING DISASSEMBLY. CPC ALSO MAKES THE EXACT SAME QUICK- COUPLER IN CHROME PLATED BRASS, I REPLACED BOTH PLASTIC CONNECTORS WITH METAL ONES. TOTAL COST OF REPAIR WAS LESS THAN $100 INCLUDING NEW CLAMPS & O-RINGS. I HAVE THE OLD PARTS, BUT THIS IS A COMMON PROBLEM, KNOWN TO BMW AND MANY HAVE FAILED. ALL BMW R1200RT, R1200ST, R1200GS MODELS HAVE THESE FUEL LINE QUICK-DISCONNECTS SITTING ON TOP OF THE MOTOR CONNECTING THE FUEL TANK. THEY SHOULD BE RECALLED BEFORE SOMEONE BURNS TO DEATH ON THEIR BIKE. *TR

FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINEApr 2011

I OWN A 2005 BMW R1200ST MOTORCYCLE, IT HAS 28,837 MILES ON IT AND THE QUICK DISCONNECTS FOR THE FUEL TANK ARE PLASTIC AND WILL/DO BREAK UNEXPECTEDLY. THUS UPON NOTICING THIS CONDITION I PROCEEDED TO REPLACE THE PLASTIC WITH STEEL PARTS WHERE AS WHEN THE MALE TO FEMALE THREADED PLUG WAS CHANGED THE PLASTIC FUEL PUMP HOUSING CRACKED AND RENDERED THE MOTORCYCLE INOPERABLE UNTIL A REPLACEMENT FUEL PUMP CAN BE SHIPPED FROM GERMANY.THIS TRANSFERS THE FUEL UNDER PRESSURE TO THE EFI AND WHEN TURNED ON WITH THE CRACK SPRAYS/LEAKS FUEL OVER THE SIDE OF THE MOTORCYCLE ONTO THE HOT EXHAUST. THE MOTORCYCLE WAS TRAILERED TO THE DEALER WHERE THE PART WAS ORDERED FROM GERMANY WITH A TWO WEEK WAIT AT THE PRICE OF $475.00 PLUS S&H AND INSTALLATION CHARGES YET TO BE DETERMINED. *TR

These pages show model-year patterns across 8 years. Enter a VIN to verify the exact vehicle's accident history, title brands, odometer records, and open recall status before purchase.

The basics

How to read this data

Complaints, recalls, investigations — here’s what each number actually tells you about a used BMW R 1200 ST, in plain English.

01

What is an NHTSA Complaint?

An NHTSA safety complaint is a report filed directly by a vehicle owner or driver describing a safety-related issue. Anyone can submit a complaint at NHTSA.gov. The number of complaints is a signal of how common a problem is — but complaints per model-year matter more than raw totals, since popular vehicles naturally receive more reports. The BMW R 1200 ST has 7 complaints on record across 8 model years.

02

What is a Safety Recall?

A safety recall is a mandatory campaign issued by NHTSA when a vehicle component poses an unreasonable risk to safety or does not comply with federal motor vehicle safety standards. Unlike complaints (which are owner-reported), recalls are formally investigated and confirmed by regulators. Manufacturers must fix recalled vehicles free of charge. The BMW R 1200 ST has 10 recall campaigns in the NHTSA database.

03

What Are Crash Complaints?

Crash complaints are NHTSA filings where the owner indicates a crash occurred as part of the incident. 0 of the BMW R 1200 ST's 7 complaints involved a crash. This metric is particularly important because it indicates how often defects resulted in actual collisions — a key safety signal beyond general reliability.

04

How Is the Reliability Verdict Calculated?

The reliability verdict (Excellent) is generated by analyzing the vehicle's total complaints, recall history, crash complaint ratio, fire complaint ratio, and top component failures relative to class averages. This verdict gives buyers a quick interpretation before they review year-level details and VIN-level history. It should be treated as one decision input, not a substitute for a VIN-specific report.

05

Why Do Newer Years Have Fewer Complaints?

Newer model years appear to have fewer complaints because there has been less time for owners to file them. Complaints accumulate over years of ownership. A 2020 model year vehicle will typically show fewer complaints than a 2015 model year even if it is less reliable — simply because fewer owners have had time to report issues. Focus on complaints per year of market presence when comparing across model years.

06

Fleet Data vs. Individual VIN

Everything on this page reflects aggregated data across all BMW R 1200 ST vehicles on the road — not any specific car. Two BMW R 1200 ST vehicles of the same year can have very different histories: one may have been in three accidents and have an open recall; another may be clean. A VIN check gives you the individual car's history: accidents, title brands, odometer records, service history, and real-time recall status.

07

What Are NHTSA Investigations?

When NHTSA receives a pattern of related safety complaints, it opens a formal investigation. A Preliminary Evaluation (PE) is the first stage — NHTSA determines if a safety defect may exist. If evidence is strong, it escalates to an Engineering Analysis (EA), which can result in a mandatory recall. The BMW R 1200 ST has 0 investigations on record (0 active). Investigations listed above may have already led to the recalls shown on this page.
