What the complaint data suggests

Poor
Editorial interpretation of NHTSA public complaint data. Source: nhtsa.gov. Complaints are owner-submitted and do not confirm a defect. Methodology

Data engine & NHTSA methodology by Eduard Batog, Co-founder & Data Engineer. How we calculate this.

The HYUNDAI GENESIS has 1,421 NHTSA complaints and 20 recalls on record. 84 complaints involve crash-related incidents. This data reflects owner-reported issues submitted to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

Key findings
  • 1,421 total complaints filed with NHTSA
  • 20 federal recall campaigns
  • 84 crash-related complaints on record
Top concerns
  • Review NHTSA complaint history for the most-reported components
  • Check recall completion status at nhtsa.gov/recalls
  • Verify service records for frequently complained components
Worst years

Consult the by-year breakdown to identify model years with elevated complaint rates.

Best years

Consult the by-year breakdown to identify model years with fewer reported issues.

What to check before buying used
  • Run a VIN check on the specific vehicle you are considering
  • Verify all open recalls are completed at nhtsa.gov/recalls
  • Request service records for the most-reported complaint components
  • Have a certified mechanic inspect the vehicle before purchase
Data note: NHTSA complaints are consumer-submitted and do not confirm a manufacturing defect Complaint volume is influenced by sales volume β€” popular models naturally accumulate more complaints

ENGINENov 2025

While driving at approximately 70MPH on the highway, my 2014 Hyundai Tucson Limited suddenly locked up with no warning lights, no noise and no prior symptoms. The engine completely seized, causing immediate loss of power. I was barely able to coast off the highway exit to a final stop on the feeder shoulder, in a desolate area. The vehicle has always been properly maintained and is in excellent condition. Upon research, I learned that Hyundai has known of internal engine defects caused by metallic debris left from manufacturing since 2010, which can cause bearing failure and engine seizure. My Tucson's failure matches the same pattern described in Hyundai's Theta II engine recall and warranty extension campaigns. This sudden failure created an extremely dangerous situation at highway speed and possibility of injury while being stranded on an open road. Many owners, myself included, were never properly notified of the risks. I am filing this report because this incident represents a serious safety defect and potential recurrence among similar vehicles that may not yet be covered by recall. I respectfully request that the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration investigate this issue and ensure Hyundai expands its recall and warranty coverage to include affected 2014 Hyundai Tucson Limited vehicles exhibiting this defect that was well-known to the Hyundai Corporation. Date of Incident: October 23,2025 in Houston Texas. Vehicle towed to Hyundai dealer which diagnosed Engine Seized and currently awaiting Warranty Extension Approval (TXXC/TXXI)

SERVICE BRAKESApr 2024

I have had intermittent brake pedal to the floor issue for the past two years. It started off occasionally, but turned into daily. It's very very dangerous as the brakes barely work. To remedy, I had the brake rotors and pads changed, brake fluid flushed. Did not fix the issue. Had the Master Cylinder replaced and it fixed the issue, but then two days later my brakes started binding (opposite problem). Replaced the HECU / ABS Module and still have the same issue. Now the car is not drivable because the brakes are binding. I called a local Hyundai Dealership to see if they would try a goodwill HECU service, since previous years Hyundai Genesis were recalled with the exact same issue, but they said they would not do it for me. So I am trying to work out the issue through independent mechanics. This is a very dangerous issue as the brakes do not work and is a widespread issue affecting multiple BH model Hyundai Genesis owners.

SERVICE BRAKES,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCEDec 2023

All my dash lites came on dealership said the HECU unit was bad not under recall the coup is but the 4 door isn’t I’ve been waiting a month for part on backorder can’t drive my car too dangerous brakes may not work if my sedan is not under recall then why are the parts on backorder with no ETA car not safe to drive yet can’t get fixed

SERVICE BRAKESDec 2023

My HECU unit failed at only 61k miles. My car is a sedan not a coup, so Hyundai does not want to cover it under the recall. This is redicules, my safety is at steak

FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCEDec 2023

HECU failure only has 61k this is an ongoing issue with Hyundai. Hyundai covers the 2014 coup, but not the sedan in a recall for this issue. I don’t understand the difference.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEMMay 2023

It's termed as a "Dead Pedal" with the accelerator pedal sensor as to when the accelerator pedal is applied to move the car, the signal to apply gas to the engine to move it , doe's not happen, and the car will not move, momentarily causing a very unsafe situation in traffic. this problem is sporadic and you never know when it will happen. to my knowledge this is happening in the 2009 to 2015 models Hyundai Genesis cars with the 3.8 and 4.6 and 5.0 engines. Any car with the drive by wire is effected with this problem, and should be looked into and repaired. I have not gone to the dealer with this problem and there is no check engine light on when it happens.

The contact stated that the check engine warning light was illuminated. The contact took the vehicle to the local dealer, where he was informed that the sound was normal. The contact stated that the sound remained. The manufacturer had not been informed of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 65,000.

I GOT INTO AN ACCIDENT IN OCTOBER 2019 WHERE I WAS REAR ENDED AND CARRIED INTO ANOTHER VEHICLE BUT MY AIR BAGS DID NOT DEPLOY ALTHOUGH MY HEADRESTS DID DEPLOY BUT PRIOR TO THE ACCIDENT MY CAR WOULD FISHTAIL WHEN MAKING TURNS WHEN THE ROADS WERE WET AND WHILE DRIVING ON THE HIGHWAY TRYING TO MERGE INTO TRAFFIC MY CAR LOSES ACCELERATION ALL ON ITS OWN AND THEN GRADUALLY PICKS UP SPEED AGAIN I'VE ALMOST GOT HIT SEVERAL TIMES BECAUSE OF THIS. ALSO MY CAR HAS SHUT OFF ON ITS OWN IN TRAFFIC WITH HEAVY TRAFFIC IT WAS VERY SCARY WE DIDN'T KNOW WHAT WAS HAPPENING TO THE CAR AND THIS HAS HAPPENED TWICE. NOW MY CAR IS SHOWING A LOT OF HARD CODE ERRORS FROM THE ABS/ESC SYSTEM TO POWER SEAT MODULES THEY SAY IT'S SOMETHING WRONG WITH THE COMPUTER SYSTEM ITSELF BECAUSE IT DOESN'T NOTIFY YOU OF ANY ISSUES ON THE DASHBOARD AT ALL. AND TODAY I TOOK IT TO A MECHANIC SHOP AND MULTIPLE B CODES SHOWED UP WHICH DIDN'T MAKE ANY SENSE EVEN CAM SENSOR CODES AND I JUST GOT THIS CAR IN MARCH 2019.

CAR ENGINE SHUTS OFF/STOPS RUNNING, WITHOUT WARNING, WHILE DRIVING. HAS HAPPENED 3 TIMES IN THE PAST 12 MONTHS. AT SLOWER SPEED, IN TOWN, COMING TO A STOP OR SLOWING FOR A TURN. CAR STARTS BACK UP RIGHT AWAY, AND WON'T STOP AGAIN FOR A LONG TIME. ALSO CAN'T MAKE IT STOP ON PURPOSE.

VEHICLE SPEED CONTROLJun 2019

CAR BEGAN TO ACCELERATE AFTER STARTING AND PUT INTO GEAR. I DIDN'T TOUCH THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL, NOR WAS THE FLOOR MAT TOUCHING THE PEDAL. I HAD TO PUT THE CAR IN NEUTRAL AND SHUT IT OFF. AFTER SHUTTING OFF AND RESTARTING, IT DID THIS 3 MORE TIMES. IT ACCELERATED WHILE STILL IN PARK, ALMOST TO 3000 RPM BEFORE I SHUT IT OFF. FOURTH TIME, IT RESTARTED WITHOUT ANY PROBLEMS.

I WAS DRIVING ON A HIGHWAY WHEN MY VEHICLE STALLED NEARLY CAUSING A MAJOR ACCIDENT. THERE WAS NO WARNING, ENGINE LIGHT OR ISSUES WITH THE CAR STARTING OR DRIVING. NO ISSUES WITH IDLING OR ANYTHING TO SUGGEST I NEEDED SERVICE. THE DEALER IS SAYING IT IS EXCESS CARBON ON THE THROTTLE BODY. IT APPEARS HYUNDAI HAS HAD ISSUES WITH THIS THAT HAVE NOT BEEN ADDRESSED.

VEHICLE SPEED CONTROLJan 2019

UNINTENDED ACCELERATION OF VEHICLE AFTER REMOVING FOOT FROM GAS PEDAL. AFTER STARTING MY CAR AND BACKING UP, I PUT MY VEHICLE INTO DRIVE. BEFORE I PUT MY FOOT ON THE GAS PEDAL, THE CAR BEGAN TO ACCELERATE BY ITSELF WITHOUT THE SPEED REGISTERING ON THE SPEEDOMETER OR THE RPM'S REGISTERING ON THE TACHOMETER. NO WARNING LIGHTS APPEARED AND CONTINUED TO DO THIS EVEN AFTER COMING TO A COMPLETE STOP. THE CURRENT MILEAGE IS 41000 MILES, AND HAS HAD REGULAR MAINTENANCE PERFORMED. I AM AN ASE CERTIFIED TECHNICIAN AND COULD FIND NO REASON FOR THIS TO OCCUR.

TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2014 HYUNDAI GENESIS. WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 45 MPH, THE ENGINE STALLED WITHOUT WARNING. THE VEHICLE WAS PULLED OVER TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD AND RESTARTED, BUT THE FAILURE RECURRED. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO PEACOCK HYUNDAI HILTON HEAD IN HARDEEVILLE, SOUTH CAROLINA 29927 (843-208-1234) WHERE IT WAS DIAGNOSED THAT THE CHARCOAL FILTER WAS OVERLOADED AND SHUT DOWN THE ENGINE. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE AND RECOMMENDED THAT THE CHARCOAL FILTER BE REPLACED. THE FILTER WAS REPLACED, BUT THE CONTACT DID NOT FEEL THAT THE VEHICLE WAS SAFE TO DRIVE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 51,000.

TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2014 HYUNDAI GENESIS. WHILE DRIVING 20 MPH, THE VEHICLE STALLED WITHOUT WARNING AND CRASHED INTO THE CURB. THE AIR BAGS DID NOT DEPLOY. THERE WERE NO INJURIES AND A POLICE REPORT WAS NOT FILED. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO A LOCAL DEALER (ATLANTIC HYUNDAI, 193 SUNRISE HIGHWAY, WEST ISLIP, NY 11705). THE VEHICLE WAS NOT DIAGNOSED OR REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT NOTIFIED. THE VIN WAS UNKNOWN. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 62,000.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,EXTERIOR LIGHTINGDec 2017

HEADLIGHTS FLASH OFF OR STAY OFF WHEN USING THE TURN SIGNALS. AT NIGHT WHEN CHANGING LANES OR TURNING CORNERS THE HEADLIGHTS SOMETIMES GO OFF FOR A MOMENT WHEN ENGAGING THE LEFT OR RIGHT TURN SIGNAL LEVER. ALSO THE HEADLIGHTS SOMETIMES TURN OFF AND STAY OFF WHEN COMPLETING A TURN WHEN THE TURN SIGNAL AUTOMATICALLY TURNS OFF. ONE NEEDS TO JOG THE TURN SIGNAL LEVER TO GET THE HEADLIGHTS BACK ON. THIS CAN BE RECREATED WHEN PARKED SIMPLY BY OPERATING THE TURN SIGNALS. THIS IS AN INTERMITTENT PROBLEM WHETHER MOVING OR PARKED. THIS PROBLEM SEEMS TO BE INDEPENDENT OF WEATHER, SPEED OR ROAD CONDITIONS. I HAVE SEEN MANY COMPLAINTS AND EXAMPLES OF THIS CONDITION ON YOU TUBE.

EXTERIOR LIGHTINGOct 2017

HEADLIGHT FLICKER OFF WHEN USING THE TURN SIGNAL, STAYS OFF FOR 1-2 SECONDS. LIGHT SWITCH IS IN THE ON POSITION. THIS HAPPENED WITH ME DRIVING AT NIGHT AND MAKING A LEFT TURN, VERY SCARY !!! WAS DRIVING IN A CITY, BUT IT HAS HAPPEN DRIVING OUT IN THE COUNTRY. I THINK THE PROBLEM IS A FAULT IN THE LIGHT SWITCH TURN SIGNAL ASSEMBLY.

These pages show model-year patterns across 8 years. Enter a VIN to verify the exact vehicle's accident history, title brands, odometer records, and open recall status before purchase.

The basics

How to read this data

Complaints, recalls, investigations β€” here’s what each number actually tells you about a used Hyundai Genesis, in plain English.

01

What is an NHTSA Complaint?

An NHTSA safety complaint is a report filed directly by a vehicle owner or driver describing a safety-related issue. Anyone can submit a complaint at NHTSA.gov. The number of complaints is a signal of how common a problem is β€” but complaints per model-year matter more than raw totals, since popular vehicles naturally receive more reports. The Hyundai Genesis has 1,421 complaints on record across 8 model years.

02

What is a Safety Recall?

A safety recall is a mandatory campaign issued by NHTSA when a vehicle component poses an unreasonable risk to safety or does not comply with federal motor vehicle safety standards. Unlike complaints (which are owner-reported), recalls are formally investigated and confirmed by regulators. Manufacturers must fix recalled vehicles free of charge. The Hyundai Genesis has 20 recall campaigns in the NHTSA database.

03

What Are Crash Complaints?

Crash complaints are NHTSA filings where the owner indicates a crash occurred as part of the incident. 84 of the Hyundai Genesis's 1,421 complaints involved a crash. This metric is particularly important because it indicates how often defects resulted in actual collisions β€” a key safety signal beyond general reliability.

04

How Is the Reliability Verdict Calculated?

The reliability verdict (Poor) is generated by analyzing the vehicle's total complaints, recall history, crash complaint ratio, fire complaint ratio, and top component failures relative to class averages. This verdict gives buyers a quick interpretation before they review year-level details and VIN-level history. It should be treated as one decision input, not a substitute for a VIN-specific report.

05

Why Do Newer Years Have Fewer Complaints?

Newer model years appear to have fewer complaints because there has been less time for owners to file them. Complaints accumulate over years of ownership. A 2020 model year vehicle will typically show fewer complaints than a 2015 model year even if it is less reliable β€” simply because fewer owners have had time to report issues. Focus on complaints per year of market presence when comparing across model years.

06

Fleet Data vs. Individual VIN

Everything on this page reflects aggregated data across all Hyundai Genesis vehicles on the road β€” not any specific car. Two Hyundai Genesis vehicles of the same year can have very different histories: one may have been in three accidents and have an open recall; another may be clean. A VIN check gives you the individual car's history: accidents, title brands, odometer records, service history, and real-time recall status.

07

What Are NHTSA Investigations?

When NHTSA receives a pattern of related safety complaints, it opens a formal investigation. A Preliminary Evaluation (PE) is the first stage β€” NHTSA determines if a safety defect may exist. If evidence is strong, it escalates to an Engineering Analysis (EA), which can result in a mandatory recall. The Hyundai Genesis has 0 investigations on record (0 active). Investigations listed above may have already led to the recalls shown on this page.
