PLEASE INVESTIGATE! APPROX. 3 DAYS AGO I WAS COMING TO A STOP SIGN IN A RESIDENTIAL AREA & APPLIED BRAKES. SPEED LIMIT IS 25, BUT I WAS GOING SLOWER, JUST TO THE CORNER PAST MY HOME. NOT ONLY DID BRAKES NOT WORK- THE CAR BEGAN TO ACCELERATE ON ITS OWN TO ABOUT 35-40 MPH- NO GAS APPLIED. TRIED PUMPING BRAKES, SHIFTING THE CAR INTO NEUTRAL, REVERSE, PARK- ALL WHILE AT AN UNEXPECTED ACCELERATED SPEED. I PLOWED INTO A RESIDENTIAL YARD WHICH HAD A SMALL HILL THINKING MAYBE I COULD STOP THE CAR THAT WAY. THAT DIDN'T WORK. I SWERVED BACK INTO THE STREET; CAR STILL REVVING AND MOVING FORWARD. AT THAT POINT I THOUGHT I WAS GOING TO CRASH INTO A HOUSE, POLE OR ANOTHER VEHICLE. I ENDED UP HALFWAY ON THE STREET AND HALFWAY ON A CURB AFTER CONTINUOUSLY TRYING THE BRAKES AND SHIFTING FROM DRIVE TO PARK (VEHICLE STILL ACCELERATING AS IF IT WAS POSSESSED!!) AND JUST BEFORE HITTING A LIGHT POLE, WITH DRIVER SIDE DOOR OPEN THINKING I'D RATHER JUMP OUT OF A MOVING VEHICLE THAN DIE FROM RAMMING INTO A POLE, HOUSE OR CAR- I THOUGHT TO TURN PHYSICALLY TURN OFF THE IGNITION WHILE THE VEHICLE WAS IN DRIVE. THIS IS THE ONLY WAS THE CAR WOULD STOP MOVING. THIS WAS A VERY DISTURBING AND DANGEROUS EXPERIENCE. I HAVE NO DOUBT THIS IS NOT A NORMAL ISSUE AND SHOULD BE RECALLED AND FIXED BY THE MANUFACTURER- WHATEVER IT IS. MY MECHANIC STILL HAS NOT DETERMINED WHAT THE ISSUE IS. WE KNOW IT ISN'T AS SIMPLE AS JUST FIXING THE BRAKES. I AND/OR OTHER PEOPLE COULD HAVE BEEN KILLED IN THE PROCESS AND EVEN WORSE, MY TWO SMALL CHILDREN COULD HAVE BEEN IN THE CAR WHICH THANKFULLY THEY WERE NOT. THIS WAS SUCH A TRAUMATIC EXPERIENCE THAT I NO LONGER FEEL SAFE DRIVING THE CAR FOR FEAR IT COULD HAPPEN AGAIN WITH MY CHILDREN INSIDE. IF I HAVE THE CAR REPAIRED, I DON'T EVEN KNOW THAT I FEEL COMFORTABLE SELLING IT TO ANYONE ELSE- IT'S THAT DANGEROUS! PLEASE INVESTIGATE. THIS PROBLEM IS DEADLY. 2004 CADILLAC SRX 4DR

WE BELIEVE THE ISSUE HAS TO DO WITH THE TIMING CHAIN. IN DOING SOME RESEARCH, WE FOUND CASE #10287 AND FOUND THAT GM OFFERED AN EXTENDED WARRANTY FOR THE TIMING CHAIN, UNTIL FEB 2017. WE PURCHASED THE VEHICLE FEBRUARY OF 2018. WE CALLED GM AND SPOKE WITH REPRESENTATIVES THAT SAID THERE WAS IN FACT A RECALL FOR OUR EXACT MAKE, MODEL AND YEAR FOR THE PREMATURE WARE OF THE TIMING CHAIN, BUT IT WAS NOT WITH OUR VIN.
2 TIMING CHAINS WITHIN 8 MONTHS JUST PUT THE SECOND ONE IN ON SATURDAY AND 4 DAYS LATER THE CAR IS MAKING THE SAME NOISE AGAIN. I HAVE SPOKE TO MANY PEOPLE ABOUT THIS AND THEY ARE TELLING ME THIS IS A PROBLEM WITH THIS MOTOR. THE SECOND TIME THE TIMING CHAIN WENT I WAS DRIVING DOWN ROUTE 55 IN NJ AND THE CAR SHUT OFF AND WOULD NOT START THE FIRST TIME IT WENT I WAS IN THE DRIVEWAY AND WOULD NOT STAY RUNNING. I DO NOT HAVE THE MONEY TO KEEP PUTTING IN THIS OR THE FUNDS TO GET ANOTHER CAR I EXPECT WHEN I PIT MONEY INTO THE CAR I DON'T EXPECT IT TO START RUNNING THE WAY IT WAS WHEN THE TIMING CHAIN WENT.

I DISCOVERED FLUID LEAKING UNDER THE VEHICLE AND A BANGING, LOUD NOISE WAS PRESENT WHEN SHIFTING TO 1ST GEAR. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE MECHANIC WHERE IT WAS DIAGNOSED THAT THE REAR DIFFERENTIAL GASKET WAS RUPTURED. I CALLED THE GMC DEALER IN COSTA MESA, CA AND I WAS INFORMED THAT THE VEHICLE WAS NOT INCLUDED IN NHTSA CAMPAIGN NUMBER: 07V589000 (POWER TRAIN), EVEN IF THE VEHICLE EXPERIENCED THE SAME FAILURE LISTED IN THE RECALL. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 65-70,000M. PLEASE HELP ME SINCE THE DEALER SAID IS NOT THEIR RESPONSABILITY, BECAUSE BASED ON THE VIN NUMBER, THIS CAR IS NOT INCLUDED IN THE RECALL. THE RECALL STARTED ON DEC.20, 2007, SO I'M ALMOST 100% THAT MY VEHICLE WAS BUILT BEFORE THAT DAY IN THE YEAR OF 2007. PLEASE HELP ME SINCE THIS NOISE IS SO LOUD AND THE BANGING IS SO POWERFULL, THAT MY KIDS ALWAYS THINK THAT I HIT OR SOMEBODYELSE HIT OUR CAR.

I HAVE TAKEN MY VEHICLE TO THIS SHOP TWICE NOW FOR MY TIMING. THEY CLAIM THEY HAVE REPAIRED IT TWICE & ALSO REPLACED A VARIABLE VALVE TIMING SOLENOID. ALMOST 3,000.00. ONCE AGAIN IT QUIT WORKING MONTHS AGO. HAD IT TOWED TO ANOTHER MECHANIC & WHEN DIAGNOSED, IT WENT BACK TO THE TIMING CHAINS FOR THE 3RD TIME IN LESS THAN A YEAR. MY MECHANIC WENT ON LINE & INFORMED ME CADILLAC HAS HAS A LOT OF PROBLEMS WITH THE TIMING ON THEIR CARS. PLS HELP. I AM DISABLED & I THINK THERE SHOULD BE A RECALL ON THIS CAR. WHEN I WAS DRIVING IT THIS LAST TIME, THE CAR WOULD SPEED UP ON ITS OWN WHICH WAS VERY SCARY FOR ME. WHEN I GOT TO MY DESTINATION A MILE UP THE ROAD IT DIED. I TRIED TO START IT & IT WOULD START BUT WOULDN'T TURN OVER. WHEN I LET GO OF THE KEY IT STAYED ON & KEPT TRYING TO START ON ITS OWN, LIKE I HAD THE KEY TURNED. IT DID SHUT OFF FINALLY WHEN I TURNED IT OFF. AFTER THE MECHANIC AT CABLES FIXED THE TIMING THE FIRST TIME, I WAS INFORMED IF I DIDN'T REPLACE THE VARIABLE VALVE TIMING SOLENOID, HE COULD NOT GUARANTEE THE TIMING AGAIN SO I PAID TO HAVE THAT DONE AS WELL. THIS ALL STARTED 7-24-14 & HAS BEEN IN THE SHOP OFF & ON SINCE THEN. I RECENTLY LOST MY YOUNGEST DAUGHTER & AM DISABLED SO MY TRANSPORTATION IS EVERYTHING TO ME & I CAN'T KEEP PAYING FOR THIS TIMING SINCE I AM NOW PAYING FOR FUNERAL EXPENSES ALONG WITH MANY OTHER RELATED EXPENSES. PLS PLS HELP.

The basics
How to read this data
Complaints, recalls, investigations — here’s what each number actually tells you about a used Cadillac SRX, in plain English.
What is an NHTSA Complaint?
An NHTSA safety complaint is a report filed directly by a vehicle owner or driver describing a safety-related issue. Anyone can submit a complaint at NHTSA.gov. The number of complaints is a signal of how common a problem is — but complaints per model-year matter more than raw totals, since popular vehicles naturally receive more reports. The Cadillac SRX has 2,854 complaints on record across 10 model years.
What is a Safety Recall?
A safety recall is a mandatory campaign issued by NHTSA when a vehicle component poses an unreasonable risk to safety or does not comply with federal motor vehicle safety standards. Unlike complaints (which are owner-reported), recalls are formally investigated and confirmed by regulators. Manufacturers must fix recalled vehicles free of charge. The Cadillac SRX has 30 recall campaigns in the NHTSA database.
What Are Crash Complaints?
Crash complaints are NHTSA filings where the owner indicates a crash occurred as part of the incident. 135 of the Cadillac SRX's 2,854 complaints involved a crash. This metric is particularly important because it indicates how often defects resulted in actual collisions — a key safety signal beyond general reliability.
How Is the Reliability Verdict Calculated?
The reliability verdict (Poor) is generated by analyzing the vehicle's total complaints, recall history, crash complaint ratio, fire complaint ratio, and top component failures relative to class averages. This verdict gives buyers a quick interpretation before they review year-level details and VIN-level history. It should be treated as one decision input, not a substitute for a VIN-specific report.
Why Do Newer Years Have Fewer Complaints?
Newer model years appear to have fewer complaints because there has been less time for owners to file them. Complaints accumulate over years of ownership. A 2020 model year vehicle will typically show fewer complaints than a 2015 model year even if it is less reliable — simply because fewer owners have had time to report issues. Focus on complaints per year of market presence when comparing across model years.
Fleet Data vs. Individual VIN
Everything on this page reflects aggregated data across all Cadillac SRX vehicles on the road — not any specific car. Two Cadillac SRX vehicles of the same year can have very different histories: one may have been in three accidents and have an open recall; another may be clean. A VIN check gives you the individual car's history: accidents, title brands, odometer records, service history, and real-time recall status.
What Are NHTSA Investigations?
When NHTSA receives a pattern of related safety complaints, it opens a formal investigation. A Preliminary Evaluation (PE) is the first stage — NHTSA determines if a safety defect may exist. If evidence is strong, it escalates to an Engineering Analysis (EA), which can result in a mandatory recall. The Cadillac SRX has 0 investigations on record (0 active). Investigations listed above may have already led to the recalls shown on this page.
