The picture
Is the BMW M 1000 R or FORD F 150 more reliable?
A plain-English read on what the NHTSA record says about living with each vehicle.
BMW M 1000 R
The BMW M 1000 R is a high-performance motorcycle with no owner complaints filed over three years, so there is no reported pattern of real-world failures to learn from. It has two recalls, both for steering, which means BMW identified a potential steering defect and issued a fix. With zero crash, injury, or death reports tied to it, the data suggests a very low reported problem rate, but the absence of complaints also means buyers have little owner feedback to rely on.
FORD F 150
The Ford F-150 is a full-size pickup with a huge owner base and a very high complaint volume: over 11,600 complaints in ten years, averaging more than 1,100 per year. The most common trouble spots are the power train, electrical system, exterior lighting, and engine, and owners describe serious issues like transmissions stuck in limp mode and a rear window that shattered. There are also 330 crash-related reports, 297 injuries, and one death, so some reported failures have had severe consequences.

Owners report transmissions that go into limp mode and get stuck in 5th gear, often daily, and a recurring 'lead frame' issue that one owner said nearly ended their life. These failures can leave you without full power or gear selection when you need it.
The same lead frame problem also shows up as an electrical complaint, and one owner described a rear window defroster short that caused the back window to explode outward. Electrical faults can disable safety systems or cause sudden damage.
This category includes the rear window shattering after the defroster was turned off, which owners say happened without any impact. A window that breaks on its own is a serious safety and cost concern.
Exterior lighting is one of the top complaint areas, though the sample text does not describe a specific failure. Lighting problems can make the truck less visible or fail inspections, so check all lights carefully.
“This lead frame issue is never ending. Well over a decade without a proper remedy. I’m very familiar with it. but this one nearly ended my life. After the near collision I called my mechanic and bought a new ford lead frame from a dealership. It’s doing fine…”
