POWER TRAINJul 2025

Within the first two weeks after purchasing the vehicle, I noticed a transmission issue where the vehicle would not properly shift gears. I sometimes would try to up or downshift but there would be no change in the display on the gear indicator. Later there became an issue where the vehicle would put itself into neutral while I was in gear and driving, which would cause the vehicle to stop completely in traffic, putting myself and other drivers in the vicinity at risk. This became more and more frequent, and the vehicle even got to the point where it would not shift beyond 2nd gear and was essentially inoperable. After taking the vehicle to Toyota, it was explained to me that they would not be able to repair the vehicle as one of the faulty parts has been discontinued, and advised that I get my money back on the car. The Toyota mechanic further explained that even if the part was replaced, the vehicle may continue to experience the same issue. The dealership that I purchased the vehicle from was unwilling to refund me, but did hold my vehicle for repairs for over 2 months. The vehicle seemed to drive normally for about 1,000 miles after that, but then the same issue repeated. It started again with not shifting gears correctly; there was an instance I was driving on the highway and tried to shift from 5th to 6th but it would not allow me to. In another instance, I was again driving on the highway when the vehicle randomly put itself into 2nd gear and jolted forward, this was followed by a loud revving before the transmission gave out completely and the car would not move. After this, I had the vehicle towed to my residence, as this could have ended in tragedy had the surrounding drivers not been as vigilant. I’ve reported the issue again to the dealership, but they will not take this vehicle back. The car has remained parked outside my residence for well over a month, as it is unfit to be driven on the road.

TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2004 TOYOTA MR2 SPIDER. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE CHECK TRANSMISSION LIGHT ILLUMINATED ON THE INSTRUMENT PANEL. WHENEVER THIS OCCURRED, THE VEHICLE BECAME DIFFICULT OR IMPOSSIBLE TO SHIFT GEARS. AN AUTHORIZED DEALER INSPECTED THE VEHICLE AND STATED THAT THE CODES TO THE TRANSMISSION MODULE NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS UNKNOWN AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 32,000. UPDATED 04/10/12*LJ THE CONSUMER STATED OVER A YEAR AGO, THE VEHICLE STARTED STALLING AFTER ABOUT 50 MILES. THE EVENT BECAME MORE AND MORE FREQUENT, AFTER A SHORT 50 MILE DRIVE. WHEN HE STOPPED, THE MOTOR WOULD RE-START, BUT THE SEQUENTIAL TRANSMISSION WOULD NOT RESPOND UNTIL THE VEHICLE WAS TURNED OFF FOR ABOUT 30 SECONDS. ON ONE OCCASION, THE TRANSMISSION BECAME STUCK IN 2ND GEAR. UPDATED 04/13/12

Thanks for reading this - the Sequential Manual Transmission failed on the car - the warning light was on but it failed 3 times within 15 mins. Not sure if you are aware of this car and the transmission issues when the car was made new from 2003 to 2005. I have the parts to fix it but was there ever a recall on these types of cars?

RE; RECALL 14V273000, NEVER HAD A FAILURE,HAD ORIGINAL RECALL DONE YET SERVICE DEPT CUT OFF SPARE TIRE CARRIER CABLE AND RELOCATED SPARE TIRE TO INSIDE OF VEHICLE. WIFE IS HANDICAPPED AND WE CANNOT USE THE REAR OF THE VEHICLE TO TRANSPORT HER MOBILITY SCOOTER. I BELIEVE WAITING 7+ MONTHS FOR A FIX IS UNREASONABLE, ESPECIALLY SINCE SPARE TIRES HAVE BEEN LOCATED UNDER VEHICLES FOR DECADES.I WOULD HOPE TOYOTA COULD COME UP WITH A FIX INSTEAD OF SITTING AROUND AND DOING NOTHING ! *TR

TIRESJun 2024

Size 185/55/R15 82B. A set of tires was purchased May 2024 from Tire Rack. After driving less than 400 miles - the front drivers tire went flat while driving. Upon inspection of all four tires we noted all four are dated 2013. We were sold tires that are 11 years old and are therefore a danger.

The vehicle was taken to a local dealer, who confirmed that the parts were on back order. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The dealer provided a Lien letter. The manufacturer was contacted and opened a case. The contact had not experienced a failure.

TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2000 TOYOTA MR2. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE VEHICLE CONSUMED OIL AT AN ALARMING RATE. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED OR DIAGNOSED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS CONTACTED ABOUT THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE AND CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 122,000.

ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLINGMar 2012

SIMILAR TO THE HUNDREDS OF OTHER EARLY AFFECTED 1ZZ ENGINES (MR2, COROLLA, MATRIX, VIBE AND OTHERS) MY ENGINE IS CURRENTLY BURNING 1 QUART EVERY 400 MILES. MY MECHANIC HAS NOTED THAT IT IS DUE TO PISTON RINGS OR THE OFF SHAPED BORE IN EARLIER 1ZZ ENGINES. SO THE ENGINE IS BURNING OIL AND MY HEAD IS ALSO BEING STARVED FOR MUCH NEEDED OIL. I AM NOW JEOPARDIZING THE OXYGEN SENSORS AND CATALYTIC CONVERTER WHICH WERE JUST REPLACED. *TR

ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLINGNov 2006

IN JUNE OF 2006 I HEARD A TICKING NOISE IN THE ENGINE OF MY 2000 MR2 SPYDER. WHEN I BROUGHT T TO THE DEALERSHIP THEY TOLD MY I HAD SPUN A BEARING DUE TO OIL STARVATION, EVEN THOUGH I HAD MY OIL CHANGED EVERY 3000 MILES. THE DEALERSHIP REPLACED THE BEARINGS AND CRANK AND THE NOISE WAS GONE. 2 MONTHS LATER, AFTER DRIVING 4000 MILES AND HAVING THE OIL CHANGED AFTER 2500, THE TICKING NOISE RETURNED. THE DEALERSHIP AGAIN STATED THAT I HAD A SPUN BEARING DUE TO OIL STARVATION. WHEN INVESTIGATED FURTHER THE TECH SAID THAT THE SMALL BLOCK OF THE ENGINE ISN'T ALLOWING OIL TO REACH THE PISTONS. WHEN I SEARCHED ONLINE I FOUND THAT MULTIPLE OTHER MR2 SPYDER OWNERS HAVE EXPERIENCED THE SAME PROBLEMS. *JB

TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2002 TOYOTA MR2 SPYDER. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER FOR A CLUTCH REPLACEMENT WHEN HE WAS ADVISED THAT THE TRANSMISSION WOULD ALSO NEED REPLACING. BOTH WERE REPLACED HOWEVER, WHEN THE CONTACT DROVE THE VEHICLE OFF THE DEALER'S LOT, THE ENGINE SEIZED. THE ENGINE WAS REPLACED BY A DIFFERENT DEALER. THE VEHICLE BEGAN TO BECOME STUCK IN CERTAIN GEARS AND WOULD STALL SPORADICALLY. THE TRANSMISSION WARNING LIGHT WAS ILLUMINATED SINCE THE DATE THE TRANSMISSION WAS REPLACED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT FURTHER DIAGNOSED OR REPAIRED. THE CURRENT AND FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 47,000. UPDATED 01/31/11/ *BF THE ENGINE GASKETS AND CATALYTIC CONVERTER WERE REPLACED. UPDATED 04/20/11

TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2002 TOYOTA MR2. WHILE DRIVING AT 55MPH THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT ILLUMINATED. THE VEHICLE STARTED TO LOOSE POWER AND WOULD NOT ACCELERATE OVER 30MPH. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE GARAGE. THE DIAGNOSTIC TESTING LOCATED THE FAILURE AT THE CATALYTIC COVERTER, WHICH HAD BLOCKAGE CAUSING THE SENSORS TO FAIL. THE ESTIMATED COST TO REPLACE THE CATALYTIC CONVERTER AND SENSORS WAS $3,800.00. THE MANUFACTURER TOOK A REPORT 1004210579;AND STATED THE VEHICLE IS OUT OF WARRANTY THEREFORE THEY WILL NOT ASSIST WITH THE REPAIR. THE VEHICLE WILL BE REPAIRED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 118,000.

2002 TOYOTA MR2 SPYDER MID-DRIVING, SMT SLIPS OUT OF GEAR INTO NEUTRAL. ONLY WAY TO FIX IT IS TO DISCONNECT THE BATTERY & LET IT SIT OVERNIGHT, DISCONNECTED. THIS RESETS THE COMPUTER & THEREAFTER THE GEARS WORK AGAIN UNTIL IT HAPPENS AGAIN. I'VE SEEN AT LEAST 50 COMPLAINTS ONLINE ABOUT SAME PROBLEM, WHICH IS HOW I LEARNED HOW TO FIX IT. TOYOTA IGNORES COMPLAINTS. IT WILL HAPPEN WHILE DRIVING IT, ON THE ROAD. RECURS, NOT A ONE TIME INCIDENT. *TR

POWER TRAINFeb 2010

TOYOTA MR2 SPYDER SMT TRANSMISSION PROBLEMS. (5 SPEED - CLUTCHLESS SHIFTING SYSTEM) SMT TRANSMISSION WENT OUT ON MY MR2 SPYDER CAR. GOT IT FIXED (OR SO I THOUGHT)AT THE DEALERSHIP AFTER EXCESSIVE EXPENSE ($3,500) REPLACING TWO ASSEMBLIES WITHIN THE SYSTEM. AFTER THIS INITIAL FIRST TRIP TO THE DEALERSHIP AND SUPPOSEDLY REPAIR, I WAS ADVISED BY DEALERSHIP THAT THE CAR WAS THOROUGHLY TESTED, ALL CODES ERASED ON THE ON BOARD COMPUTER, AND CAR TRANSMISSION WAS FIXED AND WORKING PROPERLY. SO I DROVE IT HOME. DROVE AND SHIFTED FINE FOR ABOUT 1 1/2 WEEKS AND I THOUGHT IT WAS FIXED. THEN ONE NIGHT WHILE DRIVING, SURROUNDED BY TRAFFIC AND A FEW TRUCKS, THE TRANSMISSION SUDDENLY AND WITHOUT WARNING, BEGAN LURCHING - MIS SHIFTING WITH NEW SQUEALING NOISES COMING FROM THE BACK. I ALMOST LOST CONTROL OF THE CAR - NOT THE STEERING - THE MOMENTUM OF THE CAR VANISHED ALMOST IMMEDIATELY - WITH RANDOM SHIFTING OCCURRING WITHOUT EVEN TOUCHING THE STICK SHIFT. I WAS VERY, VERY LUCKY GETTING THE CAR OFF TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD WITHOUT GETTING HIT BY ANY OF THE TRAFFIC AROUND ME AT THAT TIME. THE CAR IS VERY SMALL AND COULD EASILY BE CRUSHED BY LARGER VEHICLES IN THAT REDUCED OPERATION CONDITION. IT WAS ALSO DARK. I ALSO WAS VERY LUCKY THAT I COULD "LIMP" IT HOME FROM THERE AFTER I TRIED TO SURMISE WHAT HAD HAPPENED TO IT. SO IT SQUEALED AND MISSHIFTED ALL THE AWAY HOME - I HAD TO STAY IN SECOND OR THIRD GEAR GOING SLOW ON SECONDARY ROADS WITH MY FLASHERS ON. AFTERWARDS - I HAVE REQUESTED HELP FROM TOYOTA THE CORPORATION AND DEALERSHIP FOR WHAT I FEEL IS A DEFECTIVE SMT SYSTEM. THIS SHOULD NEVER HAPPEN ESPECIALLY AFTER IT WAS SUPPOSED TO BE FIXED AFTER ALL OF THE DIAGNOSTICS/TESTING/ASSEMBLY REPLACEMENTS, ETC. THAT THEY PERFORMED! WHY WOULD TOYOTA ALLOW SOMEONE TO DRIVE AWAY WITH SUCH A POTENTIAL HAZARD LIKE THAT? RIDICULOUS AND DANGEROUS! I TOOK IT BACK TO DEALERSHIP, THEY SAID THEY DID MORE DIAGNOSTICS - RECOMMEND MORE REPLACEMENT OF VERY VERY EXPENSIVE PARTS - HELP!!!! *TR

SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC,EXTERIOR LIGHTINGNov 2007

I HAVE A 2002 TOYOTA SEQUOIA WITH 62,000 MI. I HAVE BEEN TO TWO TOYOTA DEALERS TO FIGURE OUT MY PROBLEM. THE VSC TRAC, VSC OFF, ABS AND BRAKE LIGHTS ARE COMING ON. FINALLY AFTER @$700 OF MY MONEY, THEY FIGURED OUT THE PROBLEM TO BE THE ECU. THIS WILL NOW COST ME @1800 FOR PARTS, AND WHO KNOWS YET FOR LABOR. I HAVE READ ONLINE THAT MANY OTHER TOYOTA OWNERS HAVE THE SAME PROBLEM. THIS IS AN EXPENSIVE SITUATION, UNLESS YOU HAVE THE EXT. WARRANTY. I FEEL THAT TOYOTA NEEDS TO DO SOMETHING ABOUT THIS, MAYBE RECALL THIS AND FIX THESE CARS BEFORE THERE IS AN ACCIDENT. I LIVE IN NEW YORK WHERE THERE IS ALOT OF SNOW. MY VSC WILL NOT WORK UNTIL I GET THIS FIXED. I HAVE TWO SMALL CHILDREN AND HAVE TO RELAY ON STANDARD BRAKES IN THE SNOW UNTIL THIS IS FIXED. TOYOTA SHOULD STAND BEHIND THEIR REPUTABLE NAME AND FIX THESE PROBLEMS ASAP..... *TR

STEERINGOct 2007

TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2002 TOYOTA PRIUS. EACH TIME THE VEHICLE IS DRIVING FORWARD OR IN REVERSE AT APPROXIMATELY 4 TO 10 MPH, IT SHAKES VIOLENTLY. THE FAILURE OCCURS INTERMITTENTLY AND USUALLY IN COLD WEATHER. THE VEHICLE SHAKES ROUGHLY AFTER IT HAS BEEN DRIVEN FOR A WHILE. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO A DEALER ON TWO OCCASIONS. SERVICE BULLETIN NUMBER 20040604 WAS REFERENCED. THE DEALER DISCOVERED THAT THE STEERING RACK AND STEERING COMPUTER FAILED AND NEEDED TO BE REPLACED AT THE COST OF $2,200. THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 50,000 AND FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 40,000.

VISIBILITYMay 2007

I PURCHASED A 2002 TOYOTA SEQUOIA IN NOVEMBER 2002. WHEN THE VEHICLE WAS PURCHASED THE SALES PERSON TOLD ME THAT THE HEATING/AIR CONDITIONER SYSTEM APPEARED TO BE A POORLY DESIGNED, BUT I DID NOT THINK THAT A BIG OBSTACLE TO MY PURCHASE. I HAD CONTINUAL PROBLEMS TRYING TO REGULATE THE TEMPERATURE IN THE VEHICLE. IT WAS EITHER 65 DEGREES AND THE NEXT LEVEL DOWN WAS COLD. I WAS ALWAYS FLIPPING THE KNOB BACK AND FORTH TRYING TO REGULATE THE TEMPERATURE. THIS WAS NOT A BIG SAFETY ISSUE UNLESS TAKING MY EYES OFF THE ROAD FOR THESE ADJUSTMENTS CAN BE CONSIDERED HAZARDOUS. BUT I LIVE IN A SOMEWHAT COLD CLIMATE AND I HAVE HAD TROUBLE KEEPING THE WINDOWS DEFROSTED ON SOME DAYS PARTICULARLY IF THE HUMIDITY WAS HIGH. THIS COULD BE CONSIDERED A SAFETY ISSUE. I JUST TOOK THE VEHICLE TO THE TOYOTA SERVICE DEPARTMENT BECAUSE AIR CONDITIONER LIGHT WAS BLINKING. LOOKING AT A REPAIR BILL OF AROUND $1,600.00 FOR A NEW COMPRESSOR AND CLUTCH. OF COURSE, I DO NOT HAVE AN EXTENDED WARRANTY AS THIS WAS MY SIXTH TOYOTA ,AND I HAVE NEVER HAD ANY PROBLEMS SUCH AS THIS IS THE PAST. SINCE I HAVE READ THAT OTHERS HAVE EXPERIENCED THE SAME PROBLEMS I WOULD URGE SOMEONE TO LOOK INTO THE ISSUE BEFORE SOMEONE GOT KILLED BECAUSE OF INABILITY TO SEE OUT THE FRONT WINDOW. *AK

Before you buy, check the exact Toyota MR2

These pages show model-year patterns across 8 years. Enter a VIN to verify the exact vehicle's accident history, title brands, odometer records, and open recall status before purchase.

The basics

How to read this data

Complaints, recalls, investigations — here’s what each number actually tells you about a used Toyota MR2, in plain English.

01

What is an NHTSA Complaint?

An NHTSA safety complaint is a report filed directly by a vehicle owner or driver describing a safety-related issue. Anyone can submit a complaint at NHTSA.gov. The number of complaints is a signal of how common a problem is — but complaints per model-year matter more than raw totals, since popular vehicles naturally receive more reports. The Toyota MR2 has 74 complaints on record across 8 model years.

02

What is a Safety Recall?

A safety recall is a mandatory campaign issued by NHTSA when a vehicle component poses an unreasonable risk to safety or does not comply with federal motor vehicle safety standards. Unlike complaints (which are owner-reported), recalls are formally investigated and confirmed by regulators. Manufacturers must fix recalled vehicles free of charge. The Toyota MR2 has 0 recall campaigns in the NHTSA database.

03

What Are Crash Complaints?

Crash complaints are NHTSA filings where the owner indicates a crash occurred as part of the incident. 9 of the Toyota MR2's 74 complaints involved a crash. This metric is particularly important because it indicates how often defects resulted in actual collisions — a key safety signal beyond general reliability.

04

How Is the Reliability Verdict Calculated?

The reliability verdict (Average) is generated by analyzing the vehicle's total complaints, recall history, crash complaint ratio, fire complaint ratio, and top component failures relative to class averages. This verdict gives buyers a quick interpretation before they review year-level details and VIN-level history. It should be treated as one decision input, not a substitute for a VIN-specific report.

05

Why Do Newer Years Have Fewer Complaints?

Newer model years appear to have fewer complaints because there has been less time for owners to file them. Complaints accumulate over years of ownership. A 2020 model year vehicle will typically show fewer complaints than a 2015 model year even if it is less reliable — simply because fewer owners have had time to report issues. Focus on complaints per year of market presence when comparing across model years.

06

Fleet Data vs. Individual VIN

Everything on this page reflects aggregated data across all Toyota MR2 vehicles on the road — not any specific car. Two Toyota MR2 vehicles of the same year can have very different histories: one may have been in three accidents and have an open recall; another may be clean. A VIN check gives you the individual car's history: accidents, title brands, odometer records, service history, and real-time recall status.

07

What Are NHTSA Investigations?

When NHTSA receives a pattern of related safety complaints, it opens a formal investigation. A Preliminary Evaluation (PE) is the first stage — NHTSA determines if a safety defect may exist. If evidence is strong, it escalates to an Engineering Analysis (EA), which can result in a mandatory recall. The Toyota MR2 has 0 investigations on record (0 active). Investigations listed above may have already led to the recalls shown on this page.
