Crash test ratings

NHTSA NCAP crash test ratings

New Car Assessment Program

NCAP crash tests measure how well a vehicle protects occupants in controlled frontal crash, side crash, and rollover scenarios. Stars are awarded per category (5 = safest). These laboratory results are independent of owner complaints and are performed by NHTSA engineers on new production vehicles.

NCAP crash test ratings for this model are not yet loaded or this vehicle was not tested in the years analyzed. NHTSA tests a subset of new vehicles each year. Check nhtsa.gov/ratings directly for the latest results.

What the complaint data suggests

ENGINEJan 2023

The contact owns a 2013 BMW 320I. The contact stated while starting the vehicle, there was smoke coming from the exhaust pipe due to engine oil leaking into the catalytic converter. As a result, the catalytic converted became clogged. The vehicle was taken to the dealer, where it was diagnosed that the oil check valve needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 76,000. The VIN was unavailable.

engine overheating, passenger safety belt, failed speed control (difficulty accelerating) Due to these issues and malfunctions; it causes injury to the driver as the airbags/seat belts are not stable. If the car suddenly stops it can injure the driver. The vehicle shuts off unexpectedly, vehicle loses power/ says to drive moderately or stop driving/ the car drives slow does not past 35 mph, the car goes into 'limp mode' (less than 10 mph) it goes in a very low speed with no acceleration; This is a safety hazard, as it becomes easy to be rear-ended by another driver when it slows substantially. This can cause injury to the driver and surrounding drivers. The problem has been reproduced or confirmed by a dealer or independent service center. The water pump and thermostat was replaced, however, the car still does not accelerate and is in a low driving speed mode. It still shuts off unexpectedly. The issue has not been resolved. The warning signs were 'drive moderately, engine overheated, passenger safety belt, with cranking noises, no acceleration, limp mode (car is going very slow no more than 10 mph).

CrashSERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC,SERVICE BRAKESNov 2013

RE: TCN-KDN21-40701 ON 9/17/13 I WAS INVOLVED IN A CAR ACCIDENT. I WAS UNABLE TO STOP MY CAR AS IT ROLLED DOWN A HILL - ALTHOUGH I APPLIED THE BRAKES. THE ACCIDENT OCCURRED AS I WAS LEAVING A DRIVEWAY WHICH IS POSITIONED ON A HILL. IMMEDIATELY PRIOR TO THE ACCIDENT A WARNING MESSAGE FLASHED ON MY SCREEN. I THEN HEARD A LOUD "POP" AND THEN A "GRINDING" NOISE. AS I APPLIED THE BRAKES THE CAR CONTINUED ROLLING DOWN THE HILL AND THE AIRBAG POPPED OUT - KNOCKING ME UNCONSCIOUS. I WAS UNABLE TO STOP THE CAR. WHEN MY CAR REACHED THE BOTTOM OF THE HILL, IT HIT THE BACK OF ANOTHER CAR AND THEN TRAVELED ACROSS THE HIGHWAY. IT'S A MIRACLE I WASN'T KILLED! IRONICALLY, THE MAKE/MODEL MODEL OF MY CAR WAS RECALLED THE WEEK AFTER MY ACCIDENT. (REFER TO NHTSA RECALL # 13V454000). BMW CHECKED MY CAR AFTER THE ACCIDENT AND CLAIMED THAT MY CAR PASSED WITH "FLYING COLORS". THIS DOES NOT MAKE SENSE CONSIDERING THAT THE CAUSE OF MY ACCIDENT WAS DUE TO MY INABILITY TO STOP THE CAR - YET THE CAR WAS RECALLED DUE TO BRAKING PROBLEMS. BMW WAS ALSO UNABLE TO PROVIDE ME WITH AN EXPLANATION REGARDING THE GRINDING NOISE, THE POPPING SOUND OR WHY MY AIRBAG DEPLOYED PRIOR TO THE CRASH. MY CAR FIT ALL OF THE CRITERIA FOR THE CARS BMW WERE RECALLING. WHEN I INITIALLY ASKED BMW IF MY CAR WAS ON THE RECALL LIST THEY FIRST TOLD ME THAT THEY DID NOT HAVE THE COMPLETE VIN# LIST. WHEN I INQUIRED THE SECOND TIME - BMW CLAIMED THAT MY CAR'S VIN # WAS NOT ON THE RECALL LIST. I DO NOT BELIEVE BMW. AND THE FACT THAT BMW CHECKED THE CAR AND CLAIMED NOTHING WAS WRONG WITH IT IS LIKE THE POLICE POLICING THE POLICE. BMW DOES NOT WANT TO ACKNOWLEDGE THAT MY CAR WAS SUBJECT TO THE DEFECT THAT IT WAS BEING RECALLED FOR WHICH IS WHY THE ACCIDENT OCCURRED. BMW DOES NOT WANT TO SUBJECT IT SELF TO LITIGATION. HOWEVER, I DO NOT ACCEPT BMW'S FINDINGS BECAUSE IT IS NOT OBJECTIVE. BMW IS LYING. *TR

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEMApr 2026

The fuel system was causing my engine to shut down, and I got it replaced at a mechanic. About some time later, after fixing the fuel system, I received a letter from BMW telling me that they had extended the warranty on the Fuel tank, but when I took it in, they said that there was no such extended warranty. The letter is from April 2022, but I just recently found it.

UNKNOWN OR OTHERNov 2025

My 2015 BMW 320 is having a performance issue. After I diagnosed this is due to corrosion on the wastegate actuator and has failed. The bushing and part corroded and the rod is dangling. This should be covered by the extended warranty on the part as it’s a known defect failure by BMW

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,EXTERIOR LIGHTINGOct 2025

Vehicle continues to have lighting and electrical issues. Particularly, the left rear turn signal. I’ve repaired it 5 times and it burns out immediately. Dealer assured me they would find issue. Still burned out next day again. Notified dealership and they just want you to keep bringing it back but won’t issue a recall despite the plethora of complaints online about the same issue.

FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEMSep 2025

The gas tank on my BMW 320i 4 door sedan is leaking gas. Yes; it is available for inspection upon request. I had picked up my son from school and ran an errand. We stopped for gas when we noticed the gas was leaking as soon as we filled up the tank. We were around the corner from our home and drove home very slow. We were prepared to stop and pull over if necessary as we were afraid of the vehicle catching fire. I have an appointment with Niello BMW at 8am on 9/22/25 in Sacramento, CA on Fulton Ave. There were no warning lamps/messages or other symptoms prior to the issue. I never received any recall notification.

ENGINEFeb 2025

I have barely driven this BMW 320i from 2015. It is a well taken car parked in the garage. It has 33,000 miles on it. The check engine light came on so I brought it in for a diagnostic. The error is N63R Engine - Replace Wastegate Actuators and Program the Vehicle. The mechanic told me most BMW's in 2015 had a recall for this issue and this car should have a recall. So, I called BMW and they said it does not have a recall. I checked on the NHTSA site and the car does not have a recall. However, after some research, I found that many models from this year have a recall for this exact issue. This BMW320i from 2015 should also have this recall! There is no coincidence that the Wastegate failed in several models in the same year. To exclude this model from the recalls is unfair.

FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINEOct 2024

The contact owns a 2015 BMW 320I. The contact stated that after his wife had refueled the vehicle, he noticed that the vehicle was leaking fuel on the driver's side rear. There was a puddle of fuel on the ground. There were no warning lights illuminated. The contact called an independent mechanic who stated that the failure was due to the pressurized fuel system. The contact called the local dealer and was informed that there were no recalls on the VIN. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was contacted, and the contact was referred to the NHTSA Hotline. The failure mileage was approximately 145,000.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,WHEELS,SERVICE BRAKESMay 2024

The engine would completely shut down while driving you had to completely take foot off gas petal because it would not excellent to make the car run it would almost come to complete slow down and stop you could then push gas and it would pick up and start running again.was worse when raining. Then the brakes got to where they would not stop and would lock up.Iwas on busy road and on interstate when it happened several times I could have been hit in the rear end and it would have caused a major collision. There was no warning lights come on at any point and timethen the brakes started where they would get hot and start smoking and eventually they locked up could not even drive the car . I didn't have the money to try to get it fixed so my 2015 BMW 320i sit for months before I could get it looked at had to replace frount and back rotors, calipers and brakes, ABS system replaced. When they checked it out the man at KADENZA AUTO REPAIR SHOP said that was only the second BMW that they had worked on that had this problems and didn't know why or what caused the problem. They did the repairs but couldn't guarantee that it wouldn't happen again said it could be a manufacturer defects. It was really dangerous when it started doing it because I could have been hit in the back of the car and it would have caused a major car pile up accident. It started doing it several months back because I wasn't able to drive it for several months had to tow it in when I took it to KADENZA AUTO REPAIR .They specialize in foreign and domestic cars.

I have been getting P0420 code over 2 years now. Loss of power while driving caused multiple times sudden stop and slow speed. I328 has recall but mine is not on the recall list. I tried everything to fix it but the light still comes on. And also my car is having the Navigation display delaminating. It seems like common problem for bmw owners. There are no recalls.

EXTERIOR LIGHTINGMar 2024

The contact owns a 2015 BMW 320i. The contact stated that while driving at approximately 35 MPH the passenger side headlight stopped illuminating the road. The contact stated that there was no warning light illuminated. The contact stated that about one month later the driver's side headlight stopped illuminating and the "headlight" symbol illuminated on the instrument cluster. The contact stated that the headlights illuminated when she used the high beam setting but would not function on the low beam setting. The vehicle was not taken to a dealer or independent mechanic. The vehicle was not diagnosed and was not repaired. The contact had replaced both headlamp bulbs and the low beams would not illuminate. The manufacturer was not informed of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 135,000.

These pages show model-year patterns across 6 years. Enter a VIN to verify the exact vehicle's accident history, title brands, odometer records, and open recall status before purchase.

The basics

How to read this data

Complaints, recalls, investigations β€” here’s what each number actually tells you about a used BMW 320I, in plain English.

01

What is an NHTSA Complaint?

An NHTSA safety complaint is a report filed directly by a vehicle owner or driver describing a safety-related issue. Anyone can submit a complaint at NHTSA.gov. The number of complaints is a signal of how common a problem is β€” but complaints per model-year matter more than raw totals, since popular vehicles naturally receive more reports. The BMW 320I has 93 complaints on record across 6 model years.

02

What is a Safety Recall?

A safety recall is a mandatory campaign issued by NHTSA when a vehicle component poses an unreasonable risk to safety or does not comply with federal motor vehicle safety standards. Unlike complaints (which are owner-reported), recalls are formally investigated and confirmed by regulators. Manufacturers must fix recalled vehicles free of charge. The BMW 320I has 13 recall campaigns in the NHTSA database.

03

What Are Crash Complaints?

Crash complaints are NHTSA filings where the owner indicates a crash occurred as part of the incident. 5 of the BMW 320I's 93 complaints involved a crash. This metric is particularly important because it indicates how often defects resulted in actual collisions β€” a key safety signal beyond general reliability.

04

How Is the Reliability Verdict Calculated?

The reliability verdict (Below Average) is generated by analyzing the vehicle's total complaints, recall history, crash complaint ratio, fire complaint ratio, and top component failures relative to class averages. This verdict gives buyers a quick interpretation before they review year-level details and VIN-level history. It should be treated as one decision input, not a substitute for a VIN-specific report.

05

Why Do Newer Years Have Fewer Complaints?

Newer model years appear to have fewer complaints because there has been less time for owners to file them. Complaints accumulate over years of ownership. A 2020 model year vehicle will typically show fewer complaints than a 2015 model year even if it is less reliable β€” simply because fewer owners have had time to report issues. Focus on complaints per year of market presence when comparing across model years.

06

Fleet Data vs. Individual VIN

Everything on this page reflects aggregated data across all BMW 320I vehicles on the road β€” not any specific car. Two BMW 320I vehicles of the same year can have very different histories: one may have been in three accidents and have an open recall; another may be clean. A VIN check gives you the individual car's history: accidents, title brands, odometer records, service history, and real-time recall status.

07

What Are NHTSA Investigations?

When NHTSA receives a pattern of related safety complaints, it opens a formal investigation. A Preliminary Evaluation (PE) is the first stage β€” NHTSA determines if a safety defect may exist. If evidence is strong, it escalates to an Engineering Analysis (EA), which can result in a mandatory recall. The BMW 320I has 0 investigations on record (0 active). Investigations listed above may have already led to the recalls shown on this page.
