ENGINEApr 2026

My vehicle doesnโ€™t even have 66k miles on it and the lifters have gone bad. The check engine came on and the vehicle has stopped working.

ENGINEMar 2026

Engine Failure According to Chevrolet dealership my engine needed to be replace due to tapping coming from the engine. In addition, they found lifter damage along with the camshaft. Cylinder 3 lifter roller failure causing noise and camshaft damage, Yes this was confirmed and engine replaced at that same dealership No warning light or any other symptoms prior to the problem. I have a copy of the receipt and the complete work order from the dealership.

ENGINEMar 2026

Engine has been making a knocking sound and shaking and vibrating very loud loudly. The engine light has been on as well as the traction light and it is acts like itโ€™s going to stall every time I turn on the engine. Because of safety concerns, especially on the very busy highway, where I do a lot of driving, I have been afraid to drive the car. Sewell Cadillac is aware of the engine problem and they informed me I need a $10,000 engine replacement! My 2020 engine falls outside of the current recall by one year. I feel as if GMC should be responsible for this unbelievable and totally unexpected problem! I have several friends who are experiencing the same issues with their GMC with the same year and comparable mileage.

ENGINEMar 2026

The contact owns a 2020 Cadillac Escalade. The contact stated that while starting and driving at an undisclosed speed, the engine made abnormal sounds. No warning light was illuminated. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired by an independent mechanic or dealer. The contact related the failure to NHTSA Campaign Number: 25V274000 (Engine and Engine Cooling); however, the year and VIN were not included in the recall. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 55,571.

Scary, driving with my 3 kids. Engine lights and hazard lights saying pull over. Loud sound coming from the hood. We immediately pulled over. Dealership and private Mechanic told us we need a new engine. We just spent $15k on a new transmission. Dealership wonโ€™t help us, said our 2020 wasnโ€™t part of the recall. We canโ€™t find an engine if our life depended on it. Itโ€™s the same engine as the recall yet they havenโ€™t recalled the 2020 engine yet. The dealership didnโ€™t even tell us what to do or where to complain besides their dealership. No help. Our Cadillac now sits un drive-able. We have to try to get a loan and buy another vehicle. So upset. GMC is not admitting ANYTHING with the 2020โ€™s

ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLINGMay 2025

The contact owns a 2020 Cadillac Escalade. The contact stated while driving 50 MPH, there was an abnormal knocking sound coming from the engine compartment, before the vehicle lost motive power. The contact was able to pull over to the shoulder of the roadway, where the vehicle failed to restart. The vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic, who diagnosed a failure with the lifters, resulting in damages to the engine. The contact was informed that the engine needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. After investigating the failure, the contact related the failure to NHTSA Campaign Number: 25V274000 (Engine and Engine Cooling), but the VIN was not included. The manufacturer was notified of the failure, a case was opened, and the contact was referred to the NHTSA Hotline for assistance. The failure mileage was 106,000.

ENGINEMar 2025

Engine has 64k miles and at stop lights and while parked drops idle to below 500 makes a random knock like sound shudders like it is going to cut off or have engine failure but no check engine lights.

FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCEJan 2024

Vehicle stops unexpectedly in parking lots (5-10mph) and on freeways (70-76mph). Speed ranges from 5 - 75 mph. Unexpected braking occurs for no reason. There are typically no obstructions or vehicles in front of the vehicle. It is most concerning when the vehicle automatically applies braking traveling at 70-76mph.

CrashEXTERIOR LIGHTINGDec 2021

Cadillac Escalade was struck in a rear end collision in Georgia. Driver of trailing car stated that the Escalade "suddenly stopped". After reviewing dash cam footage from the trailing car it can be seen that the Escalade was very slowly decelerating for ~4 seconds before suddenly stopping, the trailing driver did not react to the initial deceleration, only the sudden stop. Closer inspection of the footage suggests the non-standard brake lights of the Escalade contributed to the crash. The vertical stripes do not register as brake lights easily, especially as they blend into the structure of the vehicle. Screenshots of dashcam footage showing this are attached.

ENGINEJul 2026

While driving my 2026 Cadillac Escalade with approximately 15,000 miles, I experienced a sudden loss of engine power. I was able to safely move the vehicle onto the shoulder of the road. The vehicle would not continue operating and required towing. The dealership diagnosed the vehicle with a catastrophic internal engine failure requiring complete engine replacement. The engine is the 6.2L V8. There were no prior indications that the engine was about to fail.

Complete engine failure at 7000 miles.

DRIVING ON HIGHWAY AND KNOCKING/BUMPING NOISE CAME FROM ENGINE AREA AND SMOKING BADLY. ALMOST IMEDAITALLY LOSING POWER. OIL SPRAY FROM ENGINE COVERED RUNNING BOARDS AND BACK OF VEHICLE. NOT SURE OF EXACT COMPONENTS COULD ASLO BE MORE POWERTRAIN COMPONENTS AND NOT JUST ENGINE. WE CAN MAKE SURE VEHICLE IS AVAILABLE FOR YOUR INSPECTION IF NEEDED. THE DEALER CONFIRMED "CATASTROPHIC ENGINE FAILURE" . WE HAVE NOT BEEN GIVEN DETAILS ON EXACT CAUSE OR COMPONENTS. SAFETY OF DRIVER AND THREE PASENGERS WERE PUT AT RISK AS THE ISSUE HAPPENED ON A HIGHWAY WITH LOTS OF TRAFFIC RISKING CAUSING AN ACCIDENT. SAT ON THE SIDE OF THE ROAD FOR TWO HOURS WAITING ON TOW TRUCK FROM THE DEALERSHIP. THE CAR IS CURRENTLY AT DELAERSHIP AS THEY HAVE NOT YET TOLD US THE EXACT ISSUE BUT IT IS AN ENGINE/POWERTRAIN FAILURE IS ALL THEY HAVE SAID. VEHICLE IS CURRENTLY AT AUTHORIZED CADILAC DEALERSHIP IN LAMESA, TX. THERE WERE NO WARNING LIGHTS OR SOUNDS BEFORE THE ENGINE NOISE AND LOSS OF POWER. THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT DID NOT COME ON UNTIL ENGINE POWER HAD BEEN LOSSED AND SITTING ON THE SIDE OF THE ROAD. THE ENGINE WARNING LIGHT DID NOT COME ON FOR A FEW MINUTES AFTER LOSING ENGINE POWER.

ENGINEMay 2026

Complete engine failure. Car stalled out at highway speeds and nearly caused collision. Would not turn over to be moved off freeway.

POWER TRAIN,UNKNOWN OR OTHER,ENGINEApr 2026

The engine failed my check engine light came on, it was in the middle of traffic on 4/2/2026. the vehicle had a very rough idle it went away and then came back and then rough idle again I had 2 miles to go to reach my home and then it just shut off. I called the dealer immediately and then I call AAA I received a loaner from the dealer, and they said they would set up a meeting with the tech advisor and myself. My 2026 Cadillac escalate only had 3186 miles on it I was told by the dealership that it was a bearing issue.

ENGINEMar 2026

Driving on freeway, engine starting knocking loudly and completely failed. I blew an engine on my 2023 escalade esv as well. Seems like the recall might need to be extended to the 2026 models as well.

The basics

How to read this data

Complaints, recalls, investigations โ€” hereโ€™s what each number actually tells you about a used Cadillac Escalade, in plain English.

01

What is an NHTSA Complaint?

An NHTSA safety complaint is a report filed directly by a vehicle owner or driver describing a safety-related issue. Anyone can submit a complaint at NHTSA.gov. The number of complaints is a signal of how common a problem is โ€” but complaints per model-year matter more than raw totals, since popular vehicles naturally receive more reports. The Cadillac Escalade has 482 complaints on record across 10 model years.

02

What is a Safety Recall?

A safety recall is a mandatory campaign issued by NHTSA when a vehicle component poses an unreasonable risk to safety or does not comply with federal motor vehicle safety standards. Unlike complaints (which are owner-reported), recalls are formally investigated and confirmed by regulators. Manufacturers must fix recalled vehicles free of charge. The Cadillac Escalade has 29 recall campaigns in the NHTSA database.

03

What Are Crash Complaints?

Crash complaints are NHTSA filings where the owner indicates a crash occurred as part of the incident. 18 of the Cadillac Escalade's 482 complaints involved a crash. This metric is particularly important because it indicates how often defects resulted in actual collisions โ€” a key safety signal beyond general reliability.

04

How Is the Reliability Verdict Calculated?

The reliability verdict (Poor) is generated by analyzing the vehicle's total complaints, recall history, crash complaint ratio, fire complaint ratio, and top component failures relative to class averages. This verdict gives buyers a quick interpretation before they review year-level details and VIN-level history. It should be treated as one decision input, not a substitute for a VIN-specific report.

05

Why Do Newer Years Have Fewer Complaints?

Newer model years appear to have fewer complaints because there has been less time for owners to file them. Complaints accumulate over years of ownership. A 2020 model year vehicle will typically show fewer complaints than a 2015 model year even if it is less reliable โ€” simply because fewer owners have had time to report issues. Focus on complaints per year of market presence when comparing across model years.

06

Fleet Data vs. Individual VIN

Everything on this page reflects aggregated data across all Cadillac Escalade vehicles on the road โ€” not any specific car. Two Cadillac Escalade vehicles of the same year can have very different histories: one may have been in three accidents and have an open recall; another may be clean. A VIN check gives you the individual car's history: accidents, title brands, odometer records, service history, and real-time recall status.

07

What Are NHTSA Investigations?

When NHTSA receives a pattern of related safety complaints, it opens a formal investigation. A Preliminary Evaluation (PE) is the first stage โ€” NHTSA determines if a safety defect may exist. If evidence is strong, it escalates to an Engineering Analysis (EA), which can result in a mandatory recall. The Cadillac Escalade has 0 investigations on record (0 active). Investigations listed above may have already led to the recalls shown on this page.
