Crash test ratings
NHTSA NCAP crash test ratings
New Car Assessment ProgramNCAP crash tests measure how well a vehicle protects occupants in controlled frontal crash, side crash, and rollover scenarios. Stars are awarded per category (5 = safest). These laboratory results are independent of owner complaints and are performed by NHTSA engineers on new production vehicles.
NCAP crash test ratings for this model are not yet loaded or this vehicle was not tested in the years analyzed. NHTSA tests a subset of new vehicles each year. Check nhtsa.gov/ratings directly for the latest results.

AIR BAG WARNING LIGHT LIGHTS UP WHEN ADULT PASSENGER SITS IN PASSENGER SEAT AND BUCKLES SAFETY BELT. CAR IS 2001 JAGUAR XK8. JAGUAR USA SAYS VEHICLE IS OUT OF WARRANTY...TOO BAD! COST TO REPAIR APPROX $1400. CAN YOU HELP? *TR
FAILURE OF THE SECONDARY TIMING CHAIN TENSIONERS. THIS RESULTS IN THE NEED FOR A COMPLETE REBUILD OF THE ENGINE. I AM TOLD BY THE DEALER THAT THEY HAVE SEEN A FEW OF THESE SINCE IT IS POORLY DESIGNED. WHEN YOU RESEARCH THIS ON THE NET, IT APPEARS THAT THE PROBLEM IS KNOWN TO JAGUAR OWNERS AND OCCURS TOO FREQUENTLY FOR IT TO BE CHANCE. COST OF INSPECTION AND FIX PRIOR TO FAILURE ABOUT $1200, PRICE AFTER FAILURE $3,000 PLUS. *TR
I WAS RECENTLY MADE AWARE THAT AN EXTREMELY DANGEROUS CONDITION THAT OCCURRED WITH MY 2001 VEHICLE WAS SOMETHING THAT SHOULD HAVE BEEN PREVENTED. IT WAS CONSIDERED A RECALL ITEM ON JAGUARS IN MODEL YEARS 1997- 1999 (JAGUAR SERVICE ACTION NUMBER: S514, SUBJECT: THROTTLE CLOSED POSITION OPERATION, REFERENCE: 13/05/04 303-S514V1). I EXPERIENCED THE SAME CONDITIONS DESCRIBED IN THE RECALL NOTICE AND COULD HAVE EASILY, WITHOUT EXAGGERATION, BEEN KILLED DUE TO THIS ENGINEERING DEFECT. SPECIFICALLY MY JAGUAR XK8 WOULD DISPLAY WARNING LIGHTS AND MESSAGES WHILE RAPIDLY DROPPING TO A SPEED OF ABOUT 1 MILE AN HOUR AND WOULD GO NO FASTER. THE MESSAGES INDICATED THE FOLLOWING: RESTRICTED PERFORMANCE, FAILSAFE ENGINE MODE, TRAC NOT AVAILABLE, ASC NOT AVAILABLE. AFTER THE ENGINE WAS SHUT OFF THE MESSAGES WOULD CLEAR AND THE VEHICLE WORKED FINE. THIS HAPPENED, LUCKILY FOR ME ONLY WHEN I WAS AT A STOP LIGHT OR TRAVELING VERY SLOWLY (EXAMPLE: LEAVING THE HOUSE). WHILE DRIVING TO THE DEALER FOR THE REPAIR, THIS CONDITION OCCURRED 5 TIMES INCLUDING, FOR THE FIRST TIME, ON THE HIGHWAY AT A HIGH RATE OF SPEED. THE THROTTLE BODY WAS REPLACED BY THE DEALER AT A COST TO ME OF NEARLY $2,000. I CONTACTED JAGUAR''S CUSTOMER SERVICE DEPARTMENT LAST WEEK TO EXPRESS MY CONCERNS AND WHAT I THOUGHT SHOULD HAPPEN: 1) THIS CAR SHOULD HAVE BEEN RECALLED AND REPAIRED; 2) WHEN IT WASN'T AND I EXPLAINED THE SYMPTOMS TO THE DEALER, IT SHOULD HAVE BEEN TREATED AS A RECALL ITEM THEN AND I SHOULD HAVE BEEN ADVISED TO IMMEDIATELY STOP DRIVING THE VEHICLE AND TO HAVE IT TOWED. I WAS TOLD THAT TODAY, MARCH 5, 2007, THAT NO ACTION WOULD BE TAKEN TO INFORM OTHERS AND THAT NO REFUND WOULD BE FORTHCOMING. I LEARNED ABOUT THIS RECALL INFORMATION FROM ANOTHER SERVICE SHOP WHO STATED THAT I WAS THE THIRD JAGUAR XK8 THAT HE SENT TO DEALER WITH THIS PROBLEM. ROADFLY HAS NOTES FROM SEVERAL PEOPLE TRYING TO SOLVE THIS SAME PROBLEM. THIS IS NOT AN ISOLATED INCIDENT. *JB
WHILE DRIVING MY 2001 JAGUAR XK-8/ CV. AT HIGHWAY SPEED WITH THE TOP DOWN, THE HYDRAULIC FLUID FROM THE CONVERTIBLE TOP STARTED LEAKING FROM THE CENTER LOCK DOWN MECHANISM ON THE WINDSHIELD FRAME. AT FIRST I THOUGHT IT WAS WINDSHIELD WIPER SPRAY FROM THE CAR IN FRONT OF US. I WIPED MY FACE WITH MY HAND AND FELT AN OILY SUBSTANCE. I PAID CLOSER ATTENTION TO THE WINDSHIELD AND DID NOT SEE ANYTHING ON THE GLASS. I SLOWED THE CAR IN AN ATTEMPT TO FIGURE OUT WHAT WAS HAPPENING. SINCE IT WAS AT NIGHT, IT WAS DIFFICULT TO ASCERTAIN WHERE THE THIS OILY SUBSTANCE WAS COMING FROM. I PLANNED ON GETTING OFF AT THE NEXT EXIT. BEFORE I COULD REACH THE NEXT EXIT MY EYES WERE SPRAYED BY THIS OILY SUBSTANCE. I PULLED ONTO THE SHOULDER WITH MY EYES STINGING AND BARELY OPENED. LUCKILY, MY WIFE HAD WITH HER MY EYE DROPS AND MANAGED TO FLUSH MY EYES OUT WRIGHT AWAY. WHEN I SHIFTED THE CAR INTO PARK I FELT A DROP HIT THE BACK OF MY HAND, THAT IS WHEN I NOTICED THE HYDRAULIC FLUID LEAKING FROM THE WINDSHIELD FRAME. THE COVER FOR THE LOCK MECHANISM IS A MESH METAL TRIM PLATE, AS WE DROVE AT SPEED THE OIL TURNED INTO A FINE MIST AND WAS SPRAYING IN MY FACE. ONCE THE CAR WAS STOPPED IT POOLED ON THE COVER UNTIL IT DRIPPED ONTO THE CENTER CONSOLE. NEEDLESS TO SAY THIS COULD HAVE BEEN A SEVERE PROBLEM AND SHOULD BE LOOKED INTO. THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED AT JAGUAR OF GREAT NECK IN ROSLYN, N.Y. I ALSO CONTACTED THE MANUFACTURER. I HAVE NOT HEARD BACK FROM THEM. *NM
2001 JAGUAR XK8 EXPERIENCED SUDDEN ACCELERATION WHEN THE BRAKES WERE DEPRESSED.*MR AS A RESULT THE CONSUMER COLLIDED WITH A VEHICLE WHICH WAS STOPPED IN FRONT OF HIS. THE ACCIDENT CAUSED PROPERTY DAMAGE TO THE OTHER PERSONS VEHICLE. *NM

WHILE DRIVING AT 60-65 MPH ON A 4 LANE HIGHWAY THE CAR TOOK A HARD TURN LEFT. WHEN I ATTEMPTED TO CORRECT IT WAS IF I HAD NO STEERING WHAT SO EVER. THIS RESULTED IN A COLLISION AND SPIN OUT WITH MY CAR AND THE OTHER CAR. MY DEALER SAID THIS CAN'T HAPPEN, BUT IT DID . THE CAR HAS NOT BEEN REPAIRED AS I WISH TO FIND THE CAUSE.
WHENEVER THE CONVERTIBLE TOP IS DOWN HYDRAULIC FLUID LEAKS FROM THE RELEASE HANDLE OVER THE WINDOW. DEALER HAS ATTEMPTED TO FIX THE PROBLEM ON THREE DIFFERENT OCCASIONS.*AK
CONSUMER STATES THAT WHILE DRIVING, THE VEHICLE SUDDENLY LOST THE POWER STEERING WITHOUT WARNING AND ALMOST LOST CONTROL OF THE VEHICLE. DEALER CONTACTED. TS THE CONSUMER ALSO STATED THAT THERE WAS SMOKE COMING FROM UNDER THE HOOD AND A FLUID LEAK. SCC
FUMES ENTER THE CABIN: SHORTLY AFTER I TOOK DELIVERY OF THE JAGUAR AND NUMEROOUS TIMES THEREAFTER MY WIFE AND I EXPEREINCED SERIOUS HEALTH PROBLEMS WHILE RIDING IN THE CAR. THESE PROBLEMS WERE ONLY WHEN THE SUNROOF WAS OPEN. THE FIRST SYMPTOM WAS BAD HEADACHES. EYES BEGIN TO FEEL DRY AND THERE IS DIFFICULTY FOCUSING. WITHOUT WARNING THE EYES SEEM TO BE STUCK IN THE SOCKETS RESULTING IN VERY BAD DOUBLE VISION. *AK SUNROOF WAS STUCK IN THE OPEN POSITION. DEALER REPLACED THE PURGE CANISTER VALVE AND STATES THAT THE FUMES WERE FROM SEAM SEALANT THAT WILL GO AWAY, AFTER MAKING REPAIRS, CONSUMER STATES THAT THE PROBLEM DID NOT GO AWAY, THEREFORE REQUESTING A CANCELLATION OF THE LEASE AND REQUESTING THAT ALL PAYMENTS MADE BE REIMBURSED. *SLC
I WAS PARKED IN MY DRIVEWAY, AFTER DRIVING HOME FROM THE LOCAL SUPERMARKET WITH THE CONVERTIBLE TOP DOWN - AND UPON PRESSING THE "ROOF" BUTTON TO RAISE AND LOWER THE TOP TO IT'S CLOSED POSITION - I NOTICED THAT THE RIGHT REAR (PASSENGER SIDE) QUARTER WINDOW WOULD NOT RAISE UP CLOSED LIKE THE LEFT SIDE. UPON FURTHER INVESTIGATION I DISCOVERED THAT THIS PROBLEM HAS BEEN HAPPENING TO MANY SIMILAR MODEL YEAR & MAKE VEHICLES, AND HAS BEEN NOTED IN TSB BULLETIN # 501-49. I RESPECTFULLY ASK THAT THIS ISSUE GENERATE A RECALL FROM JAGUAR TO REMEDY THE PROBLEM. *TR
I WAS DRIVING ABOUT 65 MILES AN HOUR ON THE FREEWAY WHEN MY KNEE BUMPED THE IGNITION/KEY AND TURNED THE CAR OFF. I DID NOT THINK MUCH OF IT AT THE TIME AND WAS ABLE TO HANDLE THE DANGEROUS SITUATION. AFTER SEEING ALL THE SERIOUS ISSUES WITH GM AND CHRYSLER THOUGHT I SHOULD DROP YOU A LINE. *TR
I WAS INSIDE MY VEHICLE (2000JAGUARXK8) I WAS ATTEMPTED TO LOWER THE CONVERTIBLE TOP DOWN. THE HYDRAULIC LINES WHICH FEED THE MOTOR FAILED AND HYDRAULIC FLUID (3-4OZ'S) POURED OUT FROM THE TOP WHERE THE LIGHT CONSOLE IS IN THE HEADLINER OF THE CAR ONTO ME. SMOKE CAME OUT OF THE LIGHT CONSOLE AS IT WAS SHORTED OUT. I AM REPORTING THIS SAFETY HAZARD SINCE HYDRAULIC FLUID IS FLAMMABLE AND I AM JUST LUCKY, THAT A FIRE DID NOT START AND I WAS NOT SMOKING AT THE TIME. I TOOK THE CAR TO THE DEALERSHIP WHICH WAS AWARE AND HAD HEARD OF THIS HAPPENING TO OTHERS. THEY WERE ABLE TO REPLACE THESE LINES. I DO NOT HAVE THE OLD PARTS. *TR
MY WIFE AN I HAVE A 2000 JAGUAR XK8 CONVERTIBLE AND THE PLASTIC HYDRAULIC LINES RUPTURED ABOVE THE INTERIOR LIGHT SPRAYING HYDRAULIC OIL EVERYWHERE INSIDE THE CAR, INCLUDING ON US, I CONTACTED THE MANUFACTURER AND AFTER A MONTH OR CONSTANT CALLS THEY DIDN'T FEEL IT WAS A PROBLEM OF THEIRS AND I SHOULD PAY THE $1,500.00 FOR REPAIR, THAT JUST COVERED THE LINES AND NOT THE INTERIOR WHICH WAS COVERED IN OIL. I HAVE BEEN TOLD BY MANY REPAIR SHOPS THAT THIS IS DEAD COMMON IN THESE CARS, WHY HAS THERE NOT BEEN A FACTORY RECALL AS THIS IS A VERY TOXIC/DANGEROUS AND EXPENSIVE BLUNDER ON THE PART OF JAGUAR. LUCKY WE WERE AT A STOP WHEN THIS HAPPENED AS OTHERWISE THE AMOUNT OF OIL I GOT IN MY EYES MAY HAVE CAUSED A FATAL ACCIDENT ON THE HIGHWAY. SINCERELY, JOHN & LISA MONAGHAN I CANT IMAGE WHY THEY WOULD USE PLASTIC HYDRAULIC (A FLAMMABLE LIQUID! THANK GOD I DON'T SMOKE) LINES INSIDE THE CAR , BUT METAL HYDRAULIC LINES UNDER THE HOOD ??? *TR
THE INSIDE REAR VIEW MIRROR ON THE 2000 JAGUAR XK8 FAILED BEFORE I PURCHASED IT IN MARCH. IT IS AN AUTO CHROMATIC MIRROR THAT IS SUPPOSED TO DIM AT NIGHT. HOWEVER, WHEN IT FAILED IT CLOUDED UP THE MIRROR AND IT IS VERY DIFFICULT TO SEE, THERE ARE 2 IMAGES, AND IT DOESN'T DIM AT NIGHT. I SPOKE TO THE DEALER AND THE MANUFACTURER TO SEE IF THEY WOULD REPLACE THIS. THEY SAID THAT IT WAS OUT OF WARRANTY. I TOLD THEM THAT THIS IS A SAFETY ISSUE BECAUSE YOU CANNOT PROPERLY SEE OUT OF THE REVIEW MIRROR, AND THAT THIS SEEMS TO BE A VERY COMMON PROBLEM WITH THESE MIRRORS. IT SEEMS THAT THE MAJORITY OF THEM HAVE FAILED. I CANNOT BELIEVE THAT THERE ISN'T A SAFETY RECALL ON THIS. *JB
I GET AN AIRBAG WARNING LIGHT WHICH INDICATES THAT THE AIRBAG MAY NOT WORK. I TOOK THE CAR TO THE DEALER, THEY PLUGGED THE CAR IN AND TOLD ME THAT THEY GOT A FAULT CODE INDICATING THAT THE AIRBAG CASSETTE REEL NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE COST WAS AROUND $355. *JB
VEHICLE STALLED INTERMITTENTLY. THERE HAD BEEN INCIDENTS WHERE VEHICLE DIED IN THE MIDDLE OF THE ROAD, AND CONSUMER LOST CONTROL OF STEERING AND BRAKES. NO INJURIES REPORTED. *AK
BUTTERFLY VALVE LOCATED IN THE FUEL LINE STUCK, CAUSING GAS NOT TO GO TO THE ENGINE. THIS RESULTED IN VEHICLE CUTTING OFF WHILE DRIVING.*AK
PASSENGER SIDE FRONT AIRBAG DEPLOYED AFTER HITTING A MODERATELY SIZED POT HOLE. THE DRIVER'S SIDE FRONT OR SIDE (IF APPLICABLE) DID NOT DEPLOY. THERE WAS NO PASSENGER IN THE SEAT AND THUS THE SEAT BELT WAS NOT ENGAGED. THE AIRBAG DEPLOYMENT SEEMED OVERLY SENSITIVE AND WAS A REPLACED AIRBAG AFTER A MINOR ACCIDENT IN OCTOBER OF 2001.*AK
WHEN APPLYING THE BRAKES ON WET PAVEMENTS TRACTION CONTROL FAILED, CAUSING VEHICLE TO GO INTO A SKID, RESULTING IN A COLLISON. MANUFACTURER NOTIFIED.*AK

The basics
How to read this data
Complaints, recalls, investigations — here’s what each number actually tells you about a used Jaguar XK8, in plain English.
What is an NHTSA Complaint?
An NHTSA safety complaint is a report filed directly by a vehicle owner or driver describing a safety-related issue. Anyone can submit a complaint at NHTSA.gov. The number of complaints is a signal of how common a problem is — but complaints per model-year matter more than raw totals, since popular vehicles naturally receive more reports. The Jaguar XK8 has 21 complaints on record across 5 model years.
What is a Safety Recall?
A safety recall is a mandatory campaign issued by NHTSA when a vehicle component poses an unreasonable risk to safety or does not comply with federal motor vehicle safety standards. Unlike complaints (which are owner-reported), recalls are formally investigated and confirmed by regulators. Manufacturers must fix recalled vehicles free of charge. The Jaguar XK8 has 5 recall campaigns in the NHTSA database.
What Are Crash Complaints?
Crash complaints are NHTSA filings where the owner indicates a crash occurred as part of the incident. 3 of the Jaguar XK8's 21 complaints involved a crash. This metric is particularly important because it indicates how often defects resulted in actual collisions — a key safety signal beyond general reliability.
How Is the Reliability Verdict Calculated?
The reliability verdict (Good) is generated by analyzing the vehicle's total complaints, recall history, crash complaint ratio, fire complaint ratio, and top component failures relative to class averages. This verdict gives buyers a quick interpretation before they review year-level details and VIN-level history. It should be treated as one decision input, not a substitute for a VIN-specific report.
Why Do Newer Years Have Fewer Complaints?
Newer model years appear to have fewer complaints because there has been less time for owners to file them. Complaints accumulate over years of ownership. A 2020 model year vehicle will typically show fewer complaints than a 2015 model year even if it is less reliable — simply because fewer owners have had time to report issues. Focus on complaints per year of market presence when comparing across model years.
Fleet Data vs. Individual VIN
Everything on this page reflects aggregated data across all Jaguar XK8 vehicles on the road — not any specific car. Two Jaguar XK8 vehicles of the same year can have very different histories: one may have been in three accidents and have an open recall; another may be clean. A VIN check gives you the individual car's history: accidents, title brands, odometer records, service history, and real-time recall status.
What Are NHTSA Investigations?
When NHTSA receives a pattern of related safety complaints, it opens a formal investigation. A Preliminary Evaluation (PE) is the first stage — NHTSA determines if a safety defect may exist. If evidence is strong, it escalates to an Engineering Analysis (EA), which can result in a mandatory recall. The Jaguar XK8 has 0 investigations on record (0 active). Investigations listed above may have already led to the recalls shown on this page.
