The picture
Is the Volkswagen Eurovan or Toyota Camry more reliable?
A plain-English read on what the NHTSA record says about living with each vehicle.
Volkswagen Eurovan
The Volkswagen Eurovan is a niche van often used as a camper or family hauler, and its 108 complaints over five years suggest a moderate rate of issues. Owners frequently report engine cooling failures, electrical shorts, and seat heater fires, which can be costly and dangerous. With only 2 recalls, many problems may not be covered, so a thorough inspection is critical.
Toyota Camry
The Toyota Camry is a mainstream sedan with a strong reputation, but 2,056 complaints over ten years indicate that even popular cars have problems. Power train and engine complaints are common, along with brake and electrical issues. With 31 recalls, many defects are addressed, but the high complaint volume means buyers should check for open recalls and test drive carefully.

Owners report banging noises, overheating, and cooling fans coming apart, leading to warning lights and potential engine damage. This can strand a driver and require expensive repairs.
Complaints include wiring harness insulation failure causing sparks and power window/lock malfunctions, as well as seat heater fires. These pose fire risks and can be costly to fix.
Seat heaters have caught fire, burning seat covers and clothing, and in one case scalding a passenger. This is a serious safety concern that may not be recalled.
Transmission problems include sputtering, engine light, and premature failure requiring replacement. Repairs can exceed $5,000, making it a major financial risk.

- Inspect the driver's door wiring harness for exposed or frayed wires, and test all power windows, locks, and seat heaters for proper function.
- Test the ignition key removal in Park and listen for ABS noises when braking; also check for delayed throttle response.
- Verify that the electronic parking brake engages and disengages properly, and check for any warning lights related to stability control or power steering.
Before you buy
- Obtain a vehicle history report and check for open recalls using the VIN on NHTSA's website.
- Have a trusted mechanic inspect the engine cooling system, transmission, and electrical components, especially for the Eurovan.
- For the Camry, test drive at various speeds to check for hesitation, transmission shudder, and brake noises.
- Ask the seller for maintenance records, particularly for transmission fluid changes and brake repairs.
- Inspect seat heaters and wiring for any signs of burning or damage, especially in the Eurovan.
