Owners report brake-related issues such as a vehicle being under a recall stop-sale for a brake problem, and one complaint describes jerking during acceleration that may relate to brake or drivetrain behavior. These can affect stopping confidence and may require dealer service.
Complaints include airbag warning lights due to passenger seat occupancy detection failure, instrument cluster blackouts, and melted headlight wiring. These faults can disable safety systems and lead to costly repairs.
Owners report repeated passenger seat sensor malfunctions that trigger airbag warnings and may prevent the airbag from deploying. The problem often recurs even after seat mat replacement, and may not be covered outside warranty.
The passenger seat can trigger persistent seatbelt chimes and intermittent warnings, with dealer confirmation that the airbag might not deploy. This is a known, not-covered fault that can be annoying and safety-relevant.
“I reserved this vehicle with a deposit on Oct. 26. At the time I was told the vehicle was under recall/stop sale for a brake issue and I would not be able to take delivery until the recall work was performed. On 11/5, I was able to purchase the vehicle after…”

Owners report engine problems such as a 6.2L motor failing shortly after purchase, and diesel particulate filter soot accumulation events requiring dealer service. These can cause breakdowns and expensive repairs, especially on newer trucks.
Complaints include a vehicle suddenly shifting into neutral and losing power while driving slowly, and a 6.2L motor issue that may be related to the power train. This can leave a driver stranded or unable to accelerate.
Owners describe sudden loss of normal braking with a firm pedal, and the engine shutting off while driving with messages like 'Return to Neutral' and 'Press Start'. These electrical faults can be dangerous and unpredictable.
Complaints include severe loss of braking effectiveness and the truck shutting off completely with blank screens while in a parking lot. Brake problems in a heavy truck are a serious safety concern.

Buyer analysis
BMW 540I or Chevrolet Silverado: which should you buy?
The BMW 540I has far fewer issues per year (2.5 complaints/year) compared to the Chevrolet Silverado (822.7 complaints/year). In practice, the BMW owner is much less likely to file a complaint, but the Silverado's much higher volume and severity of issues—including crashes, injuries, and deaths—mean a buyer should weigh the risk of major engine, power train, and brake failures.
Key differences
- Complaint volume: BMW 540I averages 2.5 complaints per year; Chevrolet Silverado averages 822.7 per year, a massive difference in reported problems.
- Safety outcomes: Silverado has 233 crash-related complaints, 160 injuries, and 3 deaths; BMW 540I has 1 crash-related complaint and no injuries or deaths.
- Common failure areas: BMW 540I issues center on brakes, electrical, airbags, and seats; Silverado issues center on engine, power train, electrical, and brakes.
- Recall counts: BMW 540I has 18 recalls; Silverado has 101 recalls, suggesting more frequent safety-related fixes.
- Check for persistent passenger seatbelt chimes or airbag warning lights, as owners report repeated seat occupancy sensor failures that may not be covered.
- Inspect headlight housings and daytime running lights for melted connections or malfunction warnings, a reported electrical issue.
- Look for engine stalling or messages like 'Return to Neutral' and 'Press Start' during a test drive, as owners report sudden shutdowns.
- Test the brakes carefully for firm pedal but reduced stopping power, and check for any history of brake-related recalls or repairs.
Before you buy
- Obtain a full vehicle history report and confirm all recalls have been performed, especially for brakes and airbags on the BMW and engine/power train on the Silverado.
- Have a pre-purchase inspection by a trusted mechanic who specializes in the brand, focusing on the specific complaint areas listed.
- During a test drive, pay attention to any warning lights, unusual noises, delayed acceleration, or braking issues.
- Ask the seller for maintenance records, especially for electrical and sensor repairs on the BMW and engine/diesel particulate filter services on the Silverado.
- Verify warranty coverage or set aside a repair budget, as many reported issues occur outside warranty and can be costly.
