Crash test ratings
NHTSA NCAP crash test ratings
New Car Assessment ProgramNCAP crash tests measure how well a vehicle protects occupants in controlled frontal crash, side crash, and rollover scenarios. Stars are awarded per category (5 = safest). These laboratory results are independent of owner complaints and are performed by NHTSA engineers on new production vehicles.
NCAP crash test ratings for this model are not yet loaded or this vehicle was not tested in the years analyzed. NHTSA tests a subset of new vehicles each year. Check nhtsa.gov/ratings directly for the latest results.

BIG PROBLEM WITH LIGHT SWITCH, THE ONE FROM FACTORY MELTED, AT THE TIME I DID NOT KNOW ABOUT THE RECALL. THE REPLACEMENT MELTED TO. AT THAT TIME I DID FOUND OUT ABOUT THE RECALL FOR THIS CARS REGARDING THAT PROBLEM, THE DEALER DID NOT HELP WHIT THE PROBLEM DESPITE I TOOK DOCUMENTATION ABOUT THE PROBLEM AND WHAT THE FACTORY WAS DOING ABOUT IT. PLEASE CAN YOU HELP ME SO THE DEALERSHIP AT LEAS CHANGE THE LIGHT SWITCH. AT THE MOMENT I AM NOT USING THE SWITCH , I CAME UP WITH AN ALTERNATIVE. THANK YOU.
CONSTANT CLUNKING IN STEERING WHENEVER TURNING...... SUPPOSE TO BE GM CERTIFIED CAR WHICH ABSOLUTELY MEANS NOTHING.. WITHIN A YEAR OF DEALERSHIP DECLARING THIS TO BE GM CERTIFIED, EVERYTHING SEEMED TO FALL APART. I HAD TO REPLACE THE INTERMEDIATE STEERING SHAFT, PART WAS $120 AND LABOR WAS $70. ALSO VALVE IN GAS TANK BAD, CHECK ENGINE LIGHT WHICH ALSO COST MONEY, MONEY, MONEY. THANKS GM, I WILL BE SURE TO BUY ANOTHER IMPALA OR ANY OTHER GM PRODUCT. TIME TO GO TOYOTA OR HYUANDI. *TR
SINCE LAST YEAR I HAVE HAD PROBLEMS WITH MY CAR WHEN IT IS ON THE ROAD SPECIFICALLY GOING UP A HILL IT WOULD LOSE POWER AND IT SLOWS DOWN AND THEN IT TURNS OFF WHILE RUNNING. WHICH IS VERY DANGEROUS BECAUSE SOMETIMES THE CAR BEHIND ME COME VERY CLOSE TO CRASHING AGAINST ME. WE TOOK THE CAR TO A GM DEALER WHERE WE BOUGHT IT THEY COULD NOT GIVE US AN ANSWER WE HAVE TAKEN THE CAR TO 6 REPAIR SHOPS AND NO ONE KNOWS WHAT IS WRONG WITH THE VEHICLE WE HAVE CHANGE THE TPS SENSOR, THE SPARK PLUGS, MAP SENSOR, NEW BATTERY, WE HAVE CLEANED THE FUEL INJECTORS SEVERAL TIMES,WE CHANGE THE TRANSMISSION FLUIDS, WE CHANGE THE PUMP GAS COMPLETELY, WE HAVE CHANGED THE IGNITION COIL.WE HAVE CHANGED THE TIMING BELT TWICE SINCE WE HAVE THE CAR. AND THE CAR IS RUNNING WORSE NOW BECAUSE IT STOPS NOT ONLY IN A HILL BUT ON A FLAT ROAD TOO. *JS
The contact owns a 2005 Chevrolet Optra. The contact received notification of NHTSA Campaign Number: 14V261000 (Exterior Lightning). The contact stated that while driving at an undisclosed speed, the headlights inadvertently dimmed then went back to bright. The dealer was made aware of the failure but informed the contact that parts were not available. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure but informed the contact that parts were not available. The failure mileage was approximately 60,000.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2005 CHEVROLET OPTRA. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE HEAD LIGHTS FAILED. THE CONTACT STATED THAT HE WOULD TURN THE LIGHTS ON AND BURNING FUMES WOULD EMIT INTO THE VEHICLE. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER WHO DIAGNOSE THAT THE WIRING HARNESS NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED UNDER A RECALL NHTSA CAMPAIGN ID NUMBER: 07V482000 COMPONENT: EXTERIOR LIGHTING:HEADLIGHTS BUT THE FAILURE RECURRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE WHO DID NOT OFFER ANY ASSISTANCE SINCE THE VEHICLE WAS NO LONGER UNDER WARRANTY. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 30,592.
THE SERVICE AIR BAG LIGHT ON WITH CODE B2502, B1104, B2500. THEY CALL THE REPLACED PART AS "DISPLAY/CLOCK" ASSEMBLY WHICH MAKES IT SOUND LIKE A NON-SAFETY RELATED ISSUE BUT IT IS ACTUALLY SOMETHING WRONG WITH THE AIRBAG. IT HAPPENED TWICE ON MY CAR. THE FIRST TIME IT IS WAS STILL IN WARRANTY, MILEAGE SHOULD BE AROUND 30K-40K KM. THIS TIME THE MILEAGE IS 125506KM. WHAT MAKES ME NERVOUS IS THAT THE PASSENGER AIRBAG LIGHT IN THE "DISPLAY/CLOCK" UNIT FLASHES IRREGULARLY FOR ABOUT 10-30 SECONDS WHEN STARTING THE CAR. I SAID IRREGULAR FLASHES, I MEANT THE KIND THAT ARE CAUSED BY UNSECURED CONNECTION OF WIRE. *TR

CHEVROLET OPTRA 5 2005. HEADLAMP LOW BEAMS AND DAY TIME RUNNING LAMPS WORK SPORADICALLY. IT WAS A RECALL FOR THIS PROBLEM AND I WAS NEVER NOTIFIED FROM GM DEALER. I ALREADY SPENT A LOT OF MONEY TRYING TO FIX IT (PROBLEM IS STILL ON IT) AND JUST NOW I KNEW ABOUT THE RECALL. THIS IS A SAFETY ISSUE SPECIAL DURING THE WINTER TIME. LAST YEAR I BOUGHT THIS CAR FROM MY OWN LEASE AND DEALER NEVER MENTIONED THE PROBLEM. SO I SHOULD GO TO THE SERVICE AND PAY TO FIX IT. *TR
WHILE I WAS DRIVING ON HIGHWAY AT 11PM, ALL LIGHTS SUDDENLY WENT OFF. THE SAME ISSUE HAPPENED IN 2006(?) AND WAS FIXED. IN 2008(?), THERE WAS A RECALL FROM GM ABOUT THE ISSUE AND I DID BRING MY CAR TO DEALER FOR THE RECALL, ALTHOUGH I DON'T KNOW WHAT THEY DID. NOW IT IS HAPPENING AGAIN. I THINK EITHER THEY DIDN'T DO ANYTHING IN THE RECALL FOR ME OR THE FIX IN THE RECALL DOESN'T RESOLVE THE ISSUE. *TR
I HAVE SUFFERED AN ACCIDENT IN WHICH I WAS SEVERELY INJURED BY THE SEAT BELT. I WAS IN THE BACK, RIGHT SIDE WITH MY SEAT BELT ON. BECAUSE OF IT I HAD A RUPTURED SPLEEN, RUPTURED SIGMOID, EXPLOSION OF APPENDIX AND RUPTURED CEC. NOT TO MENTION THE HORRIBLE HEMATOMAS IN AND OUTSIDE MY ABDOMEN. I NEEDED EMERGENCY SURGERY AND 2 WEEKS OF HOSPITALIZATION. THE CAR IN WHICH THIS HAPPENED IS A CHEVROLET LACETTI AND THE PLACE WHERE IT HAPPENED IS BUCHAREST, ROMANIA. I WOULD LIKE TO FILE A COMPLAINT AGAINST THIS COMPANY BECAUSE THIS KIND OF INJURY SHOULDN'T HAPPEN BECAUSE OF A SEAT BELT. I BELIEVE THAT THE DESIGN OF IT WAS INCORRECT AND THEY HAVE TO DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT. *JB

The basics
How to read this data
Complaints, recalls, investigations — here’s what each number actually tells you about a used Chevrolet Optra, in plain English.
What is an NHTSA Complaint?
An NHTSA safety complaint is a report filed directly by a vehicle owner or driver describing a safety-related issue. Anyone can submit a complaint at NHTSA.gov. The number of complaints is a signal of how common a problem is — but complaints per model-year matter more than raw totals, since popular vehicles naturally receive more reports. The Chevrolet Optra has 10 complaints on record across 6 model years.
What is a Safety Recall?
A safety recall is a mandatory campaign issued by NHTSA when a vehicle component poses an unreasonable risk to safety or does not comply with federal motor vehicle safety standards. Unlike complaints (which are owner-reported), recalls are formally investigated and confirmed by regulators. Manufacturers must fix recalled vehicles free of charge. The Chevrolet Optra has 4 recall campaigns in the NHTSA database.
What Are Crash Complaints?
Crash complaints are NHTSA filings where the owner indicates a crash occurred as part of the incident. 1 of the Chevrolet Optra's 10 complaints involved a crash. This metric is particularly important because it indicates how often defects resulted in actual collisions — a key safety signal beyond general reliability.
How Is the Reliability Verdict Calculated?
The reliability verdict (Good) is generated by analyzing the vehicle's total complaints, recall history, crash complaint ratio, fire complaint ratio, and top component failures relative to class averages. This verdict gives buyers a quick interpretation before they review year-level details and VIN-level history. It should be treated as one decision input, not a substitute for a VIN-specific report.
Why Do Newer Years Have Fewer Complaints?
Newer model years appear to have fewer complaints because there has been less time for owners to file them. Complaints accumulate over years of ownership. A 2020 model year vehicle will typically show fewer complaints than a 2015 model year even if it is less reliable — simply because fewer owners have had time to report issues. Focus on complaints per year of market presence when comparing across model years.
Fleet Data vs. Individual VIN
Everything on this page reflects aggregated data across all Chevrolet Optra vehicles on the road — not any specific car. Two Chevrolet Optra vehicles of the same year can have very different histories: one may have been in three accidents and have an open recall; another may be clean. A VIN check gives you the individual car's history: accidents, title brands, odometer records, service history, and real-time recall status.
What Are NHTSA Investigations?
When NHTSA receives a pattern of related safety complaints, it opens a formal investigation. A Preliminary Evaluation (PE) is the first stage — NHTSA determines if a safety defect may exist. If evidence is strong, it escalates to an Engineering Analysis (EA), which can result in a mandatory recall. The Chevrolet Optra has 0 investigations on record (0 active). Investigations listed above may have already led to the recalls shown on this page.
