DASH BOARD LITE SAYS "AI R BAG PROBLEM" EVERY TIME YOU START THE ENGINE
I HAVE A FUEL LINE ON MY CAR THAT IS CRACKED AND I HAVE MY CHECK ENGINE LIGHT ON. I HAVE SEARCHED FOR THE FUEL LINE ONLINE AND AT O'REILLY BUT THAT PART DOESN'T EXIST ANYWHERE. I HAVE CALLED OLDSMOBILE AND THE PHONE RECORDING SAYS THAT MY CAR HAD 3 OPEN RECALLS. WHEN I TALK TO A PERSON THEY TOLD ME NO THOSE RECALLS WERE CLOSED ON MY CAR. BUT FOR ONE SPECIFIC RECALL IT DESCRIBES MY EXACT PROBLEM WITH THE NON EXISTENT PART THAT IS CRACKED ON MY CAR. THAT PART ALSO HAS A DATE FOR BEFORE THE RECALL WAS ANNOUNCED. I'VE TALKED TO THE GM DEALER NEAR WHERE I LIVE AND THEY ARE TELLING ME THE SAME THING THAT THOSE RECALLS ARE CLOSED. NOW CLOSED AND REPAIRED HAVE 2 DIFFERENT DEFINITIONS I THOUGHT. THE FUEL LINE IS A MAJOR SAFETY ISSUE. ESPECIALLY WHEN I'M A SINGLE MOM THAT DRIVES MY KIDS AROUND. WHAT IF SOMETHING WERE TO HAPPEN AND THAT CRACK IN MY FUEL LINE STARTING LEAKING FUEL ON MY ENGINE. BUT BECAUSE OLDSMOBILE AND GM SAY ITS BEEN CLOSED AND THEY CAN'T HELP ME THAT I'M SUPPOSE TO WAIT UNTIL MY CAR BLOWS UP ONE OF THESE DAYS WITH ME AND MY KIDS IN THE CAR AND WE ALL DIE? I AM SO UNBELIEVABLY DISAPPOINTED WITH THIS ISSUE THAT I WILL STOP AT NOTHING TO NOT SEE THIS RECALL REPAIR ON MY CAR. ITS OBVIOUS A SAFETY CONCERN. AS WELL AS THE OTHER RECALLS THAT HAVE BEEN CLOSED AND NOT REPAIRS. ONE FOR AN AIRBAG AND ANOTHER FOR THE PCM REPROGRAMMED AT IGNITION COIL.

THE FAILURE ALSO OCCURRED WHEN THE CRUISE CONTROL WAS ENGAGED. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN INDEPENDENT REPAIR SHOP WHERE THE THROTTLE BODY CONTROL WAS REPLACED. THE FAILURE CONTINUED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 110,000.
TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2003 OLDSMOBILE AURORA. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE ENGINE WAS MISFIRING AND HE SMELLED A BURNING ODOR COMING FROM THE VEHICLE. WHEN HE STARTS THE VEHICLE, THE ENGINE MAKES A LOUD NOISE. THE DEALER STATED THAT THE IGNITION COIL FAILED AND NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE CONTACT WAS INFORMED THAT THE DEALER WOULD CALL GM TO CHECK IF THE VEHICLE CAN BE REPAIRED FOR FREE UNDER WARRANTY. GM STATED THAT THERE WAS NO WARRANTY ON THE VEHICLE, BUT THE CONTACT COULD PAY FOR THE REPAIRS WITH A 10% DISCOUNT. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 69,000.

ON OCTOBER 1, 2004 I RETRIEVED MY 1 YEAR OLD DAUGHTER FROM HER CAR SEAT. I WAS HOLDING HER AND PUSHED THE INSIDE DOOR BUTTON TO CLOSE THE PASSENGER SIDE DOOR. STANDING OUTSIDE OF THE VEHICLE I THEN LEANED IN THE FRONT SEAT TO RETRIEVE A BAG. SHE MUST HAVE REACHED BACK WHILE STILL IN MY ARMS AND THE AUTOMATIC SLIDING DOOR CLOSED, LATCHED AND LOCKED BREAKING HER ARM. I HAD TO USE THE KEY REMOTE TO OPEN THE DOOR. I HAVE FILED THIS COMPLAINT BEFORE AND LEFT NUMEROUS MESSAGES WITH A [XXX] THE PERSON TO WHOM TO DIRECT QUESTIONS TO AS STATED IN THE ACKNOWLEDGEMENT LETTER. I HAVE NOT YET RECEIVED A PHONE CALL BACK NOR HAVE I RECEIVED ANY OTHER LETTERS. SINCE THEN GENERAL MOTORS HAS ISSUED A RECALL REGARDING THE SLIDING DOORS. I HAVE MADE MANY PHONE CALLS ASKING ONLY TO RECEIVE A NEW VEHICLE. I DO NOT FEEL SAFE DRIVING THIS VEHICLE KNOWING MY 3 YOUNG CHILDREN COULD POTENTIALLY GET HURT AGAIN. I CAN NOT IN GOOD FAITH SELL THIS VEHICLE KNOWING ANOTHER YOUNG PERSON COULD GET HURT. PLEASE, ACKNOWLEDGE THIS E-MAIL. WHILE DRIVING AT 55 MPH CONSUMER APPLIED THE BRAKES AND BRAKE PEDAL WENT TO THE FLOOR. CONSUMER WAS UNABLE TO MAINTAIN CONTROL OF THE VEHICLE, AND IT CRASHED INTO A TOWED HITCHED TRAILER. MY 2002 AURORA V6, RPM STARTED ACTING HAYWIRE IT SHOT UP TO 8 GRAND AT 30 MPH. THE ENGINE AND TRANSMISSION WERE ACTING NORMAL. IT HAPPENED AGAIN 2 DAYS LATTER THEN ALL OF MY DASH LIGHTS AND HEADLIGHTS WENT OUT. I TOOK IT IN TO THE SHOP. I HAD THE TRANS VACUUM SENSOR CHANGED ALONG WITH THE HEADLIGHTS. THIS DID THE TRICK FOR 24 HOURS. NOT I HAVE THE SAME PROBLEM AND THE DEALER CAN NOT FIGURE OUT WHAT IS WRONG OR HOW TO FIX IT. CAN SOMEONE HELP WITH THIS. *TR
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2002 OLDSMOBILE AURORA. THE CONTACT STATED THAT FUEL SPILLED OUT FROM THE FILLER NECK WHILE REFUELING. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT TAKEN TO THE DEALER. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED AND STATED THAT THE VIN FAILED TO QUALIFY FOR THE RECALL UNDER NHTSA CAMPAIGN ID NUMBER: 03V238000 (FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE:STORAGE:TANK ASSEMBLY). BROKEN/SNAPPED SWAY BAR LINK, LEFT SIDE FRONT. CAR SWERVED TO THE LEFT, NO ACCIDENT UPON SNAP. UPON INVESTIGATION/REPLACEMENT THE BOLT WAS RUSTED THROUGH AT MID POINT AND SNAPPED. I SAVED THE BROKEN PART, IF IT IS NEEDED. *TR
MY 2002 AURORA 4.0L SUDDENLY LOCKED IN THE LEFT TURN STEERING MODE. I WAS IN A PARKING LOT AND WAS MAKING A TURN ON THE AISLE. AFTER THE TURN I TRIED TO STRAIGHTEN THE WHEELS AND THE STEERING WHEEL WAS LOCKED. THE ENGINE WAS RUNNING. I APPLIED THE BRAKES AND AVOIDED HITTING THE ONCOMING CAR (THE OTHER DRIVER DID THE SAME). I WAS ABLE TO MOVE INTO A PARKING SPOT AND CONFIRMED THE POWER STEERING BELT WAS TURNING THE POWER STEERING PUMP AND THE PUMP RESERVOIR WAS FULL. BY WORKING THE STEERING WHEEL BACK AND FORTH THE STEERING RESUMED TO THE RIGHT, BUT NOT TO THE LEFT. THIS IS SCARY. IT HAPPENED THE SAME WAY ON MY WIFE'S 2008 ENCLAVE. GM REPLACED LOTS OF PARTS BEFORE IT STARTED STEERING AGAIN. IS THIS A GM ISSUE? *TR
I HAVE A 2002 OLDS AURORA THAT TODAY HAS WATER STANDING IN THE BACK PASSENGER FLOORBOARD FOR THE TENTH OR TWELFTH TIME. THIS HAS HAPPENED SO MUCH THAT I HAVE LOST TRACK OF HOW MANY TIMES I HAVE HAD TO TAKE MY CAR TO THE DEALER TO HAVE IT FIXED. WHEN IT RAINS WATER LEAKS IN FROM THE FRONT PASSENGER WIDOW SEAL ON THE RIGHT SIDE OF THE WINDOW ABOUT HALFWAY DOWN AND THEN RUNS DOWN TO THE MOLDING AT DOOR OPENING AT THE FLOORBOARD. FROM THERE IT THEN RUNS DIAGONALLY BACK TOWARD THE BACK PASSENGER FLOORBOARD ALONG THE MOLDING AND POOLS UP. LIKE THIS MORNING, THERE HAS BEEN MANY TIMES THAT TWO INCHES OF WATER IS PRESENT. I AM CONCERNED ABOUT MILDEW OR ADDITIONAL PROBLEMS THAT MAY BE PRESENT OR MAY SHOW UP AS A RESULT OF THIS CONTINUAL PROBLEM. THE DEALER DOESN'T SEEM TO HAVE A CLUE ON HOW TO FIX THIS, ORIGINALLY THEY KEPT REPLACING THE DOOR SEAL ON THE BACK DOOR. NOW FOR SOME TIME THEY HAVE REPLACED THE SEAL ON THE FRONT DOOR OR FRONT WINDOW. BUT THE LEAK CONTINUES. I UNDERSTAND THAT THERE IS A TSB ON THIS ISSUE. THE DEALER TELLS ME TODAY THAT THERE HAVE BEEN SEVERAL ISSUES LIKE MINE IN OTHER AURORA MODELS. I DON'T UNDERSTAND WHY THEY DO NOT KNOW HOW TO CORRECT THE PROBLEM. *TR
THE VEHICLE WOULD NOT START PROPERLY. SO I TOOK MY AURORA IN TO HAVE IT SERVICED AND FOUND OUT IT WAS THE FUEL TANK PRESSURE SENSOR, WHICH THEN I WAS TOLD THIS DEFECTIVE PART COULD HAVE CAUSED A FIRE. THIS SOUNDS LIKE A VERY UNSAFE PART AND I LOOKED THE PART UP AND FOUND OUT THAT IT HAD BEEN RECALLED AT ONE POINT, JUST NOT ON THE MY MAKE OF VEHICLE. SOMETHING NEEDS TO BE DONE ABOUT THIS BEFORE SOMEONE GETS KILLED. *TR
I NOTICE WHEN I AM DRIVING THAT THE HEAD LIGHTS WILL FLICKER EVERY ONCE IN AWHILE. I ALSO HAD THE DASH LIGHTS GO OUT ON ME IN THE MIDDLE OF THE NIGHT, THIS WOULD BE THE SECOND TIME THIS PART HAD BEEN FIXED. A FEW MONTHS LATER THE HEATING COMPONENT WENT OUT. I HAVE HAD NOTHING BUT TROUBLE WITH THIS VEHICLE SINCE I BOUGHT IT. THIS VEHICLE NEEDS TO BE RECALLED OR STATED UNDER THE LEMON LAW. *TR

The basics
How to read this data
Complaints, recalls, investigations — here’s what each number actually tells you about a used Oldsmobile Aurora, in plain English.
What is an NHTSA Complaint?
An NHTSA safety complaint is a report filed directly by a vehicle owner or driver describing a safety-related issue. Anyone can submit a complaint at NHTSA.gov. The number of complaints is a signal of how common a problem is — but complaints per model-year matter more than raw totals, since popular vehicles naturally receive more reports. The Oldsmobile Aurora has 170 complaints on record across 3 model years.
What is a Safety Recall?
A safety recall is a mandatory campaign issued by NHTSA when a vehicle component poses an unreasonable risk to safety or does not comply with federal motor vehicle safety standards. Unlike complaints (which are owner-reported), recalls are formally investigated and confirmed by regulators. Manufacturers must fix recalled vehicles free of charge. The Oldsmobile Aurora has 5 recall campaigns in the NHTSA database.
What Are Crash Complaints?
Crash complaints are NHTSA filings where the owner indicates a crash occurred as part of the incident. 10 of the Oldsmobile Aurora's 170 complaints involved a crash. This metric is particularly important because it indicates how often defects resulted in actual collisions — a key safety signal beyond general reliability.
How Is the Reliability Verdict Calculated?
The reliability verdict (Poor) is generated by analyzing the vehicle's total complaints, recall history, crash complaint ratio, fire complaint ratio, and top component failures relative to class averages. This verdict gives buyers a quick interpretation before they review year-level details and VIN-level history. It should be treated as one decision input, not a substitute for a VIN-specific report.
Why Do Newer Years Have Fewer Complaints?
Newer model years appear to have fewer complaints because there has been less time for owners to file them. Complaints accumulate over years of ownership. A 2020 model year vehicle will typically show fewer complaints than a 2015 model year even if it is less reliable — simply because fewer owners have had time to report issues. Focus on complaints per year of market presence when comparing across model years.
Fleet Data vs. Individual VIN
Everything on this page reflects aggregated data across all Oldsmobile Aurora vehicles on the road — not any specific car. Two Oldsmobile Aurora vehicles of the same year can have very different histories: one may have been in three accidents and have an open recall; another may be clean. A VIN check gives you the individual car's history: accidents, title brands, odometer records, service history, and real-time recall status.
What Are NHTSA Investigations?
When NHTSA receives a pattern of related safety complaints, it opens a formal investigation. A Preliminary Evaluation (PE) is the first stage — NHTSA determines if a safety defect may exist. If evidence is strong, it escalates to an Engineering Analysis (EA), which can result in a mandatory recall. The Oldsmobile Aurora has 0 investigations on record (0 active). Investigations listed above may have already led to the recalls shown on this page.
