TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2002 ISUZU TROOPER EQUIPPED WITH BF GOODRICH MUD TERRAIN T/A KM2 TIRES, SIZE: LT265/75R16. WHILE DRIVING BETWEEN 55-65 MPH, THREE OF THE TIRES EXPERIENCED TREAD SEPARATION. THERE WERE MOMENTARY VIBRATIONS JUST BEFORE THE FAILURES. THE FAILURES OCCURRED ON THREE OCCASIONS. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO A TIRE DEALER WHERE THE FRONT DRIVER SIDE AND REAR DRIVER AND PASSENGER SIDE TIRES WERE DEEMED DEFECTIVE. THE TIRES WERE REPLACED. THE DEFECTIVE TIRES WERE REPLACEMENT TIRES WITH ONLY 12,000 MILES ON THEM PRIOR TO THE FAILURES. THE VEHICLE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 49,000 AND THE TIRE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 12,000. THE VIN AND DOT NUMBER WERE NOT AVAILABLE. *TR
I WAS DRIVING ABOUT 35 MPH ON A RURAL ROAD AND I NOTICED THAT UPON GIVING SOME GAS THE VEHICLE DID NOT RESPOND AT ALL. THEN I NOTICED THAT ALL MY INSTRUMENT PANEL LIGHTS WERE OUT....EVERYTHING GONE. I APPLIED THE BRAKES AND WITH DIFFICULTY IN STEERING (THERE WAS NO POWER), I PULLED TO STOP AT THE SIDE OF THE ROAD. I THEN PUT THE VEHICLE INTO PARK AND TURNED THE IGNITION KEY OFF, THEN RESTARTED THE VEHICLE AND DROVE AWAY. THIS IS THE ONLY TIME THIS HAPPENED (LAST WEEK).....A COMPLETE LOSS OF POWER. I KNOW ISUZU SHARES PARTS WITH GM (E.G. MY TRANSMISSION IS GM). I HOPE THIS IS NOT AN EXAMPLE OF THAT GM IGNITION SWITCH PROBLEM.....BUT CERTAINLY HAS THE EXACT SAME SYMPTOMS OF IT. BUT IT IS VERY SCARY LOOSING COMPLETE POWER LIKE THAT. *TR
ENGINE IN MY 2002 ISUZU TROOPER BURNED UP THE MAIN ROD BEARING IN PISTON ONE DUE TO INSUFFICIENT OIL PRESSURE. ENGINE HAD TO BE REPLACED. TRUCK HAS 79K MILES ON IT AND WAS OUT OF WARRANTY. ISUZU OF NORTH AMERICA STATED NOTHING WOULD BE DONE VIA THE MANUFACTURER. I REPLACED THE ENGINE MYSELF AT A COST OF $4800. *TR
EXCESSIVE OIL CONSUMPTION. 1 QT. EVERY 600 MILES OR SO. 5 QTS BETWEEN OIL CHANGES (3000 MILES!) *JB
I TOOK MY 2002 ISUZU TROOPER LTD. TO THE DEALER (FITZGERALD DODGE ISUZU, ROCKVILLE, MARYLAND, COMPLAINING OF A GROWLING NOISE. WHILE IT WAS MIS-DIAGNOSED, THE DEALER INDICATED THAT THE UNDERPLATING ON THE CAR WAS SUFFERING FROM FAULTY WELDS, AND THAT IF I DIDN'T HAVE IT REMOVED IT WOULD FALL OFF WHILE I WAS DRIVING. I HAD TO PAY SEVERAL HUNDRED DOLLARS FOR THIS TO BE PERFORMED. I NOW HAVE NO UNDERPLATING TO PROTECT THE CAR. IT SEEMS TO ME THIS IS A MANUFACTURERS DEFECT, AND THE OWNER SHOULD NOT BE OBLIGATED TO REMOVE PORTIONS OF HER AUTOMOBILE TO CORRECT FAULTY MANUFACTURE, AND BE SUBJECTED TO RISK OF POTENTIAL DEATH OR INJURY TO HERSELF OR OTHERS ON THE ROAD. THE TROOPER ONLY HAS 45,000 MILES ON IT AND IS JUST OVER 3 YEARS OLD. *JB
DT: CONSUMER OWNS A 2002 ISUZU TROOPER. CONSUMER SAYS THAT WHEN PUTTING THE VEHICLE IN PARK THE INDICATOR POSITION WILL READ PARK, BUT THE VEHICLE WILL BE IN A NEUTRAL POSITION. THE VEHICLE CAN ROLE FREELY FORWARD OR BACKWARDS. THIS PROBLEM HAS BEEN GOING ON FOR ABOUT A YEAR. VEHICLE HAD BEEN TO DEALER 3 TIMES, BUT COULD NOT DO ANYTHING TO FIX THE PROBLEM. SHE WAS TOLD THEY COULD NOT DUPLICATE THE PROBLEM. CALLED WHEN VEHICLE WAS AT CONSUMER'S HOUSE AND PROBLEM WAS RECURRING. DEALER SENT SOMEONE OUT BUT STILL NOTHING WAS DONE ABOUT PROBLEM, WHICH DID NOT HAPPEN ALL THE TIME, AND DID NOT SEEM TO FOLLOW ANY PATTERN. THE MANUFACTURER WAS CONTACTED TWICE, BUT PROBLEM RECURRED. THE MANUFACTURER WANTED VEHICLE TO BE TOWED TO A REPAIR SHOP FOR FURTHER INSPECTION. *AK

WHEN THE CONSUMER APPROACHED A TRAIN TRACK, ANOTHER VEHICLE BEGAN TO APPROACH FROM THE OTHER DIRECTION. THE CONSUMER STOPPED AND SHIFTED FROM DRIVE TO REVERSE TO CLEAR UP THE ROAD WAY. THE TRANSMISSION JUMPED TO PARK AND LOCKED PREVENTING THE VEHICLE FROM MOVING. A TRAIN APPROACHED AND STRUCK THE VEHICLE. PLEASE PROVIDE FURTHER INFORMATION. *JB
WHEN CHANGING GEARS AND WITHOUT WARNING VEHICLE WOULD ACCELERATE. DEALER HAS BEEN NOTIFIED. *AK
WHEN IN MOTION FOR LONG PERIODS OF TIME, THE VEHICLE WILL LOSE ACCELERATION POWER. THIS WILL CONTINUE UNTIL CONSUMER IS ABLE TO PULL OFF THE ROAD TO RESTART THE ENGINE. THE EGR VALVE HAS REPEATEDLY BEEN REPLACED, BUT THE PROBLEM IS STILL IN EXISTENCE. *JG TS
WHILE DRIVING VEHICLE, IF YOU TRY TO PASS SOMEONE OR ACCELERATE, SOMETIMES THE VEHICLE WILL LOOSE POWER. CONSUMER STATES' ONCE WHEN VEHICLE LOSS POWER IT ALMOST RESULTED IN A REAR END COLLISION. PLEASE PROVIDE ANY FURTHER INFORMATION. TS
MOTOR WILL REV UP WHEN SITTING STILL AT A RED LIGHT AND TRY TO LUNGE FORWARD. I HAVE EVEN HAD IT GO 35 MILES AN HOUR WITHOUT MY FOOT EVEN BEING ON THE ACCELERATOR. I HAVE HAD MY TRUCK TO THE DEALER 3 TIMES NOW AND THEY KEEP SAYING THEY CAN NOT FIND ANYTHING WRONG. UNLESS THEY CAN SEE THE VEHICLE DO IT THEY CAN'T FIX IT. THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT DOES NOT COME ON AND THEY SAY UNTIL THAT HAPPENS THEY DON'T KNOW WHAT IS WRONG. DEALER REFUSES TO KEEP VEHICLE AND DRIVE IT UNTIL IT DOES IT SO THEY CAN SEE IT. THEY MAKE IT SOUND LIKE I AM MAKING THIS UP. THERE IS A PROBLEM AND IT NEEDS TO BE FIXED. I DO NOT WANT TO BE RESPONSIBLE FOR A ACCIDENT THAT I HAVE NO CONTROL OVER. THE STATE POLICE SAYS IT IS ILLEGAL TO DRIVE A UNSAFE VEHICLE ON THE STATE HIGHWAYS. I OWNED A BRAND NEW VEHICLE THAT IS ILLEGAL FOR ME TO DRIVE ON THE STATE HIGHWAY AND ISUZU WON'T DO ANYTHING ABOUT IT. I HAVE CONTACTED ISUZU CORPORATION AS WELL AS BEEN BACK TO THE DEALERSHIP 3 TIMES AND IT IS STILL DOING IT.*AK
WHEN AT A COMPLETE STOP VEHICLE WILL START TO REV. IF CONSUMER DOES NOT HAVE FOOT ON BRAKES VEHICLE WILL START TO MOVE FORWARD. CONTACTED DEALER, AND DEALER WAS NOT WILLING TO DO ANYTHING.*AK
The contact owns a 2001 Isuzu Trooper. The contact stated while entering and starting the vehicle, he noticed an extreme heat in the interior of the vehicle coming from the engine. The contact proceeded to shift the gear into drive however, while his foot was still on the brake pedal the vehicle independently accelerated. The contact had to pulled up the parking brake to stop the vehicle. The contact stated that the failure recurred several times afterwards. The contact took the vehicle to an independent mechanic who diagnosed the failure as a bypass for the fuel line and brake line failure that needed to be replaced however, the mechanic was unable to determine the cause for the heat entering the vehicle from the engine. The mechanic was able repair the vehicle however, the contact was concerned that the heat coming from the engine would eventually destroy the engine and the vehicle would need to be replaced. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 101,000.
LOW BEAM HEADLIGHT SWITCH STOPPED WORKING. ONLY HIGH BEAMS WORKED. HAD TO HAVE THE HEADLIGHT SWITCH REPLACED AT A COST OF $500. I SEE THAT THE SAME PROBLEM IS CURRENTLY BEING ADDRESSED AND RECALLED ON LATER MODEL ISUZU ASCENDERS AND GM VEHICLES. I BELIEVE ISUZU USED MANY GM PARTS IN THIS TROOPER AND IT SHOULD BE INCLUDED IN THE CURRENT RECALL SO THAT I CAN GET REIMBURSED FOR THE REPAIRS. *JS
MY SUV , ISUZU TROOPER OF 10YEARS, WAS PARKED IN A LIBRARY PARKING GARAGE AND AFTER IGNITION TURNED ON, I PUT IT IN REVERSE GEAR TO GET OUT OF THE PARKING LOT AND THE CAR RAPIDLY REVERSED AND BEFORE I COULD FIGURE OUT AND REACT, THE CAR SHOT LIKE A ROCKET TOWARDS THE FRONT , WHILE STILL IN REVERSE GEAR, AND I HAD NO CONTROL OF THE BRAKES OR STEERING WHEEL, IT RAMMED INTO A CONCRETE PILLAR AND GOT COMPLETELY TOTALED. AIRBAGS OPENED AND FRONT DOORS JAMMED AND I HAD SLIDE TO THE BACK TO ESCAPE. LUCKILY, CAR DID NOT CATCH ON FIRE OR EXPLODE. ( POLICE REPORT VERIFY THAT AFTER CRASH, CAR STILL FOUND TO BE IN REVERSE GEAR AND SUPRISED HOW CAR MOVED TOWARDS THE FRONT). A WEEK AGO, PRIOR TO THIS FREAKY CRASH, ( LUCKILY NO MINORS, SENIORS, HOMELESS WHO USUALLY WALK IN THE PARKING LOT WERE NOT PRESENT, OTHERWISE, THERE WOULD HAVE BEEN MULTIPLE DEATHS) MY CAR DEALERSHIP HAD DONE WORK ON MY CAR FOR NEARLY $1000.00. AND THEY REPLACED MODE SWITCH FOR MY AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION ( THERMOSTAT CHANGED; PISTON COVER CHANGED) AND DON'T KNOW WHAT ROLE IT PLAYED IN MY CAR'S CRASH. I AM PRETTY SURE ITS A MALFUNCTION . IT NEEDS TO BE ASSESSED AND FIGURED WHAT ROLE THE ABOVE INSTALLATION PLAYED IN THE CRASH WHICH COULD HAVE HAD DISASTROUS CONSEQUENCES. WAS IT DUE TO DEFECTIVE PART? INSURANCE COMPANY BLAMES IT ON ME AND SAY MY PREMIUMS WILL BE HIGHER SINCE ITS AT FAULT ACCIDENT DESPITE HEARING MY EXPERIENCE AND WITH EVIDENCE OF POLICE REPORT WHICH STATES THAT MY GEAR WAS STILL IN REVERSE. ( AFTER CRASHING HEAD ON AGAINST A CONCRETE PILLAR) THANK YOU FOR KEEPING PUBLIC SAFETY FIRST!
I WAS DRIVING DOWN THE HIGHWAY DOING 60 MILES AN HOUR WHEN MY "BRIDGESTONE TIRE" SEPARATED AT THE TREAD AND PEELED OFF LIKE A BANANA AND I THOUGHT I WAS GOING TO CRASH! THE TIRE STAYED INTACT AND THE BANDS WITH NO DEFLATION". I AM CONCERNED THAT THIS TIRE WILL BE OR WAS A RECALL. NO ACCIDENT LUCKILY, NO INJURY, LUCKILY BECAUSE IT WAS ON THE BACK PASSENGER. IF IT WAS ON THE FRONT I WOULD OF BEEN SCREWED FOR I WAS MAKING A 60 MILE AN HOUR CURVE ON THE HIGHWAY WITH FREQUENT TRAFFIC RUSH HOUR WITH A TOP HEAVY "ISUZU-TROOPER". THIS TIRE NEEDS TO BE INVESTIGATED!!!!! NEVER , AT AGE 46 , SEEN A TIRE PEEL THE TREAD OFF THE RADIAL BELT LIKE THIS LIKE A RETREAD! MUST SOMEONE DIE OR BE HURT BEFORE "BRIDGESTONE" IS HELD ACCOUNTABLE LIKE IN THE YEAR 2000 WHEN THEY HAD MULTIPLE DEATHS AND LAWSUITS? THANK YOU , PLEASE HELP. *TR
WHEN YOU STOP AT STOP SIGN OR LIGHT THE TRANSMISSION SHIFTS INTO NEUTRAL. WHENEVER YOU PUSH ON THE ACCELERATOR IT JERKS AND TAKES OFF. SOMETIMES IT TAKES A FEW MINUTES TO SHIFT IN GEAR. IT IS IN THE SHOP RIGHT NOW. THE MECHANIC SAID IT HAS TRANSMISSION PROBLEMS. *TR
2001 ISUZU TROOPER WITH FAULTY TRANSMISSION ACCUMULATOR AND BAD U-JOINT CUSTOMER STATES THAT THEY WANT US TO REVIEW THE SAFETY ISSUES**NAR**CC THE CONSUMER STATED HAVING 3 SEPARATE ISSUES WITH THE VEHICLE THE FIRST BEING A BAD U JOINT, THE SECOND BEING A FAULTY TRANSMISSION ACCUMULATOR AND THE THIRD WAS HAVING TO REPLACE A LONG ENGINE BLOCK. THE CONSUMER WAS ALSO INFORMED THE ELECTRICAL HYDRAULIC BRAKE SYSTEM NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE CONSUMER STATED RECENTLY REQUESTED A GOODWILL ADJUSTMENT AND WAS ULTIMATELY DENIED BY THE DEALER DUE TO THE FACT THE VEHICLE WAS 40,000 MILES OVER THE BASE WARRANTY.*TR
2001 ISUZU TROOPER FUEL TANK. CUSTOMER WANTS TO REIMBURSED FOR REPAIRS**CC THE GAS TANK HAD RUSTED THROUGH AND WAS LEAKING GAS. *JB
WE HAVE HAD TO ADD 1-2 QTS OF OIL EVERY COUPLE THOUSAND MILES ALTHOUGH WE DID NOT SEE AN OIL LEAK (NO MARKS ON THE DRIVEWAY) MECHANIC COULD FIND NO OIL LEAK OR PROBLEM OUR CHECK ENGINE LIGHT HAS BEEN ON,AND MECHANIC SAID WE NEEDED EMISSIONS SENSOR REPLACED. WE DID REPLACE IT. ON OUR WAY TO THANKSGIVING IN OKLAHOMA FROM MICHIGAN OUR ENGINE BLEW ! WE ARE NOW WITHOUT THAT VEHICLE BUT STILL MAKING PAYMENTS. A DEALERSHIP IN TULSA SAID THAT THOSE ENGINES ARE REPLACED A LOT AT HIS SHOP DUE TO THIS PROBLEM. HE SAID THAT THERE IS CARBON BUILD UP IN THE VALVE THAT GOES TO THE ENGINE CAUSING THE OIL TO BURN UP. AFTER SO LONG OF IT BEING BUILT UP IT GETS CLOGGED AND ENDS UP BLOWING. HE SAID IF WE HAD BEEN TAKING THE CAR TO AN ISUZU DEALER TO GET THE OIL CHANGED THEY KNOW ABOUT IT AND CAN CLEAN IT. PROBLEM FOR US IS THERE ISN'T AN ISUZU DEALER IN THE CITY WE LIVE IN SO WE DIDN'T HAVE A CHANCE. I BELIEVE ISUZU SHOULD HAVE SENT A LETTER TO TROOPER OWNERS NOTIFYING THEM OF THIS DEFECT SO AS NOT TO HAVE TO GO THROUGH THIS PROBLEM SINCE IT CAN BE AVOIDED. *JB

The basics
How to read this data
Complaints, recalls, investigations — here’s what each number actually tells you about a used Isuzu Trooper, in plain English.
What is an NHTSA Complaint?
An NHTSA safety complaint is a report filed directly by a vehicle owner or driver describing a safety-related issue. Anyone can submit a complaint at NHTSA.gov. The number of complaints is a signal of how common a problem is — but complaints per model-year matter more than raw totals, since popular vehicles naturally receive more reports. The Isuzu Trooper has 90 complaints on record across 3 model years.
What is a Safety Recall?
A safety recall is a mandatory campaign issued by NHTSA when a vehicle component poses an unreasonable risk to safety or does not comply with federal motor vehicle safety standards. Unlike complaints (which are owner-reported), recalls are formally investigated and confirmed by regulators. Manufacturers must fix recalled vehicles free of charge. The Isuzu Trooper has 3 recall campaigns in the NHTSA database.
What Are Crash Complaints?
Crash complaints are NHTSA filings where the owner indicates a crash occurred as part of the incident. 8 of the Isuzu Trooper's 90 complaints involved a crash. This metric is particularly important because it indicates how often defects resulted in actual collisions — a key safety signal beyond general reliability.
How Is the Reliability Verdict Calculated?
The reliability verdict (Below Average) is generated by analyzing the vehicle's total complaints, recall history, crash complaint ratio, fire complaint ratio, and top component failures relative to class averages. This verdict gives buyers a quick interpretation before they review year-level details and VIN-level history. It should be treated as one decision input, not a substitute for a VIN-specific report.
Why Do Newer Years Have Fewer Complaints?
Newer model years appear to have fewer complaints because there has been less time for owners to file them. Complaints accumulate over years of ownership. A 2020 model year vehicle will typically show fewer complaints than a 2015 model year even if it is less reliable — simply because fewer owners have had time to report issues. Focus on complaints per year of market presence when comparing across model years.
Fleet Data vs. Individual VIN
Everything on this page reflects aggregated data across all Isuzu Trooper vehicles on the road — not any specific car. Two Isuzu Trooper vehicles of the same year can have very different histories: one may have been in three accidents and have an open recall; another may be clean. A VIN check gives you the individual car's history: accidents, title brands, odometer records, service history, and real-time recall status.
What Are NHTSA Investigations?
When NHTSA receives a pattern of related safety complaints, it opens a formal investigation. A Preliminary Evaluation (PE) is the first stage — NHTSA determines if a safety defect may exist. If evidence is strong, it escalates to an Engineering Analysis (EA), which can result in a mandatory recall. The Isuzu Trooper has 0 investigations on record (0 active). Investigations listed above may have already led to the recalls shown on this page.
