POWER TRAINJun 2026

I am reporting an imminent, life-threatening safety defect regarding a Cadillac XT5, purchased 1/10/26 and repurchased by the dealership on 5/16/2026. While driving, this vehicle experiences an unpredictable and intermittent defect causing the transmission to unexpectedly shift into PARK while the vehicle is in motion. The vehicle was taken to the franchised Cadillac dealer it was purchased fr three times for repair assessments. The service appointents lasted between 1 week- 4 weeks. In total, the car was in my possssion 5 days since the first service appointment due to the ongoing, dangerous drivetrain defect. On the 2nd attempt, parts of the transmission were replaced and the dealer documented at least one occurrence of the gear shift failure, but the defect was not resolved. General Motors (GM) corporate inspectors subsequently inspected the vehicle. Ater that, the dealership repurchased the vehicle from me to take it off the road. About a week after the dealer repurchased the car, GM contacted me, wanting to repurchase the car. When i told them it was already repurchased by the dealership. GM's reponse was to offer me financial resitution for the payments I made only if I sign a General Release of Liability(GRL) for them. However, the dealer has since listed this vehicle for sale to the general public without any evidence of repairing the defect. It is currently being marketed to unsuspecting consumers. This vehicle poses an immediate crash and injury risk to anyone who drives it or shares the road with it. The CARFAX report does not reflect any of the drivetrain issues, nor does it reflect the buyback. GM's response regarding my concern about the dealership re-selling the car was that its out of their hands since the dealer owns the car. I will not sign the GM Release until the records accurately reflect the safety defect. I filed carfax dispute 6/22/26 in an attempt to protect others from this dangerous vehicle.

SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULICMay 2026

The contact owns a 2023 Cadillac XT5. The contact stated that the brake pedal would depress to the floorboard without warning. The contact had taken the vehicle to a dealer where a diagnostic was performed. The dealer received various diagnostic codes all related to the brake master cylinder. The contact was given a loaner vehicle and the dealer replaced both the brake master cylinder and the vehicle's battery. Despite the dealers repair, the contact refused to take possession of the vehicle due to the prior brake failure as she felt unsafe driving the vehicle. The manufacturer had yet to be notified of the failure. The vehicle was repaired. The failure mileage was 33,770.

ENGINEApr 2026

When driving the whole car shakes and the engine makes a loud sound. It doesn't matter if I am going 10 mph or 75 mph the same shaking happens. The engine smells like burnt rubber. Driving feels like jerking not a smooth ride. I have already had the engine oil leak repaired. My car has been in the shop 3x in 2 months for this same problem. The dealership did a transmission systems update which did not help. When driving downhills the RMPS shoot up and get stuck between 3,000-4,000. The dealership could not find any documentation that downhill assist is a feature on this car. The dealership was not able to replicate these issues. I own a 2023 Cadillac XT5 with 30,859 miles on it.

POWER TRAINNov 2025

The car has a shudder/vibrate and what feels like jerking at certain speeds. I have a 2023 XT5 Premium Luxury 3.6 However, I have taken multiple times to Big O tires had tires replaced, brakes, Lower control arms, I still had a vibration issue. Took back to Big O due to Tire balance issue but came back tires and balance and alignment were fine. I was told that Big O, hooked the car up to a TPS machine and stated my torque convertor needs replaced. My car only has 51,500 miles. They stated that the shudder is between gears 3 & 4. I understand my car powertrain and drive train are under the 70,000 mile warranty. But I keep hearing this is major issue with the 2023 XT5. Making me think I have a lemon since the issue is already happening on such a new car.

UNKNOWN OR OTHERApr 2025

I purchased the 2023 Cadillac, with 19800 miles a week ago. The back up camera grid lines are so faint that most of the time they aren't visible. There is no contrast adjustment to make them visible. This condition is definitely a safety issue for me. As a [XXX] I depend on those grid lines to safely back into parking spots or my garage. My dealership tells me there is no resolution for this problem. Can you Help me? POWER TRAINAug 2024

The contact owns a 2023 Cadillac XT5. The contact stated driving at various speeds, he noticed that the floorboard was vibrating. The contact stated that the failure had been recurring intermittently. There was no warning light illuminated. The vehicle was taken to the dealer, where it was test-driven and the transmission fluid was replaced; however, the failure recurred increasingly. The vehicle was taken back to the dealer, but the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The contact related the failure to NHTSA Campaign Number: 23V172000 (Power Train); however, the VIN was not included. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 10,000.

BACK OVER PREVENTIONNov 2023

The contact owns a 2023 Cadillac XT5. The contact stated that while reversing from the garage, the rear-view on the camera screen was working as designed; however, the camera screen turned dark in the daylight. While continuing to reverse down the driveway, the screen corrected independently. There were no warning lights illuminated. The vehicle was taken to the local dealer and the contact was informed that the function operated as designed. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was contacted, and the contact was referred to the dealer for assistance. The failure mileage was approximately 15.

STEERING,POWER TRAIN,ENGINEMay 2023

The contact owns a 2023 Cadillac XT5. The contact stated that on two occasions while driving at approximately 25 MPH, the steering wheel seized, and the vehicle veered to the side of the road. Additionally, the gear shifter malfunctioned and the light to indicate that the vehicle was parked, was inoperable. The ABS, Check engine, powertrain malfunction, and brake warning lights were illuminated. The vehicle was towed to a dealer where it was diagnosed and determined that unknown part needed to be replaced. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 1,000. The contact stated after being in the shop for three months the first time and completely gutted (after only having the vehicle for 10 days) it was returned to her. The manufacturer and dealer refused to issue a buyback for the vehicle.

UNKNOWN OR OTHERMar 2023

The rear camera takes way too long to switch from night mode to day mode. When parked in the garage, there is not enough light so it goes to night mode. After raising the garage door and starting the car, the camera is in night mode. If the sun is bright, and the driver is wearing sunglasses, the rear camera image on the display is unreadable. After backing out of the garage it takes 15-20 seconds for the camera to switch to day mode. During this time, the area rear of the car is totally indiscernible, including the sidewalk that crosses my driveway. There should be a way for the driver to adjust this timing or even turn the night mode off completely. Even at night, the image is too dark.

UNKNOWN OR OTHERFeb 2023

Front half of sunroof exploded while driving. Hard top. was closed but if it wasn’t glass would’ve fallen directly on myself and any passengers posing a safety risk. I could have been in an accident. Glass falling from the vehicle posed a safety concern for others on the road. I have had this car 1 month. When I called the dealer was told I would have to file an insurance claim. Currently awaiting repairs. Insurance claim has been filed.

POWER TRAINJan 2023

11/12/2022 / At Highway speed vehicle became unresponsive to throttle. Engine would increase in RPMs as indicated on Tach and speedometer would show increased speed, but acceleration was not noticeable and a gear grinding sound was heard. Unable to move vehicle in any direction. Vehicle towed to dealer and was told the left front axel pulled out of transmission. Dealer was asked to return defective drive shaft to GM but was never sent. All this with only 147 miles on odometer. 01/14/2023 / Second time this happened was at 453 miles on odometer and was on interstate. After discussion’s with service manager was told that on January 6 2022 an engineering bulletin was issued addressing this issue (#PIE0732A) that states (If you have a 2023 vehicle (Acadia, Blazer, Enclave, Traverse, XT5, XT6) built between September 15 and October31,2022 with this condition, please replace the transmission and axle. ) A statement was made that GM was not replacing all transmissions on all affected vehicles only those with have the drive shaft fall out. This presents a safety to consumers by allowing a defective vehicle on the roads that could loose power and or control in a moment of emergency that could cause a crash.

BACK OVER PREVENTIONOct 2022

The contact owns a 2023 Cadillac XT5. The contact stated that while operating the vehicle, the backup camera malfunctioned, and only a black screen was displayed. The contact indicated that the failure was intermittent. Additionally, the contact indicated that while the camera was working, the image was very dim, making it difficult to view the image being displayed. The cause of the failure was not yet determined. The local dealer and manufacturer were notified of the failure, but no assistance was offered. The failure mileage 300.

LANE DEPARTURE,BACK OVER PREVENTIONOct 2022

The contact owns a 2023 Cadillac XT5. The contact stated that upon purchase of the vehicle, she was informed that the full camera system had yet to be installed and that the part would become available in the 4th quarter of 2022. The contact also stated that while driving at various spends, the lane departure warning feature activated with no other vehicles nearby. The contact also stated that the back-up camera failed to operate as needed with an unknown alert message on the infotainment screen. The dealer was notified of the failure and referred her to a local dealer for assistance with the vehicle. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 800.

POWER TRAINAug 2026

Since I purchased my 2022 Cadillac XT5 which was on 5-9-26, I have had issues with the performance of the transmission. Every time I slow down, the car down shifts very abruptly and roughly until the car comes to a complete stop. I also experience rough gear shifts when accelerating as well. This vehicle should have a smooth transition through gears not harsh and rough especially in a luxury vehicle. In addition to this being annoying, it is also a safety hazard as you lose control when it happens. A service bulletin was posted by the manufacturer acknowledging these flaws but are not going to do anything to address the issue (see attached file). I know that this is not normal as I have never experienced it with any of the cars I have owned in the past. The vehicle has been inspected by a Cadillac dealership and a Chevy (GM) dealership but they were unable to fix it due to the manufacturer bulletin. Note that a software update and transmission fluid exchange was done but did not help the jerky, clunky ride. Please also note that I have read many reviews from customers who have reported issues about the transmission as well. I don't understand how General Motors can produce these vehicles with such design flaws. It doesn't make sense especially when it affects a Cadillac which has always been a smooth ride with a smooth transmission. I would appreciate some compensation for all that I have experienced with this vehicle. It's not right.

The contact owns a 2022 Cadillac XT5. The contact stated that the back-over prevention camera lines were very faint. The contact was unable to see the guidelines or the markings. There were no warning lights illuminated. The vehicle was taken to the local dealer, who was unable to fix the vehicle. The vehicle was diagnosed, and the contact was informed that the rearview camera was operating as designed. The mechanic was unable to duplicate the failure. The mechanic informed the contact that the dimming of the camera was normal operation while reversing. The vehicle was not repaired. The contact sent an email to the manufacturer, but no response was provided. The failure mileage was approximately 34,000.

CrashELECTRICAL SYSTEM,AIR BAGS,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROLJan 2025

I was backing out of a parking space in reverse as I have done multiple times and the second I took my foot off the brake pedal to go into reverse, my car shot out at a high speed and hit a parked car on the other side of the street. Not realizing that there was an auto malfunction, I attempted to turn around my car to see the damage to the other car and when I went into reverse again to turn around, the car sped up again at high speed, did a 180 degree turn in reverse and hit two additional parked cars. Luckily, no one was hurt. I am 100% certain that I did not depress the accelerator pedal to cause the car to go at that speed in reverse twice! We contacted General Motors which supposedly had their engineers look at the mechanicals of the car but the only information we received from them is that the car did accelerate both times at 99% of capacity. The air bags did not deploy so the crash computer did not activiate. GM either did not examine the soft ware on the car, or, if they did, that information was not shared with us. If I had been in a crowded parking lot, the consequences could have been catastophic.

The basics

How to read this data

Complaints, recalls, investigations β€” here’s what each number actually tells you about a used Cadillac XT5, in plain English.

01

What is an NHTSA Complaint?

An NHTSA safety complaint is a report filed directly by a vehicle owner or driver describing a safety-related issue. Anyone can submit a complaint at NHTSA.gov. The number of complaints is a signal of how common a problem is β€” but complaints per model-year matter more than raw totals, since popular vehicles naturally receive more reports. The Cadillac XT5 has 296 complaints on record across 10 model years.

02

What is a Safety Recall?

A safety recall is a mandatory campaign issued by NHTSA when a vehicle component poses an unreasonable risk to safety or does not comply with federal motor vehicle safety standards. Unlike complaints (which are owner-reported), recalls are formally investigated and confirmed by regulators. Manufacturers must fix recalled vehicles free of charge. The Cadillac XT5 has 19 recall campaigns in the NHTSA database.

03

What Are Crash Complaints?

Crash complaints are NHTSA filings where the owner indicates a crash occurred as part of the incident. 17 of the Cadillac XT5's 296 complaints involved a crash. This metric is particularly important because it indicates how often defects resulted in actual collisions β€” a key safety signal beyond general reliability.

04

How Is the Reliability Verdict Calculated?

The reliability verdict (Poor) is generated by analyzing the vehicle's total complaints, recall history, crash complaint ratio, fire complaint ratio, and top component failures relative to class averages. This verdict gives buyers a quick interpretation before they review year-level details and VIN-level history. It should be treated as one decision input, not a substitute for a VIN-specific report.

05

Why Do Newer Years Have Fewer Complaints?

Newer model years appear to have fewer complaints because there has been less time for owners to file them. Complaints accumulate over years of ownership. A 2020 model year vehicle will typically show fewer complaints than a 2015 model year even if it is less reliable β€” simply because fewer owners have had time to report issues. Focus on complaints per year of market presence when comparing across model years.

06

Fleet Data vs. Individual VIN

Everything on this page reflects aggregated data across all Cadillac XT5 vehicles on the road β€” not any specific car. Two Cadillac XT5 vehicles of the same year can have very different histories: one may have been in three accidents and have an open recall; another may be clean. A VIN check gives you the individual car's history: accidents, title brands, odometer records, service history, and real-time recall status.

07

What Are NHTSA Investigations?

When NHTSA receives a pattern of related safety complaints, it opens a formal investigation. A Preliminary Evaluation (PE) is the first stage β€” NHTSA determines if a safety defect may exist. If evidence is strong, it escalates to an Engineering Analysis (EA), which can result in a mandatory recall. The Cadillac XT5 has 0 investigations on record (0 active). Investigations listed above may have already led to the recalls shown on this page.
