Component/system that failed: Panoramic sunroof glass on a 2023 Infiniti QX50. Date of Incident: July 21, 2025 at approximately 8am. Incident description: While my daughter was driving on the interstate at normal speed, the panoramic sunroof suddenly and spontaneously shattered. There was no impact, no visible object, and no warning. The explosion of glass was loud and violent. Safety risk: Thankfully, the sunroof shade was closed at the time of the incident. Had it been open, glass would have rained down inside the cabin, potentially causing serious or even fatal injuries. This was a terrifying failure with high risk to life and safety, particularly at highway speeds. Immediately after the incident I called Infiniti of Memphis where we purchased the vehicle brand new, and it is currently under warranty. I was notified that since there isnโ€™t a current recall anything glass related is not included under warranty and I would need to file a claim under my insurance. We were forced to file a claim through our insurance provider to repair the damage โ€” despite no fault on our part. Warning signs or prior symptoms: There were no warning lights, no abnormal sounds, and no signs of weakness or cracking. The glass failed without warning. Cause: UNKNOWN โ€” but based on public reports, thousands of similar incidents have occurred in other Infiniti and Nissan models. This appears to be part of a known manufacturer defect currently involved in active class-action litigation (Johnson v. Nissan North America) regarding spontaneous sunroof explosions.

Vehicle is prone to stalling while on the road extremely dangerous starting issues after long trips

FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCEJan 2024

The contact owns a 2023 Infiniti QX50. The contact stated while driving 28-29 MPH at nighttime, she noticed an animal in the roadway and decelerated. The contact stated that while the vehicle was approximately 2 ft. away from the animal, the vehicle made a loud sound, and the hood popped up and partially covered the windshield. The contact veered to the side of the road. The contact stated that she sat on a pillow in the front driver's seat, and she was able to drive to her residence at low speed. The vehicle was taken to the dealer the following morning. The dealer informed the contact that the vehicle was designed with the Pop-Up Engine Hood For Pedestrian Protection feature, in which the pedestrian safety sensor in the bumper, signaled the hood to pop up while the vehicle was near the animal on the road. The dealer informed the contact that the vehicle operated as designed and charged a repair fee for the hood pistons replacement. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and sent a field technician, who diagnosed the vehicle and informed the contact that the vehicle operated as designed. However, the contact stated that based on the Owner's Manual, the feature was designed to pop up the hood in the event of a frontal collision with a pedestrian. The contact stated that the vehicle had not collided with the animal. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 5,200.

FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE,POWER TRAINOct 2023

The contact owns a 2023 Infiniti QX50. The contact stated that upon pressing the start button and starting the vehicle, the vehicle sputtered. While driving attempting to drive, the vehicle failed to move. There were no warning lights illuminated. The vehicle was towed to the local dealer, who was unable to duplicate the failure. While driving, the vehicle failed to accelerate properly. There was an abnormally loud grinding sound detected. The contact stated that the vehicle was stuck in first gear. The vehicle was towed back to the local dealer, where it was diagnosed that the fuel pump needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired. The manufacturer was contacted by the contactโ€™s attorney. The failure mileage was approximately 62,018.

Vehicle purchased from dealer 3/5/25 (brand new). Noticed struggle to start/shaking vehicle/weak power, within first week. Malfunction indicator light came on 4/15/25, brought into dealership for testing. Data showed fail/pass misfires upwards of 30 times. Diagnosed as fuel injector pump misfire. Part was replaced and picked up the vehicle 5/8/25. Vehicle misfired again on 5/9/25. Brought into dealership for further testing; service advisor stated that the misfire was "likely due to air in the new pump." Noticeable misfire again on 5/27/25, no malfunction indicator light came on, notified service advisor. 5/30/25 vehicle misfired significantly, malfunction indicator light came on again, brought in for service. 6/11/25 service advisor stated they are doing a "pin fit repair" to refit all the connector pins for the ignition coils. I don't feel safe in this car. It's brand new, and should perform as such. When it misfires, I can barely drive past 30mph. It shakes violently, and I don't know whether it is safe to be driving it. Dealership doesn't seem to understand what the actual problem is.

POWER TRAIN,ENGINEMar 2025

My qx50 is currently back in the shop. So far Iโ€™ve spent about $12,000 on engine and transmission repairs and the NHTSA doesnโ€™t seem to be doing anything about it. Now it needs a new โ€œignition coilโ€ for another $1,000. Iโ€™m just at a loss for words!! Iโ€™m attaching the โ€œReview of servicesโ€ that was conducted earlier this month, when my Infiniti was in the shop and the diagnostic codes that came up when I had to have the vehicle towed there, less than a week later.

๐Ÿ’ฅ CrashAIR BAGSFeb 2025

On December 24, 2024 I was in a car accident where my car did make impact twice after spinning out of control due to black ice. The first impact occurred hitting a car then the final impact occurred when the car was flung into the metal barricade after spinning. The air bags did NOT deploy during this accident and I was very concerned for my safety and my life.

VEHICLE SPEED CONTROLJul 2024

I was driving and came to a red light behind other cars. I was completely stopped with brakes applied and vehicle suddenly lurched forward, RPMโ€™s reved up over 3,000 without me accelerating. I was about two blocks from home and was able to make it by slowly driving and jerking all the way. Mechanic codes were 720 output speed sensor. Very alarming situation! I could have easily hit the car in front of me if I would have been any closer, or worst yet a pedestrian! Appears to be critical safety issue and something that may need to be recalled.

๐Ÿ”ฅ FirePOWER TRAIN,ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEMJun 2024

so after my initial report about my engine catching fire on the highway, I received an invoice for $5,000 for a used engine with 80k miles on it; plus another $2800 for the service fee. I already put down about $3900 for the engine repair. The mechanic sent me pictures of the engine with the holes on it that caused the damage (or the holes might have happened during the fire). Iโ€™m attaching photos sent to me, from my mechanic, showing the holes/damage on the engine, for your consideration and a photo of the initial repair bill (including receipt of my deposit) for your review โ€ฆ also, I still need to pay another $4300 to pick it up, but he said my check engine light is still on due to a transmission, that may be related to the valve body failing. What are these qx50s still being sold?? On the car forums and YouTube, there are so many issues with the engines and the transmissions (including the 450k that are currently under investigation). And their consumer affairs dept is extremely hostile about the situation, when you call into the infiniti office/headquarters. These defective engines/ transmissions need to be recalled, as soon as possible. Theyโ€™re extremely dangerous and Infiniti is not taking responsibility for the problem. Why is the govt not intervening on behalf of the infiniti owners??

AIR BAGSMay 2024

The contact owns a 2016 Infiniti QX50. The contact stated that while driving or parked, the โ€œAir Bags Deactivatedโ€ and โ€œSeat Belt Detachedโ€ warning lights illuminated. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic and a local dealer. The independent mechanic performed an electronic reset on the vehicle and the lights were off for one day; however, the failure reoccurred. The independent mechanic related the failure with the NHTSA Campaign Number: 16V244000 (Air Bags) however, the vehicle was not included in the recall. The local dealer diagnosed the vehicle and confirmed a failure with the sensor module for the air bags. The contact approved the repair; however, the vehicle was not yet repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 54,000.

POWER TRAINMay 2024

The contact owns a 2016 Infiniti QX50. The contact stated that while driving at an undisclosed speed, the check engine warning light illuminated. The contact stated that following the warning light illumination the vehicle hesitated to accelerate. The vehicle was taken to the mechanic and diagnosed as a speed sensor module located inside the transmission. The contact was advised the module being in the transmission caused the transmission to overheat requiring valve body replacement. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 110,000.

๐Ÿ”ฅ FireENGINEMay 2024

๐Ÿ”ฅ FireENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEMMay 2024

There are 2 check engine codes that came up as an issue for my vehicle, out of the blue: P0720 and P0500. I reached out to my mechanic and he couldn't fix it. So my plan was to take it to the dealership at the end of this month; however, while driving the vehicle back from my sister's house, the bottom of the car caught on fire and I had to pull over to jump out the car with my children. Called 911. The police and fire dept came, but the fire had gone out by that time, so the officer had the vehicle towed off the highway. Looked into the issue online and apparently it's very common. One Infiniti dealership said that he fixes about 30 per month. Why didn't Infiniti issue a recall for this very serious, hazardous situation? Where is their due diligence to fix this problem for their customers? Why are they letting so many vehicles fail? What happened to reasonable due care? Is it not enough that they are aware of this issue and wonโ€™t recall it, but what about the physical danger that they are putting us in? And the emotional distress they caused my children, having to jump out of their vehicle on a highway in the middle of the night? Doesnโ€™t Infiniti have a minimum safety requirement of due care to mitigate hazards for its customers?

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,AIR BAGSJul 2023

The contact owns a 2016 Infiniti QX50. The contact stated that while driving at an undisclosed speed, she attempted to engage the horn to prevent a collision; however, the horn was inoperable. There was no warning light illuminated. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic, where it was diagnosed and determined that the clockspring had melted onto the horn relay. The vehicle was not repaired. An unknown dealer was notified of the failure. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 118,274.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,UNKNOWN OR OTHERJul 2023

Purchased vehicle on 4/23/23 from Carmax. Discovered horn was not working 5/10 when a truck swerved into my lane on the freeway. Carmax refused to refund money under 30 day guarantee stating I drove over 1500 miles. Prior to purchasing I signed documents stating the car was in perfect condition after 3 point inspection , horn included . They scheduled a appointment at the end of the month leaving me with no transportation to get to work . After complaining to the BBB they denied anything was wrong with the car, even after doing a appraisal on 6/10 where I stated the horn was not functioning. I took the car for a third party diagnostic and the mechanic determined a defective horn relay and spiral cable . I have not driven this car at all since 5/13 except 6/10 when I attempted to sell it back to the dealership twice.

This is the 3rd instance of my car rolling backwards down the driveway. Both the first and second instances of uncontrolled rolling happened in 2016. Only the second instance was caught on camera. I shared the video with Infiniti and was instructed to bring the car in for an inspection. I went in for the inspection in December 2016 and they reported that there were no issues (despite video evidence). Today, December 2, 2022, the car (while gear shifted into park) again rolled down the driveway, across a street and hit my neighbor's house. This was all caught on video as well. I posted the video on the manufacturers social media site. See below for the email I sent to the dealership after they contacted me. I've also uploaded the videos to YouTube because they're in MP4 format and I'm unaware of how to convert them to the format required for this submission. The titles of the videos are: Infiniti QX50 Rolling Backwards December 2016 and Infiniti QX50 Rolling Backwards December 2022. Both were published today, December 2, 2022.

The Display / Navigation screen does not always light up. Some time it works when you start the car. Other times it tries for a awhile be fore it starts to work. When it lights up everything from what I can tell works normally. When it does not light up. The AC works by its self, but you can not turn it off or adjust it. The warning sensors work, but Camera does not work. Radio does not work. Because we do not live close to an Infiniti dealer. I took it to a North Strand Nissan dealer 2592 Highway 9 Little River, SC 29566 phone 843-390-7777. They performed a diagnosis and found internal failure in the system. They told us they would need to start with replacing radio unit and then check further at a cost of $6,500. Yet when they moved the car outside to park it everything worked for them. And when we picked up the car everything work until we turned it off. We just drove it 10 hours on a trip. Sometimes it worked when starting up the car. Other times it took an hour or so for it to work. The safety problems is when the screen flashes trying to start at night. It is distracting. Also backup camera does not work if the screen does not light up. Car has 39,000 miles on it Thanks

These pages show model-year patterns across 10years. Enter a VIN to verify the exact vehicle's accident history, title brands, odometer records, and open recall status before purchase.

๐Ÿ“– Understanding This Data

๐Ÿ“‹

What is an NHTSA Complaint?

An NHTSA safety complaint is a report filed directly by a vehicle owner or driver describing a safety-related issue. Anyone can submit a complaint at NHTSA.gov. The number of complaints is a signal of how common a problem is โ€” but complaints per model-year matter more than raw totals, since popular vehicles naturally receive more reports. The Infiniti QX50 has 246 complaints on record across 10 model years.

๐Ÿ””

What is a Safety Recall?

A safety recall is a mandatory campaign issued by NHTSA when a vehicle component poses an unreasonable risk to safety or does not comply with federal motor vehicle safety standards. Unlike complaints (which are owner-reported), recalls are formally investigated and confirmed by regulators. Manufacturers must fix recalled vehicles free of charge. The Infiniti QX50 has 11 recall campaigns in the NHTSA database.

๐Ÿ’ฅ

What Are Crash Complaints?

Crash complaints are NHTSA filings where the owner indicates a crash occurred as part of the incident. 9 of the Infiniti QX50's 246 complaints involved a crash. This metric is particularly important because it indicates how often defects resulted in actual collisions โ€” a key safety signal beyond general reliability.

๐Ÿงญ

How Is the Reliability Verdict Calculated?

The reliability verdict (Poor) is generated by analyzing the vehicle's total complaints, recall history, crash complaint ratio, fire complaint ratio, and top component failures relative to class averages. This verdict gives buyers a quick interpretation before they review year-level details and VIN-level history. It should be treated as one decision input, not a substitute for a VIN-specific report.

๐Ÿ“Š

Why Do Newer Years Have Fewer Complaints?

Newer model years appear to have fewer complaints because there has been less time for owners to file them. Complaints accumulate over years of ownership. A 2020 model year vehicle will typically show fewer complaints than a 2015 model year even if it is less reliable โ€” simply because fewer owners have had time to report issues. Focus on complaints per year of market presence when comparing across model years.

๐Ÿ”

Fleet Data vs. Individual VIN

Everything on this page reflects aggregated data across all Infiniti QX50 vehicles on the road โ€” not any specific car. Two Infiniti QX50 vehicles of the same year can have very different histories: one may have been in three accidents and have an open recall; another may be clean. A VIN check gives you the individual car's history: accidents, title brands, odometer records, service history, and real-time recall status.

๐Ÿ”Ž

What Are NHTSA Investigations?

When NHTSA receives a pattern of related safety complaints, it opens a formal investigation. A Preliminary Evaluation (PE) is the first stage โ€” NHTSA determines if a safety defect may exist. If evidence is strong, it escalates to an Engineering Analysis (EA), which can result in a mandatory recall. The Infiniti QX50 has 0 investigations on record (0 active). Investigations listed above may have already led to the recalls shown on this page.
