I BROUGHT MY CAR TO TWO DIFFERENT MECHANICS IN MY AREA AND BOTH TOLD ME THE FRAME HAS SEVERE CORROSION AND IS MIGHT BE UNSAFE TO DRIVE ON. THEY SHOWED ME MULTIPLE HOLES IN THE FRAME ON THE BACK PASSENGER CORNER OF THE VEHICLE. IT LOOKS SO BAD THAT I COULD JUST BREAK THE FRAME WITH A HAMMER. THE VEHICLE PASSED INSPECTION, BUT THEY TOLD ME I SHOULD TAKE IT TO A WELDER TO GET IT REPAIRED. IS THIS SOMETHING I CAN DRIVE ON? AM I RISKING MY LIFE? IT APPEARS THAT THE FRAME WAS RECALLED ON THE 2002 MODELS, BUT NOT THE 2003 AND 2004 MODELS WHICH USE THE SAME EXACT FRAME! I HAVE NO IDEA WHY. SOUNDS PRETTY STUPID AND MIGHT RISK SOMEONE'S LIFE. *JS

3 InjuriesSERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULICJul 2007

NOT EVEN A YEAR AFTER PURCHASING MY 2003 ISUZU AXIOM, I HAVE HAD MULTIPLE ISSUES WITH THE BRAKES. ON 5 OR MORE OCCASIONS, I HAVE HAD TO COME TO A SUDDEN STOP OR HAVE PRESSED THE BRAKES LIGHTLY ON A BUMPY SERVICE AND HAVE HAD VERY POOR RESULTS. THE RESULTS INCLUDE A SENSE OF THE BRAKES NOT WORKING AT ALL. BEFORE I PURCHASED THE AXIOM, I OWED A 98 ISUZU RODEO THAT HAD VERY SIMILAR BRAKING ISSUES. I HAD A WRECK IN MY 1998 RODEO WHERE I FEEL THAT MY BRAKES FAILED WHEN I HAD TO COME TO A SUDDEN STOP IN RUSH HOUR TRAFFIC. THAT WAS 3 YEARS AGO AND I STILL SUFFER ON A DAILY BASIS FROM THAT CAR ACCIDENT. I RECALL THAT I PRESSED MY BRAKES HARD AND I HAD TO LET OFF THE BRAKE AND THEN PRESS THEM AGAIN FOR THE BRAKES TO WORK. THIS IS THE SAME ISSUE THAT I HAVE TO NOW DEAL WITH ON MY AXIOM. THIS PROBLEM DOES NOT HAPPEN JUST WHEN YOU NEED TO BRAKE SUDDENLY. I HAVE HAD ISSUE WHEN STOPPED AT A RED LIGHT.YOU KNOW WHEN YOU LET OFF THE BRAKE SOME TO INCH FORWARD A LITTLE.....MY CAR WILL SOMETIMES LURCH AS THOUGH YOU HAVE PRESSED THE GAS. IT IS A HAZARD AND I REALLY THINK THAT THERE IS AN ISSUE WITH THE ISUZU BRAKES. MY CAR NOW HAS 34,000 MILES ON IT AND I HAVE BEEN HAVING MY BRAKES CHECKED AND REPLACED SEVERAL TIMES. MY BRAKES CONSTANTLY MAKE A NOISE AND SHUTTERING. I AM TOLD THAT THIS IS MY REAR BRAKES....IT DOES NOT GO AWAY AND I HAVE THEM REPLACED AND ADJUSTED SEVERAL TIMES, AS WELL AS REPLACING THE FRONT BRAKES. *AK

Crash 2 InjuriesSERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULICApr 2007

I HAVE HAD A PROBLEM WITH THE ANTI-LOCK BRAKE SYSTEM VIRTUALLY SINCE I PURCHASED THE CAR IN NOV 2003. WHEN I BRAKE ON A BUMPY OR WET ROAD, OR WHEN I HAVE TO BRAKE HARD TO STOP IN AN EMERGENCY, THE CAR RATTLES AND MAKE S GRINDING SOUND. IT ALSO TAKE EXTRA LONG TO SLOW THE VEHICLE MUCH LESS STOP. THE LAST TIME I HAD THIS PROBLEM I WAS DRIVING IN TRAFFIC AND A VAN SEVERAL VEHICLES IN FRONT OF ME STOPPED TO MAKE AN ILLEGAL U-TURN. I TEND TO KEEP A GREATER DISTANCE BETWEEN MY CAR AND THE CAR IN FRONT OF ME DUE TO THE BRAKE ISSUE. REGARDLESS, THE ROAD I WAS ON HAS A FEW BUMPS. AT THE POINT OF ATTEMPTING TO STOP AND AVOID HITTING THE VEHICLE IN FRONT OF ME THE BRAKES WENT INTO ANTI-LOCK AND DIDN'T STOP MY CAR BEFORE I HIT THE CAR. I HAVE ALREADY CHANGE THE BRAKE TWO OTHER TIMES AND HAD ROTORS REPLACED ONE. I WILL BE NEEDING NEW BRAKES AND ROTORS WITHIN THE NEXT 5-10K MILES. FOUR SETS OF BRAKES IN LESS THAN 70K MILES SCREAMS THAT THERE IS A PROBLEM BESIDE THE VEHICLE NOT STOPPING, OR SLOWING SIGNIFICANTLY IN AN EMERGENCY. *JB

SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULICApr 2007

I HAVE A 2003 ISUZU AXIOM THAT HAS A BRAKING PROBLEM. WHEN YOU COME TO A STOP YOU GET T VIBRATION IN THE BRAKE PEDAL. IF FEELS AS IF THE VEHICLE IS GOING TO JUST SHAKE COMPLETELY APART. THE VIBRATING STARTS FROM THE BACK AND MOVES TO THE FRONT OF THE VEHICLE WITH THIS ENORMOUS VIBRATING SOUND. I HAVE TAKEN THIS VEHICLE TO SEVERAL DEALERSHIPS ACROSS THE UNITED STATES AND NO ONE SEEMS TO KNOW WHAT THE PROBLEM IS, ALL I KEEP DOING IS GETTING THE RUN AROUND, AND THIS HAS BEEN HAPPENING FOR ABOUT FOUR YEARS. NOW AND I DON'T KNOW WHERE TO GO TO TRY AND RESOLVE THE PROBLEM. NOBODY ACTS LIKE THEY REALLY WANT TO HELP. I' HAD THE BRAKES REPLACED THREE TIMES, HAD THE ROTORS REPLACED ONCE UNDER WARRANTY.*AK

ENGINEJan 2016

WHILE DRIVING ON A CITY STREET, VEHICLE COMPLETELY LOST POWER AND CAME TO A COMPLETE STOP BLOCKING TRAFFIC. SHOP ULTIMATELY DIAGNOSED THE PROBLEM AS THE BOLT HOLDING THE CRANKSHAFT SHEARED OFF, DESTROYING AN ENGINE HEAD IN THE PROCESS. THIS SHOP SPECIALIZES IN WORKING WITH JAPANESE ENGINES AND SAID "THERE ARE REPORTS OF THIS HAPPENING ALL OVER THE COUNTRY" WITH THIS MAKE/MODEL/YEAR. SHOP SAID THE BOLT ISN'T OF HIGH ENOUGH QUALITY TO SUPPORT LONG-TERM USE AND NOW RECOMMENDS REPLACING THE BOLT EVERY 80,000 MILES. TOTAL REPAIR COST MORE THAN $2000.

FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEMJun 2015

I OWN 2004 ISUZU AXIOM 3.5L WITH 94,000 PLUS MILES. ON 6/01/15 I WAS DRIVING MY VEHICLE AND I NOTICED THAT THE CAR SEEMED LIKE IT HAD TO HEAVY. THE VEHICLE STARTS AND RUNS BUT VERY LOW POWER. THERE IS A 'REDUCED POWER" WARNING ON THE DASHBOARD . I CHECKED IT OVER AND NOTICED THAT THE GASOLINE TANK IS WET WITH FUEL COMING OUT FROM THE TOP OF TANK IN THE FUEL PUMP AREA. Before you buy, check the exact Isuzu Axiom

These pages show model-year patterns across 3 years. Enter a VIN to verify the exact vehicle's accident history, title brands, odometer records, and open recall status before purchase.

The basics

How to read this data

Complaints, recalls, investigations — here’s what each number actually tells you about a used Isuzu Axiom, in plain English.

01

What is an NHTSA Complaint?

An NHTSA safety complaint is a report filed directly by a vehicle owner or driver describing a safety-related issue. Anyone can submit a complaint at NHTSA.gov. The number of complaints is a signal of how common a problem is — but complaints per model-year matter more than raw totals, since popular vehicles naturally receive more reports. The Isuzu Axiom has 156 complaints on record across 3 model years.

02

What is a Safety Recall?

A safety recall is a mandatory campaign issued by NHTSA when a vehicle component poses an unreasonable risk to safety or does not comply with federal motor vehicle safety standards. Unlike complaints (which are owner-reported), recalls are formally investigated and confirmed by regulators. Manufacturers must fix recalled vehicles free of charge. The Isuzu Axiom has 9 recall campaigns in the NHTSA database.

03

What Are Crash Complaints?

Crash complaints are NHTSA filings where the owner indicates a crash occurred as part of the incident. 18 of the Isuzu Axiom's 156 complaints involved a crash. This metric is particularly important because it indicates how often defects resulted in actual collisions — a key safety signal beyond general reliability.

04

How Is the Reliability Verdict Calculated?

The reliability verdict (Poor) is generated by analyzing the vehicle's total complaints, recall history, crash complaint ratio, fire complaint ratio, and top component failures relative to class averages. This verdict gives buyers a quick interpretation before they review year-level details and VIN-level history. It should be treated as one decision input, not a substitute for a VIN-specific report.

05

Why Do Newer Years Have Fewer Complaints?

Newer model years appear to have fewer complaints because there has been less time for owners to file them. Complaints accumulate over years of ownership. A 2020 model year vehicle will typically show fewer complaints than a 2015 model year even if it is less reliable — simply because fewer owners have had time to report issues. Focus on complaints per year of market presence when comparing across model years.

06

Fleet Data vs. Individual VIN

Everything on this page reflects aggregated data across all Isuzu Axiom vehicles on the road — not any specific car. Two Isuzu Axiom vehicles of the same year can have very different histories: one may have been in three accidents and have an open recall; another may be clean. A VIN check gives you the individual car's history: accidents, title brands, odometer records, service history, and real-time recall status.

07

What Are NHTSA Investigations?

When NHTSA receives a pattern of related safety complaints, it opens a formal investigation. A Preliminary Evaluation (PE) is the first stage — NHTSA determines if a safety defect may exist. If evidence is strong, it escalates to an Engineering Analysis (EA), which can result in a mandatory recall. The Isuzu Axiom has 0 investigations on record (0 active). Investigations listed above may have already led to the recalls shown on this page.
