Crash test ratings

NHTSA NCAP crash test ratings

New Car Assessment Program

NCAP crash tests measure how well a vehicle protects occupants in controlled frontal crash, side crash, and rollover scenarios. Stars are awarded per category (5 = safest). These laboratory results are independent of owner complaints and are performed by NHTSA engineers on new production vehicles.

NCAP crash test ratings for this model are not yet loaded or this vehicle was not tested in the years analyzed. NHTSA tests a subset of new vehicles each year. Check nhtsa.gov/ratings directly for the latest results.

What the complaint data suggests

TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2003 BMW K1200 GT MOTORCYCLE. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE ATTEMPTING TO ACCELERATE AT 3 MPH, THE VEHICLE SLID FROM UNDER HIM AND CRASHED. THE CONTACT SUSTAINED BRUISES AND A POLICE REPORT WAS NOT FILED OF THE INCIDENT. THE VEHICLE WAS INDEPENDENTLY INSPECTED AND A FUEL LEAK WAS DISCOVERED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE INCIDENT. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 28,082.

Fuel level sensor failure. Fuel gauge showed half a tank full, but it was actually empty. The engine stalled. Brakes do not work with engine stalled. The BMW dealer confirmed the malfunction and said it was a common failure. There were not previous instances of this same problem with my motorcycle. No warnings of any kind.

UPON STARTING THE MOTORCYCLE THE "NORMAL" CHECKLIST WAS REPLACED WITH "BRAKE FAILURE". DEALER TESTED THE ABS UNIT AND INDEED IT FAILED. USED THIS MOTORCYCLE IN A VERY LIMITED CAPACITY DUE TO LIMITED BRAKING. DEALER STATED THE UNIT WAS NOT COVERED UNDER WARRANTY OR RECALL. IN RESEARCHING THIS PROBLEM I HAVE FOUND IT IS A COMMON ISSUE WITH THIS UNIT. REPLACED THE ABS UNIT THRU DEALER 4/15. I FEEL THIS SHOULD BE ADDRESSED THRU THIS AGENCY AS IT IS DEFINITELY A MANUFACTURING/PROGRAMMING PROBLEM THAT THEN BECOMES A SAFETY ISSUE. *TR

FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEMAug 2013

FUEL PUMP MOUNTING BOSS FOR FUEL LINE CONNECTION CRACKED. FUEL SPRAYS ONTO BACK OF ENGINE AND FLOWS ON TO THE EXHAUST SYSTEM, I SAW SMOKE COMING FROM UNDER BIKE WHEN STOPPED AT END OF DRIVEWAY. SAW FUEL RUNNING DOWN THE SIDE OF THE ENGINE ON TO THE EXHAUST. THE MOTORCYCLE WAS NOT FULLY WARM, IT HAD BEEN RUNNING ONLY 1-2 MINUTES. BASED ON THE FLOW OF LEAKING FUEL, THE MOTORCYCLE WOULD HAVE CAUGHT FIRE WHEN THE ENGINE AND EXHAUST REACHED NORMALLY OPERATING TEMPERATURE. THIS FAILURE HAS BEEN DOCUMENTED AT K-BIKES.COM AND I-BMW.COM AND ON THIS COMPLAINT SITE. *TR

THIS MOTORCYCLE HAS REPEATEDLY STALLED AS I DECELERATE TO A STOP. THE DAY OF THIS REPORT IT STALLED 5 TIMES. THE DEALER HAS NOT BEEN ABLE TO DETERMINE WHY THIS HAPPENS AFTER SEVERAL INSPECTIONS BY THE DEALER. THE MOTORCYCLE RESTARTS IMMEDIATELY BUT IT IS A SAFETY ISSUE SINCE BRAKING AND TRAFFIC FLOW PROBLEMS ARE CREATED BY THIS STALLING. THIS ISSUE HAS BEEN RECURRING FOR THE YEAR I HAVE OWNED THIS VEHICLE. *TR

THE DEALER AND AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC WERE CONTACTED AND ADVISED HIM THAT THERE WAS AN UPDATE FOR THE SYSTEM. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT INSPECTED BY A DEALER NOR REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT CONTACTED. THE FAILURE AND CURRENT MILEAGES WERE APPROXIMATELY 59,000.

THE FUEL PUMP FLANGE ON THIS 2008 BMW K1200GT IS LEAKING ONTO THE ENGINE BELOW. THIS IS A KNOWN PROBLEM WITH THIS MODEL AS SEEN IN THIS LINK: HTTPS://WWW.ASPHALTANDRUBBER.COM/RECALL/BMW-FUEL-FLANGE-LEAK-RECALL-2020/ AND ALSO AT THE LINK BELOW WHICH SHOWS NHTSA'S LETTER ABOUT THIS PROBLEM HTTPS://STATIC.NHTSA.GOV/ODI/RCL/2020/RCAK-20V471-2669.PDF ON MY MOTORCYCLE GAS IS LEAKING OUT FROM THE SAME FUEL PUMP FLANGE AND LEAKING DOWN ONTO THE ENGINE.. THIS IS A FIRE HAZARD AS NOTED IN NHTSA'S REPORT. I HAVE INCLUDED A YOUTUBE VIDEO LINK BELOW THAT SHOWS HOW AND WHERE THE GAS IS LEAKING OUT FROM MY GAS TANK. THIS OCCURS IF THE BIKE IS STATIONARY OR IN MOTION. SEE BELOW: HTTPS://WWW.YOUTUBE.COM/WATCH?V=PWUSMVRBN8M I AM ASKING THAT MY BMW MOTORCYCLE BE INCLUDED IN THIS RECALL AS IT HAS THE SAME PROBLEM AS THE OTHER 2008 K1200GT BIKES THAT WERE COVERED. I AM NOT SURE WHY MY BIKE WOULD NOT ALSO BE IN THAT RECALL.

MY 2008 BMW K1200GT I HAVE OWNED SINCE NEW AND WITH ONLY 21,000 MILES ON THE ODOMETER HAD ITS ABS PUMP FAIL. WHEN TOLD ABOUT THE ISSUE THE DEALER ATTEMPTED TO CLEAR THE TROUBLE CODES AND THE BRAKE FAIL LIGHT CAME BACK ON. WHEN THIS HAPPENS MY BIKE HAS NO ABS WHICH IS A HUGE DEAL ON 2 WHEELS. JUST THIS PAST WEEKEND I HAD A DEER RUN OUT IN FRONT OF ME ON A ROAD IN UPSTATE NEW YORK DOING 55 MPH. THE WHEELS LOCKED UP AND I HAD TO REGAIN TRACTION WHILE TRYING TO AVOID THE DEER. BMW WANTS $2000.00 JUST FOR THE PUMP AND THAT DOESN'T EVEN INCLUDE SWAPPING THEM OUT! DEALER ADVISES REPLACEMENT OF FINAL DRIVE ASSEMBLY IS REQUIRED WITH COST OF $2269. BIKE HAS ALL REQUIRED BMW SERVICE MAINTENANCE. *TR

FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEMMay 2014

WHILE RIDING ON TWISTY ROAD, MOTORCYCLE LOST POWER, CAUSING BIKE TO FALL INTO SHARP TURN, NEARLY RESULTING IN POTENTIALLY DANGEROUS SITUATION. Check the exact car

Before you buy, check the exact BMW K 1200 GT

These pages show model-year patterns across 9 years. Enter a VIN to verify the exact vehicle's accident history, title brands, odometer records, and open recall status before purchase.

The basics

How to read this data

Complaints, recalls, investigations โ€” hereโ€™s what each number actually tells you about a used BMW K 1200 GT, in plain English.

01

What is an NHTSA Complaint?

An NHTSA safety complaint is a report filed directly by a vehicle owner or driver describing a safety-related issue. Anyone can submit a complaint at NHTSA.gov. The number of complaints is a signal of how common a problem is โ€” but complaints per model-year matter more than raw totals, since popular vehicles naturally receive more reports. The BMW K 1200 GT has 22 complaints on record across 9 model years.

02

What is a Safety Recall?

A safety recall is a mandatory campaign issued by NHTSA when a vehicle component poses an unreasonable risk to safety or does not comply with federal motor vehicle safety standards. Unlike complaints (which are owner-reported), recalls are formally investigated and confirmed by regulators. Manufacturers must fix recalled vehicles free of charge. The BMW K 1200 GT has 8 recall campaigns in the NHTSA database.

03

What Are Crash Complaints?

Crash complaints are NHTSA filings where the owner indicates a crash occurred as part of the incident. 1 of the BMW K 1200 GT's 22 complaints involved a crash. This metric is particularly important because it indicates how often defects resulted in actual collisions โ€” a key safety signal beyond general reliability.

04

How Is the Reliability Verdict Calculated?

The reliability verdict (Good) is generated by analyzing the vehicle's total complaints, recall history, crash complaint ratio, fire complaint ratio, and top component failures relative to class averages. This verdict gives buyers a quick interpretation before they review year-level details and VIN-level history. It should be treated as one decision input, not a substitute for a VIN-specific report.

05

Why Do Newer Years Have Fewer Complaints?

Newer model years appear to have fewer complaints because there has been less time for owners to file them. Complaints accumulate over years of ownership. A 2020 model year vehicle will typically show fewer complaints than a 2015 model year even if it is less reliable โ€” simply because fewer owners have had time to report issues. Focus on complaints per year of market presence when comparing across model years.

06

Fleet Data vs. Individual VIN

Everything on this page reflects aggregated data across all BMW K 1200 GT vehicles on the road โ€” not any specific car. Two BMW K 1200 GT vehicles of the same year can have very different histories: one may have been in three accidents and have an open recall; another may be clean. A VIN check gives you the individual car's history: accidents, title brands, odometer records, service history, and real-time recall status.

07

What Are NHTSA Investigations?

When NHTSA receives a pattern of related safety complaints, it opens a formal investigation. A Preliminary Evaluation (PE) is the first stage โ€” NHTSA determines if a safety defect may exist. If evidence is strong, it escalates to an Engineering Analysis (EA), which can result in a mandatory recall. The BMW K 1200 GT has 0 investigations on record (0 active). Investigations listed above may have already led to the recalls shown on this page.
