The seat belts have never retracted properly. Over the years they have become much worse. This is a huge safety concern.
THIS 2008 HONDA S2000 HAD 65,000 MILES ON IT WHEN THE ENGINE FROZE AND WOULD NOT START. THE OWNER WAS SHOPPING AND WHEN SHE RETURNED THE CAR WOULD NOT START. SHE WAS TOLD BY THE REPAIR SHOPS THAT THE ENGINE WAS SHOT AND NEEDS TO BE REPLACED. THIS PROBLEM IS BEGINNING TO SHOW UP ACCORDING TO HONDA REPAIR SHOPS.
INTERMITTENT POWER STEERING AT START UP AND WHILE DRIVING
airbag light on , no accident .will take to Honda dealer soon wondered if this is related to tatka airbag problems.
A SLIT, ABOUT 1" LONG, APPEARED IN THE CONVERTIBLE TOP REAR QUARTERPANEL. YESTERDAY, I NOTICED ON THE OTHER SIDE OF THE CAR, IN THE EXACT SAME SPOT, AN INDENTATION, ABOUT TO BECOME ANOTHER SLIT. HONDA DEALER AND CUSTOMER COMPLAINT BOTH NOTIFIED. THEY HAVE NOTHING ON FILE ABOUT THIS ISSUE AND OFFERED NO SOLUTIONS. THERE OBVIOUSLY IS AN ISSUE WITH THE RETRACTION MECHANISM DESIGN OR FUNCTION. WEAR ON A RETRACTED CONVERTIBLE TOP , TO THE POINT OF PENETRATION, IS UNACCEPTABLE. *TR
THE CONVERTIBLE TOP ON MY HONDA S2000 HAS RIPPED FOR THE SECOND TIME. THE FIRST TIME THE TOP WAS REPLACED UNDER WARRANTY. UNDER INDEPENDENT EXAMINATION THE TOP WAS FOUND TO HAVE AN ENGINEERING DEFECT WHERE THE FABRIC TOP RUBS AGAINST A SHARP METAL COMPONENT OF THE TOP FRAME CAUSING A TEAR. *TR
MY 2006 HONDA S-2000 HAS HAD AN ONGOING ISSUE WITH HIGH COLD START IDLE THAT CAN EXCEED 2500 RPM MAKING THE VEHICLE DANGEROUS TO OPERATE UNTIL SUFFICIENT TIME HAS ELAPSED FOR THE ENGINE TO WARM UP. AFTER NUMEROUS COMPLAINTS TO HONDA OF NORTH AMERICA CUSTOMER SERVICE, HONDA ARRANGED FOR ME TO DROP THE VEHICLE OFF AT A LOCAL HONDA DEALER TO REPAIR THE ISSUE. AFTER THREE DAYS WITH THE VEHICLE IN THEIR POSSESSION, HONDA NOW STATES THAT; THE IDLE SPEED FOR THE VEHICLE IS NORMAL AND NO DEFECTS COULD BE FOUND IN THE CAR. THEY FURTHER STATE THAT THE VEHICLE IS ONLY SAFE TO OPERATE IF GIVEN SUFFICIENT TIME TO WARM UP. *TR
TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2006 HONDA S2000. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE METAL LINK ON THE CONVERTIBLE TOP WAS PLACED DIRECTLY OVER HIS SKULL. IN THE EVENT OF A CRASH, HIS HEAD WOULD STRIKE THE METAL LINK AND CAUSE INJURIES. THE MANUFACTURER ADVISED THE CONTACT TO TAKE THE VEHICLE TO THE DEALER TO CHECK IF THE ISSUE WAS DUE TO A MANUFACTURER DEFECT. THE CONTACT FEELS THAT THIS IS A SAFETY HAZARD AND WANTS THE MANUFACTURER TO PROVIDE A HARD TOP. THE CURRENT AND FAILURE MILEAGES WERE 16,000. THE CONVERTIBLE TOP HAS A PROTRUDING METAL JOINT AND OTHER UNSHIELDED METAL PIECES. UPDATED 07/21/09.*JB
REAR SHOCK ABSORBER LEAK RESULTING IN COMPONENT FAILURE AND UNSAFE HANDLING AND BRAKING. *TR
DEER RAN OUT I SWERVED HIT A TREE HEAD ON. *TR
TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2006 HONDA S2000. WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 20 MPH, THE CONTACT SWERVED TO AVOID A DEER AND CRASHED INTO A TREE. THE FRONT AIR BAGS FAILED TO DEPLOY. THE INSURANCE COMPANY STATED THAT THE VEHICLE MUST BE TRAVELING AT 35 MPH FOR THE FRONT AIR BAGS TO DEPLOY. THE CONTACT SUSTAINED INJURIES TO HIS NECK AND BACK. THE VEHICLE IS AT THE BODY SHOP FOR REPAIR. THE CURRENT AND FAILURE MILEAGES WERE 17,764.
MECHANICAL CLIP THAT HOLDS FLOOR MAT IN PLACE ON FLOOR BENDS AND DOES NOT HOLD THE FLOOR MAT IN PLACE. THIS CAUSES THE FLOOR MAT TO BECOME LODGED UNDERNEATH THE CLUTCH, BRAKE AND ACCELERATION PEDAL. CAR IS STILL UNDER WARRANTY AND THE DEALER FIXED THIS WITH NO QUESTION. HOWEVER, THE DESIGN OF THE PART TENDS TO BE WEAK AND WILL MOST LIKELY BEND AGAIN. *JB
WHEN CAR WAS 8 MONTHS OLD WITH ABOUT 25,000 MILES ON IT, IT BEGAN STALLING. ONLY PREMIUM SHELL GASOLINE WAS EVER PUT IN THIS CAR. INJECTOR CLEANER WAS PUT IN A FEW TIMES WITH NO RESULTS. CAR WAS TAKEN INTO ONE DEALERSHIP TO BE TOLD FIRST THAT "SHE MUST NOT BE PUSHING THE CLUTCH IN ALL THE WAY" AT WHICH TIME THEY DID AN EXTENSIVE TESTING OF THE CLUTCH. WE HAD BOTH TOLD THEM THIS WAS NOT CLUTCH RELATED AS THE CAR WOULD ALSO DIE IN NEUTRAL. SO THEN THEY CAME TO THE CONCLUSION THAT IT MUST HAVE BEEN BAD GAS, AT WHICH TIME THEY GAVE IT BACK. THE SECOND TIME THEY DECIDED IT WAS BENT VALVES, WHICH "COULD ONLY HAVE BEEN CAUSED BY DRIVER DOWNSHIFTING". THIS IS NOT THE CASE, BUT WAS STILL TOLD IT WOULD COST $2600.00 TO FIX, BECAUSE HONDA WOULD NOT WARRANTY IT. SO, I ATTEMPTED TO TAKE IT TO ANOTHER DEALER WHO AFTER WAITING (NOT ON PEOPLE IN FRONT OF ME, JUST WAITING FOR SOMEONE TO HELP ME)15 MINUTES, AND HAVING DRIVEN 15 MILES ON MY LUNCH HOUR, I WAS RUDELY APPROACHED AND HATEFULLY ASKED "WHAT I WAS THERE FOR". AFTER EXPLAINING THE SITUATION WITH THE CAR, HE SAID "OH, OKAY SO WE'RE TEST THE VALVES AGAIN?" AND "THERE WILL BE AN $85.00 DIAGNOSIS FEE". AT WHICH TIME I SAID FORGET IT AND WALKED OUT. I CALLED HONDA CORPORATION THIS MORNING JUST TO EXPLAIN IT ALL OVER TO THEM AND THEN ASKED WHAT THEY COULD DO TO HELP, I WAS TOLD THEY CANNOT MAKE A DEALERSHIP DO ANYTHING. THERE IS A RECALL FOR HONDA ENGINES BUT I WAS TOLD THAT THE ENGINE IN THE S2000 DOES NOT HAVE THE SAME FUEL DELIVERY SYSTEM SO IT DOESN'T APPLY, EVEN THOUGH THE CAR HAS THE SAME SYMPTOMS. IT STALLS SEVERAL TIMES A DAY AND THIS HAS BEEN GOING ON FOR A COUPLE OF MONTHS. ABSOLUTELY NOTHING HAS BEEN DONE TO FIX THE PROBLEM. *TR
I HAD MY MASTER CYLINDER REPLACED WHEN MY CAR WAS AT 40,000 MILES IN THE CLUTCH. NOW AT 68,777 MILES THE CLUTCH HAS SOMETHING WRONG BUT STILL SHIFTS INTO GEAR AT THIS POINT. NOW THEY ARE GUESSING THAT THE CLUTCH FORK IS WEARING OUT WHICH IS OVER $2,000.00 TO REPLACE. I WAS ALSO TOLD BY ANOTHER MECHANIC THAT MY MASTER CYLINDER DOESN'T LOOK LIKE A HONDA PART. I CAN'T AFFORD TO HAVE TO HAVE THIS REPLACED RIGHT NOW SO I WAS TOLD I COULD DRIVE IT BY HONDA. IF IT GOES OUT ON THE FREEWAY I WON'T BE ABLE TO SHIFT GEARS. MY CAR IS NOT BEEN DRIVING HARD AND IT'S WELL TAKEN CARE OF AND SERVICED PROPERLY ALONG WITH BEING GARAGED ALWAYS. I PUT AROUND 8,000 MILES A YEAR ON IT AND I KNOW HOW TO DRIVE IT WELL. I DON'T RACE IT OR SPEED SHIFT EVER. I FEEL THAT THIS CAR HAS FAULTY PARTS IN THE CLUTCH AND PLATES ALONG WITH THE MASTER CYLINDER. I'M NOT A MECHANIC BUT I DO KNOW A LITTLE ABOUT CARS AND DID MY RESEARCH ON HONDA'S. THEY ARE SUPPOSE TO HAVE LONG TIME RUNNING CARS. I EVEN TOOK OUT A 7 YEAR WARRANTY SO I DIDN'T HAVE TO PAY SO MUCH OUT OF POCKET. IF IT WAS DIFFERENT THINGS HAPPENING I WOULDN'T QUESTION IT BUT THIS IS ALL TRANSMISSION THINGS AND I'M VERY WORRIED THAT THEY WERE FAULTY TO BEGIN WITH. WHEN I PRESS THE CLUTCH DOWN IT SOMETIMES CATCHES AT THE TOP PART. IF THAT DOESN'T ENGAGE I CAN'T SLOW DOWN OR STOP. *TR
TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2007 HONDA SHADOW SPIRIT. WHILE DRIVING 65 MPH, THE VEHICLE SHOOK THEN SHUT OFF WITHOUT WARNING. THE CONTACT STATED THAT SHE HAD TO WAIT TEN MINUTES BEFORE SHE WAS ABLE TO RESTART IT. THE DEALER WAS UNABLE TO DIAGNOSE THE FAILURE. APPROXIMATELY A WEEK LATER THE FAILURE OCCURRED AGAIN. AS OF MAY 5, 2008, THE DEALER HAD NOT INSPECTED THE VEHICLE. THE FAILURE AND CURRENT MILEAGES WERE 600.
TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2007 HONDA S2000. WHILE DRIVING 35 MPH, THE VEHICLE BEGAN TO SPIN WHEN THE BRAKE PEDAL WAS DEPRESSED. THE VEHICLE SPUN INTO A DITCH IN NORMAL ROAD CONDITIONS. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO THE CONTACT'S RESIDENCE. THE DEALER STATED THAT THE ROTOR SPLIT IN HALF AND CAUSED THE FAILURE. NO REPAIRS WERE MADE. THE CURRENT AND FAILURE MILEAGES WERE 113.
THIS 2005 HONDA S2K LOWER CONTROL ARM BROKE AND THEN BENT THE TIE ROD AT A 45 DEGREE ANGLE AND WHICH SENT THE TIRE UNDER THE UNIBODY OF THE CAR. WHICH FOR A REAR WHEEL DRIVE CAR IS VERY BAD. YOU WILL HAVE NO CONTROL OF THE CAR IN THIS SCENARIO.
THE LEFT SEAT ADJUSTMENT RAIL FOR THE DRIVER'S SEAT CRACKED ALL THE WAY ACROSS IMMEDIATELY BEHIND THE BOLT HOLDING THE FORWARD END OF THE RAIL TO THE FLOOR. THIS ALLOWED THE DRIVERS SEAT TO ROCK BACK AND TO THE RIGHT. THE FAILURE OCCURRED WHILE THE CAR WAS PARKED. I HAD ADJUSTED THE SEAT FORWARD TO MY USUAL DRIVING POSITION, AND PUSHED BACKWARD ON THE SEAT TO CHECK THAT THE ADJUSTER WAS LOCKED. WHEN I DID THAT, THE SEAT BRACKET BROKE LOOSE AND THE SEAT TILTED BACK AND TO THE RIGHT. I HAVE REPLACED THE BROKEN RAIL, HONDA PART NUMBER 81660-S2A-A02. I PREVIOUSLY REPLACED THE RIGHT SIDE DRIVER'S SEAT RAIL (81670-S2A-A02) WHEN THE ADJUSTMENT MECHANISM JAMMED, IN JANUARY2011. THAT PART IS NO LONGER AVAILABLE NEW FROM HONDA. ALL BOLTS WERE REINSTALLED ACCORDING TO TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS IN THE HONDA S2000 FACTORY SERVICE MANUAL.
SATURDAY AUGUST 25 WAS DRIVING MY CAR FROM BRANFORD CT TO GUILFORD CT THRU NORTH BRANFORD. DROVE FOR AROUND 10 MINUTES CAME TO A STOP LIGHT WITH A LINE OF TRAFFIC. SLOWED TO A STOP AND PUT THE CAR IN NEUTRAL. THE CAR TURNED OFF AND WOULD NOT START. TOWED BY AAA TO MY MECHANIC TO FIND OUT WHY IT WOULD NOT START. HE CALLED AND STATED HE COULD NOT TURN THE ENGINE OVER. TRIED SEVERAL DIFFERENT THINGS AND THE MOTOR WOULD NOT CRANK OVER EVEN WITH A BAR. HE STATED THE ENGINE SEIZED.
I HAVE A 2005 HONDA S2000 THAT HAS A SAFETY PROBLEM. THE MAINTENANCE LIGHT HAS COME ON & HAS A INTERNAL ERROR COMING FROM MY OBS2 READER. THE CAR ACTS UP LIKE YOU TURNED THE KEY OFF & ON WHEN DRIVING. IF THEY ARE A RECALL I HAVE NOT BEEN NOTIFIED OF ONE. I HAVE ONLY HAD THE CAR 9 MONTHS & IT STARTED AT 6 MONTHS. THE CAR PROBLEM SEEM TO HAVE EFFECTED THE ACCELERATION AT LOW RPMS

๐ Understanding This Data
What is an NHTSA Complaint?
An NHTSA safety complaint is a report filed directly by a vehicle owner or driver describing a safety-related issue. Anyone can submit a complaint at NHTSA.gov. The number of complaints is a signal of how common a problem is โ but complaints per model-year matter more than raw totals, since popular vehicles naturally receive more reports. The Honda S2000 has 162 complaints on record across 10 model years.
What is a Safety Recall?
A safety recall is a mandatory campaign issued by NHTSA when a vehicle component poses an unreasonable risk to safety or does not comply with federal motor vehicle safety standards. Unlike complaints (which are owner-reported), recalls are formally investigated and confirmed by regulators. Manufacturers must fix recalled vehicles free of charge. The Honda S2000 has 6 recall campaigns in the NHTSA database.
What Are Crash Complaints?
Crash complaints are NHTSA filings where the owner indicates a crash occurred as part of the incident. 25 of the Honda S2000's 162 complaints involved a crash. This metric is particularly important because it indicates how often defects resulted in actual collisions โ a key safety signal beyond general reliability.
How Is the Reliability Verdict Calculated?
The reliability verdict (Poor) is generated by analyzing the vehicle's total complaints, recall history, crash complaint ratio, fire complaint ratio, and top component failures relative to class averages. This verdict gives buyers a quick interpretation before they review year-level details and VIN-level history. It should be treated as one decision input, not a substitute for a VIN-specific report.
Why Do Newer Years Have Fewer Complaints?
Newer model years appear to have fewer complaints because there has been less time for owners to file them. Complaints accumulate over years of ownership. A 2020 model year vehicle will typically show fewer complaints than a 2015 model year even if it is less reliable โ simply because fewer owners have had time to report issues. Focus on complaints per year of market presence when comparing across model years.
Fleet Data vs. Individual VIN
Everything on this page reflects aggregated data across all Honda S2000 vehicles on the road โ not any specific car. Two Honda S2000 vehicles of the same year can have very different histories: one may have been in three accidents and have an open recall; another may be clean. A VIN check gives you the individual car's history: accidents, title brands, odometer records, service history, and real-time recall status.
What Are NHTSA Investigations?
When NHTSA receives a pattern of related safety complaints, it opens a formal investigation. A Preliminary Evaluation (PE) is the first stage โ NHTSA determines if a safety defect may exist. If evidence is strong, it escalates to an Engineering Analysis (EA), which can result in a mandatory recall. The Honda S2000 has 0 investigations on record (0 active). Investigations listed above may have already led to the recalls shown on this page.
