Crash test ratings

NHTSA NCAP crash test ratings

New Car Assessment Program

NCAP crash tests measure how well a vehicle protects occupants in controlled frontal crash, side crash, and rollover scenarios. Stars are awarded per category (5 = safest). These laboratory results are independent of owner complaints and are performed by NHTSA engineers on new production vehicles.

NCAP crash test ratings for this model are not yet loaded or this vehicle was not tested in the years analyzed. NHTSA tests a subset of new vehicles each year. Check nhtsa.gov/ratings directly for the latest results.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEMApr 2024

This problem relates to the battery which was purchased 5 months before the incident. While riding my motorcycle down the freeway I lost all power (lights, engine, instruments, everything) abruptly and unexpectedly. This nearly caused an accident. A couple hours later the bike started with full power. I decided not to ride it home and left it in a parking garage. Over the next couple days I tried to determine the failure, but it was intermittent, sometimes the bike had full electrical power and the engine started normally, other times no power. Of course I checked the battery cables first. The screws were tight, the cables were secure. I didn't suspect the battery and was checking other things like fuses, stator, and ignition switch, and so on. While riding around the garage with the seat off, and the battery exposed, the bike died again. I quickly probed the battery and found 0V. A couple of minutes later, is restored full power and the battery again read 13.1V (I took pictures). Such behavior is odd for a battery but this is a complicated, and expensive lithium battery with internal electronics. It is the ATZ-10 ReStart 360CA battery. When I called Antigravity (the manufacturer) I talked to the call center, and a manager of manufacturing. They claimed to have never heard of this. However, when I looked the battery up on Amazon reviews, other people reported the same problem for the same battery. I purchased a different battery and the problem is gone.

ENGINEFeb 2022

The contact owns a 2021 Suzuki GXS-R1000. The contact stated that while her husband was riding 80 MPH, the motorcycle stalled while shifting from 3rd to 4th gear. The rider was able to coast to the side of the road and noticed fluid dripping onto the exhaust. Additionally, the chain had detached from the swing arm and pierced the motor. The contact pushed the motorcycle home. The contact took the motorcycle to the dealer who was unable to determine the cause of the failure. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 25,000.

IT APPEARS THERE ARE COMPLAINTS ABOUT THIS ALREADY BUT THIS FIRST PART FOR THE BRAKES/STABILITY MANAGEMENT SYSTEM AREN'T CLASSIFIED AS A RECALL BUT INSTEAD THEY PUT IT AS A CUSTOMER CAMPAIGN. I WAS SLOWING DOWN TO MAKE A TURN AT AN INTERSECTION, THEN THE BACK TIRE LOCKED UP UNDER BRAKING CAUSING THE REAR OF THE BIKE TO START SLIDING OUT WHICH ULTIMATELY MADE THE BIKE HIGH SIDE IN THE CORNER. THIS CONDITION HAS BEEN FOUND TO BE A ISSUE WITH A LOW BATTERY VOLTAGE APON STARTING THE MOTORCYCLE, WHICH DISABLES THE ABS/STABILITY MANAGEMENT. I ENDED UP BREAKING MY ANKLE IN 3 SPOTS, TORN TENDONS, AND HAVE NERVE DAMAGE, THE DOCTOR SAID MY BOOT WAS THE ONLY THING KEEPING MY FOOT FROM BEING TORN OFF. THE ACCIDENT HAPPENED PRIOR TO ANY KNOWN INFORMATION TO ME ABOUT A PROBLEM IN SEPTEMBER 2019. THE NEXT ISSUE HAS ALSO BEEN DOCUMENTED BUT AGAIN NO INFORMATION WAS GIVEN TO ME ABOUT IT AT ALL, I FOUND ALL THIS INFO OUT AFTER THE ACCIDENT. IN JANUARY 2020 GOT A CUSTOMER CAMPAIGN LETTER REGARDING THE ABS WHICH I STARTED LOOKING INTO AND FOUND OUT THESE ARE KNOWN PROBLEMS. THE DEALERSHIP (BOB LANDPHERE MOTORCYCLE) LOCATED IN TIGARD OREGON CLAIMS TO HAVE FIXED THE ISSUE OF A MISS SHIFT/ FALSE GEAR SELECTION. IT ONLY HAPPENS WHEN SHIFTING FROM 1ST TO 2ND WHICH WILL CREATE AN OVER REV SITUATION BECAUSE IT GOES INTO NEUTRAL INSTEAD OF 2ND GEAR WHICH IS DANGEROUS BY ITS SELF BUT IT GETS WORSE, WHEN THEN TRYING TO SELECT 2ND GEAR THE MOTORCYCLE CAN STRETCH/ AND SNAP THE CHAIN WHICH IS VERY DANGEROUS. MY BIKE HAS THIS ISSUE BUT AFTER LOOKING INTO IT, THE DEALERSHIP CLAIMED TO FIX THAT BEFORE I PURCHASED THE MOTORCYCLE & SUZUKI CLAIMS MY BIKE IS OUT OF WARRANTY AND THAT I WILL HAVE TO FIX THIS PROBLEM OUT OF POCKET SINCE ITS "ALREADY" BEEN REPLACED, MY CHAIN IS VERY STRETCHED AND I COULD ONLY IMAGINE ITS NEARING ITS STRETCH LIMIT AND WILL SNAP.

TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2017 SUZUKI GXS-R1000. THE CONTACT STATED AFTER PARKING THE MOTORCYCLE, THE ENGINE LATER WOULD NOT START. THE MOTORCYCLE WAS EXAMINED BY AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC WHO DIAGNOSED THAT THE ENGINE HAD FAILED DUE TO A FAULTY INTERNAL SWITCH. THE MOTORCYCLE WAS NOT YET REPAIRED. THE LOCAL DEALER WOODS FUN CENTER LOCATED AT 11405 N INTERSTATE HWY 35, AUSTIN, TX 78753 WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT YET CONTACTED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 17,000.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEMMar 2018

BOUGHT THE MOTORCYCLE LAST MONTH AND NOTICED THERE IS A "STOP RIDING" RECALL WHICH HAS TO BE PERFORMED IMMEDIATELY. CONTACTED THE DEALER ON 2/10/18 AND THEY ORDERED THE PARTS. CONTACTED THEM AGAIN ON 2/26/18 BUT WAS TOLD NO PARTS HAS BEEN RECEIVED YET. CONTACTED THE MANUFACTURER ON 3/5/18 AND NOTIFIED THE PART IS ON BACK ORDER AND WAITING TO ARRIVE FROM JAPAN. WAS PROMISED THEY WILL ARRIVE IN A COUPLE OF DAYS. HAVEN'T RECEIVED ANY CALLS YET. SPENT A LOT OF MONEY ON A BRAND NEW BIKE TO JUST HAVE IT SITTING IN MY GARAGE AND NOT BEEN ABLE TO USE IT IS RIDICULES AND VERY UNACCEPTABLE.

VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,ENGINEFeb 2018

TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2017 SUZUKI GSX-R1000. AFTER PULLING THE THROTTLE, A LOUD NOISE COULD BE HEARD FROM THE MOTORCYCLE AND IT BECAME INOPERABLE. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO FLORIDA MOTORSPORTS (6329 NAPLES BLVD, FL) WHERE IT WAS DIAGNOSED THAT THE OUTPUT SHAFT WAS DEFECTIVE AND NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE AND WOULD NOT DISCLOSE ANY DIAGNOSTIC INFORMATION. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 7,125.

THE POSITION LIGHTS THAT ARE LED ILLUMINATED ON THE R MODEL OF THE GSXR ARE COVERED BY PLASTIC THAT BECOMES SUSCEPTIBLE TO CRACKING AND BREAKING WITH NORMAL DRIVING WHEN THE MOTORCYCLE IS LEFT IN THE SUN DUE TO COMMON ROAD DEBRIS. WAS DRIVING AT 40-45 MPH ON A CITY STREET AFTER THE MOTORCYCLE WAS SITTING IN 90+ DEGREE HEAT ALL DAY WHEN A PEBBLE HIT THE FRONT OF THE MOTORCYCLE AND PUNCTURED THE LED POSITION/RUNNING LIGHTS. IT HAS LEFT THE ENTIRE HEADLIGHT SYSTEM SUSCEPTIBLE TO A SHORT/MALFUNCTION THAT COULD RESULT IN A FIRE. THE COVERING OR SINGLE LED IS NOT REPLACEABLE BUT INSTEAD THE ENTIRE FRONT HEADLIGHT ASSEMBLY MUST BE REPLACED AT A COST OF OVER $1100. THE LED LIGHT IS ANGLED AND NOT PERPENDICULAR WITH THE ROAD TO AVOID DIRECT HIT/PUNCTURE BUT YET STILL CRACKED AND HAS AN OPEN HOLE. I HAVE OWNED MOTORCYCLES FOR OVER 5 YEARS AND HAVE NEVER HAD ANY HEADLIGHT CRACK, BREAK, OR CHIP REGARDLESS OF USE.

The basics

How to read this data

Complaints, recalls, investigations — here’s what each number actually tells you about a used Suzuki GSX R1000, in plain English.

01

What is an NHTSA Complaint?

An NHTSA safety complaint is a report filed directly by a vehicle owner or driver describing a safety-related issue. Anyone can submit a complaint at NHTSA.gov. The number of complaints is a signal of how common a problem is — but complaints per model-year matter more than raw totals, since popular vehicles naturally receive more reports. The Suzuki GSX R1000 has 7 complaints on record across 10 model years.

02

What is a Safety Recall?

A safety recall is a mandatory campaign issued by NHTSA when a vehicle component poses an unreasonable risk to safety or does not comply with federal motor vehicle safety standards. Unlike complaints (which are owner-reported), recalls are formally investigated and confirmed by regulators. Manufacturers must fix recalled vehicles free of charge. The Suzuki GSX R1000 has 4 recall campaigns in the NHTSA database.

03

What Are Crash Complaints?

Crash complaints are NHTSA filings where the owner indicates a crash occurred as part of the incident. 1 of the Suzuki GSX R1000's 7 complaints involved a crash. This metric is particularly important because it indicates how often defects resulted in actual collisions — a key safety signal beyond general reliability.

04

How Is the Reliability Verdict Calculated?

The reliability verdict (Excellent) is generated by analyzing the vehicle's total complaints, recall history, crash complaint ratio, fire complaint ratio, and top component failures relative to class averages. This verdict gives buyers a quick interpretation before they review year-level details and VIN-level history. It should be treated as one decision input, not a substitute for a VIN-specific report.

05

Why Do Newer Years Have Fewer Complaints?

Newer model years appear to have fewer complaints because there has been less time for owners to file them. Complaints accumulate over years of ownership. A 2020 model year vehicle will typically show fewer complaints than a 2015 model year even if it is less reliable — simply because fewer owners have had time to report issues. Focus on complaints per year of market presence when comparing across model years.

06

Fleet Data vs. Individual VIN

Everything on this page reflects aggregated data across all Suzuki GSX R1000 vehicles on the road — not any specific car. Two Suzuki GSX R1000 vehicles of the same year can have very different histories: one may have been in three accidents and have an open recall; another may be clean. A VIN check gives you the individual car's history: accidents, title brands, odometer records, service history, and real-time recall status.

07

What Are NHTSA Investigations?

When NHTSA receives a pattern of related safety complaints, it opens a formal investigation. A Preliminary Evaluation (PE) is the first stage — NHTSA determines if a safety defect may exist. If evidence is strong, it escalates to an Engineering Analysis (EA), which can result in a mandatory recall. The Suzuki GSX R1000 has 0 investigations on record (0 active). Investigations listed above may have already led to the recalls shown on this page.
