Crash test ratings

NHTSA NCAP crash test ratings

New Car Assessment Program

NCAP crash tests measure how well a vehicle protects occupants in controlled frontal crash, side crash, and rollover scenarios. Stars are awarded per category (5 = safest). These laboratory results are independent of owner complaints and are performed by NHTSA engineers on new production vehicles.

NCAP crash test ratings for this model are not yet loaded or this vehicle was not tested in the years analyzed. NHTSA tests a subset of new vehicles each year. Check nhtsa.gov/ratings directly for the latest results.

FUEL SYSTEM, DIESELOct 2025

The contact owns a 2015 BMW 328D. The contact stated that while driving 15-25 MPH, there was an abnormal sound coming from the engine, and the vehicle failed to accelerate as intended while depressing the accelerator pedal. The contact stated that the vehicle stalled. The contact was able to coast to the side of the road. The vehicle failed to restart. The contact was unsure if any warning lights were illuminated. The vehicle was towed to a BMW-Authorized mechanic, who diagnosed that the fuel pump had failed, and there were metal shavings found in the fuel. The vehicle was not repaired due to the cost. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and referred the contact to the NHSTA Hotline for assistance. The contact related the failure to NHTSA Campaign Number: 21V586000 (FUEL SYSTEM, DIESEL); however, the VIN was not included. The failure mileage was 150,000.

POWER TRAINApr 2025

The contact owns a 2015 BMW 328D. The contact stated that while driving 5 MPH, the vehicle hesitated. Additionally, while attempting to accelerate, the vehicle briefly lost motive power before slamming into gear. No warning lights were illuminated. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired by an independent mechanic or a dealer. The contact related the failure to NHTSA Campaign Number: 20V185000 (Power Train); however, the VIN was not included. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and referred the contact to the NHTSA Hotline for assistance. The failure mileage was approximately 49,000.

FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEMOct 2024

The high pressure fuel pump failed i see there are recalls for 2014-2018 similar bmw with diesel engine and mine is not included with recall although it clearly has the faulty part. The car will no longer start and I am being quoted $18,000 to repair it which makes the car useless i just got it for $10,000

FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEMMar 2024

I was driving on a busy two lane road. The vehicle instantly decelerated and made a large thump while driving at 55mph. The vehicle information system said there was a drivetrain malfunction, and all power was instantly gone. We were able to quickly pull off onto a small section off the road, but not in a safe manner, almost going into the ditch, in which I strongly was anticipating was going to be a total loss to the car as an accident and Injury to myself and my wife. The vehicle then after waiting several hours was towed to a certified BMW shop to be looked at. The shop noted that it sounded like it was a high pressure fuel pump failure that caused the car to abruptly decelerate. The shop confirmed that the high pressure fuel pump did fail and with high probability took out all components associated with the fuel system. The recall/ safety issue only covered the high pressure fuel Pump to 10 years or 120k miles. I have a 141k on the vehicle the issue is the safety aspect of the vehicle suddenly decelerating when at a safe driving speed with no way of knowing the issue with a the pump. These pumps and all components should be covered not only because of cost but because of the general issue of instant deceleration and the safety of not only the driver in the car but those that could be effected driving on the road with the car. This issue should not minimized by the manufacturer based on mileage or years of operation. It’s clearly an issue that is common and an issues that can have ramifications on the customers safety as well as those external of the vehicle.

Vehicle is 100% BMW Serviced for it's history, showroom to present. Vehicle had been smoking after sitting 2-3 days and driving. We'd park and see wisps of smoke coming from the wheelwells and engine bay. Alarming! Never witnessed open flame, but as the saying goes, if there's smoke... Questionable component: 328xd Fuel Sensor Probe (BMW part #13-53-8-594-893 Fuel Feed Line 135040 ) Complaint/Report pertains to Fuel Sensor Probe failure and resultant fuel propagation(backfeeding/leaking fuel from sensor connection) into adjacent wiring/engine bay foils. Diagnostic System did not report sensor failure until extensive damage and hazard was realized. BMW USA responded to report as NOT COVERED BY WARRANTY(high mile vehicle) and therefore not of responsibility of BMW. According to local BMW Service team the event is NOT UNUSUAL and that several vehicles with same fail/error codes have exhibited similar fuel leakage/propagation/damages. VERY PROBABLE FIRE HAZARD Costly repairs; if system had detected failure when sensor failed we would have had it fixed. We reported the smoking several times but the service department didn't isolate the problem. We continued to drive the vehicle cross-country for 6+ months; each time the problem got worse. WE GOT LUCKY Repair bills came to almost $10k by the time we added all visits and the entire wiring bundle that had to be replaced due to fuel damage. Failed Sensor repair is around $750? BMW needs to implement a way to mitigate this problem to keep from having some potentially catastrophic/lethal endings. Similar problems that have contributed to vehicle fires in these BMW vehicles: 1) HEATER BOX malfunctions 2) PCV VALVE 3) COOLANT LEAK

POWER TRAINSep 2022

Date of complete failure noted below (09/05/22) On 2 previous occasions, approx. 7 days earlier and a week earlier as car was making a slow left turn, not from a stop, one rear wheel shuddered, and the engine seemed to rev as if missed a gear. I lifted off the throttle, and then the car operated normally. The complete failure occurred (3rd occurance) on Sept. 7. Accelerating slowly from a traffic light, turning left (again), the car exhibited the above, but much more severe. I was finally able to gain speed, but drove slowly to try to get home, about 1 mile distant. Many malfunction messages came onto the screen (listed below) Got the car home, tried to put car into "Park" but park would not engage. Engaged the emergency brake to keep car from rolling down the driveway. Shut the engine down Curious to see if the car would restart, or possibly "reset" and operate normally, I noted the shifter now indicated "Park" and now would not go into any other position / gear. Message "roadside assistance". Car is noe immobile /inoperable. Error messages: Transmission malfunction chassis stabilization drive moderately drivetrain malfunction call roadside assistance

VISIBILITY/WIPERAug 2022

I was driving on the freeway at 70mph, the indicated speed limit. It was cloudy, drizzling rain. No large vehicles near me. All of a sudden it sounded like a gunshot went off right above my head. I had the panoramic sunshade closed so I couldn't see anything, but my first thought was that the glass of the panoramic sunroof had shattered. After 5 more minutes of driving (so I could safely get home), I parked the car and stepped out of the door and looked at the roof. Sure enough, the front of the two pieces of glass had shattered right in the middle, about 150 square inches open to the sky, and dozens of pieces of broken glass had fallen in between the interior sunroof shade and where the glass was supposed to be. Thank goodness I had the shade closed, otherwise the pieces of glass would have landed on me and my girlfriend (who was sitting in the passenger seat.) There was no hail, no lightning, and no loose rocks from any vehicles in front of me. It was about 82 degrees Fahrenheit, so not abnormally warm.

FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEMJul 2022

The engine stopped running as I was driving. I was able to coast to a stop but once stopped I was unable to put the vehicle in neutral so it was blocking the roadway. The cause of the vehicle engine to stop was a failure on the high pressure fuel pump. I see there has been a recall issued for this defect but my vehicle was not included. Must be an error on BMWs identification of the vehicles affected.

FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEMSep 2021

The fuel tank has some kind of leak, not specified where by the dealership, but I suspect it is on the top of the tank. When I first had this vehicle serviced in 2019, I mentioned a small of diesel. The service advisor told me it was a diesel "feature". Having recently acquired another diesel vehicle that does not smell, I requested a proper check be made this year. I now believe the tank was leaking when I first bought the car in 2018. A cursory search of the Internet shows that this is not an unusual occurrence. I was quoted $3200 for the repair, a ridiculous amount that is probably 25% the market value of a non-leaking car. BMW need to recall all F30 models and replace any leaking tanks at their expense. I am only continuing to use the vehicle as no liquid is in evidence and diesel is very hard to ignite. Were the car gasoline powered I would have little choice but to get the car repaired.

ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLINGJun 2021

The contact owns a 2015 BMW 328D. The contact received notification of NHTSA Campaign Number: 18V755000 (Engine and Engine Cooling). The vehicle was taken to the dealer for the recall repair and the contact was informed by the dealer that the exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) valve needed to be replaced due to leakage however, the EGR valve was not part of the recall repair, and the contact needed to pay for EGR valve. The vehicle was not repaired and remained at the dealer. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure but provided no assistance. The failure mileage was 67,409. Parts distribution disconnect.

Before you buy, check the exact BMW 328D

These pages show model-year patterns across 5 years. Enter a VIN to verify the exact vehicle's accident history, title brands, odometer records, and open recall status before purchase.

The basics

How to read this data

Complaints, recalls, investigations β€” here’s what each number actually tells you about a used BMW 328D, in plain English.

01

What is an NHTSA Complaint?

An NHTSA safety complaint is a report filed directly by a vehicle owner or driver describing a safety-related issue. Anyone can submit a complaint at NHTSA.gov. The number of complaints is a signal of how common a problem is β€” but complaints per model-year matter more than raw totals, since popular vehicles naturally receive more reports. The BMW 328D has 178 complaints on record across 5 model years.

02

What is a Safety Recall?

A safety recall is a mandatory campaign issued by NHTSA when a vehicle component poses an unreasonable risk to safety or does not comply with federal motor vehicle safety standards. Unlike complaints (which are owner-reported), recalls are formally investigated and confirmed by regulators. Manufacturers must fix recalled vehicles free of charge. The BMW 328D has 24 recall campaigns in the NHTSA database.

03

What Are Crash Complaints?

Crash complaints are NHTSA filings where the owner indicates a crash occurred as part of the incident. 5 of the BMW 328D's 178 complaints involved a crash. This metric is particularly important because it indicates how often defects resulted in actual collisions β€” a key safety signal beyond general reliability.

04

How Is the Reliability Verdict Calculated?

The reliability verdict (Poor) is generated by analyzing the vehicle's total complaints, recall history, crash complaint ratio, fire complaint ratio, and top component failures relative to class averages. This verdict gives buyers a quick interpretation before they review year-level details and VIN-level history. It should be treated as one decision input, not a substitute for a VIN-specific report.

05

Why Do Newer Years Have Fewer Complaints?

Newer model years appear to have fewer complaints because there has been less time for owners to file them. Complaints accumulate over years of ownership. A 2020 model year vehicle will typically show fewer complaints than a 2015 model year even if it is less reliable β€” simply because fewer owners have had time to report issues. Focus on complaints per year of market presence when comparing across model years.

06

Fleet Data vs. Individual VIN

Everything on this page reflects aggregated data across all BMW 328D vehicles on the road β€” not any specific car. Two BMW 328D vehicles of the same year can have very different histories: one may have been in three accidents and have an open recall; another may be clean. A VIN check gives you the individual car's history: accidents, title brands, odometer records, service history, and real-time recall status.

07

What Are NHTSA Investigations?

When NHTSA receives a pattern of related safety complaints, it opens a formal investigation. A Preliminary Evaluation (PE) is the first stage β€” NHTSA determines if a safety defect may exist. If evidence is strong, it escalates to an Engineering Analysis (EA), which can result in a mandatory recall. The BMW 328D has 0 investigations on record (0 active). Investigations listed above may have already led to the recalls shown on this page.
