One owner reported that the factory carbon fiber wheels on a 2025 model cracked after parking during a trip. Carbon fiber wheels are lightweight but can be fragile, and a crack could lead to sudden loss of air or wheel failure, which is dangerous on a motorcycle.
“The contact owns a 2025 BMW M 1000 XR. The contact stated that after parking the motorcycle during a trip, the contact became aware that the factory carbon fiber wheels were cracked. The selling dealer and the local dealer were contacted. The motorcycle was t…”

Owners frequently report transmission problems, including going into limp mode, getting stuck in 5th gear, and lead frame failures that can cause sudden loss of power. One owner said a lead frame issue 'nearly ended my life,' highlighting the safety risk.
Many complaints involve the lead frame and output speed sensor failures, which can trigger limp mode and error codes like P0722. These electrical faults can leave the truck undrivable or cause unexpected behavior on the road.
A owner reported that the rear window defroster shorted and caused the back window to explode outward, shattering glass. This is a surprising and potentially dangerous defect that could injure occupants or cause a crash if it happens while driving.
With 1,224 complaints, exterior lighting issues are common, though specific failure details are not provided in the sample. Lighting problems can reduce visibility and increase crash risk, especially at night.
“This lead frame issue is never ending. Well over a decade without a proper remedy. I’m very familiar with it. but this one nearly ended my life. After the near collision I called my mechanic and bought a new ford lead frame from a dealership. It’s doing fine…”

BMW M 1000 XR or FORD F 150: which should you buy?
The BMW M 1000 XR has far fewer issues per year—0.3 complaints annually versus 1,162.1 for the Ford F-150. In practice, this means the BMW owner is much less likely to experience frequent problems, but the Ford's high volume reflects a much larger number of vehicles on the road and a wider range of reported defects.
Key differences
- The BMW M 1000 XR has only 1 complaint and 2 recalls, while the Ford F-150 has 11,621 complaints and 151 recalls—a massive difference in reported problem frequency.
- The BMW's sole complaint is about cracked carbon fiber wheels, a structural safety concern; the Ford's top complaints involve power train and electrical failures that can cause limp mode or loss of power.
- The Ford F-150 has 330 crash-related complaints, 297 injuries, and 1 death, whereas the BMW has none of these reported, though the low volume makes direct comparison difficult.
- The Ford's recalls cover engine, seat belts, door latches, and air bags, indicating a broad range of safety issues; the BMW's recalls are both for steering, a critical system but narrower in scope.
- Inspect the carbon fiber wheels for any cracks, chips, or delamination, especially around the spokes and rim edges, as one owner reported cracking after normal use.
- Check for any steering-related recall work—confirm with a BMW dealer that both steering recalls have been performed and ask for documentation.
- Test drive the truck extensively and watch for transmission shudder, delayed engagement, or sudden limp mode; ask if the lead frame or output speed sensor has been replaced.
- Inspect the rear window and defroster for signs of overheating or damage, and check for any recall related to the rear window or electrical system.
Before you buy
- Obtain a full vehicle history report and check for open recalls on the NHTSA website using the VIN.
- For the BMW, have a motorcycle specialist inspect the carbon fiber wheels and steering components.
- For the Ford, have a mechanic scan for transmission error codes and test the electrical system, including the rear defroster.
- Ask the seller for maintenance records, especially any transmission or electrical repairs on the Ford.
- Take a long test drive that includes highway speeds and stop-and-go traffic to replicate conditions that trigger limp mode or other issues.
