Crash test ratings
NHTSA NCAP crash test ratings

Shift lever/gear control and indicator devices: The vehicle can be switched off even when it isn't in park, and this action does not engage the parking function. Instead, it remains in Neutral, which means the car may rollβeven on a slight slope like a driveway. This poses a safety risk as the car could potentially move and endanger people exiting the vehicle. If the person is not attentive or physically unable to react quickly, child/elderly/pets, anyone really, the door could knock them over, possibly causing more serious bodily harm from the tires or other parts of the vehicle since it continues to move.
The vehicle repeatedly displays βDriver Assist Camera Blocked / Disabledβ upon startup and while driving, even when the windshield is clean and weather conditions are clear. When this occurs, the lane departure warning system becomes disabled while driving. This happens without driver input and results in loss of lane safety alerts. Additionally, the driverβs side power window intermittently stops moving while the switch is being held in the up or down position. The window does not complete its movement unless the switch is released and pressed again. There is no obstruction present. Safety risk: Unexpected loss of lane departure warning while driving increases crash risk, especially at highway speeds or at night. A driverβs window that stops responding can cause distraction and prevent timely closure in traffic or adverse weather. Warning messages: βDriver Assist Camera Blocked / Disabledβ Frequency: Intermittent but recurring Mileage at first occurrence: 191

The problem: You can drive fast or slow and at any given moment, the car display all alarms like the adaptive cruise control, emergency brake, engine. All the lights start to blink inside the car, there is a beep with those lights. The steering wheel does not move, gets locked, the brakes get locked (you cannot move the steer wheel or press the brakes), the engine starts to make a rattling sound and the car starts to bounce, then slowly the car starts shutting down until its off. This problem has been happening since I bought the car brand new on 2018. At the beginning, the car was inside the dealership ever so often to try to fix that problem. That recall was presented in other VIN numbers but not mine, but the dealer decided to "so call" fix it. The problem stopped happening for a while, then started again. It went back to the dealership in Schaumburg Mitsubishi. They told me without a receipt or notice, they fix it, again. When the dealership closed, I didnt know where to go or what to do. The case number left in Mitsubishi motors was only available for a year, so when I called again, I had to make a new case but there was no dealer no more. When I went to Gregory Mitsubishi, I explained the problem but they couldnt find anything and they couldnt get any information about my history because Schaumburg Mitsubishi was gone. I know how to manage the problem, I just have to move back to a safe spot quickly, sometimes doing unsafe maneuvers, so I wont cause an accident. This year so far, has happened another 4-5 times and I dont know what to do, because Jidd Mitsubishi dont want to do anything about it.
While parked, ASC system service required indicator light came on. Car was then disabled and unable to be started for approximately 1-2 hours. That happened twice in 2023. While driving on the highway in 2025, ASC system service required, abs system service required, four wheel drive system service required, power steering system service required indicator lights all came on and total loss of power steering while driving approximately 40-50mph.

The basics
How to read this data
Complaints, recalls, investigations β hereβs what each number actually tells you about a used Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross, in plain English.
What is an NHTSA Complaint?
An NHTSA safety complaint is a report filed directly by a vehicle owner or driver describing a safety-related issue. Anyone can submit a complaint at NHTSA.gov. The number of complaints is a signal of how common a problem is β but complaints per model-year matter more than raw totals, since popular vehicles naturally receive more reports. The Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross has 59 complaints on record across 9 model years.
What is a Safety Recall?
A safety recall is a mandatory campaign issued by NHTSA when a vehicle component poses an unreasonable risk to safety or does not comply with federal motor vehicle safety standards. Unlike complaints (which are owner-reported), recalls are formally investigated and confirmed by regulators. Manufacturers must fix recalled vehicles free of charge. The Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross has 3 recall campaigns in the NHTSA database.
What Are Crash Complaints?
Crash complaints are NHTSA filings where the owner indicates a crash occurred as part of the incident. 9 of the Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross's 59 complaints involved a crash. This metric is particularly important because it indicates how often defects resulted in actual collisions β a key safety signal beyond general reliability.
How Is the Reliability Verdict Calculated?
The reliability verdict (Average) is generated by analyzing the vehicle's total complaints, recall history, crash complaint ratio, fire complaint ratio, and top component failures relative to class averages. This verdict gives buyers a quick interpretation before they review year-level details and VIN-level history. It should be treated as one decision input, not a substitute for a VIN-specific report.
Why Do Newer Years Have Fewer Complaints?
Newer model years appear to have fewer complaints because there has been less time for owners to file them. Complaints accumulate over years of ownership. A 2020 model year vehicle will typically show fewer complaints than a 2015 model year even if it is less reliable β simply because fewer owners have had time to report issues. Focus on complaints per year of market presence when comparing across model years.
Fleet Data vs. Individual VIN
Everything on this page reflects aggregated data across all Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross vehicles on the road β not any specific car. Two Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross vehicles of the same year can have very different histories: one may have been in three accidents and have an open recall; another may be clean. A VIN check gives you the individual car's history: accidents, title brands, odometer records, service history, and real-time recall status.
What Are NHTSA Investigations?
When NHTSA receives a pattern of related safety complaints, it opens a formal investigation. A Preliminary Evaluation (PE) is the first stage β NHTSA determines if a safety defect may exist. If evidence is strong, it escalates to an Engineering Analysis (EA), which can result in a mandatory recall. The Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross has 0 investigations on record (0 active). Investigations listed above may have already led to the recalls shown on this page.
