Picked up the brand new F650 rollback tow truck from the dealer in Ohio. Traveling back to California with a Chevy Yukon 2WD on the bed. Approx 200 miles from the dealer the "Service Advance Trac warning appeared on the dash. The traction yellow light and wrench appeared on the dash. I was traveling down the highway. I called my dealer in California to ask what might be wrong. My dealer told me Ford was having a problem with the system and do not have a solution at the present time. however it should not be a performance issue. Continued on with the vehicle. As it turns out not only is it a performance issue its also a major safety issue. First noticed that when pulling away from a stop light vehicle struggled to get moving. Driving on flat ground the vehicle would get up to speed but slowly. The real danger is when braking. After you touch the brakes there is NO throttle response to get going again. The accelerator was as good as dead. This happened at 76 miles per hour on the highway. Coming down a mountain at 76 in the number 1 lane. Loaded semi truck behind me Speed limit 80 . At bottom highway sweeps left as goes back up hill. i had to press the brake due to a slower vehicle in front of me, I pressed the accelerator and no response. continued no response as the semi behind me was locking up his brakes to avoid rear rending me. vehicle reduced speed to 40mph still no response. I darted across the other lanes to shoulder of the road. no response from accelerator. Turned truck off and restarted. Truck sluggishly moved and got up to speed. this was a extremely dangerous situation. My solution to getting truck to California. If I could engage the Cruise control when the truck hit 32 mph i could drive truck with the cruise control using the + and - for speed. this would work. However if you hit the brake. Game over. No throttle response. This is the most dangerous truck I have ever driven.
The contact owns a 2021 Ford F-650. The contact stated while an employee was driving 65 MPH and depressing the accelerator pedal, the vehicle failed to respond as intended and stalled. The driver pulled to the right side of the road and waited for towing assistance. Several unknown warning lights were illuminated. The vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic, where it was diagnosed that the fuel pump had failed and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The contact related the failure to NHTSA Campaign Number: 25V455000(Fuel System, Gasoline). The manufacturer was notified of the failure but no assistance was provided. The contact was referred to the NHTSA Hotline for assistance. The failure mileage was 146,000.

My 2019 Ford F-650 Super Duty with 6.7L Diesel engine and under 40,000 miles experienced a check engine light for loss of fuel pressure as well as loss of engine power reducing top speed to <20mph. This loss of power occurred while driving on a freeway and created a significant safety hazard. The truck was taken to a Ford dealership where it was diagnosed with failure of the Bosch CP4 high-pressure fuel pump. During testing by the dealership, the pump was providing only 7,000 PSI when 17,000 PSI was commanded. Additionally, the dealership discovered "internal metal debris within the fuel pump assembly. The metal that is present traveled throughout the entire high-pressure system, [Ford] recommend[s] a complete replacement of all high-pressure fuel components. This follows the manufacturer's technical guidelines (GSB 21-7061) to ensure the system is clean and to prevent immediate engine failure or recurring damage." This is identical to Ford recall 24S78 which covers 2020-2022 Super Duty 6.7L diesel trucks with the same CP4 pump failure. My 2019 F-650 has the exact same Bosch CP4 pump and identical failure mode but is not included in the recall. The Ford dealership has provided a repair estimate totaling $16,112.13. I am currently pursuing goodwill coverage with Ford Corporate (Case #01307855)
Driver reported an intermittent odor of burning oil or hot brakes from rear wheels. Found rear axle wheel seal leaking gear oil; brake pads soaked, and gear oil pooling in wheel. This could compromise braking, and neglecting the leak would cause damage to the rear differential or cause the rear differential to lock up. Took to Ford dealer, who confirmed wheel seal leak & also found leaking pinion seal on steering. Repaired under warranty.
I was driving down the road when the engine suddenly quit. There was no brake assist and no steering assist. I stopped in the middle of the road and could not restart the vehicle. The engine would not crank. There was no transmission gear indicator on the dashboard (likely no CAN-BUS communication with the transmission control module). Eventually I found a loose large-diameter power cable that was loose at the front of the fusebox under the hood, located on the driver-side wheel well. I tightened up the nut that holds this large cable to the stud of the fusebox, and the transmission gear indicator returned. After that, the truck started and drove correctly. Apparently this nut was never tightened at the factory, creating a safety issue.

Brakes do not have proper stopping power. The brakes are very slow to react, and the brake pedal has a long travel before the truck starts to slow down. This can be extremely dangerous in city driving. We have four of these F-650s in our fleet, and all four of these trucks exhibit the same poor braking. Trucks are all new with hydraulic brakes.

The basics
How to read this data
Complaints, recalls, investigations β hereβs what each number actually tells you about a used FORD F 650, in plain English.
What is an NHTSA Complaint?
An NHTSA safety complaint is a report filed directly by a vehicle owner or driver describing a safety-related issue. Anyone can submit a complaint at NHTSA.gov. The number of complaints is a signal of how common a problem is β but complaints per model-year matter more than raw totals, since popular vehicles naturally receive more reports. The FORD F 650 has 20 complaints on record across 10 model years.
What is a Safety Recall?
A safety recall is a mandatory campaign issued by NHTSA when a vehicle component poses an unreasonable risk to safety or does not comply with federal motor vehicle safety standards. Unlike complaints (which are owner-reported), recalls are formally investigated and confirmed by regulators. Manufacturers must fix recalled vehicles free of charge. The FORD F 650 has 8 recall campaigns in the NHTSA database.
What Are Crash Complaints?
Crash complaints are NHTSA filings where the owner indicates a crash occurred as part of the incident. 0 of the FORD F 650's 20 complaints involved a crash. This metric is particularly important because it indicates how often defects resulted in actual collisions β a key safety signal beyond general reliability.
How Is the Reliability Verdict Calculated?
The reliability verdict (Good) is generated by analyzing the vehicle's total complaints, recall history, crash complaint ratio, fire complaint ratio, and top component failures relative to class averages. This verdict gives buyers a quick interpretation before they review year-level details and VIN-level history. It should be treated as one decision input, not a substitute for a VIN-specific report.
Why Do Newer Years Have Fewer Complaints?
Newer model years appear to have fewer complaints because there has been less time for owners to file them. Complaints accumulate over years of ownership. A 2020 model year vehicle will typically show fewer complaints than a 2015 model year even if it is less reliable β simply because fewer owners have had time to report issues. Focus on complaints per year of market presence when comparing across model years.
Fleet Data vs. Individual VIN
Everything on this page reflects aggregated data across all FORD F 650 vehicles on the road β not any specific car. Two FORD F 650 vehicles of the same year can have very different histories: one may have been in three accidents and have an open recall; another may be clean. A VIN check gives you the individual car's history: accidents, title brands, odometer records, service history, and real-time recall status.
What Are NHTSA Investigations?
When NHTSA receives a pattern of related safety complaints, it opens a formal investigation. A Preliminary Evaluation (PE) is the first stage β NHTSA determines if a safety defect may exist. If evidence is strong, it escalates to an Engineering Analysis (EA), which can result in a mandatory recall. The FORD F 650 has 0 investigations on record (0 active). Investigations listed above may have already led to the recalls shown on this page.
