Crash test ratings
NHTSA NCAP crash test ratings
New Car Assessment ProgramNCAP crash tests measure how well a vehicle protects occupants in controlled frontal crash, side crash, and rollover scenarios. Stars are awarded per category (5 = safest). These laboratory results are independent of owner complaints and are performed by NHTSA engineers on new production vehicles.
NCAP crash test ratings for this model are not yet loaded or this vehicle was not tested in the years analyzed. NHTSA tests a subset of new vehicles each year. Check nhtsa.gov/ratings directly for the latest results.

RECALL AIRBAG. IN PUERTO RICO CANNOT FIND ANYONE TO REPLACE IT AS IT IS SAAB 2006
TAKATA RECALL I AM UNABLE TO FIND A SAAB DEALER IN ANCHORAGE ALASKA TO PERFORM THE RECALL WORK. THE SUGGESTED DEALER DOES NOT DO SERVICE WORK ON VEHICLES.
TAKATA RECALL I GOT A NOTICE OVER 6 MONTHS AGO THAT MY CAR IS UNSAFE AND TO NOT USE THE PASS FRONT SEAT. I HAVE A FAMILY OF 4 SO HOW IS THIS POSSIBLE. I WAS TOLD I WOULD GET ANOTHER NOTICE, WHEN MY PART WAS AVAILABLE AND SO FAR NOTHING HAS BEEN DONE. THE AMOUNT OF TIME THIS IS TAKING IS UNACCEPTABLE. MY WIFE, MYSELF AND TWO SMALL CHILDREN ARE AT RISK!
TAKATA RECALL PARTS UNAVAILABLE: THIS IS TAKING WAY TOO LONG, WE HAVE BEEN UNABLE TO PUT PASSENGERS IN THE FROM PASSENGER SEAT FOR OVER A YEAR. GM NEEDS TO PRIORITIZE GETTING ALL AFFECTED VEHICLES REPAIRED. I KNOW THAT OTHER SAAB 9-2X VEHICLES HAVE BEEN REPAIRED, WHY NOT OURS? UNACCEPTABLE!
THE EXTERIOR LIGHTS HAVE TO BE REPLACED ON A CONSTANT BASIS. ONE HEADLIGHT WOULD GO OUT SOON AS YOU FIX IT THE OTHER HEADLIGHT WOULD GO OUT. HOWEVER NOW THE ISSUE HAS BECOME WHERE WHEN I LEAVE TO GO DRIVE SOMEWHERE AT NIGHT MY LIGHTS DON'T EVEN COME ON AT ALL AND I'M FORCED TO HAVE TO USE MY BRIGHTS IN ORDER TO DRIVE HOME. AT FIRST IT WAS JUST A BOTHERSOME THING BUT HAND A LITTLE BIT ANNOYING TO KEEP HAVING TO REPLACE THE LIGHT BULBS. NOW IT'S NO LONGER AND ANNOYANCE, IT HAS BECOME A SAFETY ISSUE AND ALSO POSSIBLY AN ISSUE OF BEING PULLED OVER FOR DRIVING WITH MY BRIGHTS ON. I BOUGHT THIS CAR FROM MY MOM ALMOST 2 YEARS AGO AND EVEN SHE RECENTLY TOLD ME SHE EXPERIENCED THE SAME PROBLEM WHEN SHE OWNED IT AS WELL APPARENTLY. *TR

DRIVING LIGHTS WILL GO OUT AT UNKNOWING TIMES. RECEIVED 1ST LETTER FROM GM A SAFETY RECALL STATING THAT MY SAAB HAD A DEFECT RELATING TO HEAD LAMPS AND RUNNING LAMPS COULD FAIL. SET UP APPOINTMENT WITH GM REPAIR SHOP TO HAVE PROBLEM RESOLVED. THEY SAID THAT MY VEHICLE WASN'T INCLUDED IN THE RECALL . RECEIVED 2ND LETTER FROM GM STATING THAT MY SAAB IS NOT INCLUDED ON RECALL, AS RECALLS WERE SENT OUT TO RESOLVE THIS PROBLEM. LETTER I RECEIVED FROM GM STATES MY VEHICLE HAS HIGH INTENSITY DISCHARGE [HID] HEADLAMPS. THEN WHY DO MY HEADLIGHTS GO OUT AT ANY TIME. THIS IS A SAFETY HAZARD FOR NIGHT DRIVING. ANY HELP WITH THIS MATTER WOULD BE GREATLY APPRECIATED. *TR
THIS IS FOR TWO EVENTS: 1) I PURCHASED VEH NEW IN 2006. IN 2012 I HAD JUST SERVICED W/OIL CHANGE, CHECK UP AT 51000 MI. ONE MORNING, ENGINE MADE A SOUND LIKE PEBBLES HITTING IT, BEGAN TO SMOKE LIKE ON FIRE, ALL LIGHTS CAME ON, ENGINE CEASED. I HAD TO TOW THE VEH AND TO PURCHASE REBUILT ENGINE AS WAS TOLD ENGINE DESTROYED. GM WOULD NOT HONOR DEALER WARRANTY. SAAB WOULD NOT HONOR WARRANTY. NO LOCAL DEALER WOULD REPLACE/REPAIR ENGINE. I TRIED JERRY SEINER, KEN GARF, MARK MILLER IN UT AND KACHINA AND LEGENDS IN AZ; NO ONE WOULD HONOR WARRANTY WHEN VEHICLE WAS JUST IN SHOP FOR FULL CHECKUP AND OIL CHANGE AND DEEMED ROAD WORTHY. MY VEH HAD ALWAYS BEEN SERVICED AT DEALER AND GARAGED. ALL MAINTENANCE DONE TIMELY.NO ONE WOULD REPLACE ENGINE. RIDICULOUS TO CEASE AT 51,000 MI. 2) ON 10/13/2014 I HAVE 72,000 MI ON VEH AND WAS REAR-ENDED WHILE STOPPED AT LITE. AIRBAGS DID NOT DEPLOY AND I SLID INTO STEERING WHEEL SUSTAINING INJURY. AIRBAGS SHOULD HAVE DEPLOYED WITH THE IMPACT (HIT BY VEH GOING APPROX 45 MPH). *TR
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2006 SAAB 92X. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE OPERATING THE VEHICLE, THE AIR BAG WARNING LIGHT ILLUMINATED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT DIAGNOSED OR REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 180,000.
I HAD BEEN DRIVING MY CAR ON A CITY STREET FOR < 2 MINUTES AT ~ 30 MPH. THE RED WARNING TRIANGLE WITH ! CANE ON . WITHIN 10 SECONDS THERE WAS A BANG UNDER THE DRIVERS SEAT, IN ABOUT 5 SECONDS THE PASSENGER AIRBAG DEPLOYED BREAKING THE WINDSHIELD AND DASHBOARD. IN ANOTHER 5 OR SO SECONDS THE DRIVERS' SIDE AIRBAG DEPLOYED. THERE WAS NO REASON FOR THE DEPLOYMENT, NO COLLISION, DRY STREETS, NO OTHER MECHANICAL PROBLEM. *TR
Does recall supposed to be done under the general motors theyβre refusing to do this recall. And itβs the law they have to do this recall not my fault. Itβs a sob that was made by Subaru, but itβs GMβs product 05-06.
The contact owns a 2005 Saab 9-2X. The contact received notifications of NHTSA Campaign Numbers: 11V464000 (Suspension) and 15V323000 (Air Bags); however, the parts to do the recall repairs were not yet available. The local dealer and Chevrolet 112 (631) 317-2348) were contacted but referred the contact to Subaru for recall repair assistance. The Subaru manufacturer and GM manufacturer were notified of the issue, but no assistance was provided. The contact stated that the manufacturer had exceeded a reasonable amount of time for the recall repair. The contact had not experienced a failure. Parts distribution disconnect.
The contact owns a 2005 Saab 9-2x. The contact stated while attempting to park the vehicle, the control arm fractured. There was no warning light illuminated. The vehicle was taken to a local dealer and was told rubber bushings and rubber control arm links could be worn. The control could just break apart from rust. The vehicle was not repaired. The contact stated that the vehicle was repaired in 2012 under NHTSA campaign number: 11V464000 (Suspension) however, the failure still occurred. The manufacturer had been informed of the failure but offered no additional assistance. The failure mileage was approximately 90,000. The consumer is still waiting to have the vehicle repaired. The consumer stated after arguing with GM, the appoint was set for July 16, 2021.The consumer stated it was determined to be damage a broken control arm, broken sway bar link, broken sway bar and axle being pulled from the differential. There was a temporary control arm replaced in order for the vehicle to move, but the repairs have not been made for this vehicle. The vehicle will need an alignment and parts replaced upon inspection to see if there is more damage. than initial inspection showed.
IT IS A KNOWN ISSUE IN THE SAAB 9-2X COMMUNITY THAT THE REAR STRUT TOWERS RUST OUT AND FALL APART. THIS IS AN ISSUE THAT SHOULD BE ADDRESSED AS IT IS SO COMMON WHETHER IN A RUST PRONE STATE OR NOT.
BOTH REAR LEFT AND RIGHT STRUT TOWERS BEGAN RUSTING TO THE POINT THE REAR SUSPENSION ALIGNMENT WAS CONSTANTLY SHIFTING DUE TO THE LACK OF STRUCTURE REMAINING IN THE BODY
METAL PLATE REAR STRUT TOWERS RUSTING OUT. CONSTANTLY, PRESENTS POTENTIAL FOR SUSPENSION TO FAIL AND REAR RUNNING GEAR TO PUNCTURE THE BODY
IT IS A WELL KNOWN ISSUE WITH 2005-2006 SAAB 9-2X'S, SUBARU WRX'S THAT THE REAR STRUT TOWERS ARE PRONE TO RUST THROUGH AND CAUSE A REAR STRUT TO COMPLETELY BREAK FREE FROM THE BODY OF THE VEHICLE. THIS IS A GENERAL MOTORS/SUBARU ISSUE, SINCE THE 9-2X IS ALL SUBARU PARTS WITH SAAB BADGING.
SEVERE STRUT TOWER RUST WITH MANY PEOPLES COLLAPSING. THIS IS DIRECTLY DUE TO SUBARU AND GMS MANUFACTURING OF THE CAR.
STRUT TOWERS CORROSION
THE FOUR BOLTS THAT THE REAR SEATS ATTACH TO HOLD MOISTURE WHICH THEN INFILTRATES THE STRUT TOWERS AND CAUSES THEM TO ROT OUT. WHAT WILL HAPPEN IS YOU CAN BE DRIVING AND WITHOUT NOTICE, A WHEEL WILL DISCONNECT FROM THE BODY OF THE CAR AND IMMEDIATELY BECOME A HAZARD THAT FORCES YOU TO WRECK THE CAR SINCE THE WHEEL IS NO LONGER ATTACHED. EVERY SAAB 9-2X HAS THIS ISSUE AND EVERY OWNER EITHER PARTS THE CAR OUT OR HAS TO HAVE IT REPAIRED WHICH I RECENTLY DID TO THE TUNE OF $1,075. JUST TO KEEP THE CAR SAFE TO DRIVE. THE FIX REQUIRES THE RUSTED AREA TO BE CUT OUT AND THEN NEW METAL WELDED IN SO IT CAN REGAIN STRUCTURAL RIGIDITY.

The basics
How to read this data
Complaints, recalls, investigations β hereβs what each number actually tells you about a used SAAB 9 2X, in plain English.
What is an NHTSA Complaint?
An NHTSA safety complaint is a report filed directly by a vehicle owner or driver describing a safety-related issue. Anyone can submit a complaint at NHTSA.gov. The number of complaints is a signal of how common a problem is β but complaints per model-year matter more than raw totals, since popular vehicles naturally receive more reports. The SAAB 9 2X has 121 complaints on record across 5 model years.
What is a Safety Recall?
A safety recall is a mandatory campaign issued by NHTSA when a vehicle component poses an unreasonable risk to safety or does not comply with federal motor vehicle safety standards. Unlike complaints (which are owner-reported), recalls are formally investigated and confirmed by regulators. Manufacturers must fix recalled vehicles free of charge. The SAAB 9 2X has 11 recall campaigns in the NHTSA database.
What Are Crash Complaints?
Crash complaints are NHTSA filings where the owner indicates a crash occurred as part of the incident. 2 of the SAAB 9 2X's 121 complaints involved a crash. This metric is particularly important because it indicates how often defects resulted in actual collisions β a key safety signal beyond general reliability.
How Is the Reliability Verdict Calculated?
The reliability verdict (Below Average) is generated by analyzing the vehicle's total complaints, recall history, crash complaint ratio, fire complaint ratio, and top component failures relative to class averages. This verdict gives buyers a quick interpretation before they review year-level details and VIN-level history. It should be treated as one decision input, not a substitute for a VIN-specific report.
Why Do Newer Years Have Fewer Complaints?
Newer model years appear to have fewer complaints because there has been less time for owners to file them. Complaints accumulate over years of ownership. A 2020 model year vehicle will typically show fewer complaints than a 2015 model year even if it is less reliable β simply because fewer owners have had time to report issues. Focus on complaints per year of market presence when comparing across model years.
Fleet Data vs. Individual VIN
Everything on this page reflects aggregated data across all SAAB 9 2X vehicles on the road β not any specific car. Two SAAB 9 2X vehicles of the same year can have very different histories: one may have been in three accidents and have an open recall; another may be clean. A VIN check gives you the individual car's history: accidents, title brands, odometer records, service history, and real-time recall status.
What Are NHTSA Investigations?
When NHTSA receives a pattern of related safety complaints, it opens a formal investigation. A Preliminary Evaluation (PE) is the first stage β NHTSA determines if a safety defect may exist. If evidence is strong, it escalates to an Engineering Analysis (EA), which can result in a mandatory recall. The SAAB 9 2X has 0 investigations on record (0 active). Investigations listed above may have already led to the recalls shown on this page.
