What the complaint data suggests

Below Average
Editorial interpretation of NHTSA public complaint data. Source: nhtsa.gov. Complaints are owner-submitted and do not confirm a defect. Methodology

Data engine & NHTSA methodology by Eduard Batog, Co-founder & Data Engineer. How we calculate this.

Based on NHTSA complaint data, the 2000 Mercury Mystique shows a low-confidence pattern of structural complaints (18) and visibility issues (11). Buyers should be aware of potential fuel system and air bag problems. Source: NHTSA owner complaints and recall records.

Key findings
  • Structure received 18 complaints, the highest count.
  • Visibility had 11 complaints, the second most.
  • Engine and engine cooling had 8 complaints.
Top concerns
  • FUEL SYSTEM issues may pose fire or leak risks.
  • AIR BAGS may fail to deploy properly.
  • ELECTRICAL SYSTEM problems could cause intermittent failures.
Worst years

The 2000 model year shows elevated complaints in structure and visibility.

Best years

No other years are available for comparison; the 2000 model year stands alone.

What to check before buying used
  • Inspect the fuel system for leaks or damage.
  • Verify all open recalls at nhtsa.gov/recalls.
  • Request service records for reported components.
  • Have a mechanic inspect before purchase.
Data note: NHTSA complaints are consumer-submitted and do not confirm a manufacturing defect. Low confidence due to small sample size (65 complaints).

TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2000 MERCURY MYSTIQUE. THE CONTACT EXPERIENCED ENGINE HESITATION, LOSS OF POWER, AND SURGING IN HER VEHICLE. SHE WOULD LOSE ALL POWER AND HAVE TO WAIT A COUPLE OF MINUTES BEFORE THE VEHICLE WOULD RESTART. THE CONTACT COULD ONLY DRIVE FIVE MILES BEFORE THE FAILURE RECURRED. THE FAILURE OCCURRED WHEN THE ENGINE WAS WARM OR HOT. SHE TOOK THE VEHICLE TO A LOCAL GARAGE AND THEY STATED THAT THE FUEL PUMP WAS DEFECTIVE. THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 56,000 AND FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 55,600.

INSTRUMENT DASH PANEL COVER IS , AND HAS CONTINUED TO PEEL BACK AT THE DEFROST VENTS AT THE WINDSHIELD SINCE 2003. IT APPEARS THE GLUE HAD BEGUN TO FAIL. EACH TIME I BROUGHT MY CAR IN FOR SERVICE MY CONCERNS AND COMPLAINT OF THE DASH BOARD WERE LARGELY IGNORED. SIMPLY BLOWN OFF TO SAY IT WAS NOT COVERED UNDER THE WARRANTY. WHEN ASKED IF THERE HAD BEEN ANY RECALL OR WIDESPREAD COMPLAINTS I WAS TOLD NO TO BOTH QUESTIONS. IT WAS ONLY RECENTLY I DISCOVERED ON A GOVERNMENT RECALL SITE THERE HAD ACTUALLY BEEN A CUSTOMER SERVICE ACTION OFFERED TO ADDRESS THIS PROBLEM. I DID NOT RECEIVE THIS NOTIFICATION. I AM VERY DISSATISFIED TO LEARN THAT NOT ONLY WASN'T I NOTIFIED OF THIS OFFER, MY DIRECT QUESTIONS TOWARDS THIS CONCERN PRODUCED ANSWERS THAT WERE INACCURATE. THIS SITUATION TROUBLES ME DEEPLY AS I PREPARE FOR THE PURCHASE OF MY NEXT NEW CAR. I THINK. IS THIS THE HONESTY ( OR SHOULD I SAY LACK OF HONESTY FROM A CAR MANUFACTURER ) AS I DECIDE WHAT MANUFACTURERS VEHICLE AND SERVICE WILL BEST SATISFY MY EXPECTATIONS AS A NEW CAR CONSUMER. MY FAMILIES ARE LOYAL CUSTOMERS AND CURRENT OWNERS OF FORD, LINCOLN, MERCURY PRODUCTS. THESE INCLUDE LINCOLN CONTINENTAL, FORD EXPLORER, MERCURY MYSTIQUE , AND FORD TAURUS. I WAS LEANING TOWARDS THE PURCHASE OF THE 2009 MERCURY MARINER. IN LIGHT OF MY CURRENT FINDINGS I'M NOT SO SURE I WILL STILL CHOOSE ONE OF YOUR VEHICLES. HAVING RELATIVES WHO ARE CURRENTLY LONG TIME EMPLOYEES OF F,L,M, AS WELL AS RETIRED FAMILY MEMBERS FROM F,L,MERC. I KNOW THAT THEY TOO ARE CONSIDERING PURCHASE OF NEW VEHICLES ALSO IN THE NEAR FUTURE. I REALLY EXPECT A RESPONSE FROM SOMEONE IN HELPING ME RESOLVE THE ISSUE I'M HAVING. DISSATISFIED CONSUMER. The basics

How to read this data

Complaints, recalls, investigations — here’s what each number actually tells you about a used Mercury Mystique, in plain English.

01

What is an NHTSA Complaint?

An NHTSA safety complaint is a report filed directly by a vehicle owner or driver describing a safety-related issue. Anyone can submit a complaint at NHTSA.gov. The number of complaints is a signal of how common a problem is — but complaints per model-year matter more than raw totals, since popular vehicles naturally receive more reports. The Mercury Mystique has 65 complaints on record across 1 model years.

02

What is a Safety Recall?

A safety recall is a mandatory campaign issued by NHTSA when a vehicle component poses an unreasonable risk to safety or does not comply with federal motor vehicle safety standards. Unlike complaints (which are owner-reported), recalls are formally investigated and confirmed by regulators. Manufacturers must fix recalled vehicles free of charge. The Mercury Mystique has 5 recall campaigns in the NHTSA database.

03

What Are Crash Complaints?

Crash complaints are NHTSA filings where the owner indicates a crash occurred as part of the incident. 8 of the Mercury Mystique's 65 complaints involved a crash. This metric is particularly important because it indicates how often defects resulted in actual collisions — a key safety signal beyond general reliability.

04

How Is the Reliability Verdict Calculated?

The reliability verdict (Below Average) is generated by analyzing the vehicle's total complaints, recall history, crash complaint ratio, fire complaint ratio, and top component failures relative to class averages. This verdict gives buyers a quick interpretation before they review year-level details and VIN-level history. It should be treated as one decision input, not a substitute for a VIN-specific report.

05

Why Do Newer Years Have Fewer Complaints?

Newer model years appear to have fewer complaints because there has been less time for owners to file them. Complaints accumulate over years of ownership. A 2020 model year vehicle will typically show fewer complaints than a 2015 model year even if it is less reliable — simply because fewer owners have had time to report issues. Focus on complaints per year of market presence when comparing across model years.

06

Fleet Data vs. Individual VIN

Everything on this page reflects aggregated data across all Mercury Mystique vehicles on the road — not any specific car. Two Mercury Mystique vehicles of the same year can have very different histories: one may have been in three accidents and have an open recall; another may be clean. A VIN check gives you the individual car's history: accidents, title brands, odometer records, service history, and real-time recall status.

07

What Are NHTSA Investigations?

When NHTSA receives a pattern of related safety complaints, it opens a formal investigation. A Preliminary Evaluation (PE) is the first stage — NHTSA determines if a safety defect may exist. If evidence is strong, it escalates to an Engineering Analysis (EA), which can result in a mandatory recall. The Mercury Mystique has 0 investigations on record (0 active). Investigations listed above may have already led to the recalls shown on this page.
