NHTSA NCAP crash test ratings

New Car Assessment Program

NCAP crash tests measure how well a vehicle protects occupants in controlled frontal crash, side crash, and rollover scenarios. Stars are awarded per category (5 = safest). These laboratory results are independent of owner complaints and are performed by NHTSA engineers on new production vehicles.

NCAP crash test ratings for this model are not yet loaded or this vehicle was not tested in the years analyzed. NHTSA tests a subset of new vehicles each year. Check nhtsa.gov/ratings directly for the latest results.

EXTERIOR LIGHTINGJun 2026

This model of truck has 4 led lights that will never turn off. Using the switch in the cab does not affect them. When the headlight switch is in off, manual, or parking - these lights remain on. Additionally, there is no setting in the software that provides control over these lights. I have interacted with Stallantis Customer Service, and my local dealer -both state: "Lights are working as designed". Contrary to this, the owners manual states that the lights can be turned off using the switch. There are times, after dark, where parking lights are appropriate, but headlights are not. It seems to me a design flaw and dangerous to give the operator of the vehichle zero control over these "halo lights".

ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLINGFeb 2026

The contact owns a 2023 Ram Promaster 3500. The contact received notification of NHTSA Campaign Number: 25V720000 (Engine and Engine Cooling); however, the part to do the recall repair was unavailable. The contact stated that the manufacturer exceeded a reasonable amount of time for the recall repair. The dealer was contacted and confirmed that there was no fix available and suggested that the vehicle was no longer driven or parked too near the residence. The manufacturer was not made aware of the issue. The contact had not experienced a failure.

SUSPENSIONOct 2024

What component or system failed or malfunctioned, and is it available for inspection upon request? Vehicle was manufactured from the factory with defective frame/left upper coil spring mount causing the coil spring to move off it's locking perch making the coil spring unsecured to the vehicle frame. Yes, the vehicle available for inspection. How was your safety or the safety of others put at risk? The defective coil spring mount allows the unsecured coil spring to move during travel with the potential of becoming dislodged from the vehicle which would cause complete suspension failure and the potential of loss of control of vehicle. This is especially true when towing. Has the problem been reproduced or confirmed by a dealer or independent service center? - Yes, the issue has been confirmed by the dealership and area engineer of Ram/Stellantis. Has the vehicle or component been inspected by the manufacturer, police, insurance representatives or others? - Yes, this have been inspected and confirmed by the dealership, area rep and area engineer of Ram/Stellantis. (See attached work orders) Were there any warning lamps, messages or other symptoms of the problem prior to the failure, and when did they first appear? - There were no warning lamps or messages, the very first symptom was just a squeaky spring type noise when driven off the lot after purchasing. That squeak intermittently continued until the squeak became a clunk and a metal on metal type noise and the vehicle didn't feel like it had equal suspension from left to right side of the vehicle. The dealership and area engineer for Ram/Stellantis stated the vehicle has a defective frame/coil mount, vehicle should not be driven on the highway, the vehicle should be repurchased by automaker and parted out/destroyed. This case has been going on for seven months, Ram/Stellantis has been stalling and unwilling thus far to repurchase the vehicle and take ownership of the defective manufactured vehicle.

Despite having taken my 2023 Ram 3500 HD truck to the Ram dealer 3 times for the same recall, the issue still persists. The recall in question is B2A/NHTSA 23V-799 related to a malfunctioning SCCM that results in high beams activating with left turn signal activation. Also, left turn signal activates with high beam pass activation. Per Ram's protocol, they performed a software reboot upon the first attempt. The problem quickly returned. I returned to the same service department who did not perform any service on the vehicle despite the ongoing problem for more than one week. I took the truck back as it was my main mode of transportation. Because this safety issue has not resolved, I attempted to take it back to a different Ram service center who wanted to perform some incredibly involved electronic disconnection of all systems. I told them this was unacceptable because this was a known recall item that is still active. I have tried calling Ram Cares Customer service, but they have been entirely unhelpful. I am not filing this safety issue because Ram refuses to provide the needed replacement of the SCCM unit, which was the correct fix for this recall because they insist that the recall has been serviced appropriately. I have a recent video that shows the problem still happening, but they have not cared to look at it.

ENGINESep 2024

On my model year 2023 RAM 3500 equipped with the Cummins 6.7L High Output engine, the premature failure of the camshaft valve lifter has caused the engine camshaft to have abnormal wear due the valve lifter roller bearing seizing. This has also caused metallic debris to contaminate the engine oil causing further damage to other engine components. This potential safety hazard of this incident, potential catastrophic engine failure which may occur while driving and cause the vehicle to stop suddenly without driver input. According reports provided by multiple consumers and dealer service departments for this vehicle model, others have experienced the same failure. The vehicle has not been independently inspected. There were no warning lamps, the only recognizable symptom to the issue is an irregular ticking sound coming from the engine bay upon startup and at warm temperature idle.

PARKING BRAKEApr 2024

The contact owns a 2023 Ram 3500. The contact stated that while driving at unknown speeds, the parking brake engaged without driver input. The parking brake warning light was illuminated. The contact was unable to disengage the parking brake. The contact was aided by another driver. The vehicle was taken to the local dealer, who was unable to duplicate the failure. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure, but no assistance was provided. The failure mileage was unknown. The VIN was not available.

EXTERIOR LIGHTING,VISIBILITY/WIPERNov 2023

Turn on left blinker and the high beams come on doesn’t matter if it’s daytime, night time, headlights on or off, truck running not running. Obviously you don’t want to high beam other drivers when passing on left or turning left. Opened driver door and passenger rear window shattered with 2800 miles on it.

SEAT BELTSNov 2023

The seatbelts do not porperly retract. The get caught in door after use, they fit loose and don’t feel secure. I had a 2018 ram 2500 that did the same

STEERINGOct 2023

Driving vehicle and made a left turn and the power steering stopped working and the brakes went spongy. Made the turn and the power steering started working again. It did it five other times on the same drive, over a fifteen minute period of time. The engine belt is in place and there are no signs of wear. Vehicle has 10,550 miles on it. Dealer states it’s missing some type of clip from the factory.

TPMS is installed on the truck but is not available to view anywhere inside the truck. It is 1ton pickup meant for towing. We tow a 15000# camper Ram's official position (I have voicemails) is that monitoring tire pressure while towing is "not required" for safe towing I adamantly disagree and believe they are selling an unsafe product for it's intended use My dealer has gone as far as they can and I have gone as far as I can thru they're Customer "don't" Care The fact that is in installed but not viewable is complete irresponsible. They say I should look at their app while driving. On the app the information is buried several screens in and the text size is literally less than 1/16" tall Again Ram's official position is that monitoring tire pressure is "not required" during towing and if I want to I should use the app on my phone while driving Date in additional details is the date of the first voicemail I received. I also received a followup voicemail on 8/17/23

LATCHES/LOCKS/LINKAGESJul 2023

The contact owns a 2023 Ram 3500. The contact stated while driving 25 MPH, the tailgate opened independently. There was no warning light illuminated. The contact arrived at the residence and became aware that the tailgate was open. The dealer was contacted and stated that none of the vehicle with similar year, make, or model was equipped with a tailgate ajar indicator light. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was contacted and stated that the failure was a known failure; however, no assistance was provided. The failure mileage was 850.

FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE,EQUIPMENTJul 2023

The contact owns a 2023 Ram 3500. The contact stated that while inspecting the vehicle, the generator was turned on and the contact became aware of gasoline leaking. The contact related the failure to NHTSA Campaign Number: 23E030000 (Fuel System, Gasoline, Equipment). The vehicle was taken to the dealer, who informed the contact that the part to do the repair was not yet available. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 14,000.

CrashELECTRICAL SYSTEM,UNKNOWN OR OTHER,SERVICE BRAKESMay 2026

Hello, I am formally documenting a serious safety incident involving my recently purchased 2026 Dodge Ram 3500 Tradesman 6.7L dually, purchased from Towbin Dodge in [XXX] , on May 9, 2026. On May 13, 2026—only five days after purchase—we were operating the truck for our dumpster business while towing a GN trailer loaded with approximately 5 tons. We were traveling down Mount Charleston after a pickup when a critical brake failure occurred. While descending the mountain grade, the truck’s braking system failed to respond. A warning light appeared on the dashboard indicating an issue with the electric brake system. We had tow/haul mode and exhaust braking engaged, but neither system functioned properly. When my father pressed the brake pedal, the vehicle did not slow down. With a steep descent ahead and no effective braking response, my father was forced to steer the vehicle off the road into a ditch to avoid a direct impact with the mountain, which could have resulted in a fatal collision. After stopping, we noticed signs of extreme brake overheating, and the system appeared to be close to catching fire. I have video and other documentation of the incident. The vehicle is currently in the dealer’s possession. This is a major safety failure occurring within days of purchase, and I am requesting a full investigation into the brake system and all related components, including any recalls, defects, or electronic braking malfunctions. I do not want the truck anymore! Given the severity and risk to life involved, I am requesting immediate action and a full resolution regarding this vehicle. Vehicle sends cluster warnings about Auto Emergency Braking unavailable/inoperable, Electronic Stability Control needs service, Antilock Brake System needs service, Parksense Unavailable, and ultimately the Check Engine indicator illuminates after restarting the vehicle. An error code also is present in the computer, U1412. This has happened twice now in a two week period. These systems are critical to safe operation of he vehicle, especially in emergency braking conditions, and could affect both the operator and the general public if they indeed failed. The vehicle has not been inspected by the manufacturer, yet, and is scheduled for 5/8/2026

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,SERVICE BRAKESApr 2026

This is related to the 2025/2026 Ram 3500 U1412 code relating to anti lock brake system. On this date I got an ABS warning light and check engine light. The vehicle would not turn off, was not sure if it was in gear or not, and multiple other lights came on the dash. Vehicle towed to dealership. They said they could not reproduce the error and that all the codes disappeared due to the batteries dying overnight. They replaced both batteries and returned vehicle. Have since had same problem twice more with one requiring towing again. If this problem happens on roadway while being operated it would be very dangerous on roadway.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,SERVICE BRAKESApr 2026

Second incident relating to U1412 code where ABS related warning lights coming on. On 1/19/26 it had the same issue but was towed due to undriveable and would turn off. This time I drove straight to Dodge dealership where they got the codes, unlike last time due to batteries dead. Ram performed two flash updates and felt issue was fixed. Car is currently at dealership for third incident of same nature and had to be towed exactly same as first time on 1/19/26. Towed in on 4/16/2026. Three times when new truck less than 6 months old and 10k miles. Unsafe as mentioned on other report.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,SERVICE BRAKESApr 2026

Vehicle at dealership a third time for same issue relating to U1412 code associated with ABS system. First time it was towed on 1/19/2026 and second time I took it to the dealership before it required towing on 3/26/2026. This time the truck required towing again after not being able to go into gear or being able to turn it off. Multiple warning lights on the dash. Still waiting for diagnosis but service department knew this problem from other vehicles and said manufacturer isn’t sure of cause.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,EXTERIOR LIGHTINGMar 2026

The contact owns a 2026 Ram 3500. The contact received notification of NHTSA Campaign Number: 26V059000 (EXTERIOR LIGHTING, ELECTRICAL SYSTEM); however, the part to do the recall repair was unavailable. The contact stated that the manufacturer had exceeded a reasonable amount of time for the recall repair. The contact called a dealer while traveling in Braunfels, Texas, and asked about parts availability. The dealer stated that the manufacturer was providing only one part per week to the dealer location, which was causing a long wait for the recall repair. A second dealer, Miller Motor Sales Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram (1196 Milwaukee Ave, Burlington, WI 53105) was contacted and confirmed the limited part supply to the dealer. The manufacturer was not made aware of the issue. The contact had not experienced a failure.

Before you buy, check the exact RAM 3500

These pages show model-year patterns across 10 years. Enter a VIN to verify the exact vehicle's accident history, title brands, odometer records, and open recall status before purchase.

The basics

Understanding this data

What is an NHTSA Complaint?

An NHTSA safety complaint is a report filed directly by a vehicle owner or driver describing a safety-related issue. Anyone can submit a complaint at NHTSA.gov. The number of complaints is a signal of how common a problem is — but complaints per model-year matter more than raw totals, since popular vehicles naturally receive more reports. The RAM 3500 has 1,660 complaints on record across 10 model years.

What is a Safety Recall?

A safety recall is a mandatory campaign issued by NHTSA when a vehicle component poses an unreasonable risk to safety or does not comply with federal motor vehicle safety standards. Unlike complaints (which are owner-reported), recalls are formally investigated and confirmed by regulators. Manufacturers must fix recalled vehicles free of charge. The RAM 3500 has 86 recall campaigns in the NHTSA database.

What Are Crash Complaints?

Crash complaints are NHTSA filings where the owner indicates a crash occurred as part of the incident. 46 of the RAM 3500's 1,660 complaints involved a crash. This metric is particularly important because it indicates how often defects resulted in actual collisions — a key safety signal beyond general reliability.

How Is the Reliability Verdict Calculated?

The reliability verdict (Poor) is generated by analyzing the vehicle's total complaints, recall history, crash complaint ratio, fire complaint ratio, and top component failures relative to class averages. This verdict gives buyers a quick interpretation before they review year-level details and VIN-level history. It should be treated as one decision input, not a substitute for a VIN-specific report.

Why Do Newer Years Have Fewer Complaints?

Newer model years appear to have fewer complaints because there has been less time for owners to file them. Complaints accumulate over years of ownership. A 2020 model year vehicle will typically show fewer complaints than a 2015 model year even if it is less reliable — simply because fewer owners have had time to report issues. Focus on complaints per year of market presence when comparing across model years.

Fleet Data vs. Individual VIN

Everything on this page reflects aggregated data across all RAM 3500 vehicles on the road — not any specific car. Two RAM 3500 vehicles of the same year can have very different histories: one may have been in three accidents and have an open recall; another may be clean. A VIN check gives you the individual car's history: accidents, title brands, odometer records, service history, and real-time recall status.

What Are NHTSA Investigations?

When NHTSA receives a pattern of related safety complaints, it opens a formal investigation. A Preliminary Evaluation (PE) is the first stage — NHTSA determines if a safety defect may exist. If evidence is strong, it escalates to an Engineering Analysis (EA), which can result in a mandatory recall. The RAM 3500 has 0 investigations on record (0 active). Investigations listed above may have already led to the recalls shown on this page.
