Is the SAAB 9 4X or Chevrolet Silverado more reliable?
A plain-English read on what the NHTSA record says about living with each vehicle.
SAAB 9 4X
The Saab 9-4X is a rare, discontinued crossover, so ownership is defined by scarce parts and limited dealer support. Over two years, NHTSA logged just 5 complaints, but the pattern is troubling: owners report that General Motors won't make replacement windshields, making a cracked windshield a registration problem. There are also four recalls, all for rear suspension, and one owner said the recall part wasn't available. With so few vehicles on the road, even small failures can become big hassles.
Chevrolet Silverado
The Chevrolet Silverado is a high-volume truck with a huge complaint record: 8,227 complaints over 10 years, including 233 crash-related reports, 160 injuries, and 3 deaths. The most common trouble spots are the engine, powertrain, electrical system, and brakes. Owners describe serious symptoms like engines shutting off while driving, sudden loss of braking, and transmissions going into neutral. With 101 recalls, it's clear this truck has had many safety-related fixes over its life.

Owners complain that General Motors refuses to manufacture replacement windshields, which can leave a cracked 9-4X unable to pass a safety inspection. Another owner simply couldn't find recall information for the car on NHTSA's website. For a buyer, this means even a minor windshield chip could sideline the vehicle.
The same windshield shortage shows up here: a cracked windshield can't be replaced, making the car illegal to register in some states. This is a direct ownership risk because the part is not being made.
All four recalls are for the rear suspension, and one owner reported getting a recall notice but being told the repair part wasn't available. That means a known safety defect may go unfixed for months, leaving the rear suspension compromised.
An owner reported an intermittent airbag sensor warning: if the front passenger seat is empty, the back seat side-rail airbag may not inflate. The fix is a software upgrade, but it's another sign of electronic gremlins in a low-volume vehicle.
“General Motors refuses to manufacture replacement windshields rendering all 9-4x vehicles that get a cracked windshield unsafe and unable to pass a safety inspection for registration.”

Owners of newer Silverados report engines shutting off while driving, sometimes with a 'Return to Neutral' message, and diesel models suffering repeated excessive soot events that require dealer service. These are not minor annoyances—they can leave you stranded or cause a crash.
Complaints include a truck suddenly going into neutral while driving slowly uphill in a parking garage, and another where the engine shut off and screens went blank. A transmission that drops into neutral without warning is a serious safety concern.
Owners describe a sudden, severe loss of normal braking with a firm pedal but little stopping power, as well as engines shutting off while driving. Electrical faults that affect brakes or engine operation are among the most dangerous problems reported.
The same braking-loss complaint appears here: the truck would not stop normally at a stop sign. Another owner reported the truck completely shut off in a parking lot and wouldn't accelerate. Brake and stall issues like these demand immediate attention.
“I purchased the 2026 Chevrolet Silverado with a 6.2L motor "new" from the dealer with 5700 miles on XXX. Roughly a month and 2500 miles later, my family and I were in the vehicle, 750 miles from home, returning from a vacation to [XXX] from the [XXX]/[XXX] ar…”

Buyer analysis
SAAB 9 4X or Chevrolet Silverado: which should you buy?
The Saab 9-4X has far fewer issues per year (2.5 complaints/year vs. 822.7 for the Silverado), but that's partly because so few were sold. In practice, the Silverado's much higher complaint and recall volume means you're more likely to encounter a serious safety defect, while the Saab's rarity means parts like windshields can be impossible to find.
Key differences
- The Saab 9-4X has only 5 complaints and 4 recalls, all for rear suspension, while the Silverado has 8,227 complaints and 101 recalls across many systems.
- Saab owners report a windshield shortage that can make the car unregisterable; Silverado owners report engines shutting off and brakes failing while driving.
- The Silverado's complaint record includes 233 crash-related reports, 160 injuries, and 3 deaths; the Saab's record shows 0 in each of those categories.
- Saab's main issue is parts availability (windshield, recall parts), while the Silverado's main issues are active safety failures (engine, transmission, brakes, electrical).
- Check the windshield for any cracks or chips—replacement windshields are reportedly not being manufactured, so a damaged one could fail inspection.
- Confirm that the rear suspension recall (NHTSA Campaign 21V473000) was completed; owners report parts may not have been available, so the defect could still be present.
- Test drive at low speeds and in parking lots, watching for sudden neutral engagement or engine shutdown, which owners report.
- Check for any history of brake problems or electrical glitches, especially complaints of a firm pedal with poor stopping power or screens going blank.
Before you buy
- For the Saab 9-4X, verify the windshield is intact and ask if a replacement is available before buying.
- For either vehicle, run the VIN on NHTSA.gov to see all open recalls and confirm they were repaired.
- On the Silverado, ask for service records related to engine stalls, transmission neutral events, and brake repairs.
- On the Saab, ask for proof that the rear suspension recall was completed, since parts may have been unavailable.
- Take a long test drive that includes highway, stop-and-go, and parking-lot maneuvers to feel for stalling, braking loss, or transmission issues.
