At highway speeds when approaching any large vehicle the motorcycle oscillates to the point of loss of control. This occurs at distances up to 300 yards. In brisk cross winds on open road the same condition exists, but is multiplied in close proximity to other vehicles. I had the bike inspected and serviced by a BMW dealer and nothing mechanical was found. My background is in aviation, and in my 30 years experience this acts and feels like an aerodynamic instability issue. I have been riding for 40 years and outside of "tank slap," when racing I have never experienced anything like this on a road bike under normal riding conditions. There are many forum posts with the same concerns, but no viable solutions. BMW has not been helpful.

The motorcycle was taken to the dealer to be diagnosed, and it was determined that the failure was caused by a torquing issue with the rear-wheel bolts. The motorcycle was repaired, but the failure persisted. The motorcycle was returned to the dealer and diagnosed with rear shock failure. The motorcycle was repaired again; however, the failure persisted. The motorcycle was returned a third time; however, the dealer did not diagnose the motorcycle because the failure could not be duplicated. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure, and a case was opened. The failure mileage was approximately 100.
I own a 2018 BMW K1600B motorcycle. At highway speeds above approximately 65 mph, the rear of the motorcycle feels unstable and moves side to side, creating an unsafe riding condition. The motorcycle does not feel planted on the road and requires constant rider correction to maintain a straight path. I have verified tire pressures are correct and have tested different suspension settings, rider and luggage preload settings, windshield positions, and riding modes including Dynamic mode. The condition remains present regardless of these adjustments. The instability becomes more noticeable at higher highway speeds and creates a feeling that the rear of the motorcycle is moving away from the rider. This affects rider confidence and appears to be a potential safety issue because it can make the motorcycle difficult to control. I am submitting this complaint because the condition appears abnormal and may be related to known stability concerns reported by other owners of similar BMW K1600 motorcycles.

2018 BMW K1600** To whom it may concern My name is [XXX] and I am filing a safety complaint regarding my 2018 BMW K1600 motorcycle VIN [XXX] . My motorcycle has a serious and dangerous stability problem that happens at normal highway speeds. While riding at about sixty miles per hour and higher the motorcycle begins to wobble and feel unstable. The front end becomes light and the handlebars feel like they want to move on their own. The back of the motorcycle moves from side to side as if the rear is shifting under me. At times it feels like the bike is sliding or going out from underneath me even though the road is straight and smooth. This is a very unsafe feeling and it can happen at any time on the highway. This instability becomes worse when passing large trucks or riding in crosswind. The movement is not caused by rider input. The bike has correct tire pressure and has no suspension or frame modifications. This issue appears linked to the design or mechanical components of the motorcycle. The wobble is strong enough that it feels like a loss of control could happen without warning. This puts the rider at risk of a serious accident or injury. I am aware that similar complaints have been reported by many other BMW K1600 owners in these model years and that NHTSA has previously reviewed this issue. I respectfully request that NHTSA reopen and fully investigate this wobble and stability problem for the 2018 BMW K1600 motorcycle line and determine whether a recall or corrective action is needed to ensure rider safety. When I drive my motorcycle on the highway with 70 mph +/- 5 miles, the bike is unstable, the steering bar is shaking, and it is hard to keep the bike in the lane. I complained to the dealer, they balanced the wheel, tested the bike, but the problem has not been solved.
The motorcycle (BMW K1600 Grand America) goes into "Limp Mode" with the engine warning light where the motorcycle has no power until stopped, shutdown, and restarted. This happened to my motorcycle 4 times. Each time the BMW service cannot find any indication stored in the onboard computer. Also, there have been many reported issues of this in the BMW motorcycle forums. This issue is extremely dangerous because the last time this issue occurred, I was on a highway traveling at 70MPH in the left lane and suddenly lost power. Another time this occurred was during rush hour traffic. Both occurrences are very troubling.
THE MOTORCYCLE WILL RANDOMLY GO INTO WHAT BMW CALLS "LIMP MODE" AND THE OPERATOR WILL LOSE ALL THROTTLE CONTROL. POTENTIALLY FATAL IF IT HAPPENS IN CERTAIN CIRCUMSTANCES LIKE HEAVY TRAFFIC ON AN INTERSTATE, AT NIGHT WITH NOWHERE TO PULL OVER LIKE IT DID WITH ME. I purchased this NEW BMW motorcycle on 7/26/2025. On my ride home from the dealership the safety incident occurred on the freeway trying to pass a semi with a trailer. All factory original equipment and only me on the motorcycle. While passing the semi the motorcycle started shaking out of control and I had to slow down to 40 mph in a 70 mph zone trying regain stability of the motorcycle. The dealership was now closed when this occurred. There were no freeways located by the dealership to test this scenario prior to purchase. I posted what occurred on a k1600 forum that night about the problem. I received hundreds of replies saying replace the windshield but it was a common problem even after replacement. Sunday 7/27/2025 I ordered a windshield. When the dealership reopened on 7/29/2025 I called to see what BMW suggests to correct the problem. The dealership told me BMW had no fixes. I said then I would like to return the motorcycle if BMW does not have a fix. They told me they would not return it, but that I should try and replace the windshield with a Klock Werks or 7 Juress windshield and that should fix the problem. I installed the windshield and with no crosswinds was able to pass a semi trailer on the freeway without incident. I felt more confident and continued to ride with hesitance. Then I rode with crosswinds and other traffic and tried to pass the tractor trailer going 60 mph and it did it again. I removed the footboard and tour pack/top pack. After removal it is no longer life threatening to pass a semi in cross winds. My problem is that being a new bike with all the equipment from the factory that the motorcycle should be safe to ride in any road condition. As an experienced rider of 30 years my fear is that in rain should this occur a rider could loose control and have a wreck. BMW needs to fix this problem for rider safety and the safety of others on the American road. I would really like the manufacturer BMW to return this motorcycle.
The Reverse function failed at 18,000 miles and 2 years in service. I am told that on the BMW K1600 motorcycles it's a matter of "when" the reverse fails rather than "if" . stopped facing downhill could be bad on a fully loaded motorcycle built for touring and packed for a trip, and the reverse function doesn't work. If the vehicle didn't have the feature one could take precautions, but this cold be dangerous.
On this motorcycle while traveling at highway speeds oscillation or swaying occurs. Or described by a wobble. Mine definitely does this and it’s very unsafe.
The motorcycle is unstable at speeds above 60 mph from excessive wind buffeting. The issue is made even worse when riding on freeways with semi-trucks. The steering starts to shake and the motorcycle feels out of control.
After spending 500 miles on the motorcycle, having spent money on a set of new tires (supposedly was the fix) even and I even had the dealer look over the motorcycle, I have came to the conclusion that there is a serious engineering issue with this motorcycle. At speeds above 55mph, the motorcycle is having a steering oscillation issue. Basically, it does not track straight and exhibits a wobble. This can happen at any time, even on open highways, in traffic it seems to be worse. It can feel like it is becoming uncontrollable at times. This has been happening since mile #1 of the motorcycle. I have spoken with other owners and this seems to be an issue for others as well. There is documented video of this on youtube. Please investigate and determine why this is happening.
At speeds over 60 MPH, the BMW K1600 B motorcycle is unstable and wobbles. The instability at speeds over 60 MPH are unsafe, and I, nor my wife, will ever ride it again as it feels like the motorcycle is going to lose control and fall over at high speeds causing injury or death to us or others. BMW Motorcycles of Cleveland inspected it, rode it and verbally stated that they agree it has stability issues over 60 MPH, but only indicated in the written report that it handles to spec. It is available for inspection by any other BMW or Independent motorcycle technician. There are no warning messages or indications on the motorcycle indicating this issue.
The fuel pump failed in a way that it soaked my left leg with fuel while riding the motorcycle. My safety was at risk from major burns if the fuel had ignited on the exhaust. No warning lights came on.
I'm a recent owner of this motorcycle and have experienced a consistent feeling of what motorcyclists refer to as a "Death wobble" or at a minimum the beginnings of one. It happens during interstate highway speeds and predominantly during heavy traffic and it's magnified even more while approaching and passing tractor-trailers. I've been riding motorcycles both competitively as well as for personal use for well over 40 years and have NEVER experienced this phenomenon with any other motorcycle I've owned, well over 30 different models at this point. The only times I have experienced this type of behavior from a motorcycle was during High-speed racing and, as with this bike, I've been able to correct it by SLOWLY reducing speeds. However, With this bike it's during normal highway speeds (usually around 70+) while approaching traffic. Semi-trailers seem to be the worst culprits, but it happens with regular vehicles as well. Any disturbance in the bike's slipstream seems to cause the wobble. The bike never really loses control but it feels like [XXX] (to put it bluntly) and it forces you to either backoff or try and get around the traffic as quickly as possible. If it is a windy day, the problem is exponentially exacerbated to the point that is truly unsafe to ride. Again, I have NEVER experienced this with any other motorcycle, not even a BMW GT650 Scooter handled traffic as bad as this bike. I feel as there is some sort of defect with the design of the bike that causes this "wobble" when it encounters unstable air. For reference, I also test drove a 2021 version of the exact bike and it experiences the same affects as my 2019 model does.
