My 2016 Genesis coupe will spontaneously, randomly accelerate, full throttle. I can't stop it until I throw it into neutral. There doesn't seem to be any common factor for it to happen. More often it was on the start up but sometimes as I was driving in traffic. The incidents are usually far apart. I have nearly wrecked too many times, so I parked it for good until I find the solution. I won't sell it and cause another person to possibly wreck or injure others. The local Hyundai dealership kept it for two months and test drove it but the problem didn't reoccur. They said nothing showed on the diagnostic (that past history on the diagnostic may have been erased) and they found no incident reports on this. So now I don't have transportation as my old truck is in the shop with transmission issues. Prob from over use. I can't afford to buy a new car until I can sell this one. Anyone know anything? The different occurrence is thorough out 2023 until parked approx April 2024

ON 7/20/20 AT 6:48 PM I WAS IN A MAJOR ACCIDENT. TAKING OUT 60 FEET OF FENCE AND ROLLING MULTIPLE TIMES. THANKFULL TO BE ALIVE; HOWEVER, THE AIRBAGS NEVER DEPLOYED. AND MY VIN SHOWED NO RECALLS
2300 STARTED MY CAR TO GO GET LUNCH (AT WORK). I FIRST NOTICED THAT MY LIGHTS WERE NOT ON (THEY ARE SET TO AUTOMATIC) SO I TURNED IT BACK ONE AND THEY TURNED ON; HOWEVER, THE HEADLIGHTS WOULD NOT. ALSO NO SOUND WHEN USING SIGNALS. LASTLY, THE SEAT BELT CHIME WOULD ALARM EVERY 15 SEC OR SO, THE WARNING LIGHT ON DASH STAYED ON. AFTER SHUTTING OFF THE CAR (WENT IN STORE) AND RESTARTED IT ALL SEEMS TO BE GOOD? *TR
THE A PILLAR HINGE HAS BROKEN ALL OF THE WELLS IN THIS AREA. IT MAKE A LOT OF NOISE WHEN GOING ON BUMPS. THE WELLS HAVE BROKE ON BOTH SIDES OF THE CAR. THE CAR HAS NEVER BEEN IN A ACCIDENT AND OCCURRED OVER A FEW WEEKS OF DRIVING.
AFTER REFUELING, STARTED VEHICLE AND NOTICED THAT AUTO-ON HEADLIGHTS DID NOT WORK AS I HAD TO TURN THEM TO THE MANUAL "ON" SETTING. NEXT, MY DOORS WOULD NOT LOCK AND THE DASH LIGHTS BECAME EXTREMELY BRIGHT. NEXT, MY SEAT BELT CONTINUOUSLY "CHIMED" WHILE I WAS DRIVING WITH IT ON. I ALSO NOTICED THAT MY TURN SIGNALS, WHEN ACTIVATED, DID NOT MAKE A SOUND. I DROVE LIKE THIS FOR ABOUT (30) MINUTES IN THE EVENING.
MANUAL TRANSMISSION GRINDS WHEN SHIFTING, SOMETIMES THE GEAR DOESN'T WANT TO GO IN AND YOU HAVE TO FORCE IT.. CAR HAS HAD THIS ISSUE SINCE THE FIRST WEEK I PURCHASED IT. CAR HAS 15,000 MILES.
Brakes went completely out while driving, absolutely terrifying. Pedal went straight to the floor and wouldn't stop. I had to manually downshift until it was under 5 mph and then it would barely stop.

Vehicle was diagnosed by repair shop n referred to take to dealer ... the problems was confirmed by independent service center
The brakes on my 2010 Genesis Coupe suddenly stopped working while on the freeway, luckily I was able to swerve into the carpool lane and avoid an accident. Upon taking it to Tuttle Click Hyundai I was told a master technician had to review it, which would cost $200 just to look at it. When the technician looked at the car, I was told it needed a new Brake Booster. Hyundai apparently no longer makes this part so the dealership had to locate an aftermarket replacement which costs about $1,100. I did note to the dealership that there was recalls on other 2010 Genesis cars for similar issues, but was told the recall was for the sedans, not the coupe and that they/Hyundai would not cover it. Upon installing the brake booster and bleeding the brakes, it was found that I also need a new ABS Module, which will cost up to $4,000 to find and install. Another user posted this same issue to the NHTSA in October 2022.
The 2.0T engine failed and the vehicle is currently at Hyundai service department waiting on my warranty company to do an inspection of the engine. My safety was at risk as the engine failed during normal operation of the vehicle on a busy city street near a blind curve which other vehicles travel at high rates of speed. Hyundai Service department has confirmed the engine has failed which it needs to be replaced/rebuilt. Hyundai Service department has inspected the vehicle. Waiting on inspection from warranty company. There were no warning lights or symptoms prior to the engine failure. Thankfully I was not operating the vehicle on the expressway as I normally do on my way home which could have put me in a much more dangerous scenario when the engine failed. When the engine failed it started to effect other components in the vehicle, as I started to completely lose the ability to maneuver the vehicle putting myself in a dangerous situation.
While driving, throttle stuck wide open. It was like I was flooring the gas pedal. I managed to pull over and stop vehicle. I restarted and was able to drive home.
On September 22, 2022 while traveling at about 65 mph on state highway 57 in CA, I came upon a sudden group of cars hitting their brakes and had to slam on my brakes but my 2010 Genesis Coupe did not stop and I had to swerve into an entrance lane on my right to avoid a serious collision. Fortunately there were no cars entering the highway on that entrance. I was then able to drive a short distance home. On May 26, 2022 I had my car serviced including the brakes by Service Auto Care and my car gave me no brake problems until this incident. On September 23 I brought my Genesis Coupe to Service Auto and explained what happened. The brakes worked fine on the way to the shop. They tested the brakes and said that the ABS module was defective but it was just put under a 15 year extended warranty by Hyundai on May 19, 2022 and to take it to the closest dealer. The dealer, Russell Westbrook Hyundai of Anaheim told me only the sedan was covered. This dangerous defect could occur at any time and cause a severe accident. I hope this report is helpful to the NHTSA and the defective part is replaced without charge. The dealership charged me $205 for an estimate, then wanted $2200 to re-do the brakes and then approximately $4000 to replace the ABS module. I have documents to back up everything I have presented.

While attempting to brake on exit ramp off an interstate highway, the brake pedal was depressed almost to the floorboard with minimal slowing. The brakes were pumped several times with slowing vehicle speed. Fortunately, the exit ramp was long enough to allow a safe stop. Pedal remains soft and spongy. No warning lights are on. Brakes functioned normally until this incident at 138,200 miles. However, master cylinder was replaced at 102,000 miles for a similar problem at an independent auto shop. π Understanding This Data
What is an NHTSA Complaint?
An NHTSA safety complaint is a report filed directly by a vehicle owner or driver describing a safety-related issue. Anyone can submit a complaint at NHTSA.gov. The number of complaints is a signal of how common a problem is β but complaints per model-year matter more than raw totals, since popular vehicles naturally receive more reports. The Hyundai Genesis Coupe has 163 complaints on record across 7 model years.
What is a Safety Recall?
A safety recall is a mandatory campaign issued by NHTSA when a vehicle component poses an unreasonable risk to safety or does not comply with federal motor vehicle safety standards. Unlike complaints (which are owner-reported), recalls are formally investigated and confirmed by regulators. Manufacturers must fix recalled vehicles free of charge. The Hyundai Genesis Coupe has 22 recall campaigns in the NHTSA database.
What Are Crash Complaints?
Crash complaints are NHTSA filings where the owner indicates a crash occurred as part of the incident. 15 of the Hyundai Genesis Coupe's 163 complaints involved a crash. This metric is particularly important because it indicates how often defects resulted in actual collisions β a key safety signal beyond general reliability.
How Is the AI Rating Calculated?
The AI reliability rating (Below Average) is generated by analyzing the vehicle's total complaints, recall history, crash complaint ratio, fire complaint ratio, and top component failures relative to class averages. The rating provides a plain-English summary for buyers who want a quick verdict without parsing raw numbers. It is one input in your buying decision β always verify with a VIN-specific report.
Why Do Newer Years Have Fewer Complaints?
Newer model years appear to have fewer complaints because there has been less time for owners to file them. Complaints accumulate over years of ownership. A 2020 model year vehicle will typically show fewer complaints than a 2015 model year even if it is less reliable β simply because fewer owners have had time to report issues. Focus on complaints per year of market presence when comparing across model years.
Fleet Data vs. Individual VIN
Everything on this page reflects aggregated data across all Hyundai Genesis Coupe vehicles on the road β not any specific car. Two Hyundai Genesis Coupe vehicles of the same year can have very different histories: one may have been in three accidents and have an open recall; another may be clean. A VIN check gives you the individual car's history: accidents, title brands, odometer records, service history, and real-time recall status.
What Are NHTSA Investigations?
When NHTSA receives a pattern of related safety complaints, it opens a formal investigation. A Preliminary Evaluation (PE) is the first stage β NHTSA determines if a safety defect may exist. If evidence is strong, it escalates to an Engineering Analysis (EA), which can result in a mandatory recall. The Hyundai Genesis Coupe has 0 investigations on record (0 active). Investigations listed above may have already led to the recalls shown on this page.
