Owners report engine backfires, overheating, and even seizure, as well as water leaks into the footwell after rain. These can lead to costly engine damage and interior mold, so check for coolant leaks and water intrusion.
Complaints include sudden loss of power while driving and unintended lunging when parking. Such failures can leave you stranded or cause low-speed collisions, so test transmission engagement and parking behavior.
Drivers describe brake warning lights, stalling, and firm steering, plus cruise control that fails to disengage after impact. These symptoms suggest brake and electronic issues that could compromise stopping ability.
Overheating and cooling system failures are reported, sometimes with no warning light. This can warp heads or destroy the engine, so verify cooling fan operation and check for coolant residue.

Owners report snapped front lower control arms and non-working horns, which can cause loss of steering control. A broken control arm is a severe safety risk, so inspect suspension components for cracks or rust.
Complaints include engine cooling fan failure that blows fuses and leads to overheating and head gasket damage. This can result in a complete engine replacement, so test the cooling fan and check for blown fuses.
Transmission cooling line leaks and loud knocking noises are reported, often without warning lights. Fluid loss can destroy the transmission, so check for leaks and listen for unusual sounds during a test drive.
Some owners experienced sudden engine failure, smoke, and fire from the high-voltage battery in plug-in hybrids. This is a serious fire risk, so have the battery system inspected by a qualified technician.
“I’ve learned a while ago that the vehicle doesn’t have a working horn, I’ve replaced the fuse at least five times and it’s still not working. Yes the car was sold to me this way. Also I’ve been getting this warning to my ford app: “The Blind Spot Information…”

FORD EDGE or FORD Fusion: which should you buy?
The Ford Edge has far fewer complaints per year (about 524 vs. 1,367 for the Fusion) and fewer recalls. In practice, this means the Edge is likely to spend less time in the shop, but both models have serious reported issues that require a thorough pre-purchase inspection.
Key differences
- The Fusion has nearly three times as many complaints per year as the Edge, with steering problems being the most common.
- Edge owners frequently report engine overheating and power train lunging, while Fusion owners report snapped control arms and transmission fluid leaks.
- The Fusion has 7 deaths and 313 injuries in crash-related reports, compared to 0 deaths and 127 injuries for the Edge.
- Both have recalls for back-over prevention software, but the Fusion also has recalls for battery management and engine block heaters.
- Check for coolant leaks, overheating signs, and water accumulation in the front footwell, which can indicate engine or body seal issues.
- Test the transmission for sudden power loss or lunging when shifting into park or reverse, as these are common owner complaints.
- Inspect the front lower control arms for cracks or rust, as snapped arms have been reported during turns.
- Verify the engine cooling fan operates and check for blown fuses, since fan failure can lead to overheating and head gasket damage.
Before you buy
- Obtain a full vehicle history report and confirm all recalls have been performed.
- Have a trusted mechanic inspect the engine, transmission, and brakes for the specific issues reported for each model.
- For the Edge, check for water leaks in the footwell and test the cooling system.
- For the Fusion, inspect the steering and suspension components and test the cooling fan.
- During a test drive, listen for unusual noises and feel for any hesitation, lunging, or warning lights.
