The picture

Is the BMW 323I or Toyota Camry more reliable?

A plain-English read on what the NHTSA record says about living with each vehicle.

BMW 323I

The BMW 323I is a compact luxury sedan with a very high complaint rate for a single model year: 406 complaints over 1 year, or about 406 per year. The pattern is dominated by power train issues, especially transmissions that won't engage reverse, and by air bag recalls tied to Takata inflators. Structural complaints about rust and subframe weakness also appear, which can make these cars expensive to keep on the road.

Toyota Camry

The Toyota Camry is a mainstream midsize sedan with a much lower complaint rate per year: 2,056 complaints over 10 years, or about 206 per year. Owners report a wide mix of issues, including hesitation and shuddering, electronic parking brake failures, and multiple driver-assist system malfunctions. Recalls cover seats, air bag occupant sensors, and wheel studs, so checking recall history is important.

Owners report the transmission will not shift into reverse, sometimes rolling backward on an incline as if in neutral. One complaint notes this led to a fender bender, so a buyer should test reverse engagement carefully on a cold start.

Air Bags

Many complaints involve Takata air bag recalls where parts were unavailable, leaving drivers waiting for repairs. There is also a report of air bags deploying while the vehicle was in motion, which is a serious concern if the recall work was never completed.

Structure

Owners describe rust and weak spots in the subframe and rear shock mounting area, with one report of the shock punching through the metal frame. This can fail inspection and be costly to repair, so a thorough underbody check is essential.

Visibility

Complaints include power windows that fail to close and abnormal engine RPM increases. A window that won't close is a security and weather problem, and the RPM issue suggests other electronic gremlins may be present.

“TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2000 BMW 323I. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE TRANSMISSION WOULD NOT SHIFT INTO REVERSE. ON ONE OCCASION, THE FAILURE OCCURRED AND CAUSED A FENDER BENDER WITH ANOTHER VEHICLE. THERE WERE NO INJURIES AND A POLICE REPORT WAS NOT FILED. THE C…”

What these mean
Power Train

Owners report the ignition key gets stuck and cannot be removed even when the dash shows the car is in Park, sometimes requiring a battery disconnect. Others describe hesitation and shuddering with the check engine light on, which can point to transmission or engine management problems.

Engine

Complaints include a several-second delay in throttle response when pressing the accelerator, making the car feel unresponsive when pulling out. This can be a safety issue in traffic and may require dealer diagnosis.

Service Brakes

The electronic parking brake may not disengage, requiring a tow, and a new switch does not always fix it. Owners also report a clicking or vibrating sound from the brake pedal area that the manufacturer calls normal ABS operation, but it can be annoying and hard to diagnose.

Electrical System

Multiple driver-assist systems, including stability control, power steering, blind spot monitoring, and lane keeping, can malfunction at the same time. This can leave the car without key safety aids and may be difficult to trace.

In owners' words — POWER TRAIN

Buyer analysis

BMW 323I or Toyota Camry: which should you buy?

The Toyota Camry has far fewer complaints per year, about 206 versus about 406 for the BMW 323I. In practice, that means a Camry owner is less likely to face frequent repair visits, while the BMW 323I demands more attention and budget for transmission, air bag, and structural fixes.

Recommendation. If low ongoing repair risk and newer safety recalls matter most, choose the Toyota Camry. If you specifically want a BMW 323I, budget for a pre-purchase inspection that focuses on reverse gear, subframe rust, and proof that all air bag recalls were completed.

Key differences

  • The BMW 323I has about double the complaints per year (406 vs 206), with power train issues centered on reverse gear failure.
  • The Toyota Camry has more total recalls (31 vs 7) but spread over 10 years, covering seats, air bag sensors, and wheel studs.
  • BMW 323I complaints include structural rust and subframe weakness, while Camry complaints include electronic parking brake and driver-assist malfunctions.
  • The BMW 323I has 20 injuries and 0 deaths in the data; the Camry has 158 injuries and 1 death, but those totals cover 10 years versus 1 year.
Watch on BMW 323I
  • Test reverse gear from a cold start on a slight incline; if it slips or acts like neutral, the transmission may need expensive repairs.
  • Inspect the rear shock mounts and subframe for rust or cracks, especially if the car has lived in a salt-belt state.
Watch on Toyota Camry
  • Check that the ignition key releases freely when the car is in Park; a stuck key can require a battery disconnect to remove.
  • Test the electronic parking brake and listen for clicking or vibrating from the brake pedal area, which owners report as a common ABS noise.

Before you buy

  • Ask for proof that all open recalls, especially Takata air bag recalls on the BMW 323I, were completed.
  • On the BMW 323I, have a mechanic inspect the transmission reverse engagement and the rear subframe for rust.
  • On the Toyota Camry, test the electronic parking brake, key removal, and all driver-assist systems during a test drive.
  • Pull the NHTSA recall history by VIN for either car and confirm no unrepaired safety campaigns remain.
  • Budget for a pre-purchase inspection on both cars, since complaint patterns show issues that may not appear on a short test drive.

Check the actual car

Comparing models is smart. Checking the VIN is essential.

Brand averages tell you the trend. A VIN check tells you what's wrong with the specific BMW 323I or Toyota Camry in front of you — accident history, open recalls and title records.
