Crash test ratings

NHTSA NCAP crash test ratings

New Car Assessment Program

NCAP crash tests measure how well a vehicle protects occupants in controlled frontal crash, side crash, and rollover scenarios. Stars are awarded per category (5 = safest). These laboratory results are independent of owner complaints and are performed by NHTSA engineers on new production vehicles.

NCAP crash test ratings for this model are not yet loaded or this vehicle was not tested in the years analyzed. NHTSA tests a subset of new vehicles each year. Check nhtsa.gov/ratings directly for the latest results.

What the complaint data suggests

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,SERVICE BRAKESJul 2025

The car always turns on the slippery road warning light when I drive over 60 miles per hour and the wheels lock up. Sometimes, the ABS warning light also comes on, along with error messages saying 'Service Traction Control' and 'Service StabiliTrak'.

STEERING,WHEELSMay 2025

The contact owns a 2023 Chevrolet Express. The contact stated that while pulling into the driveway, the front driver's side wheel turned sideways. Upon inspecting the vehicle, the contact noticed that the outer tie rod had failed, and the tie rod nut was bent. There were no warning lights illuminated. The contact repaired the vehicle himself. The local dealer was not contacted. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired by the dealer. The manufacturer was contacted, but no assistance was provided. The failure mileage was approximately 29,047.

VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,ENGINE,FUEL SYSTEM, DIESELJan 2026

The contact owns a 2024 Chevrolet Express. The contact stated that while attempting to accelerate, the vehicle hesitated, jerked, and stopped unexpectedly. There were no warning lights illuminated. The vehicle was serviced by an independent mechanic who determined the failure was associated with DTC: P129F-00 (Fuel pump drive control module). The part was replaced. The contact stated that the vehicle was in a fleet of vehicles for the school district. The local dealer was contacted, but the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was contacted, and the contact was referred to the NHTSA Hotline for assistance. The failure mileage was approximately 56,837.

Crash 1 InjuryAIR BAGSAug 2026

The OTA had the interstate lanes bottle necked down. Traffic was trying to merge. The van had already slowed down and moved into the thru lane closest to the median. The van was pushed off the road by a semi into the contrete barrier. The semi clipped the bumper on the front passenger's side. It was also hit on the driver's side rear bumper. All of this caused the van to hit the wall on the front driver's corner. The airbags did not deploy! The driver was slammed into the steering wheel hitting his face against it. He suffered several facial fractures which required surgical repair. He now has plates holding the orbital socket, cheek bone, and jaw. The fracture in front of the ear was not plated. The highway patrol was called to the scene. The van will soon be released to the insurance company for claims inspection. We believe it to be totaled

SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULICMay 2026

The contact owns a 2019 Chevrolet Express NAV. The motorhome is a 2020 Coachman Freelander. The contact stated that while driving at an undisclosed speed, during the night and in the rain, the vehicle failed to accelerate as intended while depressing the accelerator pedal and jerked violently. The contact jolted violently and was almost thrown off the driver's seat. The contact pulled to the side of the road. Once the vehicle was on the side of the road, the contact noticed white smoke or steam emitting from the rear of the vehicle. The contact was able to continue driving. The vehicle was towed to an independent RV mechanic who diagnosed that the entire front and rear end were damaged: brake springs, brake rotors, brake lines, and brake pads. The vehicle was repaired. The contact received notification of NHTSA Campaign Number: 24V702000 (SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC). The contact notified the manufacturer about the loss, and the manufacturer refused to complete the recall since the vehicle was never taken to a dealer. The contact stated that none of the dealers accepted the vehicle since no lifts were available that could hold that much weight. The contact applied for reimbursement, and the manufacturer declined. The failure mileage was approximately 6,000.

POWER TRAINSep 2025

I am reporting a recurring transmission defect in my 2019 Chevy Express Cargo Van. Shortly after purchase, I noticed clunking sounds when slowing down or coming to a stop. The issue progressed into rough shifting and eventual check engine lights with codes P0722 and P0700. The dealership stated the valve body had already been replaced in 2020 and suspects the torque converter is the root cause, which is causing repeated valve body failures. These transmission failures create unsafe driving conditions, including loss of smooth deceleration and unpredictable shifting behavior. I believe this is a design flaw affecting the Hydra-Matic transmission system and may qualify as a safety risk. There are multiple class action lawsuits currently pending regarding GM’s 8-speed transmissions (Speerly v. GM; Battle v. GM), and many consumers are reporting similar symptoms.

The contact received notification of NHTSA Campaign Number: 24V702000 (Service Brake, Hydraulic); however, the part to do the recall repair was not yet available. The local dealer was contacted. The contact stated that the manufacturer had exceeded a reasonable amount of time for the recall repair. The manufacturer was made aware of the issue. The contact had not experienced a failure. Parts distribution disconnect.

The contact owns a 2019 Chevrolet Express 2500. The contact stated that while her husband was driving, the vehicle failed to accelerate after a stop. The vehicle failed to shift into reverse but continued to start. There were no warning lights illuminated. The vehicle was towed to the local dealer but was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was contacted, but no assistance was provided. The failure mileage was approximately 140,000.

POWER TRAINJul 2023

The contact owns a 2019 Chevrolet Express. The contact stated that while the vehicle was stopped with the transmission in reverse(R), the vehicle moved forward. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired by an independent mechanic or dealer. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and informed the contact that there was no recall on the VIN. The failure mileage was approximately 4,783.

These pages show model-year patterns across 10 years. Enter a VIN to verify the exact vehicle's accident history, title brands, odometer records, and open recall status before purchase.

The basics

How to read this data

Complaints, recalls, investigations — here’s what each number actually tells you about a used Chevrolet Express, in plain English.

01

What is an NHTSA Complaint?

An NHTSA safety complaint is a report filed directly by a vehicle owner or driver describing a safety-related issue. Anyone can submit a complaint at NHTSA.gov. The number of complaints is a signal of how common a problem is — but complaints per model-year matter more than raw totals, since popular vehicles naturally receive more reports. The Chevrolet Express has 445 complaints on record across 10 model years.

02

What is a Safety Recall?

A safety recall is a mandatory campaign issued by NHTSA when a vehicle component poses an unreasonable risk to safety or does not comply with federal motor vehicle safety standards. Unlike complaints (which are owner-reported), recalls are formally investigated and confirmed by regulators. Manufacturers must fix recalled vehicles free of charge. The Chevrolet Express has 28 recall campaigns in the NHTSA database.

03

What Are Crash Complaints?

Crash complaints are NHTSA filings where the owner indicates a crash occurred as part of the incident. 27 of the Chevrolet Express's 445 complaints involved a crash. This metric is particularly important because it indicates how often defects resulted in actual collisions — a key safety signal beyond general reliability.

04

How Is the Reliability Verdict Calculated?

The reliability verdict (Poor) is generated by analyzing the vehicle's total complaints, recall history, crash complaint ratio, fire complaint ratio, and top component failures relative to class averages. This verdict gives buyers a quick interpretation before they review year-level details and VIN-level history. It should be treated as one decision input, not a substitute for a VIN-specific report.

05

Why Do Newer Years Have Fewer Complaints?

Newer model years appear to have fewer complaints because there has been less time for owners to file them. Complaints accumulate over years of ownership. A 2020 model year vehicle will typically show fewer complaints than a 2015 model year even if it is less reliable — simply because fewer owners have had time to report issues. Focus on complaints per year of market presence when comparing across model years.

06

Fleet Data vs. Individual VIN

Everything on this page reflects aggregated data across all Chevrolet Express vehicles on the road — not any specific car. Two Chevrolet Express vehicles of the same year can have very different histories: one may have been in three accidents and have an open recall; another may be clean. A VIN check gives you the individual car's history: accidents, title brands, odometer records, service history, and real-time recall status.

07

What Are NHTSA Investigations?

When NHTSA receives a pattern of related safety complaints, it opens a formal investigation. A Preliminary Evaluation (PE) is the first stage — NHTSA determines if a safety defect may exist. If evidence is strong, it escalates to an Engineering Analysis (EA), which can result in a mandatory recall. The Chevrolet Express has 0 investigations on record (0 active). Investigations listed above may have already led to the recalls shown on this page.
