Crash test ratings
NHTSA NCAP crash test ratings
New Car Assessment ProgramNCAP crash tests measure how well a vehicle protects occupants in controlled frontal crash, side crash, and rollover scenarios. Stars are awarded per category (5 = safest). These laboratory results are independent of owner complaints and are performed by NHTSA engineers on new production vehicles.
NCAP crash test ratings for this model are not yet loaded or this vehicle was not tested in the years analyzed. NHTSA tests a subset of new vehicles each year. Check nhtsa.gov/ratings directly for the latest results.

GM says my Vin was not part of the recalls, The Vin wasn't the problem,It was the Transmission!!! letter I sent to GM : Transmission Failure on 2019 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 LT Dear General Motors Customer Assistance, I am writing to formally express my concern regarding the complete failure of the 8L90 transmission in my 2019 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 LT. I have been a loyal Chevrolet customer and have always trusted GM vehicles for their reliability and performance. However, the recent catastrophic failure of my transmission—resulting in both internal and external damage—has left me extremely disappointed and financially burdened. This vehicle, equipped with the 8-speed 8L90 transmission, began exhibiting harsh shifting, delayed acceleration, and shuddering well before the failure. Despite regular maintenance and proper care, the transmission ultimately failed and "blew up" both internally and externally, rendering the vehicle undrivable and in need of complete transmission replacement. Upon further research, I discovered that numerous owners of 2015–2019 GM vehicles with the 8L90 transmission have reported similar issues, and multiple class-action lawsuits have been filed citing systemic defects in this transmission design. Though no recall has been officially issued, the volume of complaints and the existence of internal Technical Service Bulletins (such as TSB 16-NA-019) suggest GM is aware of the ongoing problems associated with this transmission. Given these circumstances, I am requesting that General Motors stand behind its product and assist with the full cost of replacing the failed transmission. I am prepared to provide documentation including service records, a technician’s report on the failure, and photos of the damage if needed. Please let me know how GM intends to proceed with this request. I would appreciate a prompt and fair resolution to this matter. Sincerely, [XXX] VIN # [XXX] Current Mileage: 114850 INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

GM refuses to cover catalytic converter recall 20V-005 despite matching VIN/build criteria. Failure occurred at 88k, but dealer refused service at the time. I'm now driving it at 108k. Private garage confirmed it's critically plugged.
The contact owns a 2019 Chevrolet Silverado 1500. The contact stated while driving at various speeds, the vehicle jerked and vibrated while shifting into gear. The check engine warning light was illuminated. The local dealer was not contacted. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and informed the contact that the VIN was not included in an Extended Warranty coverage related to the failure. The failure mileage was 200.
On 7/2/25, I was driving my 2019 Chevy Silverado on the highway and felt like there was a slight loss of power. I then noticed the Service parking brake, service ESC and the check engine light came on. I was going up a hill and had to move over to the far right lane and drive very slowly on the highway because of the engine problem. I was able to get off the highway without incident. I immediately took the truck to the Chevrolet dealer where I purchased it since it was very close. The dealership later inspected the truck and found the lifters had seized and caused damage to the camshaft. They said I would need a new engine at a cost of around $15,000. There were no warning signs or problems to indicate I was going to have an engine failure. The instrument warning lights came on when the engine problem occurred.
The vehicle was being driven to work when the engine lost power and several warning lights started cycling. The vehicle started shaking badly. The truck had 62,735 miles and was regularly serviced. We took it to Christian Brothers Automotive in Lubbock, TX. where they were able to find that that lifters failed causing $7,000.00 in damage. The shop that made the repairs said it is a common and known issue.

Key keeps getting stuck when I put it in park and turn off truck! It’s off and on park but it won’t release the key! This happens every day!
The contact owns a 2019 Chevrolet Silverado 1500. The contact stated that while idling, the vehicle made an abnormal ticking sound, and several unknown warning lights were illuminated. The contact was able to pull to the shoulder of the roadway. The vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic to be diagnosed, but no diagnostic trouble codes were retrieved, and the cause of the failure could not be determined. The mechanic advised the contact to tow the vehicle to a dealer. The vehicle was then towed to a dealer, where the vehicle was diagnosed with defective engine lifters and a defective camshaft. The contact related the failure to NHTSA Action Number: PE25001(Engine and Engine Cooling). The manufacturer was notified of the failure and informed the contact that the VIN was not included in a recall, and a case was filed. The manufacturer agreed to partially cover the cost of the repair. The vehicle was repaired. The manufacturer also referred the contact to the NHTSA Hotline to file a vehicle safety complaint. The failure mileage was approximately 63,000.
I have a 2019 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 LT and I am having issues with the transmission bucking, hesitating, slipping. I am also having issues with the variable timing system. The variable timing system started acting up last year and when I took it to the dealer they replaced it and I was charged over $400 for it to be repaired. It happened again the beginning of this year and I took it back to the dealer. They told me the oil was dirty and suggested an oil change to fix the issue. I had the oil change done and now I am having the same problem again and have already had the oil changed. I need help since I am paying for a vehicle that is sitting in my driveway not being able to be used. There are 6 codes that have popped up including the variable timing system, cylinder 4 misfire, brake system, and I'm not exactly sure what the other ones are.

What component or system failed or malfunctioned, and is it available for inspection upon request? The ECU/Power train failed/ Yes the vehicle is available for inspection. The vehicle's check engine light & traction light came on & the dash displayed multiple warning messages including reduced engine power & service ECS. How was your safety or the safety of others put at risk? I was traveling on the Interstate at 65 MPH in traffic in the far left passing lane. Engine power was reduced & I had to safely navigate the vehicle through traffic & multiple lanes to safely get the vehicle to the shoulder of the interstate & avoid causing any accidents. Has the problem been reproduced or confirmed by a dealer or independent service center? Yes, the problem was confirmed by my local Chevrolet dealer. Has the vehicle or component been inspected by the manufacturer, police, insurance representatives or others? It was inspected by my local Chevrolet dealer. Were there any warning lamps, messages or other symptoms of the problem prior to the failure, and when did they first appear? No there was not. The issue was attributed to a known manufacturing flaw on my vehicle. The wiring harness to the ECU was chaffed caused by rubbing on the frame, ECU bracket and/or A arm which in turn caused the issue. GM published a repair bulletin on this issue as well as the NHTSA.

abrupt shifts when approaching a red light or stop and sometimes rough shifting.
I am experiencing the exact details of N192272400 Rear Wheels Lock At Low Speed but for some reason my VIN isn’t associated with the recall! This is highly dangerous. It could cause a serious accident seen that I live on a main road. I don’t know where the vehicle locks up the rear brakes if I go over 5 miles an hour at random times. I believe 100% that it is exactly what is described in that recall which is a defective TCM that has a short circuit. Another issue that I have with his truck out of nowhere is a short circuit in my rear defroster that was sparking and smoking when I used it.

TSB PIP5776. 87000 miles failed. dealer quote ($9,000) to repair lifter and bent camshaft. Gm said they aren't helping and my next step is get a attorney. Mention 10% “goodwill” offer and lifter collapse + bent cam
The transmission does not shift smoothly. It actually will lurch forward after a stop at a sign or traffic light. It hesitates upon acceleration. I find it unerving and possibly dangerous. It was fixed by the dealer on October 22, 2024 and was good for 6 months but has started to do the same thing again.

The basics
How to read this data
Complaints, recalls, investigations — here’s what each number actually tells you about a used Chevrolet Silverado LD, in plain English.
What is an NHTSA Complaint?
An NHTSA safety complaint is a report filed directly by a vehicle owner or driver describing a safety-related issue. Anyone can submit a complaint at NHTSA.gov. The number of complaints is a signal of how common a problem is — but complaints per model-year matter more than raw totals, since popular vehicles naturally receive more reports. The Chevrolet Silverado LD has 822 complaints on record across 1 model years.
What is a Safety Recall?
A safety recall is a mandatory campaign issued by NHTSA when a vehicle component poses an unreasonable risk to safety or does not comply with federal motor vehicle safety standards. Unlike complaints (which are owner-reported), recalls are formally investigated and confirmed by regulators. Manufacturers must fix recalled vehicles free of charge. The Chevrolet Silverado LD has 0 recall campaigns in the NHTSA database.
What Are Crash Complaints?
Crash complaints are NHTSA filings where the owner indicates a crash occurred as part of the incident. 24 of the Chevrolet Silverado LD's 822 complaints involved a crash. This metric is particularly important because it indicates how often defects resulted in actual collisions — a key safety signal beyond general reliability.
How Is the Reliability Verdict Calculated?
The reliability verdict (Poor) is generated by analyzing the vehicle's total complaints, recall history, crash complaint ratio, fire complaint ratio, and top component failures relative to class averages. This verdict gives buyers a quick interpretation before they review year-level details and VIN-level history. It should be treated as one decision input, not a substitute for a VIN-specific report.
Why Do Newer Years Have Fewer Complaints?
Newer model years appear to have fewer complaints because there has been less time for owners to file them. Complaints accumulate over years of ownership. A 2020 model year vehicle will typically show fewer complaints than a 2015 model year even if it is less reliable — simply because fewer owners have had time to report issues. Focus on complaints per year of market presence when comparing across model years.
Fleet Data vs. Individual VIN
Everything on this page reflects aggregated data across all Chevrolet Silverado LD vehicles on the road — not any specific car. Two Chevrolet Silverado LD vehicles of the same year can have very different histories: one may have been in three accidents and have an open recall; another may be clean. A VIN check gives you the individual car's history: accidents, title brands, odometer records, service history, and real-time recall status.
What Are NHTSA Investigations?
When NHTSA receives a pattern of related safety complaints, it opens a formal investigation. A Preliminary Evaluation (PE) is the first stage — NHTSA determines if a safety defect may exist. If evidence is strong, it escalates to an Engineering Analysis (EA), which can result in a mandatory recall. The Chevrolet Silverado LD has 0 investigations on record (0 active). Investigations listed above may have already led to the recalls shown on this page.
