Crash test ratings
NHTSA NCAP crash test ratings
New Car Assessment ProgramNCAP crash tests measure how well a vehicle protects occupants in controlled frontal crash, side crash, and rollover scenarios. Stars are awarded per category (5 = safest). These laboratory results are independent of owner complaints and are performed by NHTSA engineers on new production vehicles.
NCAP crash test ratings for this model are not yet loaded or this vehicle was not tested in the years analyzed. NHTSA tests a subset of new vehicles each year. Check nhtsa.gov/ratings directly for the latest results.

Safety recall By honda for contamination of fuel system bought used as in motorcycle from powersports dealership, knowing of the recall asked if dealership completed recall, dealer said yes could not provide documentation of completing said recall. With that there was an all stop-No sale of the model with contamination of fuel system recall, dealer chose to ignore warning and all stop no sale my NHSTA and manufacture. was riding motorcycle in moderate traffic when abruptly the rear wheel locked up around 35-45mph caused me to control bike with rear wheel locked up about 50ft almost causing a car to hit me from behind, untill I made it to the shoulder of the road, no warning lights on system for fuel pump issue and bike would continuously stall out on occasion causing un-necessary wear on drivetrain and tires. Only after taking bike to a different dealership did they look into seeing if the recall was done, from they're records and information the recall was never done, bike went into shop July 24 2024 and have been awaiting call back for additional work to be complete, such as tires due to fuel pump going out, and fork seals due to weight of motorcycle lunging forward when rear wheel was locked up.
Bike encounters momentary loss of power like running out of fuel. happens at all speeds and occasionally dies while taking off from a stop. Bike has been at the shop 4 times totaling over 150 days has had the fuel filter recall preformed twice, fuel pump replaced once and the problem has still not been resolved. Does not throw CEL problem has been ongoing since 7/31/21 and Honda can t fix problem
ENGINE STALL - ENGINE CHOCKING IN THE MIDDLE OF crossroads. I was luck enough the car driver stopped the car before crashed into me. I brought 2 times the motorcycle to the dealer. First time they said there was a problem with a cylinder and they changed spark plug and injectors. Second time ( motorcycle was at the shop for 32 days ) Honda manufacture technicians said the motorcycle was fine to ride. For a reason I don`t know they don't want address this problem. In February 2021 there was a recall for my motorcycle model ( 2019 Africa twin )

GAS TANK DEVELOPS WHITE SLUDGE PARTICLES WHICH APPEAR TO SLUFF OFF OF THE WELDS. THESE SLUDGE PARTICLES PLUGGED UP THE FUEL FILTER CAUSING LOSS OF POWER WHILE ON THE ROAD. LOSS OF POWER HAPPENED WHILE IN MOTION ON THE HIGHWAY IN TRAFFIC CAUSING A DANGEROUS SITUATION.
I EXPERIENCE HESITATION AND POWER LOSS WHEN ACCELERATING TO PASS AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS. A VERY DANGEROUS SITUATION RESULTS, HAVING TO QUICKLY DECELERATE AND MANEUVER TO THE ROADSIDE. THIS HAPPENED ON THREE DIFFERENT OCCASIONS OVER THE PAST TWO MONTHS.
MATERIAL IS FLAKING OFF THE WELD SEAMS OF THE FUEL TANK AND CLOGGING THE FILTER. I HAD NOT EXPERIENCED PERFORMANCE ISSUES YET, BUT OTHER HAVE REPORTED THE FILTER BECOMING COMPLETELY CLOGGED, STALLING THE ENGINE. I REMOVED THE FILTER, CLEANED IT AND REINSTALLED. THERE IS STILL MORE MATERIAL ON THE WELD SEAMS THAT COULD FLAKE OFF. THE FLAKES IN THE DRAIN PAN IN THE ATTACHED PHOTO CAME FROM THE TANK. THE OTHER PHOTOS ARE OF THE INSIDE OF THE TANK AND THE FUEL FILTER.
THE BIKE STARTS STALLING WHILE IT IS ON THROTTLE. FURTHER INVESTIGATION LEADS TO FINDING THAT SOME UNKOWN RESIDUE FALLS APART FROM WITHIN THE FUEL TANK WELDING CLOGGING THE FUEL PUMP FILTER. I HAVE FOUND PLENTY OTHER RIDER WITH THE EXACT SAME ISSUE.
AFRICA TWIN ADVENTURE SPORT WOULD SOUND LIKE IT HAD A MISFIRE, AND WHEN THE THROTTLE IS TWISTED THE BIKE WILL HESITATE AND MAKE A POPPING SOUND. I HAVE TRIED DIFFERENT OCTANE RATINGS AND I'M STILL HAVING THE ISSUE REGARDLESS. WHEN I NEED TO ACCELERATE THE BIKE HESITATES AND MAKES A POPPING SOUND. THE ISSUE OCCURS AT LEAST ONCE EVERY RIDE AND IT IS VERY ANNOYING. PURCHASED THE AFRICA TWIN NEW AND I'M HAVING ISSUES AT 2,000 MILES. FOR THE POPPING OR HESITATION TO OCCUR IT CAN HAPPEN AT STAND STILL OR ON THE MOVE. THERE IS NO WARNING TO WHEN THE ISSUE WILL HAPPEN. WHETHER AT SPEED OR AT A STAND STILL WHEN THE THROTTLE IS TWISTED THE BIKE WILL POP AND HESITATE. I BELIEVE THIS IS THE ISSUE OF HONDA'S FUEL SYSTEM. MANY OWNERS ARE EXPERIENCING THIS SAME ISSUE. ON THE INNER LINING OF THE FUEL TANK WHITE FLAKES COME OFF THE TANK AND MIX WITH THE FUEL, THEN CREATING AN ISSUE FOR THE FUEL PUMP. SOUNDS LIKE THE BIKE IS BEING STARVED OF FUEL, AND I AM SUSPECTING IT IS THIS EXACT ISSUE. *TR
THIS IS MY SECOND FILING OF A COMPLAINT FOR THE SAME REASON/ISSUE. I FILED THE FIRST COMPLAINT FEBRUARY 8, 2020 NHTSA ID NUMBER: 11307903. THE FIRST OCCURRENCE OF THE ISSUE WAS IN NOVEMBER 2019 WITH 3,306 MILES ON THE ODOMETER. THE SECOND INCIDENT WAS MARCH 2020 WITH 5,226 MILES ON THE ODOMETER. REMEDY FROM HONDA WAS THE SAME AS THE PREVIOUS REMEDY OF NOVEMBER 2019. *TR
ON GOING FUEL TANK CONTAMINATION CAUSING G ENGINE TO QUITE. ALREADY HAD TANK AND PUMP REPLACED O WARRANTY STILL HAVE PROBLEM. UNSAFE DUE TO ENGINE DIEING. VEHICLE IN MOTION ENGINE CUTS OUT IN TRAFFIC. 2019 HONDA AFRICA TWIN ADVENTURE SPORT. *TR
RIDING TWO UP, PULLED OUT INTO HIGHWAY TRAFFIC AND MOTOR CUT OUT. HAPPEN TWICE, ONE TIME ON THE FREEWAY WAS ACCELERATING TO THE SPEED LIMIT AND IT CUT OUT VERY DANGEROUS PEOPLE BEHIND ME HAD TO HIT THE BRAKES SO THEY WOULD NOT REAR END ME. I TOOK IT TO THE DEALER IMMEDIATELY IN TUCSON ARIZONA. AND THEN TOOK IT TO CHAPARRAL MOTOR SPORTS SAN BERNARDINO CALIFORNIA WHERE IT IS RESIDING AT THE MOMENT.THE HONDA TECHNICIAN [XXX] ,CONTACTED [XXX] HONDA REP INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6). *TR
LATELY DIDN'T HAVE THE SAME POWER,AND DELAY WHEN YOU OPEN THE THROTTLE.WHEN RIDING THE MOTOCYCLE ,THE MOTOR TURNS OFF 25MPH AND ABOVE MULTIPLE TIMES.DIFFERENT MILES PER DAY. I THOUGHT IT WAS ME DRIVER IT WAS NOT.I WENT ON A RIDE WITH 3 RIDERS 3/21/2020 305 MILES THE MOTOCYCLE MOTOR TURNED OF WHEN RIDING 4 TIMES THAT DAY. I CALLED THE DEALERSHIP TO PICK UP THE MOTOCYCLE FROM MY HOUSE. THA MOTOCYCLE IS VERY UNSAVE TO RIDE.IT HAPPENS ON CITY STREETS,HIGHWAY, ALL RIDING CONDITION.I WENT ON THE AFRICA TWIN 2018-2019 SERIES BIKES FORUMS.I AM NOT THE ONLY PERSON WITH THIS PROBLEM.
FOR THE 4TH TIME IN THE LAST YEAR MY BIKE HAS HAD FUEL DELIVERY CUT OUT AT HIGHWAY SPEED. THIS CAUSED A HUGE LOSS OF SPEED AND MOMENTUM, AND ALMOST LEAD TO ME BEING HIT BY A CAR. WHEN THIS HAPPENS THE BIKE LURCHES VIOLENTLY AND IS DIFFICULT TO CONTROL. IN EVERY CASE I HAVE HAD TO STOP ON THE SIDE OF THE ROAD AND SHUT THE BIKE DOWN. I SHIFT THE BIKE DOWN, WAIT AND RESTART. IN EVERY CASE THE BIKE HAS GONE A FEW MILES THEN IT HAPPENS AGAIN, REPEATEDLY. I BROUGHT THIS TO THE ATTENTION OF THE DEALER. THE FIRST TIME THEY SAID I PROBABLY HAD BAD FUEL, AND TO TRY AGAIN. IT HAPPENED AGAIN IN CANADA 2 MONTHS LATER. AND AGAIN ON THE WAY BACK TO MINNESOTA. THIS TIME HE DEALER CHECKED FOR COMPUTER ERRORS, SAID I HAD ONE AND THAT THEY CORRECTED IT. TODAY ON MN HWY 10 THE FUEL CUT OUT AT 70 MPH, ALMOST CAUSING MY WIFE TO RUN INTO ME. THIS IS UNSAFE AND UNPREDICTABLE, AND SHOULD NOT BE HAPPENING TO A ONE YEAR OLD BIKE. *TR
2019 HONDA AFRICA TWIN ADVENTURE SPORTS. POOR RUNNING CONDITIONS DUE TO CONTAMINATION IN THE TANK. THE VEHICLE WOULD SUDDENLY AND UNEXPECTEDLY LOSE POWER AND/OR STALL. THIS HAS RESULTED IN DANGEROUS CONDITIONS BECAUSE IT USUALLY HAPPENS IN TIMES OF ACCELERATION WHEN PASSING. ONE PARTICULARLY UNSAFE INCIDENT HAPPENED WHEN I HAD CROSSED THE DOUBLE YELLOW TO ATTEMPT A PASS AND THE VEHICLE LOST POWER RATHER THAN ACCELERATE. I ALSO HAD IT STALL AND DIE WHILE TRYING TO CLEAR AN INTERSECTION. I HONESTLY BELIEVE THAT THIS IS AN ISSUE THAT CAN RESULT IN A SERIOUS ACCIDENT RESULTING IN INJURY OR LOSS OF LIFE. HONDA'S "FIX" FOR THIS ISSUE IS QUESTIONABLE AT BEST. IT IS UNPROVEN AS TO WHETHER OR NOT IT IS A LONG TERM FIX AND RESULTS IN A LACK OF CONFIDENCE IN THE REPAIR. NOTE THE ATTACHED WORK ORDER "CLEANED THE TANK AS BEST I COULD WITH SCOTCH BRITE IN AN ATTEMPT TO CLEAN INSIDE OF FUEL TANK PER HONDA." NOBODY KNOWS IF THIS IS REALLY A FIX, INCLUDING HONDA. ONLY TIME WILL TELL AND THAT IS NOT A GOOD SOLUTION SINCE THE ISSUE CAN BE SO DANGEROUS. I FEEL HONDA NEEDS TO ADDRESS THIS THROUGH A PROPER AND PROVEN SAFETY RECALL. THE ISSUE IS MOST COMMON UNDER HARD ACCELERATION, BUT IT HAS ALSO EXHIBITED THIS BEHAVIOR UNDER NORMAL DRIVING, WHILE IDLING AT TRAFFIC LIGHTS, TURNING THROUGH AN INTERSECTION, ETC.

The basics
How to read this data
Complaints, recalls, investigations — here’s what each number actually tells you about a used Honda Crf1000, in plain English.
What is an NHTSA Complaint?
An NHTSA safety complaint is a report filed directly by a vehicle owner or driver describing a safety-related issue. Anyone can submit a complaint at NHTSA.gov. The number of complaints is a signal of how common a problem is — but complaints per model-year matter more than raw totals, since popular vehicles naturally receive more reports. The Honda Crf1000 has 17 complaints on record across 10 model years.
What is a Safety Recall?
A safety recall is a mandatory campaign issued by NHTSA when a vehicle component poses an unreasonable risk to safety or does not comply with federal motor vehicle safety standards. Unlike complaints (which are owner-reported), recalls are formally investigated and confirmed by regulators. Manufacturers must fix recalled vehicles free of charge. The Honda Crf1000 has 0 recall campaigns in the NHTSA database.
What Are Crash Complaints?
Crash complaints are NHTSA filings where the owner indicates a crash occurred as part of the incident. 0 of the Honda Crf1000's 17 complaints involved a crash. This metric is particularly important because it indicates how often defects resulted in actual collisions — a key safety signal beyond general reliability.
How Is the Reliability Verdict Calculated?
The reliability verdict (Good) is generated by analyzing the vehicle's total complaints, recall history, crash complaint ratio, fire complaint ratio, and top component failures relative to class averages. This verdict gives buyers a quick interpretation before they review year-level details and VIN-level history. It should be treated as one decision input, not a substitute for a VIN-specific report.
Why Do Newer Years Have Fewer Complaints?
Newer model years appear to have fewer complaints because there has been less time for owners to file them. Complaints accumulate over years of ownership. A 2020 model year vehicle will typically show fewer complaints than a 2015 model year even if it is less reliable — simply because fewer owners have had time to report issues. Focus on complaints per year of market presence when comparing across model years.
Fleet Data vs. Individual VIN
Everything on this page reflects aggregated data across all Honda Crf1000 vehicles on the road — not any specific car. Two Honda Crf1000 vehicles of the same year can have very different histories: one may have been in three accidents and have an open recall; another may be clean. A VIN check gives you the individual car's history: accidents, title brands, odometer records, service history, and real-time recall status.
What Are NHTSA Investigations?
When NHTSA receives a pattern of related safety complaints, it opens a formal investigation. A Preliminary Evaluation (PE) is the first stage — NHTSA determines if a safety defect may exist. If evidence is strong, it escalates to an Engineering Analysis (EA), which can result in a mandatory recall. The Honda Crf1000 has 0 investigations on record (0 active). Investigations listed above may have already led to the recalls shown on this page.
