"2003 VOLVO V40 COLD START BRAKE FAILURE" ON COLD WINTER MORNINGS, WHEN TEMPERATURE IS BELOW FREEZING, AFTER THE ENGINE IS STARTED AND AS I BACK OUT OF MY GARAGE, THE BRAKE IS SO WEAK THAT I CANNOT EFFECTIVELY STOP THE VEHICLE. I WOULD NEED TO PRESS THE BRAKE PEDAL AS HARD AS I CAN AND THE CAR WOULD STOP IN ABOUT A FULL CAR'S LENGTH. IT'S QUITE SCARY. THE PROBLEM ALWAYS GOES AWAY IN ABOUT 1 TO 2 MINUTES. THIS ONLY HAPPENS OCCASIONALLY, ABOUT 2 TO 3 TIMES A MONTH IN THE WINTER, BUT I AM NOT ABLE TO PREDICT WHEN IT HAPPENS. I HAVE COMPLAINED TO MY VOLVO DEALERSHIP AND LEFT MY CAR THERE OVERNIGHT. BUT THEY WERE NOT ABLE TO REPRODUCED THE FAILURE. THEY SUGGESTED ME TO REPLACE THE BRAKE VACUUM BOOSTER PUMP. SO I DID AND PAID FOR A NEW BRAKE VACUUM BOOSTER PUMP. HOWEVER THE PROBLEM WAS NOT SOLVED OR ALLEVIATED. KNOWING THIS COULD HAPPEN ANY TIME, I AVOID USING MY VOLVO IN THE WINTER AND USE EXTRA CAUTION DURING OTHER TIMES. *TR

1. THERE IS A WHOOPING CRANE SOUND WHEN I STEP ON THE FOOT FEED AND THEN RELEASE. THE DEALER SAID IT WAS REPAIRED AND THEN WHEN I DROVE IT HOME IT WAS STILL MAKING THE NOISE. AFTER NO RESPONSE FROM MY COMPLAINT TO THEM I STOPPED THE PAYMENT VIA AE AND HAVE STILL HEARD NOTHING. I THINK I PUT THE WRONG YEAR OF MY VEHICLE IN THE BEGINNING AND IF I TRY TO GO BACK I LOOSE EVERYTHING. IT IS A 2003 XC90 PURCHASED IN 12/02. THANK YOU FOR ANY HELP YOU CAN GIVE. IF YOU CAN'T HELP, PLEASE AT LEAST SEND ME AN EMAIL AND TELL ME SO. THANKS. 2. ANOTHER PROBLEM THAT STARTED IN JULY 2006 IS A KNOCKING NOISE COMING FROM UNDERNEATH THE VEHICLE. AFTER NUMEROUS TRIPS TO THE DEALER I WAS TOLD A NEW BOX FOR THAT PARTICULAR ITEM AND IT WOULD COST $2800.00 TO REPAIR. BUT THEY COULD NOT GUARANTEE THAT WOULD FIX THE PROBLEM. MY XC90 HAD A 4 YR OR 50,000 WARRANTY. THIS PROBLEM STARTED IN JULY 2006 WITH 41800 MILES. I TOOK POSSESSION OF THE CAR IN 12/02 SO MY MATH SAYS THE WARRANTY EXPIRED 12/06 AND THAT MEANS IT WAS STILL UNDER WARRANTY WHEN THIS WAS FIRST NOTICED. I HAVE HAD THE VEHICLE IN AT LEAST EVERY 4 MONTHS FOR SERVICE AND EACH TIME COMPLAINED ABOUT IT. ALSO I HAD IT IN AT LEAST 5 TIMES FROM JUNE THRU JULY 2007 WITH NO SATISFACTION. NOW THEY DON'T EVEN ANSWER MY EMAILS OR RETURN MY PHONE CALLS. I HAVE CONTACTED THE CONSUMER COMPLAINT DEPARTMENT OF VOLVO AND THEY HAVE NEVER ANSWERED ME. I AM AT A LOSS AS TO WHAT TO DO. THIS CAR WAS PURCHASED AT POWER VOLVO OF CERRITOS (THEN IT WAS CALLED VOLVO OF CERRITOS) PLEASE HELP ME! *TR

SEAT BELTSJun 2004

SEAT BELTS ARE DEFECTIVE. WHEN PULLING ON THE SEAT BELTS THEY WILL NOT REACH THE BUCKLE. THUS, MAKING IT IMPOSSIBLE TO ATTACH AND RIDE. CONSUMER INDICATES THAT THIS DEFECT WAS REPAIRED BY THE DEALERSHIP IN MAY 2004. CURRENTLY, THEY LOCKED UP AGAIN. *AK

AIR BAGSFeb 2008

THE DRIVER'S SIDE AIRBAG HAS FAILED FOR NO APPARENT REASON. THE COST OF REPAIR WILL BE AROUND $900.00 THE CAR WAS PURCHASED 4 YEARS AGO. THAT IS A VERY COSTLY REPAIR FOR A RELATIVELY YOUNG VEHICLE. I ASKED THE SERVICE REPRESENTATIVE AT MY AUTHORIZED VOLVO REPAIR SHOP IF I SHOULD EXPECT THE RIGHT SIDE TO FAIL AS SOON AS I REPAIR THE LEFT ONE. HE SAID "NO, THE RIGHT NEVER GOES OUT." "I HAD ONE IN JUST LAST WEEK- EXACT SAME PROBLEM AS YOURS." *TR

๐Ÿ’ฅ CrashSERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULICMay 2005

ON APRIL 13, 2005 AT APPROXIMATELY 4 PM, I WAS BACKING MY V40 VOLVO 2004 WAGON OUT OF A PARKING SPACE AT THE KOSSMAN GARAGE, LIBERTY AVENUE,PITTSBURGH, PA, GOING SLOWLY BECAUSE IT WAS A TIGHT SPACE, WHEN MY BRAKES DID NOT WORK, AT ALL. DESPITE PUSHING MY BRAKES AS FAR AS THEY WOULD GO, THE CAR DID NOT STOP, AND CRASHED INTO A CONCRETE SUPPORT BEAM, CRASHING IN THE ENTIRE BACK WINDOW AND DENTING THE BACK BUMPER VERTICALLY WHERE THE TALL CONCRETE BEAM HIT IT. THANK GOODNESS, NO PEOPLE WERE HURT, AND I WAS NOT INJURED EITHER. NO OTHER VEHICLES WERE DAMAGED, BECAUSE THE BEAM WAS DIRECTLY BEHIND ME, THANK GOODNESS. THE VOLVO HEADQUARTERS INSPECTED THE CAR AND SAID THERE WAS NOTHING WRONG, BUT THERE WAS INDEED SOMETHING WRONG WITH THE BRAKES. THROUGH MY INSURER, AMICA, I BECAME AWARE OF THE REPORTED HYDRAULICS PRO BLEM WITH BRAKES ON CERTAIN V40 VOLVO 2004 CARS. I ALSO FOUND A WEBSITE SHOWING A NOVEMBER, 2004 RECALL NOTICE REQUIRED TO BE SENT BY THE NATIONAL TRAFFIC AND MOTOR VEHICLE SAFETY ACT TO OWNERS OF SUCH VEHILCES, BUT I NEVER RECEIVED SUCH A NOTICE. WHAT IS MORE, EVEN AFTER MY ACCIDENT, THE COMPANY HAS NEVER TOLD ME OF SUCH A PROBLEM. I FOUND OUT TODAY ABOUT THIS, THANKS TO MY INSURER WHO RESEARCHED THIS. THE CAR IS NOW BEING REPAIRED, AT MY AND MY INSURERS EXPENSE, ALTHOUGH IT MAY BE DUE TO THE FAULTY BRAKES NOTED IN THE RECALL. I THINK THERE IS SOME RESPONSE NEEDED FROM VOLVO FOR NOT INFORMING ME OF THIS RECALL, FOR INDICATING IT WAS MY FAULT, AND FOR NOT BEING WILLING TO EVEN SEND ME A MEMO BASED ON THEIR EVALUATION OF MY CAR. MY INSURER IS ALSO WANTING TO KNOW WHAT THEIR RESPONSE IS.

TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A USED 2002 VOLVO V40 WHICH WAS PURCHASED IN 2002. HE STATED THAT IN ORDER FOR THE VEHICLE TO STOP, HE HAD TO APPLY EXTREME FORCE TO THE BRAKE PEDAL. THE FAILURE WOULD OCCUR AT VARIOUS SPEEDS, INCLUDING 5 MPH. HE ALSO STATED THAT THE BRAKE PEDAL WOULD BE DEPRESSED TO THE FLOOR-BOARDS BEFORE THEY WOULD ACTIVATE. ALTHOUGH RECALL CAMPAIGN NUMBER 03V474000, SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC POWER ASSIST, VACUUM IS RELATED TO THE FAILURE AS A RESULT OF NHTSA ACTION NUMBER EA02026, HIS VIN WAS NOT INCLUDED. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC WHERE HE WAS AWAITING REPAIRS, TO DATE. THE FAILURE AND CURRENT MILEAGES WERE UNDER 90,000.

I HAVE A 2002 VOLVO V40 AND IT HAS 50,200 MILES. MY DAUGHTER DRIVES THE CAR. I HAVE NOTICED THAT THE CAR ENGINE STALLS WHILE DRIVING AT SLOWER SPEEDS. THIS HAS HAPPENED TO ME OCCASIONALLY AND I CAN COUNT LIKE 20 TIMES. MY DAUGHTER EXPERIENCED THIS AND I DO NOT HAVE A COUNT. I CALLED CARLSEN VOLVO (650 - 493-1515 X 254) IN PALO ALTO AND THE SERVICE REP, DAN SAID THAT THE CAR HAS NO RECALL. THE CAR STALLED WHEN I DROVE IT TO COSTCO IN REDWOOD CITY FOR TIRE CHANGE ON 9/19/2008. CAN YOU TELL ME HOW I CAN RESOLVE THIS PROBLEM BEFORE A MAJOR ACCIDENT HAPPENS? *TR

ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLINGAug 2005

IT HAS BEEN 4 TIMES ALREADY (SINCE AUGUST 2002) THAT MY CAR'S ENGINE HAS STALLED WHILE DRIVING. IN ALL INSTANCES THE ENGINE STARTS BACK UP AGAIN. I NOTICE RIGHT AWAY BECAUSE I LOOSE THE POWER STEERING. FIRST TIME [AUGUST 2, 2002]: THE FIRST DAY I BOUGHT THE CAR (BRAND NEW) I WAS AT A RED LIGHT AND THE CAR TURNED OFF. SECOND TIME: THIS WAS LIKE SEVERAL MONTHS AFTER. I WAS DRIVING ON THE HIGHWAY AND THE ENGINE TURNED OFF. THIRD TIME [JUNE 7, 2005]: I LEFT MY CAR AT THE DEALER FOR AN OIL CHANGE. THE DEALER TOOK MY CAR FOR A TEST DRIVE AND THE ENGINE STALLED ON HIM. I TOLD THEM THAT I HAS HAPPENED TO ME 2 TIMES PREVIOUSLY. THEY REPLACED THE STARTER SWITCH FOR THAT REASON. FOURTH TIME [JULY 16, 2005:] I WAS DRIVING UPHILL ON A ZONE WITH TIGHT CURVES AND THE CAR STALLED AGAIN. THIS TIME I ALMOST HAD AN ACCIDENT CAUSE THE TURNS WERE TIGHT AND I HAD NO POWER STEERING. *JB

VEHICLE SPEED CONTROLAug 2005

I WAS DRIVING MY CAR YESTERDAY AUGUST 4TH, 2005 AND ALL OF A SUDDEN THE ACCELERATOR WOULD NOT WORK. I WAS IN THE MIDDLE OF AN INTERSECTION AND HAD TO COAST THE CAR TO THE SHOULDER OF THE ROAD. VERY SCARY WITH A 1 MONTH OLD INFANT IN MY BACK SEAT AND A VERY BUSY INTERSECTION. I TOOK THE CAR TO THE VOLVO DEALER OF PLEASANTON YESTERDAY WHO SAID HE WOULD HAVE TO REPLACE THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL ASSEMBLY. THE SAME THING HAPPENED ONCE BEFORE ABOUT 2 MONTHS AGO IN WALNUT CREEK ON A SIDE STREET. AFTER I COASTED TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD, I RESTARTED THE CAR WITHOUT A PROBLEM. *JB

2005 (SEP/NOV/DEC): ENGINE CHECK LIGHT ON 3 TIMES. DEALER REPAIRED ALL 3 TIMES AND FOLLOWING MONTHS, WHICH IS 2006, HAVING SUDDEN SHIFTING/ACCELARATING AT LOW SPEED. DEALER FIXED 2 TIMES AND 1 TIME COULDNOT FIND THE ISSUE. AUG. 18, 2007: CONTINUED HAVING SAME PROBLEMS PLUS CAR WAS JERKING ON FWY SPEED. TWO DAYS LATER, I COULDN'T START THE CAR. DEALER REPLACE NEG. BATTERY CABLE AND #4 IGNITION COIL. AUG.21, 2007: CALLED TO INFORM VOLVO NORTH AMERICA AND THEY SUGGESTED THAT I SHOULD TALK TO DEALER SERVICE MANAGER. AUG. 27, 2007: THE CAR IS HAVING SAME ISSUE: SUDDEN SHIFTING @ LOW SPEED & JERKING ON FWY SPEED. THIS IS VERY DANGEROUS TO DRIVE AND I DON'T KNOW WHEN THE CAR IS GOING TO STALL MIDDLE OF FWY. I TOLD THE DEALER THAT THE CAR SYMPTONS ARE VERY MUCH LIKE ETM PROBLEM (RECALL) ON OTHER MODELS. AUG. 29,2007: DEALER REPLACED ANOTHER #3 IGNITION COIL AND SPARK PLUG. I DON'T KNOW HOW MANY TIMES I WILL HAVE TO GO BACK TO THE DEALER FOR REPEAT REPAIR. THE DEALER DIDN'T BOTHER TO CHECK ETM UNIT. SO FAR, I AM LUCKY THAT I HAVEN'T GOTTEN ACCIDENT. (SAME DEALER SERVICE MY CAR SINCE 2001)

ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLINGJun 2007

TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2001 VOLVO V40. THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 105000. THE CHECK ENGINE WARNING INDICATOR LIGHT TURNS ON. THE VEHICLE HAS BEEN TAKEN TO BOTH VOLVO REPAIR SHOPS AND LOCAL MECHANICS NUMEROUS TIMES FOR THIS FAILURE. THEY ARE ABLE TO TURN THE LIGHT OFF; HOWEVER, IT USUALLY COMES BACK ON WITHIN THREE WEEKS. THE DEALER IS UNABLE TO DIAGNOSE THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 25,000. THE ENGINE SIZE IS UNKNOWN. THE VIN WAS PROVIDED BUT APPEARS TO BE INVALID.

ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLINGAug 2005

OVER THE WEEKEND MY CHECK ENGINE CAME ON IN MY V40 WAGON. WHEN IDLE IT ACTED AS IF IT WAS GOING TO STALL. A FEW TIMES IT DID, WHEN IDLE AT A STOP. IT DID RESTART MOST OF THE TIME RIGHT AWAY, BUT A FEW TIMES IT TOOK A COUPLE OF TRIES AND WAITING. I MADE AN APPOINTMENT TO BRING IT IN FOR SERVICE ON 6/28. ON 6/27 I WAS TAKING MY 7 MONTH OLD BABY TO DAY CARE WHEN IT STALLED IN THE MIDDLE OF DRIVING. LUCKILY THERE WAS NO ONE BEHIND ME AND I WAS ABLE TO PULL TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD. THE CAR WENT COMPLETELY DEAD WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 45 MPH. I HAD A BIT OF TROUBLE RESTARTING IT - BUT IT EVENTUALLY RESTARTED. I WAS VERY NERVOUS THE REST OF THE WAY TO THE DAY CARE, BUT I MADE IT WITHOUT IT STALLING. I WAS ABLE TO LEAVE THE DAY CARE AND DECIDED TO GET TO WORK AND HAVE IT TOWED TO THE DEALERSHIP. IT STALLED AGAIN. AFTER MANY TRIES AND 30 MINUTES LATER IT STARTED AND I MADE IT TO WORK. I HAD IT TOWED TO VOLVO. THEY FOUND A POWER SUPPLY INTERRUPTION CODE -ECM30 AND REPLACED THE MASS AIRFLOW SENSOR. PICKED UP THE CAR LATER THAT DAY AND ON MY WAY HOME FROM WORK THE CHECK ENGINE CAME ON AGAIN. AS I PULLED INTO MY DRIVEWAY IT STARTED STALLING AGAIN. TOOK IT BACK TO VOLVO ON 6/28. THEY WORKED ON IT FOR 5 HOURS WHILE I WAITED. THEY REPLACED THE FRONT OXYGEN SENSOR, STILL HAD PROBLEMS, REPLACED THE REAR OXYGEN SENSOR, THE LIGHT STILL CAME BACK ON. REPLACED BOTH SENSORS AGAIN AND LOADED SOFTWARE. THAT SEEMED TO DO THE TRICK. I HAVEN'T HAD THAT SAME PROBLEM AGAIN SO FAR. BUT I AM NOTICING THAT MY V40 SOMETIMES SLOWS (RPMS REV UP TO AROUND 4,000) WHEN ACCELERATING. THIS WAS VERY DANGEROUS BECAUSE WHEN I NEEDED TO ACCELERATE INTO TRAFFIC, VEHICLE SLOWED DOWN. WHEN I READ IN THE PAPER ABOUT OTHER VOLVO MODELS HAVE SIMILAR OCCURRENCES, I WANTED TO MAKE SURE SOMEONE NEW OF THE SAME TYPE OF PROBLEM HAPPENING IN THE 2001 V40 WAGON. EVERY REPAIR WAS UNDER WARRANTY AND DID NOT COST ME ANYTHING THANK GOODNESS. MY WARRANTY IS UP THIS WEEK -SURE HOPE THIS DOESN'T HAPPEN AGAIN.*JB

Before You Buy, Check the Exact Volvo V40

These pages show model-year patterns across 5years. Enter a VIN to verify the exact vehicle's accident history, title brands, odometer records, and open recall status before purchase.

๐Ÿ“– Understanding This Data

๐Ÿ“‹

What is an NHTSA Complaint?

An NHTSA safety complaint is a report filed directly by a vehicle owner or driver describing a safety-related issue. Anyone can submit a complaint at NHTSA.gov. The number of complaints is a signal of how common a problem is โ€” but complaints per model-year matter more than raw totals, since popular vehicles naturally receive more reports. The Volvo V40 has 80 complaints on record across 5 model years.

๐Ÿ””

What is a Safety Recall?

A safety recall is a mandatory campaign issued by NHTSA when a vehicle component poses an unreasonable risk to safety or does not comply with federal motor vehicle safety standards. Unlike complaints (which are owner-reported), recalls are formally investigated and confirmed by regulators. Manufacturers must fix recalled vehicles free of charge. The Volvo V40 has 9 recall campaigns in the NHTSA database.

๐Ÿ’ฅ

What Are Crash Complaints?

Crash complaints are NHTSA filings where the owner indicates a crash occurred as part of the incident. 4 of the Volvo V40's 80 complaints involved a crash. This metric is particularly important because it indicates how often defects resulted in actual collisions โ€” a key safety signal beyond general reliability.

๐Ÿงญ

How Is the Reliability Verdict Calculated?

The reliability verdict (Below Average) is generated by analyzing the vehicle's total complaints, recall history, crash complaint ratio, fire complaint ratio, and top component failures relative to class averages. This verdict gives buyers a quick interpretation before they review year-level details and VIN-level history. It should be treated as one decision input, not a substitute for a VIN-specific report.

๐Ÿ“Š

Why Do Newer Years Have Fewer Complaints?

Newer model years appear to have fewer complaints because there has been less time for owners to file them. Complaints accumulate over years of ownership. A 2020 model year vehicle will typically show fewer complaints than a 2015 model year even if it is less reliable โ€” simply because fewer owners have had time to report issues. Focus on complaints per year of market presence when comparing across model years.

๐Ÿ”

Fleet Data vs. Individual VIN

Everything on this page reflects aggregated data across all Volvo V40 vehicles on the road โ€” not any specific car. Two Volvo V40 vehicles of the same year can have very different histories: one may have been in three accidents and have an open recall; another may be clean. A VIN check gives you the individual car's history: accidents, title brands, odometer records, service history, and real-time recall status.

๐Ÿ”Ž

What Are NHTSA Investigations?

When NHTSA receives a pattern of related safety complaints, it opens a formal investigation. A Preliminary Evaluation (PE) is the first stage โ€” NHTSA determines if a safety defect may exist. If evidence is strong, it escalates to an Engineering Analysis (EA), which can result in a mandatory recall. The Volvo V40 has 0 investigations on record (0 active). Investigations listed above may have already led to the recalls shown on this page.
