The picture

Is the Rolls Royce DAWN or Toyota Camry more reliable?

A plain-English read on what the NHTSA record says about living with each vehicle.

Rolls Royce DAWN

The Rolls Royce DAWN is a low-volume luxury car, so it has very few owner complaints on file—zero over six years. That doesn't mean it's trouble-free; it means problems are less likely to be reported to NHTSA. The only recall subjects are air bags, so a buyer should still check for open recalls.

Toyota Camry

The Toyota Camry is a high-volume family sedan with many owner complaints—about 214 per year over ten years. The most common areas are power train, engine, brakes, and electrical system. Some complaints describe serious issues like sudden acceleration, transmission grinding, and brake failure.

What these mean
Air Bags

The only recall information for the DAWN involves air bags. No owner complaints describe the exact failure, but air bag recalls can affect deployment. A buyer should confirm the recall was fixed.

What these mean
Power Train

Owners report grinding noises from the front during acceleration, and dealers sometimes say the transmission needs replacement. Some mention recalls for the same issue and parts being on backorder. This can mean costly repairs and long waits.

Engine

Complaints include sudden, uncontrollable acceleration that led to a crash, and engine codes for a coolant valve bypass. These are serious safety and repair concerns. A buyer should check for open recalls and have a mechanic scan for stored codes.

Service Brakes

Drivers describe pressing the brake pedal with no response, such as going down a steep hill. This is a critical safety issue. Any used Camry should have its brakes inspected and any brake-related recalls checked.

Electrical System

Electrical complaints are among the top categories, though sample texts focus on other areas. Electrical gremlins can cause warning lights, battery drain, or sensor failures. A pre-purchase electrical check is wise.

Buyer analysis

Rolls Royce DAWN or Toyota Camry: which should you buy?

The Rolls Royce DAWN has far fewer complaints per year (0 vs. about 214 for the Camry). But that is partly because so few DAWNs are on the road. In practice, the Camry has a well-documented pattern of power train, engine, and brake complaints, while the DAWN's main known issue is an air bag recall.

Recommendation. If you want the lowest reported complaint rate and can accept a niche luxury car, the DAWN may suit you—but verify the air bag recall was done. If you need a mainstream sedan with lots of repair data and easier parts access, the Camry is more practical, but inspect the transmission, brakes, and engine carefully.

Key differences

  • The DAWN has 0 complaints over 6 years; the Camry has 2,143 complaints over 10 years, including 181 crash-related and 163 injuries.
  • Camry owners report specific failures like transmission grinding, sudden acceleration, and brake pedal failure; the DAWN has no owner complaint text on file.
  • The DAWN's only recall subjects are air bags; the Camry has 31 recalls covering air bags, seats, wheels, and labels.
  • The Camry's top complaint areas are power train, engine, brakes, and electrical; the DAWN has no top component data.
Watch on Rolls Royce DAWN
  • Check for any open air bag recall by providing the VIN to a Rolls Royce dealer.
  • Since there are no owner complaints, ask for a full pre-purchase inspection focusing on air bag system health.
Watch on Toyota Camry
  • During a test drive, listen for grinding or whining from the transmission during acceleration.
  • Test the brakes on a slope or empty road for any delay or lack of response, and ask for a brake inspection.

Before you buy

  • For either car, run the VIN on NHTSA's recall lookup to see open recalls.
  • For the Camry, ask a mechanic to scan for engine codes, especially coolant valve bypass codes.
  • For the Camry, have the transmission fluid checked and listen for unusual noises on a test drive.
  • For the DAWN, confirm the air bag recall was completed and get a written report.
  • For both, request a complete pre-purchase inspection from an independent mechanic.
