The picture

Is the BMW 540I or Honda Accord more reliable?

A plain-English read on what the NHTSA record says about living with each vehicle.

BMW 540I

The BMW 540I is a luxury sedan with a relatively low complaint rate of about 2.5 per year over the past decade. Owners report issues with brakes, electrical components, and air bag sensors, often leading to expensive repairs. Recalls are frequent, with 18 over 10 years, covering air bags, engine, and drivetrain. While no injuries or deaths are reported in the data, the complaints suggest that when problems occur, they can be costly and safety-related.

Honda Accord

The Honda Accord is a mainstream sedan with a much higher complaint rate of about 452 per year, reflecting its huge popularity. Complaints span engine, electrical, forward collision avoidance, and fuel system issues, with 162 crash-related reports, 146 injuries, and 3 deaths. Recalls are also numerous at 38 over 10 years, covering hybrid software, tires, seat belts, air bags, and fuel pumps. The volume of complaints means many owners experience problems, some serious.

Service Brakes

Owners report brake issues that can trigger a stop-sale recall, and one complaint describes the vehicle jerking at 55 mph when accelerating, which could be related to brake or drivetrain problems. These symptoms may indicate underlying safety defects that need prompt attention.

Electrical System

Complaints include airbag warning lights due to passenger seat occupancy sensor failures, instrument cluster blackouts, and melted headlight connectors. These electrical faults can be expensive to fix and may affect safety systems like airbags and lighting.

Air Bags

Owners report persistent passenger seatbelt chimes and airbag malfunctions, often traced to a faulty seat mat sensor. This can lead to the airbag not deploying in a crash, posing a serious safety risk if not repaired.

Seats

The passenger seat occupancy sensor is a common failure point, causing intermittent warnings and potential airbag deactivation. Owners face repeated repairs, sometimes out of warranty, which can be costly and frustrating.

In owners' words — SERVICE BRAKES

“I reserved this vehicle with a deposit on Oct. 26. At the time I was told the vehicle was under recall/stop sale for a brake issue and I would not be able to take delivery until the recall work was performed. On 11/5, I was able to purchase the vehicle after…”

Engine

Owners describe sudden loss of power, alarms for brake and stability systems, and rattling noises during acceleration, especially in hybrid models. These issues can leave drivers stranded or cause unsafe driving conditions.

Electrical System

Complaints include simultaneous failure of power steering and braking at highway speeds, as well as tire pressure monitoring system warnings that may precede tire failure. Such electrical glitches can compromise critical safety functions.

Forward Collision Avoidance

Owners report unexpected activation or failure of collision avoidance systems, sometimes under clear driving conditions, leading to near-misses or crashes. This undermines a key safety feature that many buyers rely on.

Fuel/Propulsion System

Issues include fuel pump failures and hybrid system problems that can cause stalling or loss of power. These defects may result in breakdowns and potential fire risks, as indicated by recalls.

Buyer analysis

BMW 540I or Honda Accord: which should you buy?

The BMW 540I has far fewer complaints per year (2.5 vs. 452.4) and no reported injuries or deaths, while the Honda Accord has 146 injuries and 3 deaths in the data. In practice, this means the BMW may have fewer overall problems, but when issues arise they can be expensive; the Honda's higher volume of complaints suggests more frequent owner-reported defects, some with severe outcomes.

Recommendation. If you prioritize a lower frequency of reported problems and can afford potential luxury repair costs, the BMW 540I may be the better choice. If you need a mainstream vehicle with widely available parts and service, but are willing to accept a higher likelihood of complaints, the Honda Accord could work—just be diligent about recalls and inspections.

Key differences

  • Complaint volume: BMW 540I averages 2.5 complaints per year; Honda Accord averages 452.4 per year, indicating far more owner-reported issues for the Accord.
  • Safety outcomes: BMW 540I has 0 injuries and 0 deaths in the data; Honda Accord has 146 injuries and 3 deaths, with 162 crash-related complaints.
  • Common failure areas: BMW 540I complaints center on brakes, electrical, and air bag sensors; Honda Accord complaints frequently involve engine, electrical, and forward collision avoidance systems.
  • Recall counts: BMW 540I has 18 recalls; Honda Accord has 38 recalls, covering a broader range of systems including hybrid software and fuel pumps.
Watch on BMW 540I
  • Check for persistent passenger seatbelt chimes or airbag warning lights, which often indicate a faulty seat occupancy sensor that can prevent airbag deployment.
  • Inspect brake system for recall completion and test drive for jerking or hesitation during acceleration, as reported by owners.
Watch on Honda Accord
  • Test drive at highway speeds and listen for rattling noises or feel for rough transitions between EV and gas modes, especially in hybrid models.
  • Verify that forward collision avoidance and adaptive cruise control function correctly, and check for any history of sudden braking or steering failures.

Before you buy

  • Obtain a full vehicle history report and confirm all recalls have been performed, especially for air bags, brakes, and electrical systems.
  • Have a pre-purchase inspection by a qualified mechanic familiar with the model, focusing on the specific complaint areas noted.
  • Test drive under various conditions (highway, stop-and-go) to replicate potential symptoms like jerking, rattling, or warning lights.
  • Check for extended warranty coverage or service bulletins that may address known issues, particularly for the BMW's seat sensor and the Honda's hybrid system.
  • Review NHTSA complaints for the specific model year to see if patterns persist and factor that into your negotiation.
