Owners report sudden oil loss without visible leaks, leading to engine failure or severe damage. Complaints also mention check engine lights, loss of power, and difficulty accelerating. This is critical because engine replacement is costly and can leave you stranded.

Electrical System

Reports include excessive oil consumption tied to electrical warnings, and issues like stalling or difficulty starting after refueling. These problems can affect daily reliability and may be intermittent, making diagnosis tricky.

Steering

With 720 complaints, owners describe steering problems that could affect control. While specific symptoms aren't detailed in the sample, the high count suggests a pattern worth investigating during a test drive.

Service Brakes

455 complaints involve brake issues. Although sample texts focus on other areas, the volume indicates potential problems with braking performance or durability, which is a major safety concern.

Buyer analysis

KIA Optima or KIA Sportage: which should you buy?

The KIA Sportage has far fewer complaints per year (about 125) compared to the KIA Optima (about 609), indicating fewer reported issues overall. In practice, this means a used Sportage may have a lower likelihood of frequent repair visits, but both models share serious engine concerns. Buyers should prioritize a thorough inspection regardless of choice.

Recommendation. If you need a sedan and can diligently monitor oil levels and maintenance, the Optima might suit you, but be prepared for potential engine issues. If you prefer an SUV and want fewer overall complaints, the Sportage is the better bet, though still check for oil consumption and electrical problems. Always get a pre-purchase inspection by a trusted mechanic.

Key differences

  • The Optima has nearly 5 times more complaints per year than the Sportage, with engine issues being the most common for both.
  • The Optima has 9 reported deaths and 191 injuries in its complaint data, while the Sportage has 0 deaths and 73 injuries.
  • The Sportage has fewer recalls (25 vs. 41) and lower crash-related complaints (84 vs. 214).
  • Both suffer from excessive oil consumption, but Optima owners also frequently report steering and brake problems, while Sportage owners report electrical failures and brake locking.
Watch on KIA Optima
  • Check the oil level and look for signs of sludge or low oil during inspection; many owners report sudden oil loss without leaks.
  • Test drive and listen for engine knocking or hesitation, and ask for maintenance records to see if oil changes were regular.
Watch on KIA Sportage
  • Inspect for excessive oil consumption by checking oil level and asking about oil top-off frequency; some owners add quarts between changes.
  • Test all electrical components, including lights, signals, and starting after refueling, as complaints mention stalling and inoperable systems.

Before you buy

  • Obtain a vehicle history report and check for open recalls, especially engine and brake campaigns.
  • Have a mechanic perform a compression test and inspect for oil leaks or consumption issues.
  • During a test drive, pay attention to transmission shifting, brake response, and any warning lights.
  • Ask the seller for all maintenance records, focusing on oil change intervals and engine repairs.
  • Verify that any recall repairs have been completed, and confirm with a Kia dealership if needed.
