I BOUGHT A 2010 PONTIAC VIBE AND 3 MONTHS LATER THE FRONT END OF THE CAR STARTED SHAKING REAL BAD SO I CALLED UP KOEHNE AUTO TO TELL THEM AND THEY WOULDN'T AS MUCH AS TALE IT FOR A TEST DRIVE TO SEE WHAT I WAS TALKING ABOUT. THEY KEPT ON LOOKING AT THE FRONT END AND KEPT TELLING ME THAT THERE WAS NOTHING WRONG WITH THE BRAKES THAT THE TIRES WERE BALD SO THEY PUT $500 DOLLARS WORTH OF TIRES ON THE CAR AND THEN I WENT BACK TO THEM AND TOLD THEM THAT THE PROBLEM WASN'T STILL FIXED SO I WENT TO MY PRIVATE MECHANIC AND HE LOOKED AT IT AND FOUND OUR THE BEARRINGS AND THE STABLIZER BAR WAS SHOT AND IT WAS DANGEROUS TO DRIVE AND THEY STILL ASSISTED OVER AT KOEHNE AUTO THAT IT WAS THE TIRES BEING BALED SO I DECIDED NOT TO PAY THE WHOLE AMOUNT OF THE CAR PAYMENT BECAUSE I WAS NOT GOING TO HAVE MY FAMILY OF BEING IN JEOPARDY OF BEING KILLED. I ASKED THEM TO LOWER THE CAR PAYMENT TO 250 BECAUSE OF ALL THE REPAIRS I HAD TO PAY FOR BECAUSE THEY WOULD NOT GO GOOD FOR THE REPAIRS. SO I STOPPED MAKING PAYMENTS IN OCTOBET RECIEVED ONE LETTER ABOUT THEM THREATIING TO REPO THE CAR JUST A COUPLE OF DAYS BEFORE CHRISTMAS AND THEY DIDN'T COME TO REPO IT UNTIL 3 MONTHS LATER ON MARCH9TH AT 6 OR 7:30 IN THE EVENING. I PAID OVER 5 GRAND BEFORE I HAD STOPPED MY PAYMENTS. I COULD NOT AFFORD THE REPAIRS PLUS THE HIGH CAR PAYMENT.OF 442.54 I FOUND OUT THERE ARE 6 RECALLS ON THIS VEHICLE AND THEY DIDNT ALERT ME UNTIL A COUPLE OF DAYS BEFORE THE CAR WAS REPODE. I WOULD LIKE MY MONEY BACK FROM ALL OF THE REPAIRS I MADE PLUS THE MONEY I PAID ON THE CAR AND A NEW CAR.
UNPREDICTABLE BEHAVIOR, INCLUDING ERRATIC SHIFTING, AN ENGINE THAT WON'T START, ILLUMINATION OF THE CHECK-ENGINE LIGHT, OR STALLING WHILE IN MOTION WHILE CITY DRIVING USUALLY OCCURRING BETWEEN 7-12 MILES OF TRAVEL. SAME ISSUE THE 2004-2008 RECALL WAS ISSUED FOR.
WHY CAN'T THEY PROVIDE THE NEEDED REPAIR IT'S BEEN ALMOST 1 YEAR. MY FAMILY IS IN DANGER.
THERE IS A PERSISTENT RATTLE COMING FROM DIRECTLY BEHIND THE STEERING WHEEL. ESPECIALLY NOTICEABLE AT SPEEDS <35 MPH AND/OR DRIVING OVER BUMPY PAVEMENT. WHEN THE RATTLE IS OCCURRING, THE STEERING COLUMN FEELS LIKE IT OSCILLATING VERY QUICKLY.
TAKATA RECALL I FIRST RECEIVED MY SAFETY RECALL NOTICE IN JULY 2016 AND MY SECOND NOTICE IN MAY 2017. BOTH TIMES I WAS INFORMED THAT I WOULD RECEIVE A CALL WHEN THE PARTS CAME IN BUT THE CALL NEVER CAME AND THE REPAIR NEVER DONE. YESTERDAY I WENT BEYOND THE DEALERSHIP AND SPOKE TO A GM REPRESENTATIVE WHO ALSO COULDN'T FIND ANY DEALERSHIP IN MY AREA WITH THE PARTS TO COMPLETE THE WORK. OF COURSE AT THIS POINT I ASKED FOR A "LOANER" CAR SINCE I HAVEN'T BEEN ABLE TO SAFELY PUT A PASSENGER IN THE FRONT SEAT FOR ELEVEN MONTHS! NEEDLESS TO SAY THAT REQUEST FELL ON DEAF EARS. IRONICALLY, AFTER ALL THAT, LAST NIGHT THE CAR WAS "TOTALED" AND I AM GRATEFUL THAT THE AIRBAG WAS NOT INVOLVED IN ANY INJURIES. MY MAIN POINT IN NOTIFYING YOU TODAY IS TO SAY THAT THIS HAS BEEN A SORRY EXCUSE FOR A RECALL. NO COMPANY SHOULD TAKE ELEVEN MONTHS AND STILL NOT BE ABLE TO REPAIR THE PROBLEM. NO COMPANY SHOULD DENY ME THE RIGHT TO USE THE PASSENGER SEAT OF MY VEHICLE AND NOT FACE CONSEQUENCES. YOU ALL NEED TO STEP UP TO THE PLATE AND TRULY PROTECT THE CONSUMER.

The basics
How to read this data
Complaints, recalls, investigations — here’s what each number actually tells you about a used Pontiac VIBE, in plain English.
What is an NHTSA Complaint?
An NHTSA safety complaint is a report filed directly by a vehicle owner or driver describing a safety-related issue. Anyone can submit a complaint at NHTSA.gov. The number of complaints is a signal of how common a problem is — but complaints per model-year matter more than raw totals, since popular vehicles naturally receive more reports. The Pontiac VIBE has 1,872 complaints on record across 8 model years.
What is a Safety Recall?
A safety recall is a mandatory campaign issued by NHTSA when a vehicle component poses an unreasonable risk to safety or does not comply with federal motor vehicle safety standards. Unlike complaints (which are owner-reported), recalls are formally investigated and confirmed by regulators. Manufacturers must fix recalled vehicles free of charge. The Pontiac VIBE has 51 recall campaigns in the NHTSA database.
What Are Crash Complaints?
Crash complaints are NHTSA filings where the owner indicates a crash occurred as part of the incident. 106 of the Pontiac VIBE's 1,872 complaints involved a crash. This metric is particularly important because it indicates how often defects resulted in actual collisions — a key safety signal beyond general reliability.
How Is the Reliability Verdict Calculated?
The reliability verdict (Poor) is generated by analyzing the vehicle's total complaints, recall history, crash complaint ratio, fire complaint ratio, and top component failures relative to class averages. This verdict gives buyers a quick interpretation before they review year-level details and VIN-level history. It should be treated as one decision input, not a substitute for a VIN-specific report.
Why Do Newer Years Have Fewer Complaints?
Newer model years appear to have fewer complaints because there has been less time for owners to file them. Complaints accumulate over years of ownership. A 2020 model year vehicle will typically show fewer complaints than a 2015 model year even if it is less reliable — simply because fewer owners have had time to report issues. Focus on complaints per year of market presence when comparing across model years.
Fleet Data vs. Individual VIN
Everything on this page reflects aggregated data across all Pontiac VIBE vehicles on the road — not any specific car. Two Pontiac VIBE vehicles of the same year can have very different histories: one may have been in three accidents and have an open recall; another may be clean. A VIN check gives you the individual car's history: accidents, title brands, odometer records, service history, and real-time recall status.
What Are NHTSA Investigations?
When NHTSA receives a pattern of related safety complaints, it opens a formal investigation. A Preliminary Evaluation (PE) is the first stage — NHTSA determines if a safety defect may exist. If evidence is strong, it escalates to an Engineering Analysis (EA), which can result in a mandatory recall. The Pontiac VIBE has 0 investigations on record (0 active). Investigations listed above may have already led to the recalls shown on this page.
